• Installing Ubuntu before or after upgrading from Vista to Win 7?

  I just got a new SSD hard drive for my thinkpad laptop. I just installed Vista with the factory CDs. On my old OS, my main OS was Ubuntu but I do want to keep Windows on a separate partition as a dual booth system. I definitely want to upgrade to Win 7 though and I will get it in a few days. My question is: should I install Ubuntu now and then upgrade to Win 7 in a few days? or is that going to mess up with the grub (or something else)? If that is the case, then I'd rather wait to install Ubuntu until after I upgrade to Vista. P.S. I know that probably any kind of mess done by the Win upgrade could be fixed, but I just want to avoid wasting time.

• Do you know an FOSS alternative to EtherPad or a similar service with > 8 user limit?

  I'm at a summer program where about 30 students are taking collaborative notes during presentations. EtherPad works great for this but it has a limit of 8 users. Do you know any alternatives? Google Docs is not very robust for this kind of use (if you have used it before with more than 1 person you probably know).

• to escape or not to escape: well formed XHTML with diacritics

  Say that you have a XHTML document in English but it has accented characters (e.g. meta name="author" content="José"). Let's say you have no control over the HTTP headers. Should the characters be replaced for their corresponding named entities (e.g. á, etc)? Should the doc type and the xml:lang attribute be set to English? I know I can check the W3C recommendation but I am asking more from a practical point of view.
