I want to install it on /opt directory. Before install the driver, i want to copy the driver folder from /home/kevin to /opt. I try to use ordinary copy (Right Click Copy Paste), but the paste is blured. After that, i tried using this on terminal: sudo cp /home/kevin/compat-wireless-3.5-3 /opt But i get this command: cp: omitting directory `home/kevin/compat-wireless-3.5-3' What does the command mean? I can't copy the driver until now.

  • Why We Write #6-An Interview with Kevin Kline

    - by drsql
Wow, so far in this series, I have interviewed some very good friends, and some truly excellent writers (and usually both), but today, following on the heels of Jason Strate , we are going to hit someone whose name is synonymous with community, a person who really needs no introduction. According to Bing, Kevin Kline ( @kekline ) is the most important Kevin Kline on Twitter (though it clearly could be due to my typical searches, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt… here try it yourself: http://www.bing.com/search?q=kevin+kline+twitter...(read more)

  • SQLBeat Podcast – Episode 5 – Kevin Kline Talks With Me About SQL, Professional Development and Book Writin’

    - by SQLBeat
I thought I would be a ball of intimated nerves when Kevin gladly agreed to speak with me on the podcast this past weekend.  After all, he is Kevin Kline of SQL in a Nutshell fame! As it turned out,  we had a comfortable and enlightening conversation on Apple MacBooks (is that what they are called?), our beginnings in the indistry, the Deep South, health care intiatives and 286′s. I almost pulled the plug when Kevin started down the Oracle path though, and for a moment he looked at me as if I was serious. As always on this podcast, it is all in good fun. The picture is of Kevin and I ( my shirt is mauve not pink by the way) at the after party for SQL Saturday 151 in Orlando, FL where he also did a Pre-Con to a sold out crowd of enthusiastic DBAs. I know they were enthusiastic even though I was not there because one of the attendees was a friend of mine who went on and on and on about the content, kind of like I am doing here.  So I will just stop that and let you proceed to listen. As always, I hope you enjoy and any feedback on this or future episodes is always welcome. Download the MP3

    - by OTN ArchBeat
Here's a tip of the ArchBeat hat to business intelligence expert Kevin McGinley for his recent confirmation as an Oracle ACE Director. The video above was recorded at Oracle OpenWorld 2013 (a few weeks before his ACED confirmation) when I had a chance to ask Kevin about recent projects and challenges, and about the business intelligence video series he produces with fellow BI whiz Steward Bryson. Kevin is a very sharp guy and I'm sure you'll enjoy this short interview. Want to learn more about the Oracle ACE Program? Click here.

  • Deploying Django App with Nginx, Apache, mod_wsgi

    - by JCWong
    I have a django app which can run locally using the standard development environment. I want to now move this to EC2 for production. The django documentation suggests running with apache and mod_wsgi, and using nginx for loading static files. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on an Ec2 box. My Django app, "ddt", contains a subdirectory "apache" with ddt.wsgi import os, sys apache_configuration= os.path.dirname(__file__) project = os.path.dirname(apache_configuration) workspace = os.path.dirname(project) sys.path.append(workspace) sys.path.append('/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/django/') sys.path.append('/home/jeffrey/www/ddt/') os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = 'ddt.settings' import django.core.handlers.wsgi application = django.core.handlers.wsgi.WSGIHandler() I have mod_wsgi installed from apt. My apache/httpd.conf contains NameVirtualHost *:8080 WSGIScriptAlias / /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/ddt.wsgi WSGIPythonPath /home/jeffrey/www/ddt <Directory /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/> <Files ddt.wsgi> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Files> </Directory> Under apache2/sites-enabled <VirtualHost *:8080> ServerName www.mysite.com ServerAlias mysite.com <Directory /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> LogLevel warn ErrorLog /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/apache_error.log CustomLog /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/apache_access.log combined WSGIDaemonProcess datadriventrading.com user=www-data group=www-data threads=25 WSGIProcessGroup datadriventrading.com WSGIScriptAlias / /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/ddt.wsgi </VirtualHost> If I am correct, these 3 files above should correctly allow my django app to run on port 8080. I have the following nginx/proxy.conf file proxy_redirect off; proxy_set_header Host $host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; client_max_body_size 10m; client_body_buffer_size 128k; proxy_connect_timeout 90; proxy_send_timeout 90; proxy_read_timeout 90; proxy_buffer_size 4k; proxy_buffers 4 32k; proxy_busy_buffers_size 64k; proxy_temp_file_write_size 64k; Under nginx/sites-enabled server { listen 80; server_name www.mysite.com mysite.com; access_log /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/nginx_access.log; error_log /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/nginx_error.log; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; include /etc/nginx/proxy.conf; } location /media/ { root /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/; } } If I am correct these two files should setup nginx to take requests on the HTTP port 80, but then direct requests to apache which is running the django app on port 8080. If i go to mysite.com, all I see is Welcome to Nginx! Any advice for how to debug this?

