  • Terminal server performance over high latency links

    - by holz
    Our datacenter and head office is currently in Brisbane, Australia, and we have a branch office in the UK. We have a private WAN with a 768k link to our UK office and the latency is at about 350ms. The terminal server performance is reeeeealy bad. Applications that don't have too much animation or any images seem to be okay. But as soon as they do, the session is almost unusable. Powerpoint and internet explorer are good examples of apps that make it run slow. And if there is an image in your email signature, outlook will hang for about 10 seconds each time a new line is inserted, while the image gets moved down a few pixels. We are currently running server 2003. I have tried Server 2008 R2 RDS, and also a third party solution called Blaze by a company called Ericom, but it is still not too much better. We currently have a 5 levels dynamic class of service with the priority in the following order. VoIP Video Terminal Services Printing Everything else When testing the terminal server performance, the link monitored using net-flows, and have plenty we of bandwidth available, so I believe that it is a latency issue rather than bandwidth. Is there anything that can be done to improve performance. Would citrix help at all?

  • SolidQ Journal - free SQL goodness for February

    - by Greg Low
    The SolidQ Journal for February just made it out by the end of February 28th. But again, it's great to see the content appearing. I've included the second part of the article on controlling the execution context of stored procedures. The first part was in December. Also this month, along with Fernando Guerrero's editorial, Analysis Services guru Craig Utley has written about aggregations, Herbert Albert and Gianluca Holz have continued their double-act and described how to automate database migrations,...(read more)

  • Console app showing message box on error

    - by holz
    I am trying to integrate with a vendors app by calling it with command args from c#. It is meant to automate a process that we need to do with out needing anyone to interact with the application. If there are no errors when running the process it works fine. However if there are any errors the vendors application will show a message box with the error code and error message and wait for someone to click the ok button. When the ok button is clicked it will exit the application returning the error code as the exit code. As my application is going to be a windows service on a server, needing someone to click an okay button will be an issue. Just wondering what the best solution would be to get around this. My code calling the vendor app is... ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new ProcessStartInfo(); startInfo.FileName = "someapp.exe" startInfo.Arguments = "somefile.txt"; Process jobProcess = Process.Start(startInfo); jobProcess.WaitForExit(); int exitCode = jobProcess.ExitCode;

  • Duplicate a database record with linq

    - by holz
    Is there a way to duplicate a db record with linq to sql in c#? Id [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, [Foo] [nvarchar](255) NOT NULL, [Bar] [numeric](28,12) NOT NULL, ... Given the table above, I would like to duplicate a record (but give it a different id), in a way that new fields added to the DB and the Linq dbml file at a later date will still get duplicated with out having to change that code that duplicates the record. ie I don't want to write newRecord.Foo = currentRecord.Foo; for all of the fields on the table.

  • How to create persistent static route on Mac OS X 10.6?

    - by kopobamypa
    I need to add static route on MAC OS. I found good description here Permanent Static Route Mac Os X 10.4.0 and followed the Roark Holz's (roarkh) solution. Now my problem: sometimes this solution works, sometimes does not. When it doesn't work I see these messages after boot in the Console Messages log: 06.05.10 9:34:13 com.apple.launchd[1] *** launchd[1] has started up. *** 06.05.10 9:34:46 com.apple.SystemStarter[30] Adding Static Route to 10.152 06.05.10 9:34:46 com.apple.SystemStarter[30] route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable 06.05.10 9:34:46 com.apple.SystemStarter[30] add net 10.152.0.0: gateway 192.168.1.234: Network is unreachable I want to know what is going on. How this kind of problem can be troubleshooted?
