  • Hiera can't find puppet environment

    - by quickshiftin
    I'm testing out hiera and hitting a snag on the hierarchy configuration. What I have is extremely simple, the part that isn't working is specification of hiera datadir files based on environment. Here's the config file (/etc/hiera.yaml) I'm trying --- :backends: - yaml :logger: console :hierarchy: - "%{::environment}" :yaml: :datadir: /var/lib/hiera Now, I have a file /var/lib/hiera/development.yaml blah: meh When I run hiera it's not finding the file or the value $ hiera -d blah DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:50:52 -0600 2013: Hiera YAML backend starting DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:50:52 -0600 2013: Looking up blah in YAML backend nil I've verified this agent is configured for development $ sudo puppet agent --configprint environment development Now let me prove hiera is capable of finding something; a change to the hiera.yaml file: :hierarchy: - development And now hiera finds the file and the value $ hiera -d blah DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:53:25 -0600 2013: Hiera YAML backend starting DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:53:25 -0600 2013: Looking up blah in YAML backend DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:53:25 -0600 2013: Looking for data source development DEBUG: Fri Oct 25 15:53:25 -0600 2013: Found blah in development meh So why isn't it working with the dynamic environment configuration? I got that straight from the documentation. Note, I have tried running the hiera command via sudo with no change in the result.

  • converting node inheritance to hiera

    - by quickshiftin
    I'm working on moving over a node inheritance tree to hiera. Presently working on the hierarchy. Prior to hiera, my nodes had a hierarchy as such base pre-prod qa nodes staging nodes development nodes prod nodes Now I'm trying to get the same tier with hiera. Starting out I have this :hierarchy: - base - "%{environment}" - "%{clientcert}" but I need another level to capture pre-prod and prod. My thought would be to add an entry to puppet.conf, something like [agent] realm = pre-prod then :hierarchy: - base - "%{realm}" - "%{environment}" - "%{clientcert}" A couple of questions Are you allowed to place arbitrary properties into puppet.conf? Will hiera see the realm property?

  • Hiera datatypes wont load in Puppet

    - by Cole Shores
    I have spent a couple of days on this, followed the instructions on http://downloads.puppetlabs.com/docs/puppetmanual.pdf and even the Puppet Training Advanced Puppet manual. When I run a test against it, the results always come back as 'nil' and Im not sure why. I am running Puppet 3.6.1 Community Edition, with Hiera 1.2.1 on SLES 11. My puppet.conf file at /etc/puppet/puppet.conf consists of: [main] # The Puppet log directory. # The default value is '$vardir/log'. logdir = /var/log/puppet # Where Puppet PID files are kept. # The default value is '$vardir/run'. rundir = /var/run/puppet # Where SSL certificates are kept. # The default value is '$confdir/ssl'. ssldir = $vardir/ssl certificate_revocation = false [master] hiera_config=/etc/puppet/hiera.yaml reporturl = http://puppet2.vvmedia.com/reports/upload ssl_client_header = SSL_CLIENT_S_DN ssl_client_verify_header = SSL_CLIENT_VERIFY # certname = dev-puppetmaster2.vvmedia.com # ca_name = 'dev-puppetmaster2.vvmedia.com' # facts_terminus = rest # inventory_server = localhost # ca = false [agent] # The file in which puppetd stores a list of the classes # associated with the retrieved configuratiion. Can be loaded in # the separate ``puppet`` executable using the ``--loadclasses`` # option. # The default value is '$confdir/classes.txt'. classfile = $vardir/classes.txt # Where puppetd caches the local configuration. An # extension indicating the cache format is added automatically. # The default value is '$confdir/localconfig'. localconfig = $vardir/localconfig my /etc/puppet/hiera.yaml consists of: :backends: yaml :yaml: :datadir: /etc/puppet/hieradata :hierarchy: - common - database I have a directory created in /etc/puppet/hieradata and within it contains: /etc/puppet/hieradata/common.yaml :nameserver: ["dnsserverfoo1", "dnsserverfoo2"] :smtp_server: relay.internalfoo.com :syslog_server: syslogfoo.com :logstash_shipper: logstashfoo.com :syslog_backup_nfs: nfsfoo:/vol/logs :auth_method: ldap :manage_root: true and /etc/puppet/hieradata/database.yaml :enable_graphital: true :mysql_server_package: MySQL-server :mysql_client_package: MySQL-client :allowed_groups_login: extranet_users does anyone have any idea what could be causing Hiera to not load the requested values? I have tried even restarting the Master. Thanks in advance, Cole

