• How to diagnose website performance/app pool recycling with Windows 2008/IIS7

  Ok, so there are various symptoms here (clients and and our own employees complaining of intermittent slowdowns, getting 'kicked out' to login page or just having a save request not properly save the submitted data). The environment: Windows Server 2008 (Datacenter), Service Pack 2, 64-bit, 2x2.8 GHz processors, 7.5 GB RAM MS SQL Server 2008 (running on the same machine) IIS 7 There are ~10 websites running on the server, each in their own application pool - most of these pools are running in Integrated mode, 2 are in Classic, all are on .NET 2.0 and all run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I'm trying to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot and am struggling with where to get more info about what could be happening. Here are some steps i have already taken: Set each application pool to recycle once per day, and removed any other automatic recycling Set a Virtual Memory Limit for each to 1024000KB (1GB) Enabled ALL 'Generate Recycle Event Log Entry' entries (Config Changes, Isapi Reported Unhealthy, Manual Recycle, Private Memory Limit Exceeded, Regular Time Interval, Request Limit Exceeded, Specific Time, Virtual Memory Limit Exceeded) I have seen the app pool processes recycle (in Task Manager) - a new one will start up, and then the first one dies off - and this has happened without the memory or time going over the settings. This is a fairly new server, and most of these came from Windows Server 2003/IIS6. Any 'next steps' for setting up information gathering, logging, diagnosing, etc. would be much appreciated! j

• Scheduled service/script/batch file to move files on condition of other files with similar filenames in same directory on windows

  On Windows Server (Data Center? 2008?), i'm trying to set up a scheduled task that will: Within a particular directory For every file in it If there exists (in the same directory) 2 files with similar names (actually the same name with extra extensions tagged on, ie. 'file1.mov' would need both 'file1.mov.flv' AND 'file1.mov.mpg' to exist), then move the file to another directory on a different disk. Following is what i have so far for a batch file, but i'm struggling. • Proper configuration for Windows SMTP Virtual Server to only send email from localhost, and tracking down source of spam emails

  We manage a server that is hosted on Amazon EC2, which has web applications that need to be able to send outgoing email. Recently we received a notice from Amazon about possible email abuse on that server, so i've been looking into it. It's Windows Server Datacenter (2003, i guess), and uses SMTP Virtual Server (you know, the one that requires IIS 6 for admin). The settings on the Access tab are as follows: - Authentication: Anonymous - Connection: Only from 3 ip addresses (127.0.0.1 and 2 others that refer to that server) - Relay: Only from 3 ip addresses (127.0.0.1 and 2 others that refer to that server) In the SMTP logs there are many entries like the following: 2012-02-08 23:43:56 64.76.125.151 OutboundConnectionCommand SMTPSVC1 FROM: 0 0 4 0 26364 SMTP - - - - 2012-02-08 23:43:56 64.76.125.151 OutboundConnectionResponse SMTPSVC1 250+ok 0 0 6 0 26536 SMTP - - - - 2012-02-08 23:43:56 64.76.125.151 OutboundConnectionCommand SMTPSVC1 TO: 0 0 4 0 26536 SMTP - - - - 2012-02-08 23:43:56 64.76.125.151 OutboundConnectionResponse SMTPSVC1 250+ok 0 0 6 0 26707 SMTP - - - - ([email protected] is sending quite a lot of emails :-/) Can anyone confirm if the SMTP server settings seem correct? I'm also wondering if a web application on the machine could be exposing a contact form or something that would allow this sort of abuse, looking into that (and how to look into that) further.

• How does rolling back an application level transaction interact with SqlDataAdapter events in ADO.NE

  When utilizing the RowUpdated event in the SqlAdapter class, i'm assuming that it is raised directly following the return of the database interaction that executes the update. If that update is part of an application level transaction (utilizing the SqlTransaction class) which is then rolled back, does this affect or interact at all with the RowUpdated event? Or is the RowUpdated event not raised until after the transaction is committed (this seems unlikely, but i couldn't find documentation)? If RowUpdated has already been raised, and then the transaction is rolled back, any good ideas on how to adjust something that may have been done in RowUpdated that should then, also be rolled back?
