  • encode divx into mpg4 (iphone compatible)

    is there a way to encode (?) a divx file into an mpg4 file or something that will play on the iphone, but while the divx is downloading/streaming. And if possible is it possible to encode on the fly so the divx file gets encoded into an iphone compatible format and then streamed to a iphone with like a 2 minute or so delay, all while the divx file is still downloading.

    Is there a way to encode a DivX file into an iPhone-compatible video file while the DivX is downloading/streaming? Further, is it possible to re-stream the resulting iPhone-compatible video to the iPhone with a minimal (say, 2 minute or so) delay? I've seen other questions about encoding iPhone-compatible videos but they don't quite address the streaming video source and potential of streaming output that I'm interested in.

  • Good DVD ripper - for Divx

    I'm currently going through my DVD collection, and digitising it, to allow me to watch it on a media streamer (I'm NOT a filesharer!!) I want to know what software i should use, to convert my DVD's to AVI divx format. I currently use Xilisoft DVD ripper, however this creates a "letterbox" at the top and bottom of the file - and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn this off. I'm a novice at video encoding, so would need something fairly simple / well documented.

    I recently installed to the latest version of DivX and suddenly found my C drive filling up with the cache files. I tracked it down to: C:\Files\My Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files My old laptop (running WinXP) only has a small hard drive and any DivX cache files fills it up so I want it to use my D drive where I have a little more room. The trouble is I can't see anywhere in the DivX preferences where I can change the cache location. Can anyone tell me how I can change the location of the DivX cache files?

  • Compress Large Video Files with DivX / Xvid and AutoGK

    Have you ever recorded home video on a camcorder only to find the video size is enormous? What if you wanted to share a video clip on YouTube or another video sharing site, but the file size was bigger than the maximum upload size? Today we’ll look at a way to compress certain video files, such as MPEG and AVI, with Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK). AutoGK is a free application that runs on Windows. It supports Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Transport Streams, Vobs, and virtually any codec used for an .AVI file. AutoGK will accept as input the following file types: MPG, MPEG, VOB, VRO, M2V, DAT, IFO, TS, TP, TRP, M2T, and AVI. Files are output as .AVI files and are converted using the DivX or XviD codecs. Installing and Using AutoGK Download and install AutoGK (link below) Open the AutoGK. You’ll need to navigate a few wizard screens, but you can just accept the defaults.   Choose your video file by clicking on the folder to the right of the Input file text box.   Browse for and select your video file and click “Open.”   For this example, we’ll be working with an .AVI file that’s 167MB in size.   The output file is copied into the same directory as the input file by default, but you can change this if you choose. If the input file is also .AVI, AutoGK will append an _agk to the output file so that the original is not overwritten. Next, you’ll see any audio tracks listed. You can unselect the check box if you’d like to remove the audio track. You can choose one of the Predefined size options… Or, select a Custom size in MB or Target Quality in percentage. For our example, we’ll be compressing our 167MB file to 35MB. Click on Advanced Settings. Here you can choose your codec, if you have a preference, as well as output resolution and output audio. If you’d like to use the DivX codec, you’ll need to download and install it separately. (See link below) Typically you’ll want to keep the defaults. Click “OK.” Now you’re ready to add your file conversion job to the Job queue. Click Add Job to add it to the queue. You can add multiple files conversions to the job queue and  convert them in one batch. Click Start to begin the conversion process. The process will begin. You’ll be able to see the progress in the Log window on the bottom left. When the conversion is complete you’ll see a “Job finished” and the total time in the log window.   Check your output file to see it’s compressed size. Test your video just to make sure the output quality is satisfactory.   Note:  Conversion times can vary greatly depending on the size of the file and your computer hardware. Files that are several GBs in size may take several hours to compress. AutoGK is no longer being actively developed but is still a wonderful DivX/XviD conversion tool. It can also be used to compress and convert non-copy protected DVDs.   • Where is the Mac Divx Web Player 7 cache folder?