  • Hiera concatenated lookup from yaml

    - by Brian
    I am trying to configure the puppet-logstash module via Hiera. When I make the call to hiera('profiles::logstash::config'), the return value is a concatenated string. It tells me that it cannot convert a String into a hash. shipper.pp class profiles::logstash::shipper() { $shipper_config = hiera('profiles::logstash::config') notice("${shipper_config}") class { 'logstash': ensure => 'present', version => '1.4.1-1_bd507eb', status => 'enabled', } profiles::logstash::config { $shipper_config: } include logstash } hostname.yaml classes: - os::repo - profiles::logstash::shipper profiles::logstash::config: - {content: this is a test, order: 10} Output when used with notice(): order10contentthis is a test Did I order my YAML wrong?

  • hiera data source in using puppet syntax?

    - by Zoredache
    The documentation for hiera on docs.puppetlabs.com seems to give me the impression that I can use puppet syntax to describe my data. Or posssibly will be able to in the future. See: Coming soon. Is this functionality present in a release version of puppet, and just not documented, or is this still being developed? If this functionality is present, does anyone have examples of how to actually use this? The presence of the puppet_backend.rb file on my system gives which was part of the puppetmaster package makes me thing that this functionality is present, but just not documented. So I am trying to figure out how to actually use this.

  • need help writing puppet module for sssd.conf using Hiera

    - by mr.zog
    I need to build a module to manage /etc/sssd/sssd.conf on our Red Hat VMs. The sssd modules published on the forge don't seem to do what I want, nor do I feel like forking any of them. I want to keep all the configuration data in Hiera's common.yaml file. Below is my sssd.conf file. [sssd] config_file_version = 2 services = nss, pam domains = default [nss] filter_groups = root filter_users = root reconnection_retries = 3 entry_cache_timeout = 300 entry_cache_nowait_percentage = 75 [pam] [domain/default] auth_provider = ldap ldap_id_use_start_tls = True chpass_provider = ldap cache_credentials = True ldap_search_base = dc=ederp,dc=com id_provider = ldap ldap_uri = ldaps://lvldap1.lvs01.ederp.com/ ldaps://lvldap2.lvs01.ederp.com/ ldap_tls_cacertdir = /etc/openldap/cacerts What is the best, most economical way to build the sssd.conf file? Should I have multiple .pp files such as domain.pp, pam.pp etc. or should all the lines of configuration land in init.pp?

  • Puppet&Hiera: $variable is not an hash or array when accessing it

    - by txworking
    I wrote a puppet module and the content of init.pp was: class install( $common_instanceconfig = hiera_hash('common_instanceconfig'), $common_instances = hiera('common_instances') ) { define instances { common { $title: name => $title, path => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['path'], version => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['version'], files => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['files'], pre => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['pre'], after => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['after'], properties => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['properties'], require => $common_instanceconfig[$title]['require'] , } } instances {$common_instances:} } And the hieradata file was: classes: - install common_instances: - common_instance_1 - common_instance_2 common_instanceconfig: common_instance_1 path : '/opt/common_instance_1' version : 1.0 files : software-1.bin pre : pre_install.sh after : after_install.sh properties: "properties" common_instance_2: path : '/opt/common_instance_2' version : 2.0 files : software-2.bin pre : pre_install.sh after : after_install.sh properties: "properties" I always got a error message When puppet agent run Error: common_instanceconfig String is not an hash or array when accessing it with common_instance_1 at /etc/puppet/modules/install/manifests/init.pp:16 on node puppet.agent1.tmp It seems $common_instances can be got correctly, but $commono_instanceconfig always be treated as a string. I used YAML.load_file to load the hieradata file, and got a correct hash object. Can anybody help?

