  • is mysql index useful on column 'state' when only doing bit-operations on the column?

    - by Geert-Jan
I have a lot of domain entities (stored in mysql) which undergo lots of different operations. Each operation is executed from a different program. I need to keep (flow)-state for these entities which I implemented in as a long field 'flowstate' used as a bitset. to query mysql for entities which have undergone a certain operation I do something like: select * from entities where state >> 7 & 1 = 1 Indicating bit 7 (cooresponding to operation 7) has run. (<-- simplified) Anyway, I really didn't pay attention to the performance implications of this setup in the beginning, and I think I'm in a bit of trouble since queries as the above run pretty slow. What I'd like to know: Does an mysql index on 'flowstate' help at all? After all it's not a single value Mysql can quickly find using a binary sort or whatever. If it doesn't, are there any other things I could do to speed things up? . Are there special 'mask-indices' for fields with use-cases as the above? TIA, Geert-jan

  • Rainbows and Unicorns at the Devoxx OTN Hack Fest

    - by Tori Wieldt
At the OTN Hack Fest at Devoxx, several developers did their first "hello world" with the Internet of Things (IoT). They had fun and built basic applications with Java Embedded, Raspberry Pi and Leap Motion controllers. Experts Yara & Vinicius Senger and Geert Bevin provided the basics and support. Geert Bevin did a bit of hacking too. Check out this video to see what he came up with a short amount of time: &amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;span id=&amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;XinhaEditingPostion&amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/span&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; Learn more about Java Embedded at the Oracle Technology Network.

  • A linq join combined with a regex

    - by Geert Beckx
Is it possible to combine these 2 queries or would this make my code too complex? Also I think there should be a performance gain by combining these queries since I think in the near future my source table could be over 11000 records. This is what i came up with so far : Dim lit As LiteralControl ' check characters not in alphabet Dim r As New Regex("^[^a-zA-Z]+") Dim query = From o In source.ToTable _ Where r.IsMatch(o.Field(Of String)("nam")) lit = New LiteralControl(String.Format("letter: {0}, count: {1}<br />", "0-9", query.Count)) plhAlpabetLinks.Controls.Add(lit) Dim q = From l In "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ".ToLower.ToCharArray _ Group Join o In source.ToTable _ On l Equals o.Field(Of String)("nam").ToLowerInvariant(0) Into g = Group _ Select l, g.Count ' iterate the alphabet to generate all the links. For Each letter In q.AsEnumerable lit = New LiteralControl(String.Format("letter: {0}, count: {1}<br />", letter.l, letter.Count)) plhAlpabetLinks.Controls.Add(lit) Next Kind regards, G.

  • regex: trim all strings directly preceeded by digit except if string belongs to predefined set of st

    - by Geert-Jan
I've got addresses I need to clean up for matching purposes. Part of the process is trimming unwanted suffices from housenumbers, e.g: mainstreet 4a --> mainstreet 4. However I don't want: 618 5th Ave SW --> 618 5 Ave SW in other words there are some strings (for now: st, nd, rd, th) which I don't want to strip. What would be the best method of doing this (regex or otherwise) ? a wokring regex without the exceptions would be: a = a.replaceAll("(^| )([0-9]+)[a-z]+($| )","$1$2$3"); //replace 1a --> 1 I thought about first searching and substiting the special cases with special characters while keeping the references in a map, then do the above regex, and then doing the reverse substitute using the reference map, but I'm looking for a simpler solution. Thanks

  • out-of-the-box way to get an idmap from hibernate for a given entity?

    - by Geert-Jan
Over and over again I notive myself getting a list from hibernate, and the first thing next is put it in an idmap like: List<House> entities = s.createCriteria(House.class).list(); Map<String,House> entitymap = new HashMap<String,House>(); for(TA_entity e:entities){ entitymap.put(e.getId(), e); } Is there a way to get this directly out of hibenerate? afterall Hibernate is familiar with the id.

  • raid 5 creation (using mdadm) lots of read/writes on creation: is this normal?

    - by Gbrits
I created a software raid 5 disk using: mdadm -C /dev/md2 -l5 -n4 /dev/sd[i-l] at the same time I'm using dstat to see io-activity: dstat -c -d -D total,sda1,md2,sdi,sdj,sdk,sdl -l -m -n and notice that disks sd[i-k] are all read from and sdl is written to. Now, I do understand that raid5 has to be configured, but it takes a really long time and all disks are clean & formatted (using xfs) so I figure there might be some kind of shortcut to skip (unnecessary? ) checking.. Is it? The creation is part of a time-critical nightly batch-process (run on amazon ec2) so it's not a one-time thing. Thanks, Geert-Jan
