  • Intel Pentium 4 vs. Faster Celeron

    A few months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that had a 2.4GHz Celeron. My old system had a 1.7GHz Pentium 4, so now I’m trying to decide which CPU to use. Obviously a P4 is preferable over a Celeron, but the Celeron is (significantly?) faster than the P4. I’m wondering if the faster Celeron might be better for certain tasks (ie, stronger but dumber is better at some things than smarter but weaker). I tried Googling for some reviews and comparisons for graphs to get a clear depiction of which is better overall, but found nothing that helped. (I did manage to find one page that indicates (apparently by poll, not benchmark) that the Celeron is better.) So which CPU should I use? Does anyone know of some graphs that I can use to compare the two?

  • Reading cpu temperature Intel Celeron (R) with lm-sensors

    I know there are already a lot of questions like this, but non of the answers provided there could fix my problem. I try to read out my cpu temperature with lm-sensors on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation but I can't get to work. I did try the command sensors-detect several times but still nothing. My computer is an old PC with an Intel Celeron (R) @ 2.60 GHz. The odd thing is that the hdd temp is shown in the applet but when I type in the terminal sensors I get the error: "No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need." I'm not really interested in the hdd temperature but I think it is strange that these sensors do work in the applet and not in the terminal.   • Is there a CPU that can be described as "Celeron D 4xx model"?

    The "D" letter after Celeron appears to only be used for processors numbered with 3xx. Celerons of the 4xx series do not seem to have the "D". And yet I am looking at a motherboard described as supporting these processors: Intel Celeron D 3xx and 4xx models Intel Pentium 4 5xx and 6xx models Intel Pentium D 8xx and 9xx models Intel Core 2 Duo models with LGA775 Is this compatible with a Celeron 450, sSpec SLAFZ, despite not having a "D" in its name?

  • I need to build a mini computer lab with 6 PCs

    Hello everyone, This weekend I need to build a mini computer lab with 5-6 PCs. The purpose is for a small computer class that will be taking place. They're mostly going to be doing office and daily kind of stuff, so nothing high performance. However, I hope it will last at least for 2 more years. I already have some parts for 2 PCs, one is a P4 3.0 and another is Celeron 2.4GHz, both socket 478. For the other 4 PCs, I'm wondering if I should buy individual parts and put it all together or get workstations like those Dell Optiplex with P4s. To put things into perspective, I am not currently in the US. I'm in South America and prices here are ridiculously. Another really important thing is that I need to share an internet connection between a total of 8 PCs at this place. Right now I only have a crappy wireless router, should I get another one? Or go with switch hub? I'm not experienced in this matter. Thanks guys!

  • Is the Core i5 Processor from Intel like the Celerons of yesteryear?

    The title pretty much says it. I know that the Core i7's are Quad Core and Hyper-threaded (so 4 cores, and 8 logical), and the Core i5's are Quad Core as well but not Hyper-threaded, does this really make a difference? Or are the only people who are going to care are the ones who CPU intensive operations? I'm a developer, so I'm more concerned about hard drive speed most times than CPU speed. Any thoughts?

    I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz). I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP (same Celeron 333MHz) with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

  • Laptop screen not detected but ubuntu working on other monitor

    I have a laptop with with intel celeron inside 64 bit, the 64 bit amd ubuntu 11.10 is working on the laptop, just it wont detect the laptop screen but the same live usb worked on amd 64 pc, When i connected the desktop computer monitor to the laptop it worked perfectly with 1920x1080 screen, battery, WIFI. Im not sure if its cause i made the usb it with LiLo live usb creator on the desktop pc, should i remake the usb on the laptop?

    I have a Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 which is about three years old. The processor is currently an Intel Celeron 900. Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade this to a newer one? I have heard the Core 2 Duo T6600 is a compatible replacement for my processor on other brands of computers, and I know the two have the same socket type (PGA478).
