• How to stop Excel 2003 from loading a Gazillion files

  One of my soon-to-be-ex-friends got an Excel file from another friend of his and decided to click on it. It started opening all kinds of files from within Excel. Over 200 and still counting when he called me. I told him to go to task manager, which showed a LOT of files in the applications tab, but only one Excel.exe in the processes tab. Closing it down there, closed down Excel. I then CrossLooped in to see if I could give him a helping hand. Each time Excel was re-opened, the mass influx of files started. They were all kinds of files, PDFs, Docs, JPGs, even some spreadsheets. It looked like the end of solitaire, with multiple windows opening (XP) and the counter on the lone Excel button on the task bar counting off the files. I did the task manager exit routine and went looking for temp files. I CrapCleaned out the system. Made sure I went through the files created in the last hour and deleted anything with a temp anywhere in it. I also deleted the crappy infected/corrupted file from it's place on the desktop (yeah, I know, I yelled for 15 minutes on THAT subject). Despite a delousing, the restart of Excel, which complained of a deactivated add-in, would start the cascading windows, whether I answered yes or no to that question. Yes, it knew it had a serious crash, but why would it just keep on trying to load the bad file, even when I got rid of it? But here's the real question. WHERE was it loading from? I went through the backup folder and NOTHING was there! So what's the process for starting Excel WITHOUT it trying to do a crash recovery? Sort of makes me feel stupid at times. • CKEditor instance in a jQuery dialog

  Hey, I am using jQuery to open a dialog window with a textarea transformed into an instance of CKEditor. I'm using the jQuery adapter provided by the CKEditor team but when the dialog window opens up I cannot interact with the editor (it's created but "null" is written in the content space and I can't click on anything or modify the content). This bug report seems to say that by using a patch provided the issue is fixed but it doesn't seem to be working for me... • [php] Cookies only changing value every two page refreshes?

  Hello, I'm trying to implement some pixel tracking where I will save certain values in a cookie to then forward users to another page. If users purchase a product after being forwarded to the online store by us the store adds an image tag in the page with our php script included. With the values set in the cookie we would like to track conversions. I understand this tracking technique has some limitations (like if a user has cookies turned off or if they do not load images but that's the direction my client wanted to go in). The problem I'm having is that the cookie's behaviour is extremely... random. I've been trying to track their values (with a var_dump so I don't have to wait for a page reload to view the cookie's value) but it seems the value for one field only gets refreshed every two page reloads. setcookie("tracking[cn]", $cn, time()+3600*24*7,'/','mydomain.com'); setcookie("tracking[t]", $t, time()+3600*24*7,'/','mydomain.com'); setcookie("tracking[kid]", $kid, time()+3600*24*7,'/','mydomain.com'); redirectTo($redirect_url); the values of cn, t are fine but for some reason kid is always wrong (having taken the value of the previous kid) Any help would be extremely appreciated I've been at this all evening! :)

• Why should I abstract my data layer?

  OOP principles were difficult for me to grasp because for some reason I could never apply them to web development. As I developed more and more projects I started understanding how some parts of my code could use certain design patterns to make them easier to read, reuse, and maintain so I started to use it more and more. The one thing I still can't quite comprehend is why I should abstract my data layer. Basically if I need to print a list of items stored in my DB to the browser I do something along the lines of: $sql = 'SELECT * FROM table WHERE type = "type1"';' $result = mysql_query($sql); while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { echo '<li>'.$row['name'].'</li>'; } I'm reading all these How-Tos or articles preaching about the greatness of PDO but I don't understand why. I don't seem to be saving any LoCs and I don't see how it would be more reusable because all the functions that I call above just seem to be encapsulated in a class but do the exact same thing. The only advantage I'm seeing to PDO are prepared statements. I'm not saying data abstraction is a bad thing, I'm asking these questions because I'm trying to design my current classes correctly and they need to connect to a DB so I figured I'd do this the right way. Maybe I'm just reading bad articles on the subject :) I would really appreciate any advice, links, or concrete real-life examples on the subject!

• Does BizSpark preclude you from accepting funding elsewhere?

