  • Action Mailer Confirmation Emails - Ruby on Rails...

    - by bgadoci
I have successfully installed the Clearance Gem from ThoughtBot. Clearance sends a confirmation email upon a new sign_up and suggests adding: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'localhost:3000' } to your /environments/test.rb and development.rb. I have tried this and also config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => '127.0.0.1', :port => 3000 } But can't seem to get rails to send the email. As I am new to both Ruby and Rails, I am wondering if there is some step/config that ThoughtBot is assuming I have already done to send emails. What am I doing wrong/missing? UPDATE: Just added notifier.rb class Notifier < ActionMailer::Base recipients recipient.email_address_with_name bcc ["[email protected]"] from "[email protected]" subject "New account information" body :account => recipient end end

  • Installing Paperclip - "undefined method `has_attached_file` for" - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I just installed the plugin for Paperclip and I am getting an error message "undefined method has_attached_file for. Not sure why I am getting this. Here is the full error message. NoMethodError (undefined method `has_attached_file' for #<Class:0x10338acd0>): /Users/bgadoci/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/will_paginate-2.3.12/lib/will_paginate/finder.rb:170:in `method_missing' app/models/post.rb:2 app/controllers/posts_controller.rb:50:in `show' For some reason it is referencing the will_paginate gem. From what I can find, it seems that either there is something wrong w/ my PostsController#index or perhaps a previously attempt at installing the gem instead of the plugin (in which case I have read I should be able to remedy through the /config/environments.rb file somehow). I didn't think that previous gem installation would matter as I did it in an old version of the site that I trashed before installing the plugin. In the current version of the site I show that the Table has been updated with the Paperclip columns after migration. Here is my code: PostsController#index def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • "'0.offsetWidth' is null or not an object" - Coda Slider - Javascript Error Question

    - by bgadoci
I implemented the Coda Slider tutorial successfully that is located here: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/coda-slider-effect/ The slider works great but I am getting a javascript error that I am not sure how to fix. The error says: '0.offsetWidth' is null or not an object coda-slider.js, line 19 character 3 Not sure how to fix it. Anyone have any ideas? Here is my js and css (don't think I need to upload the HTML but let me know if that helps). JS (coda-slider.js) // when the DOM is ready... $(document).ready(function () { var $panels = $('#slider .scrollContainer > div'); var $container = $('#slider .scrollContainer'); // if false, we'll float all the panels left and fix the width // of the container var horizontal = true; // float the panels left if we're going horizontal if (horizontal) { $panels.css({ 'float' : 'left', 'position' : 'relative' // IE fix to ensure overflow is hidden }); // calculate a new width for the container (so it holds all panels) $container.css('width', $panels[0].offsetWidth * $panels.length); <------line 19 } // collect the scroll object, at the same time apply the hidden overflow // to remove the default scrollbars that will appear var $scroll = $('#slider .scroll').css('overflow', 'hidden'); // apply our left + right buttons $scroll .before('<img class="scrollButtons left" src="/images/layout/navigation/scroll_left.png" />') .after('<img class="scrollButtons right" src="/images/layout/navigation/scroll_right.png" />'); // handle nav selection function selectNav() { $(this) .parents('ul:first') .find('a') .removeClass('selected') .end() .end() .addClass('selected'); } $('#slider .navigation').find('a').click(selectNav); // go find the navigation link that has this target and select the nav function trigger(data) { var el = $('#slider .navigation').find('a[href$="' + data.id + '"]').get(0); selectNav.call(el); } if (window.location.hash) { trigger({ id : window.location.hash.substr(1) }); } else { $('ul.navigation a:first').click(); } // offset is used to move to *exactly* the right place, since I'm using // padding on my example, I need to subtract the amount of padding to // the offset. Try removing this to get a good idea of the effect var offset = parseInt((horizontal ? $container.css('paddingTop') : $container.css('paddingLeft')) || 0) * -1; var scrollOptions = { target: $scroll, // the element that has the overflow // can be a selector which will be relative to the target items: $panels, navigation: '.navigation a', // selectors are NOT relative to document, i.e. make sure they're unique prev: 'img.left', next: 'img.right', // allow the scroll effect to run both directions axis: 'xy', onAfter: trigger, // our final callback offset: offset, // duration of the sliding effect duration: 500, // easing - can be used with the easing plugin: // http://gsgd.co.uk/sandbox/jquery/easing/ easing: 'swing' }; // apply serialScroll to the slider - we chose this plugin because it // supports// the indexed next and previous scroll along with hooking // in to our navigation. $('#slider').serialScroll(scrollOptions); // now apply localScroll to hook any other arbitrary links to trigger // the effect $.localScroll(scrollOptions); // finally, if the URL has a hash, move the slider in to position, // setting the duration to 1 because I don't want it to scroll in the // very first page load. • dublicate display of Posts from controller - conditions and joins problem - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have built a blog application using Ruby on Rails. In the application I have posts and tags. Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. In the /views/posts/index.html view I want to display two things. First is a listing of all posts displayed 'created_at DESC' and then in the side bar I am wanting to reference my Tags table, group records, and display as a link that allows for viewing all posts with that tag. With the code below, I am able to display the tag groups and succesfully display all posts with that tag. There are two problems with it thought. /posts view, the code seems to be referencing the Tag table and displaying the post multiple times, directly correlated to how many tags that post has. (i.e. if the post has 3 tags it will display the post 3 times). /posts view, only displays posts that have Tags. If the post doesn't have a tag, no display at all. /views/posts/index.html.erb <%= render :partial => @posts %> /views/posts/_post.html.erb <% div_for post do %> <h2><%= link_to_unless_current h(post.title), post %></h2> <i>Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(post.created_at) %></i> ago <%= simple_format h truncate(post.body, :length => 300) %> <%= link_to "Read More", post %> | <%= link_to "View & Add Comments (#{post.comments.count})", post %> <hr/> <% end %> /models/post.rb class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :body, :title has_many :comments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy cattr_reader :per_page @@per_page = 10 end posts_controller.rb def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) @posts=Post.all(:joins => :tags,:conditions=>(params[:tag_name] ? { :tags => { :tag_name => params[:tag_name] }} : {} ) ).paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 5 respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end

