• Using backport-android-bluetooth on Android 1.6

  Hi, I'm trying to write an application using Bluetooth on Android 1.6. Since it's not officially supported, I found the backport of android.bluetooth API ( http://code.google.com/p/backport-android-bluetooth ). But when I deploy the sample chat application (modified for backport) LogCat gives me the error below: My question is, how I can use backport-android-bluetooth on 1.6 and is there any working samples? • How to "reverse-backport" a package available on earlier Ubuntu distribution to later Distribution?

  There are 4 packages I am using on 12.04 which are not available on 12.10: xkcd-browser ;-) cuttlefish bluphone xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (it allows for touchpad rotation that could go along screen rotation with randr) Is there any way of more-or-less automatic reverse-backporting? (I know, that one "solution" is to wait. But unless I know for how long I should do it, it doesn't solve anything.)

• Upgrade with backports installed

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with backports for TexLive. Ubuntu 12.10 is to contain the same version of TexLive that backport provides currently to 12.04. I, of course, want to move from backport to the normal version of TexLive available in Ubuntu 12.10 repositories. How do I handle the situation? Do I upgrade the normal way and everything will be taken care of i.e. my TexLive installation will now be from repositories instead of backports?

• How to safely backport specific linux kernel commits to an older kernel using git

  I'm currently on a stable 2.6.32 kernel. But I need certain fixes on 2.6.33 branch to be incorporated into this 2.6.32 kernel so that I can create a custom kernel for testing purposes. I can't apply the said fixes directly to the 2.6.32 source because they seem to have dependencies on other fixes. Is there any safe way to incorporate only the fixes (and all their dependencies) I need into the 2.6.32 kernel with git to create a custom kernel? Assuming there is a way to do the above, is there a way to track the fixes that have been applied to the custom kernel (i.e. track which commits have been applied to the 2.6.32 kernel to create the custom kernel source)?

  I followed the advice of izx on how to install TexLive 2012 using the texlive-backports PPA. Before I started I removed all TexLive-related packages. The installation finished and everything seems to work fine. The only thing I noticed are some warnings in the output of the installer. • How can I downgrade a system that accidentally had backports installed?

  I installed a fresh Ubuntu system. Somehow - possibly through my own error - the backports repository got enabled. Then I did several upgrades. I noticed that this happened when networking suddenly stopped working, "Network Settings" now has an "(alpha)" in the title bar, "System Settings" ? "Network" now displays an error dialog saying "The system network services are not compatible with this version". Now, I've disabled the backports repository, and I'd like to restore my system to its previously-functional state. My question is twofold: How do I determine which packages were installed from backports? Can I automatically re-install all those packages (and purge their configuration) to get back to a sensible state? If the answer to 2 is "no" I can probably manually purge some things and reinstall, but it would be nice to have it handled automatically. Update: It wasn't an update that broke the network; it was apt-get install indicator-network, which installed something called "connman" and removed network-manager and network-manager-gnome. Nevertheless I am leaving the question up, since I am still interested in how I can purge packages from a particular source after accidentally adding that source, and how I can determine which packages were installed from where.

• Why is there a lack of Backports of Optional 10.10 or later Packages in repos?

  This question is about backports again, but is specific to the difference in availability of packages. A specific example of this would be the two gcc packages in 10.10's repos: gcc (which is 4.4), and gcc-4.5 (which is gcc 4.5). While this change is in 10.10's repositories, such optional packages aren't included in the 10.04 LTS repositories, and the option to have a gcc-4.5 compiler in 10.04 might help several people (such as myself, who needs the 4.5 compiler for University, and I can't upgrade to 10.10 because it doesnt operate correctly on my system). Is there a reason a lack of such optional packages is in the 10.04 repositories?