  I am going to embark very soon on a software venture (have been a consultant and employee up until now). I see advantages in signing up for Microsoft's BizSpark. However, I wonder if doing so would preclude me from accepting funding from some equity-esque arrangements potentially available via crowdfunding. I know BizSpark's legal agreement probably spells this out, but it's about a gazillion pages long, so I'm hoping somebody here has existing knowledge of this so I don't have to spend a lot of time reading legalese.

• I think client's project will be a flop; should I discuss with him? [closed]

I had an overview of it over the phone and from what I understand there are gazillion such concepts already floating and most of them are disasters and I have reasons to believe that his project is significantly likely to have the same fate. Should I raise/discuss the commercial feasibility of his idea with him or simply accept the project, give my best and leave out all the rest?

  I'm trying to make a huge Excel sheet reasonably maintainable, but it's huge in the "hundred-table-db" direction, rather than the "hundred-thousand-row-table" direction. • Which Linux is the most efficient?

  Simple question: There is a gazillion Linux distributions out there. Which one (distribution/incl. window manager) makes (technically) the most efficient use of my (aging) computer ? I have appx. 1 GB RAM and a 1.6 GHz processor, 120 GB hd. I develop applications (C++/.NET/mono/ASP/PostGre SQL/). Usually, I prefer distros with apt-get. Anybody knows which one takes the most care of my limited RAM, and wich one is the fastest/slimmest of them all, that has a decent repo and is damn fast)

• Changing file extension associations

  What is the easiest way to permanently change association (program which opens etc.) for several file extensions at once? What I mean? Let's say you used TextEditorUncool up until now to open txt, dat, bat and abc files. Now you got TextEditorReallyCool and you wish if there was an application which on the left had a name of the program, and on the right a list of file extensions associated with it (which it, let's say, opens). Is there such a thing? Usually programs change this thing during installation (some even ask before), but in the case of portable programs one usually has to do it by hand, and for editors which open a gazillion of different file extensions, it gets tiresome really fast. All ideas welcomed !

• iTunes randomly plays songs while importing, and can't be stopped

  I'm importing a gazillion songs over the network into iTunes. Every now and then, it starts playing the song it's currently importing. And because iTunes is basically frozen up during the import process, I can't actually stop it. Then it will suddenly jump to another song a bit later on. Pretty irritating. Is it a known issue? • Need help in determing what, if any, tools can be used to create a free Flash game

  Yes I proudly -and sadly- declare that I am a complete nincompoop when it comes to Flash, and I have been fishing around the big wide web for information. The reason for this is that I have been contracted to create a game(s) for a website -the usual flash-based games caveat. Please I do not mean things like by those gaming generator websites, I mean small yet professional games- but the caveat, as always, is that impossible dream: it needs to be done all for free. The budget...well imagine it as not there. Annoyingly is that I am a game designer yes, but with a ridiculously tight deadline I haven't got much time to re-learn (ah the heady days of programming at uni) everything by the end of March, so I'd like to ask some people who know their stuff rather than keep looking at a gazillion different things. This is my understanding: with the flash sdk you can create a game, albeit you need to be pretty programming savvy. FlashDevelop helps there -yet I am not entirely sure how. Yet even FD says to use Flash for the animation/graphics. Yes its undeniably powerful but as I said there is the unattainable demand of no money. The million dollar question: what, if any, tools can I use to create a free flash game?

• Gödel, Escher, Bach - Gödel's string

  In the book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter, the author gives us a representation of the precursor to Gödel's string (Gödel's string's uncle) as: ~Ea,a': (I don't have the book in front of me but I think that's right). All that remains to get Gödel's string is to plug the Gödel number for this string into the free variable a''. What I don't understand is how to get the Gödel number for the functions PROOF-PAIR and ARITHMOQUINE. I understand how to write these functions in a programming language like FlooP (from the book) and could even write them myself in C# or Java, but the scheme that Hofstadter defines for Gödel numbering only applies to TNT (which is just his own syntax for natural number theory) and I don't see any way to write a procedure in TNT since it doesn't have any loops, variable assignments etc. Am I missing the point? Perhaps Gödel's string is not something that can actually be printed, but rather a theoretical string that need not actually be defined? I thought it would be neat to write a computer program that actually prints Gödel's string, or Gödel's string encoded by Gödel numbering (yes, I realize it would have a gazillion digits) but it seems like doing so requires some kind of procedural language and a Gödel numbering system for that procedural language that isn't included in the book. Of course once you had that, you could write a program that plugs random numbers into variable "a" and run procedure PROOF-PAIR on it to test for theoromhood of Gödel's string. If you let it run for a trillion years you might find a derivation that proves Gödel's string.