  • link_to passing paramater and display problem - tag feature - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have gotten a great deal of help from KandadaBoggu on my last question and very very thankful for that. As we were getting buried in the comments I wanted to break this part out. I am attempting to create a tag feature on the rails blog I am developing. The relationship is Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. Adding and deleting tags to posts are working great. In my /view/posts/index.html.erb I have a section called tags where I am successfully querying the Tags table, grouping them and displaying the count next to the tag_name (as a side note, I mistakenly called the column containing the tag name, 'tag_name' instead of just 'name' as I should have) . In addition the display of these groups are a link that is referencing the index method in the PostsController. That is where the problem is. When you navigate to /posts you get an error because there is no parameter being passed (without clicking the tag group link). I have the .empty? in there so not sure what is going wrong here. Here is the error and code: Error You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! You might have expected an instance of Array. The error occurred while evaluating nil.empty? /views/posts/index.html.erb <% @tag_counts.each do |tag_name, tag_count| %> <tr> <td><%= link_to(tag_name, posts_path(:tag_name => tag_name)) %></td> <td>(<%=tag_count%>)</td> </tr> <% end %> PostsController def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) @posts=Post.all(:joins => :tags,:conditions=>(params[:tag_name].empty? ? {}: { :tags => { :tag_name => params[:tag_name] }} ) ) respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end