• Android bluetooth socket error

  I am using backport bluetooth api on android 1.6. I am using Google Bluetooth Chat sample app for testing. The app works fine in normal scenarios. In a scenario, when I try to connect to paired device which is in off state, I get following error. 01-04 09:00:11.629: ERROR/BluetoothEventLoop.cpp(84): onGetRemoteServiceChannelResult: D-Bus error: org.bluez.Error.ConnectionAttemptFailed (Host is down) 01-04 09:00:11.729: DEBUG/dalvikvm(128): GC freed 4535 objects / 256008 bytes in 296ms 01-04 09:00:21.880: ERROR/bluetooth_RfcommSocket.cpp(1433): connect error: Host is down (112) But it sets the state as connected. The app is unable to catch the exception. Why does it happen? Or is it the case with backport api? Any help is appreciated as I am struggling a lot to get things run fine.

• Accessing second hard drive

  So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my computer. I installed it on my 60gb SSD hard drive, and in the installation it never acknowledged the existence of my second hard drive. The hard drive that I keep all my files on, and which I want to make my home folder if I can, is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (WD1002FAEX). I've read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount but honestly cannot work out how to access the hard drive from my Ubuntu installation. I did have Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu. I have backed up all the files on the hard drive, but if I could just access them straight off that would be super cool. Does anyone know how I can use the second hard drive?   I want to backport gcc-4.7 from raring to precise. So I ran backportpackage and uploaded gcc-4.7 to my PPA. However, when Launchpad tries to build it it complains about a missing dependency: Dependency wait on rhenium (virtual64) Missing build dependencies: libx32gcc1 Started on 2013-10-24 Finished on 2013-10-24 (took 2 minutes, 46.6 seconds) From looking at the package info for gcc-4.7 it seems that this should also be contained in the gcc-4.7 package that has been backported. What do I need to do to make Launchpad find this and build my package?

• Package version updates policy

  Not sure if here it's the right place to ask, if not - please point me to the right direction. Let's say there's a package, for the sake of real-world example - bind9. In Precise and in Quantal it's version 9.8.1. The original developer (ISC) currently provide versions 9.8.4 which is a bugfix release in the 9.8 line, and 9.9.2 which is a "new features" branch. It looks like when a security issue is encountered, the specific bugfix is backported into 9.8.1. Now the question: Why maintainers don't just update to the latest bugfix release ? Why to backport only certain patches ? Is it intentionally or just there's no maintaner who would take the effort to update to the latest bugfix release ?

• Why is the pavucontrol level indicator jumping while nothing plays?

  The level indicator in the screenshot does jump around even if nothing is playing. The indicator also reasonably represents sound levels when music is playing. I dont have any mediaservers running or noisy browsertabs open. Also no mic connected. When I turn the volume to max in software and on the amp, there is no noise from the speakers at all. Played music is loud and not distorted. Hardware: Realtek ALC889 over optical audio connector to a generic amp. Software: Debian Wheezy with latest backport kernel 3.14 (same thing on wheezy 3.2 stock), wheezy pulseaudio, xfce session, a custom asound.conf that enables pulseaudio to push sound over optical port. /etc/asound.conf pcm.a52 { @args [CARD] @args.CARD { type string } type rate slave { pcm { type a52 bitrate 448 channels 6 card $CARD } rate 48000 #required somehow, otherwise nothing happens in PulseAudio } }