It proxys to port 8080 which is where the Django app lives server { listen 80; server_name www.foo.com foo.com; access_log /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/nginx_access.log; error_log /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/logs/nginx_error.log; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; include /etc/nginx/proxy.conf; } location /media/ { root /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/; } location /static/ { root /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/; } location /public/ { root /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/; } } I'd like to have a wordpress blog run on the same server. Apache is listening to port 8080 with this http.conf file NameVirtualHost *:8080 WSGIScriptAlias / /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/ddt.wsgi WSGIPythonPath /home/jeffrey/www/ddt <Directory /home/jeffrey/www/ddt/apache/> <Files ddt.wsgi> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Files> </Directory> I added my Wordpress site using a virtualhost <VirtualHost *:8080> ServerName www.bar.com ServerAlias bar.com DocumentRoot /home/jeffrey/www/jeffrey_wp </VirtualHost> When I go to bar.com I still see my django app. Is it possible for these two sites to run on the same server?

  • Error processing Spree sample images - file not recognized by identify command in paperclip geometry.rb:29

    - by purpletonic
I'm getting an error when I run the Spree sample data. It occurs when Spree tries to load in the product data, specifically the product images. Here's the error I'm getting: * Execute db:load_file loading ruby <GEM DIR>/sample/lib/tasks/../../db/sample/spree/products.rb -- Processing image: ror_tote.jpeg rake aborted! /var/folders/91/63kgbtds2czgp0skw3f8190r0000gn/T/ror_tote.jpeg20121007-21549-2rktq1 is not recognized by the 'identify' command. <GEM DIR>/paperclip-2.7.1/lib/paperclip/geometry.rb:31:in `from_file' <GEM DIR>/spree/core/app/models/spree/image.rb:35:in `find_dimensions' I've made sure ImageMagick is installed correctly, as previously I was having problems with it. Here's the output I'm getting when running the identify command directly. $ identify Version: ImageMagick 6.7.7-6 2012-10-06 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2012 ImageMagick Studio LLC Features: OpenCL ... other usage info omitted ... I also used pry with the pry-debugger and put a breakpoint in geometry.rb inside of Paperclip. Here's what that section of geometry.rb looks like: # Uses ImageMagick to determing the dimensions of a file, passed in as either a # File or path. # NOTE: (race cond) Do not reassign the 'file' variable inside this method as it is likely to be # a Tempfile object, which would be eligible for file deletion when no longer referenced. def self.from_file file file_path = file.respond_to?(:path) ? file.path : file raise(Errors::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError.new("Cannot find the geometry of a file with a blank name")) if file_path.blank? geometry = begin silence_stream(STDERR) do binding.pry Paperclip.run("identify", "-format %wx%h :file", :file => "#{file_path}[0]") end rescue Cocaine::ExitStatusError "" rescue Cocaine::CommandNotFoundError => e raise Errors::CommandNotFoundError.new("Could not run the `identify` command. Please install ImageMagick.") end parse(geometry) || raise(Errors::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError.new("#{file_path} is not recognized by the 'identify' command.")) end At the point of my binding.pry statement, the file_path variable is set to the following: file_path => "/var/folders/91/63kgbtds2czgp0skw3f8190r0000gn/T/ror_tote.jpeg20121007-22732-1ctl1g1" I've also double checked that this exists, by opening my finder in this directory, and opened it with preview app; and also that the program can run identify by running %x{identify} in pry, and I receive the same version Version: ImageMagick 6.7.7-6 2012-10-06 Q16 as before. Removing the additional digits (is this a timestamp?) after the file extension and running the Paperclip.run command manually in Pry gives me a different error: Cocaine::ExitStatusError: Command 'identify -format %wx%h :file' returned 1. Expected 0 I've also tried manually updating the Paperclip gem in Spree to 3.0.2 and still get the same error. So, I'm not really sure what else to try. Is there still something incorrect with my ImageMagick setup?

