  LMDE can see my wireless card, and correctly identifies it, but it refuses to let me turn it on through the shiny graphical interface. • cd ~ dumps me in a seemingly empty directory

  This is on a Linux mint box. I'm told everywhere to use the command cd ~ To switch to the root directory before doing some command line magic.
