• Sporadic disk clicking sound

  Hi, I'm having some unusual and sporadic hard disk clicking issues. Here is a cronological description of the facts. I'm using an ASUS P6T-SE with Intel Core i7, 6Gb RAM 600W Power supply and ATI4670 graphics, running Ubuntu 10.10. About one month ago my hard disk (SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200 rpm) started making a clicking sound: a sort of loud tic-tac, every second or so, when involved in disk activity. The system was clearly slower than before at disk access, but it was functional and I could not find any signal of trouble on the linux logs. I disconnected the disk and tried an older SATA drive I had around: no problem with it. Then I reconnected the Seagate disk, and the problem was mysteriously gone. Ubuntu booted normally, usual speed, no clicking. A couple of weeks later, the problem reappeared. I tried disconnecting reconnecting (as it somehow solved the problem before) without luck. So, despite it was a rather new drive, I assumed it was a hardware issue, made backups and bought a new drive. The new drive is a SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Tb 7200 rpm. I installed both drives at the same time, with the intention of transferring my files from on to the other. To my surprise, when I booted the computer with both drives, both started making the clicking sound !! Even worse, I removed the old drive, leaving the unformated new drive connected, and booted from a LiveCD. It kept clicking ! Puzzled by this, I tried both drives on my laptop with a SATA to USB cable. At the moment I connected any of them, they made one or two unusual clicks and immediately stopped doing that and worked normally. The old drive I thought almost dead, was working like a charm as if nothing happened. Then I thought: "ok, it must be the motherboard. Let's try again". So, I reconnected the old drive to the ASUS P6T motherboard (the same cables and SATA port as before), and it worked as if nothing happened ! The problem was gone again. The new 1.5 Tb drive was also working ok: No clicking nor slowdown. So I left the old 1Tb disk connected and kept using the computer daily during 3 weeks, until today it happened again. Now I don't really know what to do or check. I'm not even sure if it is a hardware issue any more ! This is rather annoying as it seems it happens with a period of 2 or 3 weeks and I have no means of forcing it to happen. Does anyone have a clue of what can causes this behaviour or have any suggestions of things I should check when it happens again ? What I did today is checking some SMART parameters Error log: smartctl -l error /dev/sda. No errors Short selftest: smartctl -t short /dev/sda. • Semi-random clicking sound from Macbook Pro

  There is an occasional click sound coming from my Macbook Pro (17", 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo) I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently, but the computer was also in for service about week before that, so I can't be certain the OS upgrade is related. The sound has no set interval and frequency varies from rare to every few seconds. I can alleviate the sound by turning up the fan speed with smcFanControl. Turning the right fan up about half way seems to be sufficient. Unfortunately, turning up the left fan also causes the right to turn on, because the sound seems to be slightly more to the left. The cause seems to be either a fan or heat-related.

• Clicking on MenuItem without clicking on the text

  I've got a Menu, and I want to click on the menu, but not on the text if you guys know what i mean. The MenuItem has a border, or something like this, but when I click on it it won't redirect to the page I want unless I click on text. Is it possible to click on the whole "Button" and redirect or do what is need to do? • Hard drive clicking noise on Acer AO722

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on an Acer Aspire One 722. Whenever I'm on battery power I get a clicking sound from my hard drive every 5 seconds or so (this does not happen when the laptop is plugged in). I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and I don't get the clicking sound in Windows. The clicking sound stops when I run the command:sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda Also, according to:sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda my hard drive is healthy. Is this clicking sound something I can just ignore? Or is it a serious problem and will it eventually damage my computer? If so, how would I fix it? I have tried adding hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda to my /etc/rc.local file, but I still run into the clicking problem if my computer boots while plugged in and is then unplugged. Also, I'm finding this fix to be unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Is this a good solution and is there a better way of doing this? Also, would running my laptop with a -B value of 254 have any negative effects? (I read somewhere about a lower level protecting the hard drive from bumps)

The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

• Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? • Css clicking problem [migrated]

  I'm building a strange div shaped structure and I need a hint to resolve a clicking problem. This is a jsfiddle to show you the issue. The structure for each element is: <div class="views-row"> <div class="diamonds-container"> CONTENT </div> </div> I have a onclick() event on .diamonds-container but the .views-row div of the next element [with red or blue background..] go over the container and stop the click event on it. I tryed to play with the z-index but I didn't have the expected result. How can I achieve this structure with a correct click event on diamonds-containers ? I think I can track the .views-row click with javascript and trigger manually a click on the previous diamonds-container but this will be my final option. How can I achieve this without javascript?