  • hiera_include equivalent for resource types

    - by quickshiftin
    I'm using the yumrepo built-in type. I can get a basic integration to hiera working yumrepo { hiera('yumrepo::name') : metadata_expire => hiera('yumrepo::metadata_expire'), descr => hiera('yumrepo::descr'), gpgcheck => hiera('yumrepo::gpgcheck'), http_caching => hiera('yumrepo::http_caching'), baseurl => hiera('yumrepo::baseurl'), enabled => hiera('yumrepo::enabled'), } If I try to remove that definition and instead go for hiera_include('classes'), here's what I've got in the corresponding yaml backend classes: - "yumrepo" yumrepo::metadata_expire: 0 yumrepo::descr: "custom repository" yumrepo::gpgcheck: 0 yumrepo::http_caching: none yumrepo::baseurl: "http://myserver/custom-repo/$basearch" yumrepo::enabled: 1 I get this error on an agent Error 400 on SERVER: Could not find class yumrepo I guess you can't get away from some sort of minimal node declaration w/ hiera and resource types? Maybe hiera_hash is the way to go? I gave this a shot, but it produces a syntax error yumrepo { 'hnav-development': hiera_hash('yumrepo') }

  • Hiera + Puppet classes

    - by Amadan
    I'm trying to figure out Puppet (3.0) and how it relates to built-in Hiera. So this is what I tried, an extremely simple example (I'll make a more complex hierarchy when I manage to get the simple one working): # /etc/puppet/hiera.yaml :backends: - yaml :hierarchy: - common :yaml: :datadir: /etc/puppet/hieradata # /etc/puppet/hieradata/common.yaml test::param: value # /etc/puppet/modules/test/manifests/init.pp class test ($param) { notice($param) } # /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp include test If I directly apply it, it's fine: $ puppet apply /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp Scope(Class[Test]): value If I go through puppet master, it's not fine: $ puppet agent --test Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 400 on SERVER: Must pass param to Class[Test] at /etc/puppet/manifests/site.pp:1 on node <nodename> What am I missing? EDIT: I just left the office but a thought struck me: I should probably restart puppet master so it can see the new hiera.conf. I'll try that on Monday; in the meantime, if anyone figures out some not-it problem, I'd appreciate it :)

  • How do I use saz-sudo puppet module to deploy my own sudoers file with hiera?

    - by mr.zog
    I have saz-sudo installed and have created a site_sudo module based (I hope) on it. Here's what I have in my site_sudo/manifest/init.pp file: class { 'site_sudo': } sudo::conf { 'web': source => 'puppet:///files/etc/sudoers', } sudo::conf { 'syseng': priority => 10, content => "%sysadm ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL", } include sudo No matter what I do, the sudoers file on the target is always overwritten with the sudoers.rhel6 file from saz-sudo module. I'm using common.yaml too: classes: - site_sudo

  • Proper way to use hiera with puppetlabs-spec-helper?

    - by Lee Lowder
    I am trying to write some rspec tests for my modules. Most of them now use hiera. I have a .fixures.yml: fixtures: repositories: stdlib: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetlabs-stdlib.git hiera-puppet: https://github.com/puppetlabs/hiera-puppet.git symlinks: mongodb: "#{source_dir}" and a spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb: require 'spec_helper' describe 'mongodb', :type => 'class' do context "On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user" do let :facts do { :osfamily => 'Debian', :operatingsystem => 'Ubuntu', :operatingsystemrelease => '12.04' } end it { should contain_user('XXXX').with( { 'uid' => '***' } ) should contain_group('XXXX').with( { 'gid' => '***' } ) should contain_package('mongodb').with( { 'name' => 'mongodb' } ) should contain_service('mongodb').with( { 'name' => 'mongodb' } ) } end end but when I run the spec test, I get: # rake spec /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -S rspec spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb --color F Failures: 1) mongodb On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user Failure/Error: should contain_user('XXXX').with( { 'uid' => '***' } ) LoadError: no such file to load -- hiera_puppet # ./spec/fixtures/modules/hiera-puppet/lib/puppet/parser/functions/hiera.rb:3:in `function_hiera' # ./spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb:15 Finished in 0.05415 seconds 1 example, 1 failure Failed examples: rspec ./spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb:14 # mongodb On an Ubuntu install, admin and single user rake aborted! /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -S rspec spec/classes/mongodb_spec.rb --color failed Tasks: TOP => spec_standalone (See full trace by running task with --trace) Module spec testing is relatively new, as is hiera. So far I have been unable to find any suitable solutions. (the back and forth on puppet-dev was interesting, but not helpful). What changes do I need to make to get this to work? Installing puppet from a gem and hacking on rubylib isn't a viable solution due to corporate policy. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS + Puppet 2.7.17 + hiera 0.3.0.

  • How to define nodes from a Hiera file in Puppet?

