Migrating My GWB Blog Over To WordPress

Geeks With Blogs has been good to me, but there are too many tempting things about Word Press for me to stay with GWB. Particularly their statistics features, and also I like that I can apply specific tags to my posts to make them easier to find in Google (and I never was able to get categories working on GWB). The one thing I don’t like about WordPress is I can’t seem to find a theme that stretches the Content area to take up the rest of the space on wide resolutions…..hopefully I’ll be able to overcome that obstacle soon though. For those who are curious as to how I actually moved all of my posts across, I ended up just using Live Writer to open my GWB posts, and then just changed it to publish to my WordPress blog. This was fairly painless, but with my 27 posts it took probably about 2 hours of manual effort to do. Most of the time WordPress was automatically able to copy the images over, but sometimes I had to save the pics from my GWB posts and then re-add them in Live Writer to my WordPress post. I found another developers automated solution (in alpha mode), but opted to do it manually since I wanted to manually specify Categories and Tags on each post anyways. The one thing I still have left to do is move the worthwhile comments across from the GWB posts to the new WordPress posts. The largest pain point was that with GWB I was using the Code Snippet Plugin for Live Writer for my source code snippets, and when they got transferred over to WordPress they looked horrible. So I ended up finding a new Live Writer plugin called SyntaxHighlighter that looks even nicer on my posts If anybody knows of a nice WordPress theme that stretches the content area to fit the width of the screen, please let me know. All of the themes I’ve found seem to have a max width set on them, so I end up with much wasted space on the left and right sides. GWB -- Little More Interesting Info Whilst writing the post on 'Warming with GWB', I just recalled another historic entity often shortly known as GWB. It is in fact 'GWBasic' which we I started programming about fifteen years back way back in 1994 to 1995. GWBASIC was actually a version of BASIC in the lines of BASICA from Compaq. Eventually it was absorbed into QBasic and QuickBasic suite of products. Just thought I would share this recollection too in this context.

Upcoming GWB Site Maintenance & Downtime This Weekend

GWB: 5 yr anniversary

Wow, just realized it's my 5 year anniverary on GeeksWithBlogs. Hard to believe so much time has passed. I paged back through some of my early posts, curious what sort of things about which I used to post. It's also interesting to see how my focus has changed and what really hasn't. I was also reminded that Chris Williams and I have been friends for that long. I don't blog nearly as often now as I used to do, but I still really like the GWB community, and I am honoured to be allowed to continue to be a part of it. Another 5 years ahead (or more), I hope. :-)

GWB | First Blogger Suggestion - More Customization To Skins

The first suggested item (and only at this point) was a higher level of skin customization on Geekswithblogs.net. Currently we have over 10 skins to pick from and the ability to change the CSS for those skins. In the skins list, you will find one labeled Naked that doesn't add any formatting, but allows you to define what items look like and what gets displayed. I understand our skin approach is not good by any means and needs a dramatic update. Here is what we came up with in our conversation with the blogger. Better tools for editing CSS from the serverPreview of changes before publishingRetrievable CSS configurations for different custom themesBetter image upload for use of custom themesMore skins selectionUpdated current skins to fix formatting issues with newer browsers and Firefox/Opera/ChromeI would really like to gauge your feedback on these items to see what is important. I know one of my biggest complaints I get is customizable themes, but typically users don't know about the options so we have done a bad job of explaining what is possible and showing every user how to do so. We have a public tutorial system we once tried and wanted it to be member managed as well and the GWB staff contributing, but that went downhill at some point. Maybe it is time to kick that back into gear for the new bloggers we have added over the past couple of years.What do you think? What else is on your mind?

GWB | Comment Spam On The Rise

I don’t know a member on Geekswithblogs.net that is not frustrated with the amount of spam they get. It is a major problem that we have been dealing with for 6+ years and trying to come up with new ways to fight. As spammers get smarter, we have to continue to upgrade the tools we use to combat it. Just like any spam filter, sometimes good comments will get caught up. This has been a huge concern for some bloggers causing us to tame what we call spam and not spam. So this post is here just to state we know the spam problem is like a wave, sometimes it is not so bad, other times it gets worse. Right now it is worse. One measure we will take is a requirement for CAPTCHA soon if it continues since most members don’t clean up their spam via the admin tools (which are not the best tools, I know). Also I want to solicit a better approach from the members, what would you like the spam interface on GWB to be like? Be realistic cause we all want “Zero Spam, Good Comment live”. We haven’t sent a newsletter in quite some time and I forgot the rules of theming for email clients. TechEd 2010 New Orleans - Who is coming? John and Jeff will be at TechEd 2010 New Orleans for a short time to pass out shirts to our bloggers. These are the standard GWB shirts you see some of our other bloggers wearing and one could be yours if you let us know you are coming and what your size is. We will announce where we will be once we arrive so you can wear your Geekswithblogs.net shirt and let everyone know where you blog. These shirts will be without URLs, if you want one of those, you will have to join the contest mentioned later in the newsletter. Deadline for response is next Wednesday? We hope to published a version of the shortener that will give each post a short URL and a button via your blog to publish to Twitter. This should not be a difficult task with all the new releases from Microsoft. Enabling Google Webmaster Tools With Your GWB Blog

