  • Tomcat 7 taking ages to start up after upgrade

    I recently updated my server installation from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 7, in order to take advantage of better connection pooling. My project uses Hibernate, for object persistance, a Mysql 5.5.20 database, and memcached for caching. When I was using Tomcat 6, Tomcat would start in about 8 seconds. After moving to Tomcat 7, it now takes between 75 - 80 seconds to start (this is on a Macbook pro 15", core i7 2Ghz, 8Gb of RAM). My initial thought was that Tomcat 7 and hibernate are doing something weird (like pre-instantiating a bunch of connections or something), and the latency to the database is amplifying the effects. Could anyone shed some light on what might be causing this? Have I done something dense in my context.xml? Is hibernate perhaps to blame?

  • Which book should I pick to improve my program designs/design patterns?

    I want to learn about design patterns and from what I've seen the most recommended ones are the Gang of Four's Design Patterns and Head First Design Patterns. There are also language specific books, but I never see them recommended. I suppose it ties you to whatever strengths/weaknesses are inherent to each language, so not a good idea to learn design patterns in general. The Gang of Four's book is kinda old, so I'm wondering if there isn't a better alternative out today? I've heard the Heard First one isn't quite as good. But I'm not sure why, so it's really hard to pick either one. I've see some answers on this very site recommending both, but if I can only read one, which should I pick? I've been coding for 3+ years, though I've never had a good class on this subject. Also, would a book like Code Complete help me with this? One more thing: how often are these techniques supposed to be useful? For example, this question has me wondering if this stuff is worth the trouble. And please, tell me more than just "read x". I'd like to know why you're suggesting x.

  • Book Review: Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns by Scott Millett

    In the next few lines, I will be providing a brief review of Wrox’s Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns by Scott Millett. Design patterns have been a hot topic for many years as developers looked to do more with less, re-use as much code as possible by creating common libraries, as well as make their code easier to understand, extend and collaborate on. Scott Millett’s book covered classic and emerging patterns in a practical presentation that demonstrated with thorough examples how to put each pattern to use in the context of multi-tiered ASP.NET applications. The author’s unique approach and content earned him much kudos in the foreword by Scott Hanselman as well as online reviews. The book has 14 chapters of which 5 are dedicated to a comprehensive case study. Patterns covered therein include S.O.L.I.D, Gang of Four (GoF) as well as Martin Fowler’s Patterns of Enterprise Applications.   • How can you become a competent web application security expert without breaking the law?

    I find this to be equivalent to undercover police officers who join a gang, do drugs and break the law as a last resort in order to enforce it. To be a competent security expert, I feel hacking has to be a constant hands-on effort. Yet, that requires finding exploits, testing them on live applications, and being able to demonstrate those exploits with confidence. For those that consider themselves "experts" in Web application security, what did you do to learn the art without actually breaking the law? Or, is this the gray area that nobody likes to talk about because you have to bend the law to its limits?