• Clicking far away in vim in tmux in urxvt

  I use vim inside tmux inside urxvt, and the mouse works perfectly well for clicking and selecting text, except when I want to click too far to the right. It seems to be related to the distance in number of columns from the left. When I go beyond column ~200 (not sure about the exact number), clicking simply does nothing. Note that it's not related to a vim window: with two vim windows taking ~150 columns each, clicking will not work after the ~50th column in the second window. It's related to the whole vim session. Also note that clicking far away in a big tmux pane (200 columns) works perfectly. In my .tmux.conf I have this line: set -g default-terminal "screen-256color" and in my .vimrc I have this: if &term =~ "^screen" autocmd VimEnter * silent !echo -ne "\033Ptmux;\033\033]12;7\007\033\\" let &t_SI = "\<Esc>Ptmux;\<Esc>\<Esc>]12;5\x7\<Esc>\\" let &t_EI = "\<Esc>Ptmux;\<Esc>\<Esc>]12;7\x7\<Esc>\\" autocmd VimLeave * silent !echo -ne "\033Ptmux;\033\033]12;14\007\033\\" end It changes the cursor's color depending on the editing mode of vim, and it works, meaning that tmux really sets $TERM to "screen-256color" — but I don't know if this has any relevance with my mouse problem. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, vim 7.3, tmux 1.6 and rxvt-unicode 9.14. Does anybody have an idea about what is causing this problem? Thanks.

• 2D map/plane with nodes overlayed that supports panning, scaling and clicking on nodes

  I'm trying my hand at Android development and seem to be running into an invisible ceiling in trying to get what I want accomplished. Basically I'm trying to create an app that renders a 2D surface map that I can (pinch) zoom and pan. I'll have to place nodes on the surface of the map that will scale/zoom and pan in relation to the surface. I started out with a 2D ImageView approach and got as far as pinch zoom, pan and laying nodes as relative ImageViews, but all the methods I tried to get X,Y,W,H for the 2D surface were always off for some reason. Additionally, I was never able to scale the node ImageViews correctly, and as a result never got far enough to try and work out their X,Y scaled offset. So I decided to get back to 3D rendering. Conceptually pan/zoom is camera manipulation, so I don't have to mess with how to scale the 2D map or the nodes. But I need a starting point or sample to get me going that's close to what I'm trying to achieve. A sample on a translucent spinning cube isn't helping as much as I need it to. Any tips? Links, insults and sympathy are all welcome!

• Clicking Pidgin message in Ubuntu 13.10 indicator menu doesn't focus on message

  When I get a message on Pidgin, if I click the notification in the indicator panel, it doesn't bring the message into focus. It highlights that the message has been opened in the Unity dock, but I have to click the dock icon or alt-tab to the window to read the message. Does anyone know a fix so I can view the messages from the indicator notification? (Note: this actually works in 12.04, so I'm assuming it's a bug in the later version). Any help greatly appreciated :)

• 12.04 Ambiance dark side bar issue when clicking folder on desktop

  Concerning an updated custom ambiance theme: why is there no dark side bar when I click on a folder, like the home folder icon on the desktop, but the theme works as planned when I type nautilus in the terminal to open the home folder or when opening a folder up as root? Permissions issue perhaps? Note: I am using Cinnamon instead of Unity and I noticed it uses the Nemo file manager instead of Nautilus and I suspected that it was causing me the grief. I uninstalled it and now am using Nautilus only as the file manager. I found this out when I typed: sudo killall nemo and the problem went away. I'll see how this goes (and hopefully cinnamon doesn't care about it...) Has anyone else had any issues with this?

• Ubuntu 11.10 logs off when clicking shutdown

  As the title says: when I click Shutdown from the menu it logs off. When I click shutdown from the log-in menu it does nothing. I'm using a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. I can force it to shutdown by the command below, but I don't want to keep typing that whenever I want to shutdown my laptop. sudo shutdown -h now So it's probably processes which arn't closing. I'm a novice linux user, so I have no idea how to rule out the software causing this. I think it's either Gwibber/Empathy, perhaps Mozilla Thunderbird, because this is happening since I started using this. So a few questions: How do I rule out what software is causing this? How do I stop it from not closing on shutdown? If 1. and 2. don't work is it possible to add top command to the shutdown process? Edit: Rourke here. Somehow I cannot accept the below comment from mech-e as the solution. Thank you this was indeed the answer I was looking for!

