• Load balancing a Windows File Share using HA-Proxy

  After pulling my hair out over DFS I just had this weird and potentially dangerous idea come into my head whereby, just possibly, I might be able to use HA-Proxy to load balance a file share between servers. I've done some remedial packet traces and it does appear that TCP port 445 is the only thing involved in using Windows file sharing. I've always thought for many years that UDP 139, 135 etc were also involved in at least establishing the connection - but apparently not! So I setup a basic test: listen SMBTest *:445 mode tcp server Smb1 172.16.61.201:445 server Smb2 172.16.61.202:445 And you'll never guess what... it works??? (!) Now obviously there is the whole concern about synchronisation between the file servers (of course). That could easily be taken care of with a little bit of Robocopy script. And considering I only need a HA read-only file share there wouldn't be any issues with regard to file locking etc. Can anyone tell me if what I'm playing with here is fire? I really didn't think it would work at all and now I'm a little shocked. What would be the downsides? Could this be relied upon for a production environment?

• Windows Media Player crashes on startup after CPU upgrade

  I upgraded my CPU, reactivated Windows Vista etc. But WMP has stopped working. It just crashes almost immediately after starting up. If I look in Event Viewer it mentions the source as being "Indiv01.key". I have searched my OS drive for this file but it does not exist anywhere. Some Googling has revealed it seems to be a common problem and that it is DRM related. Though there doesn't seem to be any concrete solution. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Keepalived takes several minutes to recover in a particular situation

  I've setup Keepalived for a master-slave style virtual IP and it seems to work well. Both are hosted in almost identical VMs. If I "pause" the VM that is running the Master. The Slave will take over, as expected, almost instantly. However if I then "unpause" the VM that runs the Master. The virtual IP will stop responding the pings. And it takes a good 4 or 5 minutes for it to start pinging again. It seems to be getting desynchronised due to the nature of the way I'm testing it (by pausing/unpausing the VMs). I admit that pausing and unpausing VMs is a slightly dodgy way to test this. But it has raised a concern for me that there could be other scenarios that cause the same undesirable behaviour. Is this expected / by design? Is there anything I can do to the config to improve it? Thanks.

• Sending e-mail on behalf of our customer(s), with Postfix

  We send e-mail on behalf of our customers, via our own SMTP services. It's always been a problem for us because usually our "spoofing" of their source address results in the mails being caught in spam traps. This hasn't been a problem in the past due to the small volume and low importance of these mails that we sent. However this requirement has recently changed and we need to fix this issue. We realise that fundamentally our application is sending e-mail incorrectly, as per this post: Send email on behalf of clients However, we would like to resolve the problem at the SMTP server level. We have deployed a server running Postfix. Is it possible to have Postfix automatically adjust the mail headers so that we get this "Sent on behalf of" behaviour? I figure it should just be a case of Postfix noticing that the FROM address is the spoofed (i.e. a domain that is not mentioned in its config anywhere) and therefore inject/replace the appropriate headers to get the desired effect. • Reinject dependencies of a freshly deserialized object

  If a program has literally just deserialized an object (doesn't really matter how, but just say BinaryFormatter was used). What is a good design to use for re-injecting the dependencies of this object? Is there a common pattern for this? I suppose I would need to wrap the Deserialize() method up to act as a factory inside the container. Thanks!

• TFS get command erroneously returns "All files are up to date."

  We are just in the process of migrating our TFS repo to Mercurial as we've had enough of TFS. Unfortunately TFS has thrown us one last curve ball before it lets us go. We've wrote a script that we intend to have "get" each changeset (including timestamp, check-in comment etc) and then add them to the Mercurial repo and check it in. Unfortunately TFS is acting very strange when we execute the tf get * /version:C111 /overwrite command. It immediately returns "All files are up to date." But this is impossible. The workspace folder is empty! And viewing the details for the 111 changeset quite clearly shows that the changeset contains "stuff" i.e. the repo is certainly not empty. What could be causing this?
