  • True Ubuntu on Chromebook ARM (samsung)

    - by Vincent beaurain
I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my desktop (runs like a charm). Then I used Crouton to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my chromebook samsung (ARM). It also works quite good. But here comes my question. Can we have a true Ubuntu (preferably 13.04) on my ARM chromebook? It seems that the Crouton/Ubuntu is not 100% the real thing. The best option would be to have the full Ubuntu 13.04 and remove the Chrome OS.

  • HP Chromebook 14 Crouton = Broken packages

    - by Robin Perry
I'm completely new and inept with ubuntu. I've recently purchased a chromebook 14 by Hewlett-Packard and today find out how to install Crouton for it. My goal is to be able to use steam on the chromebook for small time-killing games. My issue is that no matter what kind of application I attempt to install, it always tells me it has "broken dependencies" I also tried installing debian versions of "Firefox", "Chrome", "Opera" as well as "Cave Story+" from humble bundle. I've tried to do the sudo apt-get install -f as well as loads of other commands but nothing works What can I do, I can post any specs you need and am ready to use another way to get to steam such as ChrUbuntu if my issue is unfixable

  • Ubuntu full installation on Chromebook

    - by user193385
Guys I am quite new here :) I just bought a Google Chromebook HP 14 and I am very happy to be honest. But I do miss my Ubuntu OS :), and the options available to use aren't a real native OS system but adaptations that sometimes do not work :( Does anyone have an idea how to install with dual boot Ubuntu alongside Chrome OS. (I hope I am not repeating any questions here) Thank so much for your time guys :) Gustavo

  • Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

    - by user72727
I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.

  • How to Reinstall Ubuntu on Acer C7 Chromebook

    - by Daniel
I installed Chrbuntu 13.04 recently and it works great, however I was updating some programs when a pop-up appeared asking if i wanted to upgrade to the newest version. I didnt realize that it was still unstable and buggy. I am unsure on how to do this. Ive been told that i need to wipe the ubuntu partition completely but i dont see why that is neccesary. Basically i want to remove ubuntu 13.10 and use the partition it is installed on to install 13.04. Sorry for being a noob on linux but i hope you can help, And thanks for your time.

  • I cant get back into Ubuntu after turning off my Acer c710 Chromebook

    - by user286880
I took about 1 hour installing Ubuntu to my Acer chrome book. I turned off my computer and now it boots back into Chrome OS (yes i know its supposed to) Then i went onto the Chrome OS dev terminal thing and put in the code sudo cgpt -i 6 -p 5 -s 1 /dev/sda. Nothing happens it comes up with another Local Host slot. I tried using the Ctrl Alt f2 and ctrl alt f3 but nothing happened. I really need to get back onto Ubuntu. All help is appreciated.

  • How to boot Chromebook from SD card without entering developer mode?

    - by Caleb Strutz
I have a question. Is it at all possible to install Ubuntu or Chrubuntu onto a SD Card and then boot a chromebook from said SD card? I know this is easily possible, but the chromebook in question belongs to my school, so I cannot enter developer mode, because that would void the license agreement. I don't really care how technical or how many steps this will take, as long as it can be possible. Thanks in advance.

  • Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (on [Samsung] Chromebook)

    - by iphonedev7
I have dual booted Ubuntu Linux 12.04.1 LTS on my Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook, and am trying to run/install Oracle VirtualBox (from the generic .run file downloaded from their website). However, every time I try to run it (as root from the command line), it gives me the following error occurs: Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel. The current kernel version is 3.4.0 Problems were found which would prevent VirtualBox from installing. I have tried the version from the Software Center, as well as the command line installation, both of which gave me errors based on my linux-headers/linux-kernel/linux-[kernel]-image. Here's an error I keep getting (on the command line): First Installation: checking all kernels... • How can I read kindle book under xfce(ubuntu)? (using chromebook)(wine not working)

    - by yshn
I'm using chromebook, dual booting xfce(ubuntu) and cr os. The ebook I bought on amazon is not supported on kindle cloud reader. • How do I paste into the "crosh" terminal in a Chromebook?

    - by David Faux
I pressed Ctrl + Alt + t while having Chrome open to open a terminal in my Chromebook. How do I paste content into this terminal copied from another tab in Chrome? I have tried Ctrl + v to no avail. I have also tried highlighting text and pasting it via the middle button on my mouse, which failed too. I have also read this article (http://www.servercobra.com/nothing-but-chromebook-for-a-week/) and tried triple clicking my touch pad, but it isn't working for me.

  • Chromebook, Crouton & “External Drive” is it possible to rename the folder?

    - by Cyril N.
I have a Chromebook where I installed Crouton. I have plugged an SD Card and Chromebook detects it as "External Drive". In my Ubuntu instance, it's located at /media/removable/External Drive/ but this poses some problems for executing some applications I have installed on that external drive. In order to fix the problem, I need to remove all the spaces in the path, which is located in "External Drive". My question is simple, is it possible to move/rename the mount name "External Drive" to something else and doing it automatically at every mount/boot ? Thank you for your help !

