Are you someone who loves using Google Chrome or ChromeOS, but have been frustrated by the lack of parental controls? Then this bit of news will definitely cheer you up! Google has introduced a new supervised users feature into the beta channels of Chrome and ChromeOS that will help you lock your browser or system down and better protect your children. Screenshot courtesy of Google Chrome Blog. The process of setting up supervised user accounts is basically the same as adding additional user accounts to your browser and/or system. Once you have the new user accounts added, then log into the supervised users homepage to start managing the level of access for each new account. • Latest Chrome Canary Channel Build Adds Automatic ‘Malware Download’ Blocking Feature

    - by Akemi Iwaya
As Chrome’s popularity continues to grow, malware authors are looking for new ways to target and trick users of Google’s browser into downloading malicious software to their computers. With this problem in mind, Google has introduced a new feature into the Canary Channel to automatically detect and block malware downloads whenever possible in order to help keep your system intact and safe. Screenshot courtesy of The Google Chrome Blog. In addition to the recent Reset Feature added to the stable build of Chrome this past August, the new feature in the Canary Channel build works to help protect you as follows: From the Google Chrome Blog post: In the current Canary build of Chrome, we’ll automatically block downloads of malware that we detect. If you see this message in the download tray at the bottom of your screen, you can click “Dismiss” knowing Chrome is working to keep you safe. (See screenshot above.) You can learn more about the new feature and download the latest Canary Channel build via the links below. Don’t mess with my browser! • Getting error: "This webpage is not available" for my chrome app's options page

    - by Don Rhummy
My CRX had the proper html page options.html in it, the manifest declares it properly (it shows up as a link on the chrome://extensions page) but when I click that link, Chrome gives the error: This webpage is not available The webpage at chrome-extension://invalid/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. It says "invalid" but the app runs perfectly well (all the content scripts run, the background created a database and saved to it). Why would it show as invalid? Why doesn't it have the extensions' id? Here's the manifest: { "manifest_version": 2, "name": "MyAPP", "description": "My App", "version": "0.0.0.32", "minimum_chrome_version": "27", "offline_enabled": true, "options_page": "options.html", "icons": { "16": "images/icon16.png", "48": "images/icon48.png", "128": "images/icon128.png" }, "app": { "background": { "scripts": [ "scripts/background.js" ] } }, "permissions": [ "unlimitedStorage", "fullscreen", { "fileSystem": [ "write" ] }, "background", "<all_urls>", "tabs" ] } Does it need to be declared in "web_accessible_resources"? Any idea what's wrong? Update Adding to "web_accessible_resources" does not fix the issue. I added everything on that page too. update 2 It looks like it might be a Chrome bug for packaged apps. When I remove the "app" section in the manifest, it works! This is a bug since the Chrome app documentation states that apps can have options pages: https://developer.chrome.com/apps/options.html

  • Hidden Features of HTML

    - by Binoj Antony
HTML being the most widely used language (at least as a markup language) has not gotten its due credit. Considering that it has been around for so many years, things like the FORM / INPUT controls have still remained same with no new controls added. So at least from the existing features, do you know any that are not well known but very useful. Of course, this question is along the lines of: Hidden Features of JavaScript Hidden Features of CSS Hidden Features of C# Hidden Features of VB.NET Hidden Features of Java Hidden Features of ASP.NET Hidden Features of Python Hidden Features of TextPad Hidden Features of Eclipse Do not mention features of HTML 5.0, since it is in working draft Please specify one feature per answer.

  • Google Now is One Step Closer to Becoming Active in Google Chrome

    - by Akemi Iwaya
Many people have been eager to have Google Now working in their Chrome browsers and this week that dream got one step closer to reality. The first teasers that the new feature is becoming active have started to appear, so now is a good time to activate the switch for it and be ready for its arrival. You will need to be running the Dev Channel on your computer and enable the Google Now switch via Chrome Flags (chrome://flags/) if you have not already done so. The switch will be towards the bottom of the list. Once that is done restart your browser. After the browser has restarted you will see a notification window pop up as seen in the first screenshot above. Click Yes and a second small pop up message window will appear letting you know more about the freshly enabled feature. Unfortunately we were not able to catch a screenshot of the second message window before it disappeared.

That question has now been answered. The OMG! Chrome! Blog has put together a nice tutorial on how to get cross-browser extension compatibility set up and working with your browser of choice. • Manage Your Favorite Social Accounts in Chrome and Iron with Seesmic

    - by Asian Angel
Are you looking for a way to manage your Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz, LinkedIn, and Foursquare accounts all in one place? Using the Seesmic Web App for Chrome and Iron you can access your favorite accounts and manage them in a single, simple-to-use interface. A feature that we loved from the start was the ability to access Twitter without creating a special Seesmic account. And in these days of multiple accounts who needs another one to complicate things up? All that you need to do is to sign in with your user name/e-mail along with your password. You do have to authorize access for Seesmic to connect with your account but the whole process (login & authorization) is handled in a single window instance. Now on to a quick look at some of the UI features… The sidebar allows you to add additional columns to the main interface, set your favorite location for Trends, and tie in additional social services as desired. You can also access additional options and controls in the upper right corner. When you are ready to start tweeting click in the blank at the top and enter your text, etc. in the convenient drop-down window that appears. Another nice perk is the ability to switch to a black and grey theme if the white is too bright for your needs. • Chrome Web Store verification

    - by Vince V.
A couple of days ago I created an extension for Chrome and added it to the store. Now I want it to get verified. I payed the 5 dollar and added my website to Webmaster Tools. The website is also verified on those Webmaster Tools. Today I wanted to add my URL to my extension (ultimately to do online installations) but it doesn't recognize the URL I put in those Webmaster Tools. I tried refreshing and clicking add site, but it just doesn't work. Is there some step that I am missing or is this a bug in the Chrome Web Store, because I don't see any option left.

  • Where is the Flash in Chrome?

    - by Daniel
I installed Google Chrome. This is the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu. I went into firefox, and went to chrome.google.com, and hit the button. I don't like package managers, and avoid the command line like the pox. Then, I started using Google Chrome. I went to Kongregate, and clicked on a game. It told me I didn't have flash. A few different websites told me the same. I assumed that they must have been wrong. I hit the link to Adobe, to install Flash, and it reassured me; of course, Google Chrome includes Flash. I checked my version - Chrome 5.0.375.126. Of course, I just downloaded it. I scoured the internet for solutions. None worked. Many seemed to involve re-enabling Flash, or something like that. But insofar as I can tell, there is no Flash anywhere in my Chrome. I feel like I bought a Reese's cup, and found solid chocolate. I checked in the Chrome plugin manager, and everything. A few solutions told me to copy some garbage into my command line and hit enter (as almost all solutions to problems on linux entail). I did it, reluctantly, and it did nothing. I thought Flash was supposed to come with Chrome. But it didn't. Sooooo... What gives? Google Chrome version: Google Chrome 5.0.375.126 (Official Build 53802) WebKit 533.4 V8 2.1.10.15 User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.126 Safari/533.4 Command Line /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome Operating System: Ubuntu 10.4 64 bit.
