• negative precision values in ostream

  This is more of a question of curiosity but does anyone know how negative precision values are handled in C++? For example: double pi = 3.14159265; cout.precision(-10); cout.setf(ios::fixed, ios::floatfield); cout << pi << endl; I've tried this out and using GCC and it seems that the precision value is ignored but I was curious if there is some official line on what happens in this situation.

  Is there a generic IP device name for windows similar to "eth0" used by Linux and Solaris? I am attempting to monitor SCTP traffic, which appears to be successful passing the ip address, but this means for every machine to use this application would changing to use the host address. Thanks

• Trying to Install Rails 3

  I'm trying to install Rails 3 on a brand new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3, Ruby 1.8.7, and Rails 2.3.5 and I'm wondering if I've hosed myself. So far, I've run these commands: $ gem update --system $ gem install arel tzinfo builder memcache-client rack rack-test rack-mount erubis mail text-format thor bundler i18n $ gem install rails --pre However, when I run the last command, I get this error: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError) You don't have write permissions into the /usr/bin directory. I think it wants me to run the command with sudo so that it can write over /usr/bin/rails. But if I do that, won't I be overwriting my Rails 2.3.5 executable? I don't want to do that. Instead, I'd like to keep both versions of Rails. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to get Gallio running some existing NUnit tests but they're not showing in Gallio. The assembly loads into Gallio fine and I can run them fine via Resharper within the VS IDE. I created a really simple NUnit test in VS and this also doesn't show so I know it's not something weird in my existing tests. Any ideas?

  Hi, Is there a way to provide AutoMapper with just a source and based on the specified mapping for the type of that source automatically determine what to map to?   Ive heard a lot about Daz studio, Poser, Maya, K-3d, Anim8or, Blender, and all the rest. My question is which one is the best choice in terms of simplicity and quality. price is not an issue really. I'm programming games in java for android mobile devices at the moment but i will eventually move onto larger platforms. I would like to utilize unity3d for the game programming itself and utilize a 3d modeling software just to create the game objects. I just need to know the best one to get started with from scratch or should i use a combination of multiple ones? Any insight for this would be great, thanks!

• How to change sample text in font installer

  I have several Japanese fonts but do not want to install them all. I would like to preview them before installing. In icon view I can get a very rough idea of the style of the font as it shows Aa. When I open the font I am presented with a dialog box which shows a sample of the font with the sentence The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. I would like to change this sample text to Japanese text to get a fuller preview of the font. Is it at all possible? I suspect I might have to edit and compile source, not something I'm very familiar with.

  I have a 3D scene, and a player that can move about in it. In a time-step the player can move from point A to point B. The player should follow the terrain height but slow going up cliffs and then fall back, or stop when jumping and hitting a wall and so on. In my first prototype I determine the Y at the player's centre's X,Z by intersecting a ray with every triangle in the scene. I am not checking their path, but rather just sampling their end-point for each tick. Despite this being Javascript, it works acceptably performance-wise. However, because I am modeling the player as a single point, the player can position themselves so that they are half-in a cliff face and so on. I need to model them as as a solid e.g. some cluster of spheres or a even their fuller mesh. I am also concerned that if they were moving faster they might miss the test altogether. How should I solve this?

  I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error I used sfc /scannow Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved. But I have a process (windows service) that uses a skeleton xml template file to produce a fuller version of that file after processesing. What about the idea of including that 'skeleton xml' in the app config file? I am trying to aviod having a standalone xml skeleton file, since it is 'configuration' related, in a way.

  When attempting to run the BizTalk Server Pipeline Component Wizard for the first time I encountered an error that prevented the creation of the pipeline component project: System.ArgumentException : Value does not fall withing the expected range  I found the solution for this error in a couple of places, first a reference to the issue on the Codeplex Project and then a fuller description on a blog referring to the BizTalk 2006 implementation.   This is definitely subjective, but I'd like to try to avoid it becoming argumentative. I think it could be an interesting question if people treat it appropriately. The idea for this question came from the comment thread from my answer to the "What are five things you hate about your favorite language?" question. I contended that classes in C# should be sealed by default - I won't put my reasoning in the question, but I might write a fuller explanation as an answer to this question. I was surprised at the heat of the discussion in the comments (25 comments currently). So, what contentious opinions do you hold? I'd rather avoid the kind of thing which ends up being pretty religious with relatively little basis (e.g. brace placing) but examples might include things like "unit testing isn't actually terribly helpful" or "public fields are okay really". The important thing (to me, anyway) is that you've got reasons behind your opinions. Please present your opinion and reasoning - I would encourage people to vote for opinions which are well-argued and interesting, whether or not you happen to agree with them.

• Make IP Address point to webroot instead of virtual hosts' documentroot

  I used to have a one-to-one domain name and IP. Recently I've paid for a second domain name and decided to host it on the same box and IP. As such, I added virtualhosts to point each domain name to a different document root (i.e. /var/www/webbie1 and /var/www/webbie2). The question I have is, can I still make the IP, e.g. http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, point to the webroot, i.e. /var/www/? If so, how do I go about doing it? For a fuller picture, the box is on an Ubuntu server OS and I'm using apache2 as the app server. the changes I made to enable to virtual hosts were in the apache2.conf file with the <VirtualHost [IP address]> ... </VirtualHost> tags. • Oracle Developer Day, Poland, 2012