    - by Pigueiras
    I am using puppet and the puppet network device management module and I am trying to build my custom type. In the built-in type for the routers configuration, you can specify a list of nodes and then the configuration inside that node: node "c2950.domain.com" { Interface { duplex => auto, speed => auto } interface { "FastEthernet 0/1": description => "--> to end-user workstation", mode => access, native_vlan => 1000 # [...] More configuration } What I am trying to do, is to move the manifest declaration of the nodes and the configuration of my custom type to a Hiera file like this one: nodes: - node1 - node2 config_device: node1: custom_parameter: "whatever1" node2: custom_parameter: "whatever2" And then in the manifest iterate over the hiera file creating the nodes with the configuration of each node with something like (I am taking as reference this question in serverfault): class my_class { $nodes = hiera_array('nodes') define hash_extract() { $conf_hash = hiera_hash("config_device") $custom_paramter = $conf_hash[$name] ## TRICK lies in $name variable node $name { my_custom_device { $name: custom_parameter => $device_conf['custom_parameter'] } } } hash_extract{$pdu_names: } } } But for this solution I have two problems, I can not define a node inside a define and I can not parameterize a node name. So, is there any way to declare nodes from a Hiera file with their configuration inside?

  • Drill through table does not show correct count when used with a dimension having parent child hiera

    - by Arun Singhal
    Hi All, I have a dimension with parent child hierarchy as shown in code block. The issue i am facing is if i have a filter on parent child dimension then drill through table does not show filtered data instead it shows all the data for that dimension. Here is an example. <Dimension type="StandardDimension" name="page_type_d" caption="Page Type"> <Hierarchy name="page_type_h" hasAll="true" allMemberName="all_page_types" allMemberCaption="All Page Types" primaryKey="id"> <Table name="npg_page_type_view" alias="pt"> </Table> <Level name="Page Type" column="id" nameColumn="display_name" parentColumn="parent_id" nullParentValue="0" type="Integer" uniqueMembers="true" levelType="Regular" hideMemberIf="Never" caption="Page Type"> <Closure parentColumn="parent_id" childColumn="page_type_id"> <Table name="dim_page_types_closure"> </Table> </Closure> </Level> </Hierarchy> Now suppose i have 4 rows in npg_page_type_view table id display_name parent_id 19 HTML 100 20 PDF 100 21 XML 0 100 Total 0 Now suppose in my fact table i have following records id count 19 2 20 3 21 1 Following is my analysis view. Total (HTML and PDF) - 5 HTML - 2 PDF - 3 XML - 1 Now if i add filter(say Total) on this analysis view using OLAP cube. Then my analysis view shows the following. Total (HTML and PDF) - 5 Upto this point everything works fine. Now if i click on 5 (to view drill through table) It shows me data against all page type i.e. HTML, PDF, XML but as per filter it should show only HTML and PDF. Is it an exciting issue or am i doing something wrong here? Please help me.

  • Puppet: how to use data from a MySQL table in Puppet 3.0 templates?

    - by Luke404
    I have some data whose source-of-truth is in a MySQL database, size is expected to max out at the some-thousands-rows range (in a worst-case scenario) and I'd like to use puppet to configure files on some servers with that data (mostly iterating through those rows in a template). I'm currently using Puppet 3.0.x, and I cannot change the fact that MySQL will be the authoritative source for that data. Please note, data comes from external sources and not from puppet or from the managed nodes. What possible approaches are there? Which one would you recommend? Would External Node Classifiers be useful here? My "last resort" would be regularly dumping the table to a YAML file and reading that through Hiera to a Puppet template, or to directly dump the table in one or more pre-formatted text file(s) ready to be copied to the nodes. There is an unanswered question on SF about system users but the fundamental issue is probably similar to mine - he's trying to get data out of MySQL.

  • How can the little guys effectively learn and use puppet?

    - by drumfire
    Six months ago, in our not-for-profit project we decided to start migrating our system management to a Puppet controlled environment because we are expecting our number of servers to grow substantially between now and a year from now. Since the decision has been made our IT guys have become a bit too annoyed a bit too often. Their biggest objections are: "We're not programmers, we're sysadmins"; Modules are available online but many differ from one another; wheels are being reinvented too often, how do you decide which one fits the bill; Code in our repo is not transparent enough, to find how something works they have to recurse through manifests and modules they might have even written themselves a while ago; One new daemon requires writing a new module, conventions have to be similar to other modules, a difficult process; "Let's just run it and see how it works" Tons of hardly known 'extensions' in community modules: 'trocla', 'augeas', 'hiera'... how can our sysadmins keep track? I can see why a large organisation would dispatch their sysadmins to puppet courses to become puppet masters. But how would smaller players get to learn puppet to a professional level if they do not go to courses and basically learn it via their browser and editor?