  • Creating a Blog ruby on Rails - Problem Deleting Comments

    - by bgadoci
As I always type I am new to rails and programming in general so go easy. Thanks in advance. I have successfully followed the initial tutorial from Ryan Bates on how to build a weblog in 15 minutes. If you don't know this tutorial takes you through creating posts and allowing for comments on those post. It even introduces AJAX through the creating and displaying comments on the posts show.html.erb page. All works great. Here's the hiccup, when Ryan takes you though this tutorial he clears out the comments_controller and only shows the code for creating comments. I am trying to add back the ability to edit and destroy comments. Can't see to get it to work, keeps deleting the actual post not the comment (log shows that I keep sending DELETE request to PostsController). Here is my code: class CommentsController < ApplicationController def create @post = Post.find(params[:post_id]) @comment = @post.comments.create!(params[:comment]) respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to @post } format.js end end def destroy @comment = Comment.find(params[:id]) @comment.destroy respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(posts_url) } format.xml { head :ok } end end end /views/posts/show.html.erb <%= render :partial => @post %> <p> <%= link_to 'Edit', edit_post_path (@post) %> | <%= link_to 'Destroy', @post, :method => :delete, :confirm => "Are you sure?" %> | <%= link_to 'See All Posts', posts_path %> </p> <h2>Comments</h2> <div id="comments"> <%= render :partial => @post.comments %> </div> <% remote_form_for [@post, Comment.new] do |f| %> <p> <%= f.label :body, "New Comment" %><br/> <%= f.text_area :body %> </p> <p> <%= f.submit "Add Comment" %></p> <% end %> /views/comments/_comment.html.erb <% div_for comment do %> <p> <strong>Posted <%= time_ago_in_words(comment.created_at) %> ago </strong><br/> <%= h(comment.body) %><br/> <%= link_to 'Destroy', @comments, :method => :delete, :confirm => "Are you sure?" %> </p> <% end %>

  • current_user and Comments on Posts - Create another association or loop posts? - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have created a blog application using Ruby on Rails and have just added an authentication piece and it is working nicely. I am now trying to go back through my application to adjust the code such that it only shows information that is associated with a certain user. Currently, Users has_many :posts and Posts has_many :comments. When a post is created I am successfully inserting the user_id into the post table. Additionally I am successfully only displaying the posts that belong to a certain user upon their login in the /views/posts/index.html.erb view. My problem is with the comments. For instance on the home page, when logged in, a user will see only posts that they have written, but comments from all users on all posts. Which is not what I want and need some direction in correcting. I want only to display the comments written on all of the logged in users posts. Do I need to create associations such that comments also belong to user? Or is there a way to adjust my code to simply loop through post to display this data. I have put the code for the PostsController, CommentsController, and /posts/index.html.erb below and also my view code but will post more if needed. class PostsController < ApplicationController before_filter :authenticate auto_complete_for :tag, :tag_name auto_complete_for :ugtag, :ugctag_name def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @ugtag_counts = Ugtag.count(:group => :ugctag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • will_paginate undefined method error - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
    I just installed the gem for will_paginate and it says that it was installed successfully. I followed all the instructions listed with the plugin and I am getting an 'undefined method `paginate' for' error. Can't find much in the way of Google search and haven't been able to fix it myself (obviously). Here is the code: PostsController def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) @posts = Post.paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 50 respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end /model/post.rb class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :body, :title has_many :comments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :tags, :dependent => :destroy cattr_reader :per_page @@per_page = 10 end /posts/views/index.html.erb <%= will_paginate @posts %>

  • Inserting variable into routes - map.resources :posts, :as => X - is this possible?

    - by bgadoci
Ok, so I am working on a blog application of sorts. Thus far, it allows for a user to sign up for their own account, create posts, tags, comments, etc. I have just implemented the ability to use www.myapp.com/brandon to set @user to find by username and therefore correctly display the users information at each url. So when you go to www.myapp.com/brandon you see all Brandon's posts, tags, and comments associated with those posts, etc. Works great. I'm implementing this URL mapping through the routes.rb file by adding the following: map.username_link '/:username', :controller => 'posts', :action => 'index' And then just setting the @user variable in the PostController and corresponding views to find_by_username. Now the issue is this. Once at www.myapp.com/brandon when you click on a post title, it sends to myapp.com/posts/id without the username in the URL. How do I tell rails to replace the /posts with /username. Is it even possible to insert the user_username variable into this code? map.resources :posts, :as => [what goes here]

  • link_to_function toggle problem - Ruby on Rails

I asked this question back in November and everything seemed to work just fine. I am recently trying to implement it again and running into a problem. • Altering URLs and mapping - path_prefix? - Ruby on Rails...

