  • Ubuntu 12.04 suddenly will not boot after compiz crash on lockscreen

    Yesterday i went to work and closed my laptop. When i got home I couldn't get the lock screen to come back up. ctrl+alt+f2 to get to a terminal and Tried to kill compiz, compiz was not running so I tried to restart it got an error opening the display so i tried to restart lightdm again couldn't open display. so I restarted and now I am stuck on the loading screen. I tried booting in recovery mode and all options hang except root, but i'm stuck with read only. booting from a live cd I can mount the drive but again stuck with read only. I'm completely stuck here. checking my default-display-manager returns "/usr/sbin/elsa" as the only line and can't edit it. I've got an 11.10 live cd and my /home is encrypted so i can't try to back anything up at the moment either. How can i resolve this or at the least back up some of my data? Please help!

  • Switch keyborad layout hotkeys don't work on lockscreen

    I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 which has a known bug that makes it impossible to change keyboard layout via Alt+Shift. I installed this patch which made it possible to switch layouts again. The problem I'm facing now is that it is still impossible to switch keyboard layout when I lock (Ctrl+Alt+L) system and press Alt+Shift. This way if I lock system with wrong layout enabled, I can't switch it to enter the password and unlock PC. I can still change layout by clicking on the layout indicator. I'll be thankful for suggestions on solving this.

  • Snow Leopard doesn't repair permissions, despite showing / saying its fixed them?

    Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?   • How do I use a theme for my lockscreen?

    I have the "autumn colors in japan" theme and would like the lockscreen to use the same backgrounds. Specifically - what I want to do is make my lock screen use the same background as the theme I chose through Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Personalization. Currently it's set to Autumn Color in Japan. Do I have to locate the images and set them manually or is there a way to get the lockscreen to use the background I have for the desktop, set by my theme?

    So, both windows and linux have a pretty useful feature that allows you to leave everything running on the PC while also keeping invaders away by locking the screen. My question is: Say I leave my laptop with the screen locked while I go get a donnut, and then it gets stolen. Assuming the thief has access to whatever software he needs, how easy/hard would it be for him to access my (currently logged-in) account? Now let me be clear. I'm not asking if he can access the data on the harddrive. I know he can, and that issue would go under data encryption, which is not my question here. I'm focusing on how hard would it be to get around the "Insert Password" screen, and have full access to my account. I'm looking for answers regarding both OS's; but, if needed, assume Ubuntu.   • Android Activity is displayed after user unlocks the screen

    Hi, I was wondering if anyone understood how to make your application be displayed when you unlock the screen. I have an application where the user turns on a Bluetooth device, it connects to the phone, and the user should be presented with a UI. Having them hunt for the app or using the notification menu is not a workable option (too much work and not the obvious behavior). The problem is that: When the screen is unlocked: - you can popup the activity from the background service when Bluetooth connects to a device - User is happy because the UI is right there When the screen is locked: - The application gets started but is destroyed - User unlocks the phone and nothing is there but the homescreen One work around would be to disable the keyguard when the application gets woken up but the nuclear option is a pretty bad option. PS: I know the standard Android assumption is that you shouldn't do this. In the normal case this behavior is fine, but in this case I explicitly did something I want the phone to respond without adding more work for the user to do. As per Google's guidelines if you don't like this behavior there can be an option for you to turn this off or you can not use the application.

  • MediaElement seems to disable lock screen when playing a video

    I am working on an application that plays a video using the MediaElement component. Now, I would like that if the user is idle, the lock screen appears, as configured by the user in the Settings of the device. If I don't play a video, the lock screen indeed appears. But, when a video is playing no lock screen appears. I cannot find any information on this. Currently I set the idle detection modes like this: PhoneApplicationService.Current.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Enabled; PhoneApplicationService.Current.UserIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Enabled; I am a bit lost now. The only solution I can think of is running a timer myself and stop the video playback after a certain time. (but there seems to be no API calls to receive the configured lock timeout.)     I am developing an iPhone app that need to display some message on lock screen. I have tried to use local notification or CFUserNotification but neither of them can display the message on top of the lock screen. For CFUserNotification I have tried kCFUserNotificationAlertTopMostKey (refer this similar question) but it still not work. I am not going to hook springboard since my phone is not jailbreak. I have found an app do implement it and I have tested on my none-jailbreak iPhone iOS 6.0, don't know how to implement this. Any help much appreciated.

When I enter my password and unlock it, I am presented with the Cinnamon 2 lock screen and I have to enter my password again. How can I disable the Cinnamon 2 lock screen?     I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured.     According to the screen manual (version 4.0.2.) C-a x C-a C-x (lockscreen) Lock this terminal. C-a X (remove) Kill the current region. But what actually happens when I use it (Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06): C-a X locks the terminal and asks me for the password. When I enter the correct passwword, I am back in screen but the region is killed (wtf) C-a x does nothing apparently Please note the differences between x (lowercase) and X (uppercase). Why is there a mixup between the functionalities of C-a X and C-a x? How can I fix this? I am on CentOS release 5 (Final).

  • How to change image and disable UIBarButtonItem

    I have a NavigationBar app with two views: a parent and a sub view. In the sub view I'm adding a button to the right corner as follows: - (void)viewDidLoad { UIBarButtonItem *tempButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"lock-unlocked.png"] style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(lockScreen)]; self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = tempButton; [tempButton release]; } When that button is clicked I want to change the image of this rightBarButtonItem and disable the leftBarButtonItem (which was added automatically by the controller). Basically have two states of a button, locked and unlocked. Question 1: The only way I can find how to change the image is to create a new UIButtonItem with a new image and replace rightBarButtonItem with that new one. But I'm wondering if there's a way to just change the image without creating a new UIBarButtonItem. Am I creating a memory leak if I keep creating new UIBarButtonItem? Question 2: How can I get a hold of self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem and disable/enable it? I don't create that one manually, it's created automatically for me by the controller. I don't see any method/property on UIBarButtonItem to enable/disable user interaction with it.