    Until recently, I was using Divx web player 1.4.2 because it seemed to be the least buggy. It was saving files in users/xxxxxx/movies/divx movies/temporary added files and was deleting them when the cache limit was reached. Now with 7, it's saving them alright cause I can watch my HD space go down, but I can't find them. And it's not respecting the cache limit size (mine is 4GB). The only way to clear up this space is a restart of the Mac. I'm running 10.6.8and Chrome. I've looked everywhere for the folder manually. Where is it?

    I have a videocamera that uses mini-dv tapes. In the past, I've transferred the files and made DVDs, but that was time- and disk-space- consuming. I wanted to find new tools and to figure out how to convert the videos to something smaller like divx but I didn't know enough about all the different formats to answer a previous question. Well, now I've done a bunch of research and I understand some of the details of video encoding, and in the process I wrote up some notes on the different formats involved in going from a DV videocam to divx or H.264 They're a bit rambling, but in case it's of any use, I'm going to post them as an answer. I'd be very interested in anyone else's answer as well.

  • Use DivX settings to encode to mp4 with ffmpeg

    I'm used to use VirtualDub to encode a video to AVI container with DivX-codec (and MP3 for audio). Now I'm planning to use ffmpeg to encode videos to MP4 container with h264-codec. What I've figured out is that I need to use libx264 and one of those presets to make anything work. However, I'm amazed about the video bitrate ffmpeg uses for encoding.   • DV-AVI in DivX Plus Player and VirtualDub - playback issue

    I have an AVI-video which I had (digitally) transferred from a DV camera to my PC. The video contains errors at the beginning most likely because the DV tape was pretty old. When playing this video in the DivX Plus Player I get some picture artefacts and some high noise peaks of the sound. These stops after two seconds. When I'm playing this video in VirtualDub (where I want to cut it) I get the same picture artefacts. But the sound errors (those loud high peaks) lasts ten seconds. These sound errors are also contained in the cutted video. Why does the video have more errors when played in VirtualDub? I think because of different codecs which are used for decoding the video? How can I change the codec which VirtualDub uses for decoding? I have installed ffdshow for this but it seems that it is not used because I don't get the ffdshow icon in the taskbar when playing the video in VirtualDub. When playing in DivX Player Plus I get this icon.

    I am looking for free software to do batch conversions of divx video files to iPhone format. I have read the thread: http://superuser.com/questions/5784/looking-to-convert-video-to-iphone-format Handbrake works good for single files but it has very little customization with regards to files names and the batch functionality is not very good (or at least I can't get it to work very easily). Can anyone recommend a good batch converter? A script for Handbrake to do a batch for all in a specific directory would be useful even.

  • Debian: video problems with VLC

    I have a problem playing AVI divx files with VLC. Yesterday upon start VLC showed an error message complaining about divx codecs and refused to proceed. Today the player starts but the video is squashed horizontally (it occupies roughly 1/4th of the VLC window which is for the other part black). I'm on an updated testing system, and before yesterday VLC was playing fine. In the meantime - after a recent dist-upgrade - I cannot run X with proprietary ATI drivers anymore, I have to use the FOSS radeonhd ones instead. I don't know if that's related but I thought it could be worth mentioning (and by the way if anyone has suggestions about this problem too, that'd be very much appreciated). How can I fix VLC's problem?