I’ll be honest and save you some time, if you don’t have your own domain for your GWB blog, this won’t help, you may just want to move on… I don’t want to waste your time……… Still here? Good. How great are Google’s website tools? I don’t just mean Analytics which rocks, but also their Webmaster Tools (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/) which gives you a glimpse into the queries that provide you your website traffic, search engine behavior on your site, and important keywords, just to name a few. Pictured Above: Cool statistics. Problem Thanks to svickn over at wtfnext.com (another GeeksWithBlogs blog), we already have the knowledge on how to setup Google Analytics (wtfnext.com - How to: Set up Google Analytics on your GeeksWithBlogs blog). However, one of the questions raised in the post, and even semi-answered in the questions, was how to setup Google Webmaster Tools with your blog as well. At first glance, it seems like it can’t be done. Google graciously gives you several different options on how to authorize that you own a site. The authentication options are: 1. (Recommended) – Upload an HTML file to your server 2. Add a meta tag to your site’s home page 3. Use your Google Analytics account 4. Add a DNS record to your domain’s configuration Since you don’t have access to the base path, you can’t do #1. Same goes for #2 since you can’t edit the master/index page. As for #3, they REQUIRE the Analytics code to be in the <head> section of your page, so even though we can use the workaround of hosting it in the news section, it won’t allow it since it isn’t in the correct place. Solution Last I checked, I didn’t see the DNS record option for Webmaster Tools. Maybe this was recently added, or maybe I don’t remember it since I was always able to use some other method to authorize it. In this case though, this is the option that we need. My registrar wasn’t in their list, but they provide detailed enough instructions for the ‘Other’ option: Simply create a TXT record with your domain hoster (mine is DynDns), fill in the tag information, and then click verify. My entry was able to be resolved immediately, but since you are working with DNS, it may take longer. If after 24 hours you still aren’t able to verify, you can use a site such as mxtoolbox.com, and in the searchbox type “txt: {domain-name-here}”, to see if your TXT record was entered successfully. It is pretty simple to setup the TXT entry in DynDns, but if you have questions/comments, feel free to post them. Conclusion With this simple workaround (not really a workaround, but feature since they offer it..), you are now able to see loads of information regarding your standings in the world of the Google Search Engine. No critical issues? Did I do something wrong?! As an aside, you can do the same thing with the Bing Webmaster Tools by adding a CNAME record to bing.verify.com… Instructions can be found on the ‘Add Site’ popup when adding your site. If you don’t have your own domain, but continued, to read to this point – thank you!

We have struggled in the past with different approaches of getting feedback from you as bloggers. We really want to know what you would like to see, what other systems have that is helpful, and where we need to grow. This community is made up of many different individuals so the system for feedback needed a voting or liking tool for us to gage what was a popular thought or just one guys request. We would love to put every request in, but that would make the system function for some and unusable for others. This is where UserVoice comes in. In a suggestion of features, Martin Hinshelwood suggested we give UserVoice a chance. He had used it with other projects and sites and thought it would be a good feedback tool for Geekswithblogs.net. GWB | Captchas For Everyone

We have been getting hit very hard with comment spam as of late. As mentioned in the last post, this is something we typically deal with on a regular basis for the past 6 years, but some weeks are like this week where it is just crazy. Because of the way things are right now, I have disabled the ability to toggle on or off the CAPTCHA controls for comments. I know some bloggers are going to get mad, but we need to see if the lack of CAPTCHA on some blogs is the key cause of SPAM or if they are manually entering the data and filling in the CAPTCHA. I will report back on what we are seeing, but for a few weeks we are just going to require CAPTCHA controls on comments.This has been a public service announcement for Geekswithblogs.net :D Related Tags:

Introducing Ben Barreth, Community Builder & Software Developer at GWB

Please extend a warm welcome to Ben Barreth as the new community builder and full-time software developer at Geeks With Blogs. We've been wanting to add some cool features to the site but haven't had the opportunity until now. Adding Ben to the team should give us a big kick in the right direction. Ben has several years of .Net development experience and is heavily involved in the startup community in Kansas City, including the KC Startup Village as well as his own startup initiatives: Homes for Hackers and FreeIdeas.co. He loves working with people even more than coding and is excited to serve the GWB community in any way possible. Ben originally met Matt Watson as a beta tester for Stackify, the software company that gives developers the safe & secure access to troubleshoot in production. Jeff Julian and Matt are old friends and recently decided the site needed new ownership to carry it forward and build the enhancements it deserves. The site management transferred in October and Matt quickly began looking for a full-time community builder to lead the charge. Ben bumped into Matt once again at a Tech Cocktail event at the Boulevard Brewery where Stackify was presenting and an alliance was forged. Yes, the beer really IS that good! Own an iPad, iPhone, or Touch? Add GWB to your Home

I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek. Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site. We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot. Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is. Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App. Got any ideas? Here is a shot of my iPad 3G: Also, would anyone be interested in a Geekswithblogs.net custom background for the iPhone or iPad? I can put something together real quick if there are any takers.