• Cannot move/drag/drop windows/items in remote VNC session

  I find it a little hard to believe that no one here has asked this question, I tried searching for it but it isn't asked, so here goes: I setup a Ubuntu desktop computer with VNC to use as a server. And use another Ubuntu desktop computer to VNC into it. The rest of the VNC works ok, but drag and drop with mouse is gone. Thus I can not move windows, or drag and drop items via VNC. I am using the default remote desktop in System - Preferences to setup my server. And use Remmina as my client. The same happens using MS Windows's VNC clients connecting to my Ubuntu desktop. I did a bit of searching on google, and there are actually a lot of reports regarding this issue. But, oddly there is no solution. There are even bug reports made for this since Ubuntu 9.10, yet here it still is in Ubuntu 11.04. There have been suggestions that the bugs is in gtk, as see in link below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1497635&page=2 libgtk2.0-0 stable(lenny) -> DnD works libgtk2.0-0 lenny-backport (libgtk2.0-0_2.18.6-1~bpo50+1_i386) -> DnD still works libgtk2.0-0 testing (libgtk2.0-0_2.20.1-2_i386) -> DnD broken please don't give answers such as "use NX", "use ssh -x" or "use x11vnc". I am aware that some people don't have this problem with x11vnc, and I have setup x11vnc before, but i can't for this setup. I am setting this up so Windows only friends/families can use it.

  I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). • Supporting rotation sensors in Symbian across multiple devices in one executable

  I'm puzzling my head as to how some application appear to support the couple of Rotational Sensor APIs for Symbian, specifically the Sensor API and the Sensor Framework (both the 5th ed. and the 3rd ed. FP2 backport). For example, I believe that Gravity will support rotation in N95 and also newer models from the same binary (could be wrong there...). If I use the Sensor Framework then my app will not install on an N95 (it gives me a System Error -1), whereas if I use the Sensor API (RRSensor) then it will only install on an N95 and no other phones. This is most likely due to the available libraries on those devices. I am trying to find some way of abstracting things such that I can use exactly the same binary for all devices. The only alternative I can see is trying to use ECOM plugins and then installing the relevant library using conditionals in my PKG file. Does anyone know of a better/easier way?

• Getting WLAN on my Laptop to work (Medion MD98300)

  Dear Ubuntu Community, I am having difficulties to get the WLAN Adapter on my Medion 98300 Laptop to work. The WLAN Card seems to be connected through an internal USB Interface and the Card itself had shown up as a wirelles Network while installing Ubuntu. I have tried a few things earlier, but none of my google reasearches have brought me to a working solution... I am quite new to the Linux System and only knoew a couple of terminal commands so far, so I probably have missed out on a few possible solutions. Maybe you can help me? Thank you very much in advance! A fre minimal technical Details: AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technolgie TL-50 NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 SanDisk 64GB SSD 2GB RAM DDR2 667 nForce Chipset (I forgt the Version, but deductable from the GPU I guess) WiFi: ZyDAS ZD1211B 802.11g Thank's a lot again! :) UPDATE: I tried around myself a little and found a guide on the Linux Mint forums that helped! I already had tried to install the linux backport modules etc. What I finally did was update the linux firmware and run the following command: echo "options acer_wmi wirelles=1" sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/acer_wmi.conf and rebooted now I found and could connect to networks, but unfortunately I found, that the link quality was very bad, around 40 to 50. Eventhough my Router is running at high power and is only 6 Meters away! I then switched a few channels, but that did not improve much. Before, under Windows, I had a very good link quality and had the entire 16mbit/s internet connection at disposal, now I can only get about 3-5Mbit/s. better then nothing, but still pretty bad! The "TX power" is fixed on 20dBm and iwconfig says, that the "Power Management" is off... Maybe the power of the module is set too low?... UPDATE2: I figured that 20dBm is a normal power output. I even tried to change the power using iwconfig wlan0 txpower INTEGERHERE but, obviously my "Card" does not support more then 20. More would probably be illegal as well, so I won't even use more then 20. I guess that I will have to figure out a way, or maybe just switch cards. Are the Mailboard-USB-Connectors on a laptop of the same property as the standard external ones? If so, I could simply solder a micro Wirelless N Adapter onto the board :)