  Oracle Developer Day took place in Poland today. Oracle's Gregor Rayman did the keynote, where NetBeans was positioned, yet again, as Oracle's IDE for the Java Platform, via the JavaFX Roadmap: Well, it's not so clear from my pic above, but NetBeans is closely tied to the JavaFX Roadmap, as well as the JDK Roadmap too. Then the tracks started, one of which was the Java Track (the other two tracks were on ADF/WebLogic and SOA/BPM/BAM), where among other things I demonstrated the Java EE 6 Platform via tools in NetBeans IDE at some length. The room could hardly have been fuller, chairs had to be brought in and people were standing along the walls. The above pic shows the session being set up, with the room full of developers ready to hear about Java EE 6. I also did a session on pluggable Java desktop development (i.e., NetBeans Platform) and on "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.1?", while Martin Grebac had a session on Java EE Web Services. Some of the many questions asked during the day that I thought were interesting: Is there localization support for the @Pattern annotation? I.e., what if I want to display the error message in Polish, what do I do? Is there filtering/sorting support for the DataTable component in JSF? Why is there no visual editor for ejb-jar.xml, in the same way that there is for web.xml? "Would be handy if there were to be a JSR for IDE Keyboard Shortcuts." (Two different people asked this question, separately, without knowing about each other. The second didn't know about the Eclipse and IntelliJ keyboard shortcut support in NetBeans IDE and was happy when I told them about it.) Wouldn't it be cool if, on start up, or during installation, there'd be a question: "Are you migrating from Eclipse/IntelliJ?" Then, if "yes", reset the keyboard shortcuts to match the IDE they're coming from.Is there a way in NetBeans to find subclasses of a class? "Would be cool if HTML or JSF files could be visualized in the same way as JavaFX and Swing classes." I.e., Visual Debugger for web developers. I had a great day and am looking at the Oracle Developer Day that will be held in Cluj, Romania, on Friday.

Here is the full abstract : TSQL and internals - When faced with performance issues there are many lines of attack. Tuning the engine itself can get you so far, however for maximum effect you need to understand how the engine and how it translates SQL statements into performable actions. This is not a simple task, it is a massive task to deal with a multi-table join and the number of permutations can be immense. To back up this knowledge, we can create better performing TSQL and understand the impact that is has upon the engine and recognize the pitfalls and gotcha’s that exist in SQLServer. Ultimately, there is no ‘best way’ to perform a single task only many variations of ‘it depends’ , but now we can pick the most appropriate option for the required dataload. Over the years, there have been many myths and misconceptions have grown around the product, some have basis in older versions and some are just wrong. Continuing to build on the knowledge given so far these issue will be explored and broken down and proved or disproved. Finally we will look to the future and explore SQL Server 2012 and the new functionality that that brings and some of the common uses that we will be able to address. After completion of this days pre-con, attendees will have a more complete knowledge of execution plans, and how they relate to the physical and logical actions that SQLServer will be executing on their behalf. The attendees will also have a more rounded and fuller knowledge of TSQL and the implications of incorrectly defining a query. • Challenge 19 – An Explanation of a Query

  I have received a number of requests for an explanation of my winning query of TSQL Challenge 19. This involved traversing a hierarchy of employees and rolling a count of orders from subordinates up to superiors. The first concept I shall address is the hierarchyId , which is constructed within the CTE called cteTree.   cteTree is a recursive cte that will expand the parent-child hierarchy of the personnel in the table @emp.  One useful feature with a recursive cte is that data can be ‘passed’ from the parent to the child data.  The hierarchyId column is similar to the hierarchyId data type that was introduced in SQL Server 2008 and represents the position of the person within the organisation. Let us start with a simplistic example Albert manages Bob and Eddie.  Bob manages Carl and Dave. The hierarchyId will represent each person’s position in this relationship in a single field.  In this simple example we could append the userID together into a varchar field as detailed below. This will enable us to select a branch of the tree by filtering using Where hierarchyId  ‘1,2%’ to select Bob and all his subordinates.  Naturally, this is not comprehensive enough to provide a full solution, but as opposed to concatenating the Id’s together into a varchar datatyped column, we can apply the same theory to a varbinary.  By CASTing the ID’s into a datatype of varbinary(4) ,4 is used as 4 bytes of data are used to store an integer and building a hierarchyId  from those.  For example: The important point to bear in mind for later in the query is that the binary data generated is 'byte order comparable'. ie We can ORDER a dataset with it and the resulting data, will be in the order required. Now, would probably be a good time to download the example file and, after the cte ‘cteTree’, uncomment the line ‘select * from cteTree’.  Mark this and all prior code and execute.  This will show you how this theory directly relates to the actual challenge data.  The only deviation from the above, is that instead of using the ID of an employee, I have used the row_number() ranking function to order each level by LastName,Firstname.  This enables me to order by the HierarchyId in the final result set so that the result set is in the required order. Your output should be something like the below.  Notice also the ‘Level’ Column that contains the depth that the employee is within the tree.  I would encourage you to ‘play’ with the query, change the order in the row_number() or the length of the cast in the hierarchyId to see how that effects the outcome.  The next cte, ‘cteTreeWithOrderCount’, is a join between cteTree and the @ord table, and COUNT’s the number of orders per employee.  A LEFT JOIN is employed here to account for the occasion where an employee has made no sales.   Executing a ‘Select * from cteTreeWithOrderCount’ will return the result set as below.  The order here is unimportant as this is only a staging point of the data and only the final result set in a cte chain needs an Order by clause, unless TOP is utilised. cteExplode joins the above result set to the tally table (Nums) for Level Occurances.  So, if level is 2 then 2 rows are required.  This is done to expand the dataset, to create a new column (PathInc), which is the (n+1) integers contained within the heirarchyid.  For example, with the data for Robert King as given above, the below 3 rows will be returned. From this you can see that the pathinc column now contains the values for Andrew Fuller and Steven Buchanan who are Robert King’s superiors within the tree.    Finally cteSumUp, sums the orders for each person and their subordinates using the PathInc generated above, and the final select does the final simple mathematics and filters to restrict the result set to only the ‘original’ row per employee.
