What order are the programming languages derived in?

For instance, I know that basically all languages that are object oriented based are basically derivatives of C# or C++ correct? Does anyone know the order they came in? Like C - C++ - C# - PHP, etc.

Where did the term 'slug' come from?

Is it an acronym? Or someone just coined the term and it stuck? I can't see how it relates to what it actually is.

What is a reverse reference to the DOM object?

In this link: http://css-tricks.com/snippets/jquery/jquery-plugin-template/ it has a line of code that says // Add a reverse reference to the DOM object base.$el.data("yourPluginName", base); what does the "reverse reference to the DOM object" mean?

Which version control systems will allow only one user to work on a file at a time?

I'd like it so when I check out a file no one else can edit it until I check it back in. Is there a version control system that allows me to do this? I currently use Subversion and I know it has the 'lock' feature but I want it to do that automatically without me having to request it on each file I'm working on.

Is there a way to check if a var is using setInterval() ?

For instance, I am setting an interval like timer = setInterval(fncName, 1000); and if i go and do clearInterval(timer); it does clear the interval but is there a way to check that it cleared the interval? I've tried getting the value of it while it has an interval and when it doesn't but they both just seem to be numbers.

Is it possible to use extract() with an array key name 'some.key'?

If I am going to use the code: extract( array( 'key.name' => 'value', 'somekey' => 'somevalue' ) ) Is there some way for me to retrieve the first value? E.g. ${'key.name'} or similar. I know I can retrieve the second value with $somekey but I am curious if its possible with . in the name.