  Oracle BI EE 11.1.1.5.0 Bundle Patch 2 is available. The Patch number is 13611078 and it can be downloaded from Oracle Support (you can download it without password). This patch currently is available on Microsoft Windows x64 (64 bit), Linux x86 - 64 bit, IBM AIX on Power System (64 bit) and Oracle Solaris Sparc (64 bit). Remaining four platforms Win32, Linux32, HP-Itanium, and Solaris x86-64 are expected 3-4 weeks later. This Patch has thoroughly been tested and signed off by BI QA Team.  Important things to know: 1. All the customers are advised to apply this patch as it contains around 248 bug fixes. Please read the README file for all the bug fixes contained in this patch.   2. This patch can be applied via opatch. Please follow the standard process of applying this patch using opatch, i.e. stop all BI System processes via opmnctl, Stop WLS Managed and Admin Servers, Apply Patch, Start WLS Admin and Managed Servers, Check if all the J2EE applications are running fine, Start all BI System Processes via opmnctl command, and verify your fixes. It is advised to test this patch on Non Productions Instances first, run all the required tests / regressions and then move it to Production.    3. This Bundle Patch is cumulative to 11.1.1.5.0 BP1 (13562882) which was released in January 2012 on Linux x86 - 64 bit which contained around 64 bug fixes. Customers who have applied 11.1.1.5.0 BP1, will get expected OPatch conflict message, they can safely roll back BP1 prior to installing this BP2 or let opatch roll back BP1 during its application process.   4. Customer who have applied some one off patches and these one off patches are also part of 11.1.1.5.0 BP2, they can also roll back their existing one off patches after confirming that their fixes are part of BP2.    5. This Bundle Patch is not cumulative on top of 11.1.1.5.0, meaning this bundle patch does not contain all the one off fixes that were delivered on top of 11.1.1.5.0. All the remaining one off fixes delivered so far, will be available in next scheduled bundle patch i.e. 11.1.1.5.0 BP3. Please check the README file and let support know if your existing fixes are not part of BP2, so that support can open One Off Backport (OOB) request to have them included in next patch i.e. BP3.   6. 11.1.1.5.0 BP3 is in planning stages, and dates for it's availability will be announced in next couple of weeks.

• Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter not recognized

  The Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter will not be recognized by my netbook (Ubuntu 14.04, Asus X201E). As I understand it, the drivers should already be built in to this version of Linux, but I tried a make/make install of the latest Realtek drivers (as mentioned on How do I install drivers for the Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter?) and it didn't work. I then followed the advice of this thread (ALFA AWUS036NH driver) and did a make/make install of the most up-to-date backport of the drivers, but that didn't work. At this point I tried a series of commands from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2187780) in an attempt to identify the problem, but at no point could I get the laptop to ever recognize the USB adapter. I have also troubleshot the USB cable itself, tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the laptop, have never received an error message regarding a need to update the firmware, and have seemingly successfully installed all manner of variation of Realtek drivers which were supposed to make the adapter work. (I also tried to delete/clean up after each install, in the hope I wasn't making things worse.) Not sure what I should do next. Please let me know if I need to post any more information. • JDK bug migration milestone: JIRA now the system of record

  I'm pleased to announce the OpenJDK bug database migration project has reached a significant milestone: the JDK has switched from the legacy Sun "bugtraq" system to a new internal JIRA instance as the system of record for our bug tracking. This completes the initial phase of the previously described plan of getting OpenJDK onto an externally visible and writable bug tracker. The identities contained in the current system include recognized OpenJDK contributors. The bug migration effort to date has been sizable in multiple dimensions. There are around 140,000 distinct issues imported into the JDK project of the JIRA instance, nearly 165,000 if backport issues to track multiple-release information are included. Separately, the Code Tools OpenJDK project has its own JIRA project populated with several thousands existing bugs. Once the OpenJDK JIRA instance is externalized, approved OpenJDK projects will be able to request the creation of a JIRA project for issue tracking. There are many differences in the schema used to model bugs between the legacy bug system and the schema for the new JIRA projects. We've favored simplifications to the existing system where possible and, after much discussion, we've settled on five main states for the OpenJDK JIRA projects: New Open In progress Resolved Closed The Open and In-progress states can have a substate Understanding field set to track whether the issues has its "Cause Known" or "Fix understood". In the closed state, a Verification field can indicate whether a fix has been verified, unverified, or if the fix has failed. At the moment, there will be very little externally visible difference between JIRA for OpenJDK and the legacy system it replaces. One difference is that bug numbers for newly filed issues in the JIRA JDK project will be 8000000 and above. If you are working with JDK Hg repositories, update any local copies of jcheck to the latest version which recognizes this expanded bug range. (The bug numbers of existing issues have been preserved on the import into JIRA). Relatively soon, we plan for the pages published on bugs.sun.com to be generated from information in JIRA rather than in the legacy system. When this occurs, there will be some differences in the page display and the terminology used will be revised to reflect JIRA usage, such as referring to the "component/subcomponent" of an issue rather than its "category". The exact timing of this transition will be announced when it is known. We don't currently have a firm timeline for externalization of the JIRA system. Updates will be provided as they become available. However, that is unlikely to happen before JavaOne next week!