• Maven multi-module project with many reports: looking for an example

  Is there an open source project that can serve as a good example on how to use the maven site plugin to generate reports? I would prefer it to consist of many modules, possibly hierarchically structured use as many plugins as possible (surefire, jxr, pmd, findbugs, javadoc, checkstyle, you name it) the reports should be aggregated: if some tests fail you want to have a single page that shows all modules with failing tests, not only a gazillion individual pages to check include enterprisey stuff (WAR, EAR etc), but this is not so important. The idea is to have something where you can gather ideas on how it is done and what is possible.

• Security precautions and techniques for a User-submitted Code Demo Area

  Hey folks Maybe this isn't really feasible. But basically, I've been developing a snippet-sharing website and I would like it to have a 'live demo area'. For example, you're browsing some snippets and click the Demo button. A new window pops up which executes the web code. I understand there are a gazillion security risks involved in doing this - XSS, tags, nasty malware/drive by downloads, pr0n, etc. etc. etc. The community would be able to flag submissions that are blatantly naughty but obviously some would go undetected (and, in many cases, someone would have to fall victim to discover whatever nasty thing was submitted). So I need to know: What should I do - security wise - to make sure that users can submit code, but that nothing malicious can be run - or executed offsite, etc? For your information my site is powered by PHP using CodeIgniter. Jack

• Getting fields of a class through reflection

  I've done it a gazillion times in the past and successfully so. This time, I'm suffering from lapses of amnesia. So, I am just trying to get the fields on an object. It is an embarrassingly simple and stupid piece of code that I am writing in a test solution before I do something really useful in production code. Strangely, the GetFieldsOf method reports a zero length array on the "Amazing" class. • php's strip_tags() won't work

  Hello everyone I'm trying to tweak a tiny bit a wordpress, but i am level 0 in php, so i kinda suck :/ I want to add a custom 'tweet this' button (i know there already is a gazillion of them, i just wanted to do it on my own, for fun) So, i'm trying this : <a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=<?php strip_tags(the_excerpt()) ?>" >tweet this</a> the_excerpt() returns "<p> ... excerpt ... </p>" and the strip_tags function does not strip those <p> tags !   Try this: unsigned long long int N; = 23229877463LL; NSString* s = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"dec:%qi, hex:%qX",N,N]; NSLog(@"output: %@",s); output: dec:23229877460, hex:689BCCD400000005 What's up with the 00000005??? In mySQL, hex(23229877460) = 5689BCCD4. Also, every other language seems to do this correctly. A 16 digit long hex is like 4 gazillion (16^16), right? How can I get objective-c to format hex numbers that other languages can understand?

• Disabling mouse acceleration in Mac OS X

  I've been looking for a solution to the unusable mouse problem in Mac OS X for ages. I've tried a gazillion programs and fiddled with every setting there is or there can be added. So far, I haven't found a way to get linear mouse response in Mac OS X. At this point I'm seriously considering installing another operating system. But before I do that, or go hacking around OS binaries, maybe someone here has a solution? I want linear mouse response. I want high sensitivity. I like my touchpad acceleration and would like to keep it if possible. Any ideas? P.S. I've been at this for a long time, I'll probably have already tried the most popular answers. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.5 on a MacBook Pro. I don't use a particular brand of mouse. I'm not looking for any commercial solutions. I've tried: Mouse Acceleration Preferences Pane, the Snow Leopard version of which can get me close to a linear response, but at the cost of tracking speed (sensitivity). • How can one make vim change terminal colors?

