  • Strange options menu behavior in Android TabActivity

    I have a TabActivity with four tabs (each is its own Activity). Each tab defines its own onCreateOptionsMenu (and in some cases, onPrepareOptionsMenu). When each tab is loaded, an AsyncTask is kicked off to retrieve the data needed to populate that tab's list. If I switch between tabs very quickly (while they're still loading) and then press the menu button (while the current tab's AsyncApiTask is still running), I'm able to get the wrong options menu to appear. For example, let's say FooActivity (tab 1) has an options menu with a "Refresh" item, and BarActivity (tab 2) has an options menu with a "View All" item. If I start the app (with tab 1 active), quickly switch to tab 2, and then hit menu, the "Refresh" item (rather than the expected "View All" item) will sometimes show. Furthermore, while this weird behavior sometimes occurs just on the first menu press (and later presses show the right items), sometimes it gets "stuck", and the wrong items show up on every press until I switch tabs. Any idea what could be going on? I haven't heard of this happening before, and haven't been able to find any good suggestions.

  • Any great books of algorithm puzzles to practice whiteboard coding with?

    I'm looking to get some practice coding solutions to algorithm puzzles on a whiteboard. A friend is going to read puzzles to me (as if he were interviewing me), and I'll solve them on a whiteboard. Does anyone know any great books with algorithm puzzles that would be useful for this? I found a book called Puzzles for Programmers and Pros, but it only has six reviews on Amazon, so I'm not sure how good it really is. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a bunch.

  • How to get NEW width/height of root layout in onConfigurationChanged?

    One of our views has a ScrollView as its root layout. When the device is rotated and onConfigurationChanged() is called, we'd like to be able to get the ScrollView's new width/height. Our code looks like this: @Override public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) { Log.d(TAG, "Width: '" + findViewById(R.id.scrollview).getWidth() + "'"); Log.d(TAG, "Height: '" + findViewById(R.id.scrollview).getHeight() + "'"); super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig); Log.d(TAG, "Width: '" + findViewById(R.id.scrollview).getWidth() + "'"); Log.d(TAG, "Height: '" + findViewById(R.id.scrollview).getHeight() + "'"); } And the relevant section of our AndroidManifest.xml looks like this: <activity android:name=".SomeActivity" android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> </intent-filter> </activity> On our Droid, we expected to see the ScrollView's width go to 854 when switched into landscape, and to 480 when switched back to portrait (and the height do the equivalent switch, minus the menu bar). However, we're seeing the opposite. Is there something we're doing wrong? We could get hacky and solve this, but I feel like there's a simple solution that we're missing.

  • List of fundamental data structures - what am I missing?

    I've been studying my fundamental data structures a bunch recently, trying to make sure I've got them down cold. By "fundamental", I mean the real basic ones. Fancy ones like Red-Black Trees and Bloom Filters are clearly worth knowing, but they're usually either enhancements of fundamental ones (Red-Black Trees are binary search trees with special properties to keep them balanced) or they're only useful in very specific situations (Bloom Filters). So far, I'm "fluent" in the following data structures: Arrays Linked Lists Stacks/Queues Binary Search Trees Heaps/Priority Queues Hash Tables However, I feel like I'm missing something. Are there any fundamental ones that I'm forgetting about? EDIT: Added these after posting the question Strings (suggested by catchmeifyoutry) Sets (suggested by Peter) Graphs (suggested by Nick D and aJ) B-Trees (Suggested by tloach) I'm a little on-the-fence about whether these are too fancy or not, but I think they're different enough from the fundamental structures (and important enough) to be worth studying as fundamental.

  • How to properly implement the Strategy pattern in a web MVC framework?

    In my Django app, I have a model (lets call it Foo) with a field called "type". I'd like to use Foo.type to indicate what type the specific instance of Foo is (possible choices are "Number", "Date", "Single Line of Text", "Multiple Lines of Text", and a few others). There are two things I'd like the "type" field to end up affecting; the way a value is converted from its normal type to text (for example, in "Date", it may be str(the_date.isoformat())), and the way a value is converted from text to the specified type (in "Date", it may be datetime.date.fromtimestamp(the_text)). To me, this seems like the Strategy pattern (I may be completely wrong, and feel free to correct me if I am). My question is, what's the proper way to code this in a web MVC framework? In a client-side app, I'd create a Type class with abstract methods "serialize()" and "unserialize()", override those methods in subclasses of Type (such as NumberType and DateType), and dynamically set the "type" field of a newly-instantiated Foo to the appropriate Type subclass at runtime. In a web framework, it's not quite as straightforward for me. Right now, the way that makes the most sense is to define Foo.type as a Small Integer field and define a limited set of choices (0 = "Number", 1 = "Date", 2 = "Single Line of Text", etc.) in the code. Then, when a Foo object is instantiated, use a Factory method to look at the value of the instance's "type" field and plug in the correct Type subclass (as described in the paragraph above). Foo would also have serialize() and unserialize() methods, which would delegate directly to the plugged-in Type subclass. How does this design sound? I've never run into this issue before, so I'd really like to know if other people have, and how they've solved it.