  • Eclipse dissapears when minimized and will not come back (12.04 Unity)

    - by Kevin
I have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 running Unity3d. I downloaded Eclipse from eclipse.org (not the software center) and created a desktop using gnome-desktop-item-edit. The resulting file is below, and I added it to the launcher on the left of the screen by dragging that file on. #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_US]=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm Name[en_US]=Eclipse Exec=/home/kevin/eclipse/eclipse Name=Eclipse Icon=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open However, when I minimize eclipse, eclipse disappears. There is no arrow to the left of the icon in the launcher like usual. And when I click on the launcher again, it tries to relaunch eclipse instead of bringing back the one that was minimized. Eclipse also does not show up when I alt-tab. I know it is still running because I can see it running with the system monitor. Note that Eclipse works properly until it is minimized. I have observed this behavior on two different computers now. Does anyone know how to fix it?

  • How can I get Ubuntu 12.04 to boot on a Gigabyte 990Fx MB (efi problem?)

    - by Jeffrey
I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a home made system with a gigabyte 990Fxa MB. I can make it through the install process. It does not boot. Windows 7 does boot on the same machine. Suse 11.4 boots on the same machine. Suse 12.4 does not boot. I think there may be an issue with the EFI / GPT system. I know very little about these systems. I really expected the machine to boot. What can I do to get the system to boot? Please direct me to a path to trouble shoot this problem. thanks Jeffrey

  • What is the relation between database books by Ullman et al.?

    - by macias
A First Course in Database Systems by Jeffrey D. Ullman, Jennifer Widom (Amazon links) Database System Implementation by Hector Garcia-Molina, Jeffrey D. Ullman, Jennifer D. Widom Database Systems: The Complete Book by Hector Garcia-Molina, Jeffrey D. Ullman, Jennifer Widom As far as I know the second one is the second "part" of the first one. But what about the third one -- is it just first+second published in one volume? I would like to buy them, but I don't want to get redundant reading. Thank you in advance for clarification.

  • Removing mdadm array and converting to regular disks while preserving data

    - by Jeffrey Kevin Pry
I have a 6 disk (2TB each) mdadm RAID 5 volume created in Ubuntu 12.04 Server. However, I'm moving to a different solution and want to "unraid" my disks but keep the data. Only 50% is in use. From what I can surmise I basically have to do this recursively for each physical disk. Fail the disk Format the failed disk Move a portion of files to the new disk. Reshape the array Shrink the logical volume md0 This seems like a very time consuming process. Is there an easier way to do this (automatically perhaps) without buying new disks to temporarily hold the data? I am also aware that during this processing my RAID volume will be degraded and vulnerable the entire time. I am not too concerned about this and will be using battery backup and moving the most important files off first. Thank you for your help!

  • is there any easy way to auto generated code like this?

    - by Kevin Yang
i have a file which will be used across many app projects. the only difference of these files is the webserice referrence name. code like this: public void Test(){ Kevin.ServiceReference1.Service1Client client = new Kevin.ServiceReference1.Service1Client(); // do something.... } like code above, the 'Kevin.ServiceReference1' will be replace by specified app project namespace. so, according to DRY(dont repeat yourself), i shouldn't just copy the file to many projects and rename the specified part manually. is there any way i can easily replace some parts of my template file to something related to the project?