Now the issue is this. Once at www.myapp.com/brandon when you click on a post title, it sends to myapp.com/posts/id without the username in the URL which blows up my view because nothing is being set for the @user variable. How do I tell Rails to create the link reading www.myapp.com/brandon/posts/id vs www.myapp.com/posts/id and then map that action? I am assuming this will involve some code in the view, and then adding another line in the routes.rb file, map.subdomain_link '/:username/posts/:id', :controller => 'posts', :action => 'show' and adding the @user variable to the PostController#show action, but not totally sure if this is even the right approach. UPDATE: I have been reading about :path_prefix and seems like it might be what I am looking for. I have tried to implement simply by adding map.resources :posts, :path_prefix => '/:user_username/:post_id' to the routes.rb file but not working (even after server restart). I am sure this is not correct but wanted to let you know what I have tried.

  • Adding Table Columns to a Group by clause - Ruby on Rails - Postgresql

    - by bgadoci
I am trying to use Heroku and apparently Postgresql is a lot more strict than SQL for aggregate functions. When I am pushing to Heroku I am getting an error stating the below. On another question I asked I received some guidance that said I should just add the columns to my group by clause and I am not sure how to do that. See the full error below and the PostsControll#index. SELECT posts.*, count(*) as vote_total FROM "posts" INNER JOIN "votes" ON votes.post_id = posts.id GROUP BY votes.post_id ORDER BY created_at DESC LIMIT 5 OFFSET 0): PostsController def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @ugtag_counts = Ugtag.count(:group => :ugctag_name, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes @vote_counts = Vote.count(:group => :post_title, :order => 'count_all DESC', :limit => 20) conditions, joins = {}, :votes unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? • WYSIHAT Installation - not saving photos - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I just successfully installed WysiHat in my rails blog. Seems that the 'add a picture' feature is not working. It successfully allows me to find and select a picture from my desktop but upon clicking save, it does nothing. I also have Paperclip successfully installed. I am wondering if this may have something to do with it. Perhaps Paperclip is getting in the way, or, perhaps I need to connect Paperclip and WysiHat somehow. Any ideas? (let me know if I need to post any code).

  • Error when pushing to Heroku - StatementInvalid - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I am trying to deploy my first rails app to Heroku and seem to be having a problem. After git push heroku master I get an error saying that relation "tags does not exist. I understand that without knowledge of my application it will be hard to help but I am wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I have checked the schema.rb file and also been over all my migrations and there doesn't seem to be a problem there. The error message lead me to believe that I left something out of my routes.rb file but can't seem to find anything there either. Perhaps just some help deciphering this message. • Displaying most popular posts on my blog - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I have created a simple blog application using Ruby on Rails, both of which I am new to. I am trying to get my most 'voted' posts to display in my /views/posts/index.html.erb view. Here are the basics. I have created a votes table and successfully allow a user to 'vote' for a post on the /views/posts/show.html.erb page. When they vote, it passes '1' to the votes table and I return the vote count via ajax to the same show page. Vote belongs_to :post and Post has_many :votes. I would like to display in /views/posts/index.html.erb the post title and the amount of times it has been voted for, ordered by posts with the highest vote count. Any ideas on how to do this?

  • WYSIHAT Photos upload not working - Paperclip - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I just successfully installed WysiHat in my rails blog. Seems that the 'add a picture' feature is not working. It successfully allows me to find and select a picture from my desktop but upon clicking save, it does nothing. I also have Paperclip successfully installed. I am wondering if this may have something to do with it. Perhaps Paperclip is getting in the way, or, perhaps I need to connect Paperclip and WysiHat somehow. Any ideas? (let me know if I need to post any code). Also, WysiHat-engine uses facebox, not sure if that is relevant. • Authlogic Current User Question - hiding admin links...