TweetMeme Button or Template Plug-In for WLW

In my search for a way to allow readers to tweet post that I put on GWB I have come across the TweetMeme plug-in for Windows Live Writer. It automatically puts a twitter button at either the top or bottom of your post depending on how you configure it. It comes with a warning that it does not work with blog servers that strip out script from posts which I made me afraid it was going to make it incompatible with GWB. This turned out to be the case so I figured we would need either an upgrade to the GWB platform or writing my own WLW plug-in. In comes the Template plug-in. This allows you to have standardized content that you can insert with a couple of clicks via the interface below. This solved the problem (sort of). It required that I remove the standard javascript that is defined by Twitter’s button page. In the end I am hoping for an update to our Subtext implementation to incorporate features like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and G+, but this should help us until that comes along. Update: It looks like this was all useless since it seems that the buttons are in GWB. I didn’t think I saw them before. Akismet Personal Key Discovery

Akismet Personal Key Discovery No sooner did I get my GWB account than when I toured around the various features I was glad to see an Akismet configuration feature there. Akismet is really a very excellent blog-friendly tool to keep off spam from entering the blogs. With Wordpress.com, Akismet is builtin. Now I learnt about the Non-Commerical Key that Akismet gives to non-profit blogs from the settings page of GWB and signed up for one too.

Using Wordpress as a client to GeeksWithBlogs

I am really missing the tools in wordpress, that seem to be absent from GeeksWithBlogs [GWB]. The biggest two are being able to store drafts and being able to set a publish date. I have done a little research on google I have not been able to find anyone saying that they have used Wordpress as a client for GWB, let alone a how-to. Anyone got any clues or suggestions?

Podcasting vs Stack Overflow vs Geekswithblogs

For a few years now I have been looking for effective ways to be involved in the “community”. While there are a few community programming events in my area (Johannesberg), there isn’t too much face to face stuff – which has caused me to turn to the internet. My internet attempts have been varied – at first I took the passive approach of listening to tech podcasts. This was great for a while, but soon the content became semi-repetitive and a little boring. It seemed that the podcasts I was listening to all went round the same themes and speakers and while I am still a keen listener to several tech podcasts – it didn’t quench my thirst. So I began to be a bit more active – starting with stack overflow – where I would scan the site for questions that were in the realm of my ability to answer. It worked for a while but soon it began to be discouraging – there seems to be so many people that know so much more than me and are quicker at typing that I felt fairly ineffective. So while I still use Stack Overflow when I am in a pickle and need some help – it feels more like me taking from the community than giving anything. Which brought me to Geeks with blogs. Till I found GWB I hadn’t felt like I was an active part of a community. I had blogged before on Blogspot and Wordpress but hadn’t felt associated to the community. Now when I get a comment from someone on one of my GWB posts either thanking me or adding a bit more or correcting me, it makes me feel like I am contributing to a community. So well done GWB. Thanks for making a spot that makes me feel at home!

Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. I realise that it is difficult to find time to add all of the features that all the uber geeks on this site want, so why bother… lets move to the most popular and moded platform available and allow everyone to add whatever widgets they like. There are over 13k plugins available Easy augmentation model Full mobile support Regular releases lots more… This could be a turning point in the legendary history of Geeks With Blogs, be part of it… What can I do to make this happen? ASP.Net Fails to Detect IE10 without .Net Hotfix

Benny Mathew recently alerted us that he couldn’t create, edit or delete posts on GeeksWithBlogs in IE10 (Windows 8). It turns out the problem is that ASP.Net fails to detect IE10 causing a javascript error on postback. We’ll be applying a hotfix to the .Net framework on GWB shortly to fix this issue. In the meantime you can use the simple workaround outlined below. (Note that if you create posts using Windows Live Writer you won’t have this issue creating posts). Log into your GWB Account and go to the “Posts” page. Hit F12 to bring up the developer window in IE10. Click on the ‘Browser Mode’ option and change it to IE9. You should now be able to create/edit/delete posts in GWB. Note this also fixes any other sites in IE10 that might not yet have the hotfix applied. You can tell if the hotfix is the likely culprit if you’re using IE10 and see the following error in the Web Developers Console area: SCRIPT5009: '__doPostBack' is undefined Let us know ASAP if there are other issues you are experiencing that aren’t fixed by this workaround!

Outlook 2010 + Move IMAP PST file = Outlook data file cannot be accessed.

I set up a new IMAP account in Outlook 2010. It works but creates IMAP PST file in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. I want the file on my data drive in D:\Users\User\Documents\Outlook Files (the same folder where outlook automatically creates the local Outlook PST. I followed the instructions here to move the IMAP PST. Testing the account (send/receive) works fine, but if I try to manually send an email I get error 0x8004010F Outlook data file cannot be accessed. I've tried repairing the PST using SCANPST (it always finds errors), and deleting and recreating the account but I get the same error. If I move the PST file back, it works again, but this is not ideal. Note: I don't think this is a duplicate of this question as the cause is different and the solution does not help.