  • puppet master REST API returns 403 when running under passenger works when master runs from command line

However for most of the catalog, files and certitifcate request I get a 403 response. ### Authenticated paths - these apply only when the client ### has a valid certificate and is thus authenticated # allow nodes to retrieve their own catalog path ~ ^/catalog/([^/]+)$ method find allow $1 # allow nodes to retrieve their own node definition path ~ ^/node/([^/]+)$ method find allow $1 # allow all nodes to access the certificates services path ~ ^/certificate_revocation_list/ca method find allow * # allow all nodes to store their reports path /report method save allow * # unconditionally allow access to all file services # which means in practice that fileserver.conf will # still be used path /file allow * ### Unauthenticated ACL, for clients for which the current master doesn't ### have a valid certificate; we allow authenticated users, too, because ### there isn't a great harm in letting that request through. # allow access to the master CA path /certificate/ca auth any method find allow * path /certificate/ auth any method find allow * path /certificate_request auth any method find, save allow * path /facts auth any method find, search allow * # this one is not stricly necessary, but it has the merit # of showing the default policy, which is deny everything else path / auth any Puppet master however does not seems to be following this as I get this error on client [amisr1@blramisr195602 ~]$ sudo puppet agent --no-daemonize --verbose --server bangvmpllda02.XXXXX.com [sudo] password for amisr1: Starting Puppet client version 3.0.1 Warning: Unable to fetch my node definition, but the agent run will continue: Warning: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /certificate_revocation_list/ca [find] at :110 Info: Retrieving plugin Error: /File[/var/lib/puppet/lib]: Failed to generate additional resources using 'eval_generate: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /file_metadata/plugins [search] at :110 Error: /File[/var/lib/puppet/lib]: Could not evaluate: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /file_metadata/plugins [find] at :110 Could not retrieve file metadata for puppet://devops.XXXXX.com/plugins: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /file_metadata/plugins [find] at :110 Error: Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /catalog/blramisr195602.XXXXX.com [find] at :110 Using cached catalog Error: Could not retrieve catalog; skipping run Error: Could not send report: Error 403 on SERVER: Forbidden request: XX.XXX.XX.XX(XX.XXX.XX.XX) access to /report/blramisr195602.XXXXX.com [save] at :110 and the server logs show XX.XXX.XX.XX - - [10/Dec/2012:14:46:52 +0530] "GET /production/certificate_revocation_list/ca? Do I still have to tweak any specifics to auth.conf for getting this to work? Update I added verbose logging to the puppet master and restarted nginx; here's the additional info I see in logs Mon Dec 10 18:19:15 +0530 2012 Puppet (err): Could not resolve 10.209.47.31: no name for 10.209.47.31 Mon Dec 10 18:19:15 +0530 2012 access[/] (info): defaulting to no access for 10.209.47.31 Mon Dec 10 18:19:15 +0530 2012 Puppet (warning): Denying access: Forbidden request: 10.209.47.31(10.209.47.31) access to /file_metadata/plugins [find] at :111 Mon Dec 10 18:19:15 +0530 2012 Puppet (err): Forbidden request: 10.209.47.31(10.209.47.31) access to /file_metadata/plugins [find] at :111 10.209.47.31 - - [10/Dec/2012:18:19:15 +0530] "GET /production/file_metadata/plugins? Use `puppet cert --allow-dns-alt-names sign blramisr195602.XXXXXX.com` to sign this request. [amisr1@bangvmpllDA02 ~]$ sudo puppet cert --allow-dns-alt-names sign blramisr195602.XXXXXX.com Signed certificate request for blramisr195602.XXXXXX.com Removing file Puppet::SSL::CertificateRequest blramisr195602.XXXXXX.com at '/var/lib/puppet/ssl/ca/requests/blramisr195602.XXXXXX.com.pem' however, that doesn't help either; I get same errors as before. Not sure why in the logs it shows comparing access rules by IP and not hostname. Is there any Nginx configuration to change this behavior?