  I am using command line vim running from an xterm (which runs sh). I have color in vim according to a color scheme I like. The problem is, as usual with 256-color terminals and truecolor color schemes, colors are wrong. Now, I know I can do a gazillion things to fix this, including installing gvim, but I like my terminal. In fact, using xrdb [-merge] .Xresource file, I now actually have xterm override the color values, and the theme now looks perfect. Since, I may be switching to another theme, I need some workflow to have vim actually do what xrdb does - to reset terminal color pallette. Because right now I have to reset color values with xrdb ... first, then launch another xterm to actually use these values, then launch vim from that newly opened xterm to have the exact colors. The way I understood it is that vim color scheme, just as any other terminal application, uses colors by referencing their ids, and X resources set the values themselves. I think I saw somewhere on Internet, that terminal control character sequences can reset actual color values, in fact, I am sure they can - I managed to set my terminal background color at runtime. How would I make vim execute these sequences to match values for the color scheme? And is there any reference to these control sequences, as part of any standard?

• Trying to limit IMAP folders/mailboxes my iPhone/iPad sees

  (Note: I am using dovecot 1.0.10 on Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. Yes, I know I need to upgrade before next year :) (Note: The SMTP/IMAP server in question only serves my family, so there's only a very few users. Certainly what I propose below, even it it works, would be a logistical nightmare with any significant number of users). I have noticed (and have confirmed via google) that the iOS mail app is terrible in its handling of IMAP subscriptions, namespaces, etc. For example, my iPhone and iPad will see EVERYTHING (all mailboxes, folders, etc.), whereas clients like Thunderbird, alpine, etc. only see what I tell them to see. This makes it an incredible pain to move mail between mailboxes because I have to scroll through a gazillion things. The mail_location in dovecot.conf is: mail_location = mbox:%h/Mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u To get around this, I've been considering doing the following for user foo: Create a dovecot userdb with a foo-ios virtual user in it, whose UID is identical to that of the real (in /etc/passwd) foo user and with a homedir of /home/foo-ios. ln -s /var/mail/foo /var/mail/foo-ios mkdir -p /home/foo-ios/Mail cd /home/foo-ios/Mail ln -s /home/foo/Mail/mailbox-i-want-visible mailbox-i-want-visible Make symlinks for the rest of limited set of mailboxes/folders I want visible to the iOS mail app. chown -R foo:foo /home/foo-ios Change iOS mail app settings to log in as user foo-ios instead of user foo. Will this work or will there be some index/file corruption hell because there will be two sets of indexes (one set living in /home/foo/Mail/.imap and other set living in /home/foo-ios/Mail/.imap) indexing the same underlying mbox files? And I'd be more than happy to hear of a better way to do this with dovecot! (Or to hear that dovecot 2.x works better with iOS devices).

• a brand new FS based on a database without using fuse

  hi all, To serve millions of files out of a single directory, being able to connect to a drive from hundreds of endpoints, and for some other reasons (to avoid gluster/nfs/all fs based networking solutions), I want to evaluate the possibility of making a filesystem that's based on a mongodb (or any other). Basically, it works like fusefs, every single file is kept in mongo gridfs. In theory, I do, mount mongodbfs /mountPoint mongodb://localhost then when i say touch /mountPoint/test.txt this file is inserted into mongodb. This FS will also store uid/gid and perms with the file, we can throw hundreds of servers to it, and no useradd will be necessary. I'm not thinking to include all the features of FS, just the ones we need. My question is, how do I start my quest in finding resources, books, links, people, developers who'd help me implement this? at least a proof of concept. Is it feasible? What should I expect as a timeline for such undertaking? Please only think about gazillion small files and folders.

• iptables : how to allow incoming ftp traffic?

  Hi, Still fighting my way through the jungle that is called iptables. I have managed to allow FTP access outside of our LAN: both these would work. NOTE: eth0 is the LAN interface and eth1 is the WAN interface. iptables -t filter -A FORWARD -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 20:21 -j ACCEPT or iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -p tcp --sport 20:21 --dport 1024:65535 -j ACCEPT But when i connect to a external FTP server i manage to log in and all is fine until it wishes to List the directory content. Then nothing happens as the data is blocked, due to the fact that i do not have a rule set up to allow it! (my last rule on the FORWARD chain is to block all traffic) I have tried a gazillion rules (many of which i did not understand) to try and allow the FTP traffic back through my server. One such rule for example was: iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -p tcp --sport 20:21 --dport 1024:65535 -j ACCEPT But i cannot get the List to work. It just times out after a while. Would anyone perhaps know how to build a rule which would allow FTP to List / allow such traffic back? Or have a link to sources i could work through? Thank you,