• 12.04 tablet cursor jumps around when clicking

  After updating to 12.04 i had to re-install wizardpen-driver (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TabletSetupWizardpen) to use my Trust tablet. But now when I change the Coordinate Transformation Matrix to anything else but the identity matrix, moving the pen moves the cursor normally, but when I click (or press with the pen) the cursor jumps to the edge of the screen, seemingly depending on how I edit the matrix. I know the tablet isn't broken since this behaviour doesn't occur if I leave the matrix as an identity matrix, and the tablet works perfectly on Windows. -L

• Clicking on clues and other objects in a 2D cluedo like game

  I'm a java/android programmer, but I don't have any experience in game programming, I'm already reading proper books, like "Pro Android Games", but my concerns are more about the ideas behind game programming than the techniques themselves. I'm working on a 2D game, something like Cluedo to let you understand the genre. I would like to know how should I act with the "scenes", for example, a room with a desk, TV, windows and a lamp. I need to make some items tappable and others not. Is it common to use one image (invisible to the user) with every different item a different color, then call the getColor() method on the image? Or use one image as background, and separate images for all the items? If the latter, how can I set the positioning? and should I use imageView or imageButton? I'm sorry if those are really low quality questions, but as "outsider" ( I'm 23 and still finishing my university ) it's pretty hard learn alone.

• Clicking links in pdfs opened with Okular opens Abiword (instead of the default browser)

  I work with Xubuntu 12.04 and use Okular (version 0.14.3) to view pdf files. If I click a link in a pdf file (created with pdflatex using the hyperref package), Abiword is opened instead of my default browser google-chrome. How can I change this behavior? The settings in Okular do not seem to provide a solution. (Note that I set google-chrome as the preferred application for web browsing under Settings - Preferred Applications, so that's not the problem).

• HTML5 clicking objects in canvas

  I have a function in my JS that gets the user's mouse click on the canvas. Now lets say I have a random shape on my canvas (really its a PNG image which is rectangular) but i don't want to include any alpha space. My issue lies with lets say i click some where and it involves a pixel of one of the images. The first issue is how do you work out the pixel location is an object on the map (and not the grass tiles behind). Secondly if i clicked said image, if each image contains its own unique information how do you process the click to load the correct data. Note I don't use libraries I personally prefer the raw method. Relying on libraries doesn't teach me much I find.

• Clicking on active apps on unity launcher stopped working

  I don't know how it suddenly became this but here's what's happening right now: e.g. I have 2 firefox windows open, so I see 2 small arrows on the left side icon of the unity launcher. Before, when I click on the firefox icon, I see 2 small windows of the firefox so I can choose which one. Now it suddenly stopped working. (super+W still works though). The bug on my system applies to all progams with multiple window instances like nautilus, terminal, etc. Please help, I don't know what to do. I also have cairo dock, compiz, myunity installed in my 12.04. I tried searching online to no avail.

• Mouse not clicking properly

  Okay guys, here's a tricky one. I'm running 10.10 on my pc but i've had this issue for some time now.I'm having strange issues with the mouse. What happens is when I get into Ubuntu, I can click anything, but as soon as I click something to open a window, run a program, I can no longer click anything EXCEPT the last thing I clicked. When I right click the last thing I clicked, it allows me to click everything normally, but only until I open something new. So for example I'll click the email icon on docky to open up my email client, which opens but is unresponsive until I right click docky. Then if I open an attatchment, I must also right click the MENU bar on my email client. Sometimes it also works if I simply right click on the newly opened window. I have tried this mith mutiple mice and still the same issue.

• xfce4 - 'Run Program' dialogue box does not appear when double clicking script

  Ubuntu 12.04 Xfce4 On my previous Ubuntu distro, when I double clicked scripts I got a little dialogue window that asked me if I wanted to run the script as a program or run it in terminal. Similar to this window: Since upgrading, I have never seen that window. I have ensured that the option to 'Allow executing as a program is enabled' and the script works if I run it through terminal. I simply just don't get the prompt. Any ideas?

• External hard-drive is "clicking" when idle [closed]

  I'm struggling with a very annoying issue: My new hard-drive (Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB (HN-M101MBB) was build in an USB 3.0 external case (Lian Li EX-10QR) and formatted with ext4. When this hard-drive is connected to my Notebook via USB 2.0 it "klicks", the LED flashs too, every second, but only when it's idle! It stays silent, when something is copying or reading from it. But when this drive was formatted with ext3 or fat, it always remained silent. This also happens with a Western Digital WD10JPVT Scorpio Blue, but the "klicks" are even louder! System: 12.04 64-bit with Gnome-Shell. Any ideas how to approach this issue?

• Script/ Macro in Excel, by clicking on a cell

  There's something I want to do in Excel 2010. Specifically, I want to be able to make the open sheet load data from a text file, by clicking -important- on a cell of the current open worksheet. So my specific needs are: If it is possible in some way, to start a macro/script by clicking on a cell. About the script/macro: What would be the preferable, by your opinion, way of implementation. And more specifically, how to automatically import the data needed, only by clicking, without having to continually specify the desirable .txt file each time, only 1 time at max, at start or by using a custom "initalization/configuration" file.