  • accessing values in two dimensional arrays

    - by BrainLikeADullPencil
    In some code I'm trying to learn from, the Maze string below is turned into an array (code not shown for that) and saved in the instance variable @maze. The starting point of the Maze is represented by the letter 'A' in that Maze, which can be accessed at @maze[1][13]---row 1, column 13. However, the code I'm looking at uses @maze[1][13,1] to get the A, which you can see returns the same result in my console. If I do @maze[1][13,2], it returns the letter "A " with two blank spaces next to it, and so on. [13,3] returns "A " with three blank spaces. Does the 2 in [13,2] mean, "return two values starting at [1][13]? If so, why? Is this some feature of arrays or two dimensional arrays that I don't get? [20] pry(#<Maze>):1> @maze[1][13] => "A" [17] pry(#<Maze>):1> @maze[1][13,1] => "A" [18] pry(#<Maze>):1> @maze[1][13,2] => "A " [19] pry(#<Maze>):1> @maze[1][13,3] => "A " Maze String MAZE1 = %{##################################### # # # #A # # # # # # # # # ####### # ### # ####### # # # # # # # # # # # ##### # ################# # ####### # # # # # # # # # ##### ##### ### ### # ### # # # # # # # # # # # # B# # # # # # # # ##### ##### # # ### # # ####### # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ### ### # # # # ##### # # # ##### # # # # # # # # #####################################}

  • Oracle at ASMC PDI 2012

    - by jeffrey.waterman
Recently, I had the pleasure of representing Oracle at the American Society of Military Comptrollers National Professional Development Institute (PDI).  The PDI is the premier training event for resource managers in the Department of Defense and US Coast Guard.  Each year they assemble top presenters and key note speakers to convey their experiences and share the upcoming goals and vision for the Defense Department's financial and resource management community.  This year, the common themes were centered around 'auditability' and 'efficiency'.   What is auditability?  There were many definitions/themes tossed around, but to summarize my notes, it boiled down to:- the proper tracking of funds- audit readiness- proper controls- proper documentation There were sessions regarding entire programs focused on the need for auditability.  For example, FIAR: Financial Improvement and Audit Readiness (http://comptroller.defense.gov/fiar/index.html)   The FIAR stresses the "...improve(ment of) the Department's financial processes, controls and information." The entire conference, one set of solutions kept popping into my head around, "how can Oracle's solutions assist the Department of Defense", or any other Federal Agency, improve their financial processes and controls?   One answer came to mind:  Oracle Governance, Risk, and Compliance Management. Commonly referred to as "GRC". Let me summarize the main components around Oracle's GRC solution: GRC Manager: This solution is the central repository for documenting business processes, policies, and established controls.  All identified risks and issues are documented within the repository as well as action plans necessary for mitigation. GRC Controls:  This solution consists of a set of tools which are embedded with your ERP (financial, human resource, supply chain, etc.) applications to detect, prevent, and/or enforce the policies and procedures established by your Agency.  Components of the solution include:- Application Access Control Governor: a robust tool for managing application roles and responsibilities; simplify segregation of duty maintenance- Configuration Controls Governor: complete audit trail for changes made to configurations- Transactions Control Governor: track violations of internal controls; alert management to suspicious activities; be warned when high dollar transactions are occurring on an irregular basis; - Preventative Controls Governor: prevent sensitive information from being viewed by unauthorized parties; enforce field, block, and form change control If you are in the financial or resource management community and are concerned about auditability within your organization I suggest you follow up this post by reading about Oracle's GRC solutions.  www.oracle.com/grc Please feel free to follow up with thought and questions in the comments section below.  Also, if you have a topic you would like addressed in this blog, just drop me a note at jeffrey[email protected]  or leave the suggestion in the comment section as well. • VirtualHosts Stopped Working

    - by Kevin C.
I'm working on a website and have WAMP setup for local testing. Usually I set up virtual hosts using httpd-vhosts + the hosts file without a hitch. All of a sudden, my virtual hosts are no longer working. I know that it's pointing to Apache because I get a '403 Forbidden' error, but that's about it. All of my previously working virtual hosts no longer work as well. Anybody know what's going on? httpd-vhosts.conf <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot "C:\Documents and Settings\kevin\Desktop\websites\fusion" ServerName ebrochures ErrorLog "logs/your_own-error.log" CustomLog "logs/your_own-access.log" common <directory "C:\Documents and Settings\kevin\Desktop\websites\fusion"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AllowOverride all Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.1 </directory> hosts file: 127.0.0.1 fusion And yes, I am including the virtual hosts file in my httpd.conf file: # Virtual hosts Include conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf

  • How to make software development decisions based on facts

    - by Laila
We love to hear stories about the many and varied ways our customers use the tools that we develop, but in our earnest search for stories and feedback, we'd rather forgotten that some of our keenest users are fellow RedGaters, in the same building. It was almost by chance that we discovered how the SQL Source Control team were using SmartAssembly. As it happens, there is a separate account (here on Simple-Talk) of how SmartAssembly was used to support the Early Access program; by providing answers to specific questions about how the SQL Source Control product was used. But what really got us all grinning was how valuable the SQL Source Control team found the reports that SmartAssembly was quickly and painlessly providing. So gather round, my friends, and I'll tell you the Tale Of The Framework Upgrade . <strange mirage effect to denote a flashback. A subtle background string of music starts playing in minor key> Kevin and his team were undecided. They weren't sure whether they could move their software product from .NET 2 to .NET 3.5 , let alone to .NET 4. You see, they were faced with having to guess what version of .NET was already installed on the average user's machine, which I'm sure you'll agree is no easy task. Upgrading their code to .NET 3.5 might put a barrier to people trying the tool, which was the last thing Kevin wanted: "what if our users have to download X, Y, and Z before being able to open the application?" he asked. That fear of users having to do half an hour of downloads (.followed by at least ten minutes of installation. followed by a five minute restart) meant that Kevin's team couldn't take advantage of WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). This made them sad, because WCF would have allowed them to write their code in a much simpler way, and in hours instead of days (as was the case with .NET 2). Oh sure, they had a gut feeling that this probably wasn't the case, 3.5 had been out for so many years, but they weren't sure. <background music switches to major key> SmartAssembly Feature Usage Reporting gave Kevin and his team exactly what they needed: hard data on their users' systems, both hardware and software. I was there, I saw it happen, and that's not the sort of thing a woman quickly forgets. I'll always remember his last words (before he went to lunch): "You get lots of free information by just checking a box in SmartAssembly" is what he said. For example, they could see how many CPU cores their customers were using, and found out that they should be making use of parallelism to take advantage of available cores. But crucially, (and this is the moral of my tale, dear reader), Kevin saw that 99% of SQL Source Control's users were on .NET 3.5 or above.   So he knew that they could make the switch and that is was safe to do so. With this reassurance, they could use WCF to not only make development easier, but to also give them a really nice way to do inter-process communication between the Source Control and the SQL Compare products. To have done that on .NET 2.0 was certainly possible <knowing chuckle>, but Microsoft have made it a lot easier with WCF. <strange mirage effect to denote end of flashback> So you see, with Feature Usage Reporting, they finally got the hard evidence they needed to safely make the switch to .NET 3.5, knowing it would not inconvenience their users. And that, my friends, is just the sort of thing we like to hear.

  • Is Oracle Policy Automation a Fit for My Agency? I'll bet it is.

This paper is certain to become a must read for any customer interested in rules automation. What is OPA?  If you are not sitting in your favorite Greek restaurant waiting for that order of Saganaki to appear, OPA is Oracle’s solution for automated streamlining, standardizing, and the maintenance of policy. It is a specialized rules platform that simplifies the automation of rules and policies, putting the analysis in the hands of the analysts, not the IT organization. In other words, OPA allows the organization to be more efficient by eliminating (or at a minimum, reducing the engagement of) the middle man from the process. The whitepaper I mention above is titled, “Is Oracle Policy Automation a Good Fit for My Business?”. This short document walks the reader through use cases and advice for the reader to consider when deciding if OPA is right for their agency. The paper outlines many different scenarios, different uses of OPA in production today and, where OPA may not be a good fit. Many of the use case examples revolve around end user questionnaires or analyst research. What is often overlooked is OPA’s ability to act as a rules engine behind the scenes. That is, take inputs from one source (e.g., personnel data), process that data in OPA and send the output (e.g., pay data with benefits deductions) to a second source. The rules have been automated, no necessary human intervention to perform analysis. A few of my customers have used the embedded OPA solution to improve transaction processing and reduce the time spent analyzing exceptions. I suggest any reader whose organization is reliant on or deals with high complexity, volume or volatility in rules that are based on documentation – or which need to be documented – take a look at Oracle Policy Automation. You can find the white paper on Oracle Technology Network. You can find the white paper in the Oracle Policy Automation of the OTN. You can find more information around OPA on oracle.com. Finally, you can send me a question any time at jeffrey[email protected] Thank you for reading. If you have any topics around Oracle Applications in the Federal or Public Sector industries you would like to see addressed in this blog, please leave suggestions in the comments section and I will do my best to address in a future post.