  • Which is better for running Ubuntu and other Linux OSes, Chromebook or Windows, why? [on hold]

    - by Serge
I'm learning programming and I would like to switch to a Linux OS, perhaps Ubuntu, to continue this, but the current machine is generally getting pretty old and slow and Windows is the least favorite option for production, and I can manage getting something new right around the price range of the nicest Chromebook on the market right now. However, I have compared specs of HP Chromebook 14 with those of regular PC laptops that roughly cost the same, and the latter consistently have approximately the same and sometimes higher (like the processor speed) specs. Yet usage of Chromebooks for this purpose is pretty widespread nowadays. Is this because they were initially built for a Linux OS - and is it really THAT crucial - or are there other major factors at play here?

  • How is a Chromebook better than using Chrome browser on another OS?

    - by bigpopakap
I'm looking into getting a Chromebook as a lightweight device to use for basic functions. I'm fully aware of some of the limitations like no native apps, limited functionality while offline (though this is getting better with Google Drive's offline capabilities). Currently, I have a Windows machine on which I've installed Google Drive, so files in that folder are synced. And I use Chrome as my browser. So I have access to all the same apps (Drive, Calendar, Gmail, Google Music, etc.). Is there any advantage to having a Chromebook over my current setup, other than the speed of the lightweight Chrome OS?

  • Sound in Ubuntu 12.10 on Chromebook

    - by Paul Mennega
I've got an HP Chromebook 14 that I've rooted and installed Ubuntu via Crouton (upgraded to 12.10) and most things are working nicely. One issue that I am having trouble solving relates to sound. I've got sound output that I can control via the individual app (e.g. Youtube), but when trying to control the volume via the built-in xfce4-mixer, I get the following error: GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem. Opening a terminal, I can run the alsamixer and control the volume levels. It is reporting back that the card is CRAS. I'd love to be able to do it from XFCE and the built-in mixer. I've tried re-installing the GStreamer packages, but no luck. It seems like I am close but not sure where to go from here. On a maybe unrelated note, plugging headphones into the headphone jack in Ubuntu also does not stop the sound from coming from the speakers and nothing comes through the headphones. Switching back to ChromeOs, everything works as expected, so I think that it's a driver issue.

  • Are Chromebooks the New Netbooks, and What Does That Mean?