  • Windows 7 Media Center PC not displaying MKV files properly

    Does anyone know why Windows Media Center wouldn't correctly display a 16x9 video? I just upgraded my home-built HTPC from Vista Ultimate (hey, it was a giveaway) to Windows 7 Ultimate - clean install. After that, I installed the Divx7 beta (to get .MKV support) and AC3filter (so I could HEAR the MKV files). Previously, under Vista Ultimate (32 bit), I had Arcsoft's Total Theater Pro for playing Blu-Rays and MKV decoding under Media Center. Now when I play a 720p 16x9 MKV file, I get some 'letterboxing' - like it's halfway between 4x3 and 16x9 - with the aspect ration looking alightly squished as a result. Here's the wierd part. If I use the Media Center connection software in my XBox 360 - it plays perfectly, filling the 16x9 screen edge-to-edge, just like Vista's WMC software USED to. Of course, beats the network up because the XBox goes to the HTPC, the HTPC goes to my WHS machine to fetch the data, it comes back to the HTPC, gets transcoded and streamed back to the Xbox. I'm running the latest drivers for an NVidia card (as fetched by Windows 7). I have no idea WHY this is because if I play "ordinary" (i.s. SD) Divx files that are 16x9, they play just fine, scaled right up to my screen's edges. It puzzles me as to why the same machine that properly converts the bits for the Xbox can't display/scale them properly for the attached display. Mind you, Windows Media Player exhibits the same symptoms. Ideas?

  • Is there a good alternative to Videora iPod Converter?

    I use Videora to convert my videos (in DivX/XviD format) to something I can play on my iPod Classic. I really dislike it. It's clunky, riddled with adverts, sometimes doesn't convert properly (the infamous "invalid public atom" error - see Google for more) and has a UI that truly stinks. On the upside, it's free, accepts a list of video files (via the oddly hard to find "1-click convert" button) and just gets on with the converting as it already knows the correct settings for my iPod. One final nice touch is that once they are converted, it'll automatically upload them into iTunes. Are there any alternatives which have all the upsides but none of the downsides? Bonus points if they can set the metadata in iTunes correctly for TV shows (season, show, episode) and delete the converted file afterwards (as my iTunes settings means that a copy is made elsewhere). I've looked at a bunch of applications (handbrake, virtualdub, mediacoder, format factory, any video converter, convertxtodvd) but many of them fail the "just select a list of files and get on with converting" test - let alone all the other features I want. I have no desire to individually set the video size of each file or the codec or the post-processing options. I'm currently using the command line version of HandBrake (handbrakecli) and a hand-written DOS batch file to go through every file in a folder and convert it. It does most of what I want, just not in a very slick way. Can anyone recommend anything better? It needs to work on Windows 7 and be free.

  • Burning Xvid and Dvix Files problems

    Hi I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition and Nero 8. Recently I noticed that every time I go to nero and burn a dvix/xvid file as a data DVD and try to play it in a dvd player that supports these types it does not load up and play. I then go to my XP machine with Nero 6 on it and burn the exact same file as a data DVD and it works in the exact same dvd player. I am not sure why this is happening? I am not sure if it is windows 7, nero 8 or my actual dvd burner that is the problem. How should I go about and figure out what the problem is? Thanks

I don't need the whole script (loop), just what command I would use to process each avi file individually (unless the cmd itself has batch modification built into it). I don't believe the file is in an mkv container, as mkvinfo doesn't find anything.     Which is the best API to use when accessing a WebCam in .Net? (I know they can be webcam specific, I am willing to buy a new webcam if it means better results). I want to write a desktop application that will take video from a webcam and store it in MPEG4 formats (DivX, Xvid, etc...). I would also like to access bitmap stills from the device so I can do image comparison between frames. I have tried various libraries, and none have really been a great fit (some have performance issues (very inconsistent framerates), some have image quality limitations, some just crash out for seemingly no reason. I want to get high quality video (as high as I can get) and a decent framerate. My webcam is more than up to the job and I was hoping that there would be a nice Managed .Net library around that would help my cause. Are webcam APIs all just incredibly bad?

  • Does the mplayer-mozilla plugin have a problem with long DIVX videos or is this a problem with the U

    Pretty consistently when I'm watching a long DIVX movie in the browser on Karmic - say 2 hours or so - the mplayer-mozilla player stops after a half-hour or an hour and resets back to 0, so I have to reload the whole movie again over the web. It happens repeatedly so I never get past the half-way point in the DIVX version of the movie - I have to watch a flash version instead. I don't know if this is an mplayer issue or a Firefox memory issue. Anyone have any idea how to resolve this?