• Check for updates of a specific Debian package list

  The setup I run a Debian Squeeze host that I use to build a multilanguage project (python, java, php...) and generate custom packages (debian and RPM) automatically (through jenkins) The problem The target distributions of those Debian packages are Etch, Lenny and Squeeze. But our project has some native dependencies that are available only through the DebianRelease + 1 repository (i.e Lenny + 1 == Squeeze, Squeeze + 1 == Wheezy). We for example, need the jetty packages from Squeeze in Lenny, and the cyrus-imapd-2.4 packages from Wheezy in Squeeze. Some additional info : Some package we can simply 'backport by hand' by mirroring the DebianRelease + 1 packages to our own repositories. For instance, the jetty package from Squeeze will run fine on Lenny because it doesn't need an s**tload of additional dependencies However we do need to rebuild some packages. For instance, cyrus-imapd-2.4 from Wheezy has a lot of unsatisfied dependencies on Squeeze. So we need to rebuild it in Squeeze and then upload it to our repo. The question I need to have a simple way of knowing if they are any updates on those extra packages (both "normal" and "security" updates). I could write a simple script that runs weekly, get some parameters from a file, and generate an update report. Let's say the file looks like this: jetty:squeeze cyrus-imapd-2.4:wheezy The script should run as normal user not to mess up the system apt configuration and issue the appropriate commands to generate that report. Does Debian has some built-in apt-* commands/options dedicated to that kind of problem I could use to write this script ? If not, can someone think of another clean solution to achieve what I need ?

• I am trying to set up a ubuntu sever 12.04 on my machine [migrated]

  I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). However here what i try to do I kinda fellow his tutorial http://www.ubuntugeek.com/step-by-step-ubuntu-11-04-natty-lamp-server-setup.html but however the command where not 100% like him not in same order but same idea. Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it. • MySQL problem with many concurrent connections

  Hi, here's a sixcore with 32 GB RAM. I've installed MySQL 5.1.47 (backport). Config is nearly standard, except max_connections, which is set to 2000. On the other hand there is PHP5.3/FastCGI on nginx. There is a very simple php application which should be served. NGINX can handle thousands of request parallel on this machine. This application accesses MySQL via mysqli. When using non-persistent connections in mysqli there is a problem when reaching 100 concurrent connections. [error] 14074#0: *296 FastCGI sent in stderr: "PHP Warning: mysqli::mysqli(): [2002] Resource temporarily unavailable (trying to connect via unix:///tmp/mysqld.sock) in /var/www/libs/db.php on line 7 I've no idea to solve this. Connecting via tcp to mysql is terrible slow. The interesting thing is, when using persistent connections (add 'p:' to hostname in mysqli) the first 5000-10000 thousand requests fail with the same error as above until max connections (from webserver, set to 1500) is reached. After the first requests MySQL keeps it 1500 open connections and all is fine, so that I can make my 1500 concurrent requests. Huh? Is it possible, that this is a problem with PHP FastCGI?