    - by bgadoci
I think I am missing something while using the Authlogic gem w/ Rails. To set the stage I have multiple users and each user can create posts and comments. Upon the display of a post or comment I would like to give the user who created them the option to edit or destroy. I am successfully using the following code to hide and show elements based on if a user is logged in or not but can't seem to find out how to only show these links to the actual user who created them...not any user that is logged in. <% if current_user %> <%= link_to 'Edit', edit_question_path(question) %> | <%= link_to 'Destroy', question, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :method => :delete %> <% else %> <p>nothing to see here</p> <% end %> Here is the def of current_user located in the application controller in case I need to change something here. class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base helper :all # include all helpers, all the time protect_from_forgery # See ActionController::RequestForgeryProtection for details# helper_method :current_user private def current_user_session return @current_user_session if defined?(@current_user_session) @current_user_session = UserSession.find end def current_user return @current_user if defined?(@current_user) @current_user = current_user_session && current_user_session.record end end

  • Ordering view by highest group count question - Ruby on Rails

    - by bgadoci
I've read the couple of questions about this on stack overflow but can't seem to find the answer. I am trying to display the tags in my blog by the ones with the highest count in the tags table. Thanks to KandadaBoggu for helping me get the tags feature of the blog I am designing working. Here is the basics and my question. Tag belongs_to :post and Post has_many :tags. The tags table is simple really, consisting of the normal scaffolded fields plus post_id and tag_name (I actually called the column 'tag_name' instead of just 'name'). in my /views/posts/index.html/erb file I correctly am displaying the tags by group and the amount of times they are being used (appearing in the tags table). I just want to know how to order them by the highest count. Here is the code, and I currently have it set to updated_at: PostsController def index @tag_counts = Tag.count(:group => :tag_name, :order => 'updated_at DESC', :limit => 10) conditions, joins = {}, nil unless(params[:tag_name] || "").empty? conditions = ["tags.tag_name = ? ", params[:tag_name]] joins = :tags end @posts=Post.all(:joins => joins, :conditions=> conditions, :order => 'created_at DESC').paginate :page => params[:page], :per_page => 5 respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } format.json { render :json => @posts } format.atom end end

Ok so got through my last problem with the difference between Postgresql and SQLite and seems like Heroku is telling me I have another one. • Athentication Problem - not recognizing 'else' - Ruby on rails...

    - by bgadoci
I can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong here. I have implemented the Super Simple Authentication from Ryan Bates tutorial and while the login portion is functioning correctly, I can't get an error message and redirect to happen correctly for a bad login. Ryan Bates admits in his comments he left this out but can't seem to implement his recommendation. Basically what is happening is that when someone logs in correctly it works. When a bad password is entered it does the same redirect and flashes 'successfully logged in' thought they are not. The admin links do not show (which is correct and are the links protected by the <% if admin? %) but I need it to say 'failed login' and redirect to login path. Here is my code: SessionsController class SessionsController < ApplicationController def create if session[:password] = params[:password] flash[:notice] = 'Successfully logged in' redirect_to posts_path else flash[:notice] = "whoops" redirect_to login_path end end def destroy reset_session flash[:notice] = 'Successfully logged out' redirect_to posts_path end end ApplicationController class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base helper_method :admin? protected def authorize unless admin? flash[:error] = "unauthorized request" redirect_to posts_path false end end def admin? session[:password] == "string0826" end helper :all # include all helpers, all the time protect_from_forgery # See ActionController::RequestForgeryProtection for details # end

  • How do I create Twitter style URL's for my app - Using existing application or app redesign - Ruby o

    - by bgadoci
I have developed a blog application of sorts that I am trying to allow other users to take advantage of (for free and mostly for family). I wondering if the authentication I have set up will allow for such a thing. Here is the scenario. Currently the application allows for users to sign up for an account and when they do so they can create blog posts and organize those posts via tags. The application displays no data publicly (another words, you have to login to see anything). To gain access you have to create an account and even after you do, you cannot see anyone else's information as the applications filters using the current_user method and displays in the /posts/index.html.erb page. This would be great if a user only wanted to blog and share it with themselves, not really what I am looking for. My question has two parts (hopefully I won't make anyone mad by not putting these into two questions) Is it possible for a particular users data to live at www.myapplication.com/user without moving everything to the /user/show.html.erb file? Is it possible to make some of that information (living at the URL) public but still require login for create and destroy actions. Essentially, exactly like twitter. I am just curious if I can get from where I am (using the current_user methods across controllers to display in /posts/index.html.erb) to where I want to be. My fear is that I have to redesign the app such that the user data lives in the /user/show.html.erb page. Thoughts?