    - by Chris Hoffman
Netbooks — small, cheap, slow laptops — were once very popular. They fell out of favor — people bought them because they seemed cheap and portable, but the actual experience was lackluster. Most netbooks now sit unused. Windows netbooks have vanished from stores today, but there’s a new super-cheap laptop — the Chromebook. Chromebook sales numbers are impressive, but their usage statistics tell a different story. Are Chromebooks just the new netbook? The Problem With Netbooks Netbooks seemed appealing, especially in an age before tablets and lightweight ultrabooks. You could buy a netbook for $200 or so and have a portable device that let you get on the Internet. The name “netbook” spelled that out — it was a portable device for getting on the ‘net. They weren’t really that great. The original netbook was a lightweight Asus Eee PC that ran Linux alone and had a small amount of fast flash storage. Netbooks eventually ran heavier Windows XP operating systems — Windows Vista was out, but it was just too bloated to run on netbooks. Manufacturers added slow magnetic hard drives, bloatware, and even DVD drives! They couldn’t run most Windows software very well. The build quality was poor and their keyboards were tiny and cramped. People liked the idea of a lightweight device that let them get on the Internet and loved the cheap price, but the actual experience wasn’t great. Chromebook Sales Chromebook sales numbers seem surprisingly high. NPD reported that Chromebooks were 21% of all notebooks sold in the US in 2013. If you combine laptop and tablet sales into a single statistic, Chromebooks were 9.6% of all those devices sold. That’s 2/3 as many Chromebooks sold as iPads in the US! Of Amazon’s best-selling laptop computers, two of the top three are Chromebooks. These definitely look like successful products. Unlike netbooks, Chromebooks are taking off in a big way in the education market. Many schools are buying Chromebooks for their students instead of more expensive Windows laptops. They’re easier to manage and lock down than Windows laptops, but — more importantly for cash-strapped schools — they’re very cheap. Netbooks never had this sort of momentum in schools. Chromebook Usage Statistics Here’s where the rosy picture of Chromebooks starts to become more realistic. StatCounter’s browser usage statistics show how widely used different operating systems are. For example, Windows 7 has the highest share with 35.71% of web activity in April, 2014. The chart doesn’t even show Chrome OS at all, although there is an “Other” number near the bottom. Click the Download Data link to download a CSV file and we can view more detailed information. Chrome OS only accounted for 0.38% of web usage in April, 2014. Desktop Linux, which people often shrug at, accounted for 1.52% in the same month. To its credit, Chrome OS usage has increased. Chromebooks were widely mocked back in November, 2013 when the sales numbers came out. After all, they only accounted for 0.11% of web usage globally in November, 2013! But Chrome OS numbers have been improving: Nov, 2013: 0.11% Dec, 2013: 0.22% Jan, 2014: 0.31% Feb, 2014: 0.35% Mar, 2014: 0.36% Apr, 2014: 0.38% Chrome OS is climbing, but it’s definitely still in the “Other” category. It isn’t as high as we’d expect to see it with those types of sales numbers. Chromebooks vs. Netbooks Chromebooks are more limited devices than traditional PCs. You can do quite a few things, but you have to do it all using Chrome or Chrome apps. Most people won’t be enabling developer mode and installing a Linux desktop. You don’t have access to the powerful desktop software available for Windows and even Mac OS X. On the other hand, these Chromebooks are less compromised than netbooks in many ways. They come with a lightweight operating system designed for portable, mobile devices. They don’t come packed with any bloatware, like the bloatware you’ll find on competing Windows PCs and the original netbooks. They’re cheaper because the manufacturer doesn’t have to pay for a Windows license. There’s no need for antivirus software weighing the operating system down. They’re larger than the original netbooks, with many of them being 11.6-inches instead of the original 8-inch bodies many older netbooks came with. They have larger, more comfortable keyboards and fast solid-state storage. Really, Chromebooks are what netbooks wanted to be. People didn’t buy netbooks to use typical Windows software — they just wanted a lightweight PC. Of course, for many people, the real successor to netbooks is tablets. If all you want is a portable device to throw in a bag so you can get online, maybe a tablet is better. Where Does This Leave Chromebooks? So, are Chromebooks the new netbooks? It’s a bit early to answer that question. Chromebooks are definitely not out of the competition — their sales look good and their usage share is increasing. On the other hand, Chrome OS is still pretty far behind. They’re not catching fire like tablets did. Maybe netbooks were just before their time and Chromebooks were what they were always meant to be. Just as Microsoft’s Windows XP tablets failed, Windows XP netbooks also failed. Tablets took off with a more refined operating system on better hardware years later. “Netbooks” — or Chromebooks — are now taking off with a more purpose-built operating system on better hardware, too. It’s hard to count Chromebooks out because they provide a much better experience than netbooks ever did. If you’re one of the people who wants to use old Windows desktop apps on your portable laptop, you may think netbooks were better — but most people don’t want that. But maybe people either want a full desktop PC experience or a full mobile tablet experience. Is there a place for a laptop with a keyboard that can only view websites? We’ll have to wait and see. If I can run low graphics mode as an alternative then how would I go about that? If I can not then what would be a good unity like alternative for Ubuntu 14.04?

  • Install full version of Unity on Chrome OS using crouton

    - by Sam Kong
I have an Acer Chromebook. Using crouton, I installed Ubuntu (unity) on it. I am pretty familiar Ubuntu 12.04. But the installed one is very minimized package. My fonts are missing and I manually installed language pack for Korean but still browser can't display Korean characters. Is there a way to install the whole packages via crouton like when you install Ubuntu 12.04 with the CD? Or is there a script that installs the missing packages on the bare Ubuntu? Thanks. Sam

  • Can I Store MediaWiki Files on the cloud?

    - by user219048
I recently got a chromebook, and I've been brainstorming different ways to put mediawiki on it (with localhost, not a server). One way I've read about online is to go into developer mode to download and set up LAMP. I was wondering, wouldn't I be able to store the apache, mysql, php, and mediawiki files on the cloud (google drive)? And if so, would anything prevent me from accessing my wiki on any other computer's localhost, assuming I could just log into Google Drive to access these files? Might there be any reduced performance when operating from the cloud?

  • Cloud9 + vmware server

    - by Vigrond
I recently bought a Chromebook to allow me to travel and work easily. My work likes to use VMWare images for our environments. I would like to run these on a server somewhere and hook them up to Cloud9 IDE so I can program fairly easily with my Chromebook What would be the easiest way to set this environment up? Can you say, take a VMWare image, "run" it on a linux server and hook up secure access to it through a given port?

  • building kernel headers (v3.4) breaks wifi (in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)

    - by iphonedev7
I have dual-booted by Samsung Series 5 Chromebook into Ubuntu using Jay Lee's script/instructions, and then installed the ~500 updates that appear thereafter. Now, I am trying to build my kernel headers in an attempt to enable virtualization so that I can run VirtualBox (I have a VM image on a flashdrive). I followed the instructions here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chromebook-central/PPQFpC7mYzk mainly doing as olofj suggests in his answer, while also making sure to abide by additions/edits made by panZ and algp. However, now that I have done so, my wifi has stopped working, and when I click on the network icon in the top bar, in place of wifi networks there is a grayed-out message that says "no network devices available". I have an Atheros AR9300 Ethernet card (I think thats what you call it). Any help is much needed and appreciated. Any further details necessary to answer the question will be provided as necessary. Thanks!
