  • Rails Association issue with NoMethodError in event_controller

    - by pmanning
Kinda a noob trying to understand I think I need to define rsvps but not sure what to put... I'm trying to add a Join/Unjoin button to user created Events, similar to a Follow/Unfollow button for Users. • NoMethodError in UsersController#create

    - by Mike DeVerna
I'm getting stuck on an error I'm getting when signing up a new user in Michael Hart's Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I'm new to rails but I've been searching for hours and can't seem to find anything to figure out the issue. My initial thought is that it's specific to the following line: redirect_to @user This is my file for users_controller.rb #!/bin/env ruby # encoding: utf-8 class UsersController < ApplicationController def show @user = User.find(params[:id]) end def new @user = User.new end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save flash[:success] = "Welcome to the Sample App!" ?????????????? redirect_to @user else render 'new' end end end This is the error message I get: NoMethodError in UsersController#create undefined method `??????????????' for # Rails.root: /Users/mikedeverna/Documents/rails_projects/sample_app Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace app/controllers/users_controller.rb:18:in `create' Here is the code in my routes.rb file: SampleApp::Application.routes.draw do resources :users resources :sessions, only: [:new, :create, :destroy] root to: 'static_pages#home' match '/signup', to: 'users#new' match '/signin', to: 'sessions#new' match '/signout', to: 'sessions#destroy', via: :delete match '/help', to: 'static_pages#help' match '/about', to: 'static_pages#about' match '/contact', to: 'static_pages#contact'

  • Scaffolding Extensions: NoMethodError

    - by marienbad
Not sure if many people are familiar with Scaffolding Extensions for Ruby, but I've looked through their docs, forums, and even the source code of the Heroku test site, and not found an answer. I made a basic Sinatra app and followed right from the RDoc's instructions: require 'scaffolding_extensions' require 'sinatra/base' class Thingy < Sinatra::Base scaffold_all_models end gives undefined method 'scaffold_all_models' for Thingy:Class (NoMethodError) and I know Scaffolding Extensions is loadable because I can successfully set some config variables in its classes.

  • Confused about NoMethodError in Ruby

    - by E L
In a simple Ruby example, I'm getting an error that does not occur in irb. name = "Joe" def say_hi "\"Hi there!\" said #{self}" end response = name.say_hi puts response This code should return, "Hi there!" said Joe. It works perfectly fine in irb. However, when I attempt to put the same code in a file and run the file, I get this error: say_hi.rb:8:in `<main>': private method `say_hi' called for "Joe":String (NoMethodError) Any suggestion about why this happens?

  • NoMethodError when trying to invoke helper method from Rails controller

    - by John Topley
I'm getting a NoMethodError when trying to access a method defined in one of my helper modules from one of my controller classes. My Rails application uses the helper class method with the :all symbol as shown below: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base helper :all . . end My understanding is that this should make all of my controller classes automatically include all of the helper modules within the app/helpers directory, therefore mixing in all of the methods into the controllers. Is this correct? If I explicitly include the helper module within the controller then everything works correctly.

  • NoMethodError using Memcached Sinatra-style

    - by sevennineteen
I've just installed Memcached on my Mac and updated my Sinatra app configuration as described in Heroku's documentation, but I'm getting a NoMethodError when trying to use the hash-based syntax they specify: >> CACHE['color'] = 'blue' >> CACHE['color'] Using explicit get and set methods as below seems to work fine. >> CACHE.set('color', 'blue') >> CACHE.get('color') If necessary I can use the latter syntax, but the former seems more elegant. I haven't tested this on Heroku's environment since I'd like whatever implementation I use to work on my local environment as well. Thanks!

  • NoMethodError when using .where (eager fetching)

    - by Ethan Leroy
I have the following model classes... class Image < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :description, :title has_many :imageTags has_many :tags, :through => :imageTags end class Tag < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :name has_many :imageTags has_many :images, :through => :imageTags end class ImageTag < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :position belongs_to :image belongs_to :tag end And when I use find for getting the Tag with the id 1 t = Tag.find(1); @images = t.images; But when I do the same with where, I get a NoMethodError, with the description undefined method 'images': t = Tag.where(:name => "foo"); @images = t.images; I also tried adding .includes(:images) before the .where statement, but that doesn't work too. So, how can I get all Images that belong to a Tag?

  • Rails NoMethodError in loop when method exists

    - by Kevin Whitaker
Good day all. I'm running into a bit of a problem getting a script running on my production environment, even though it works just fine on my dev box. I've verified that all the requisite gems and such are the same version. I should mention that the script is intended to be run with the script/runner command. Here is a super-condensed version of what I'm trying to do, centered around the part that's broken: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end markets = Market.find(all) markets.each do |market| deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject end Now convertToTimeZone is a method attached to the model. So, this code works just fine on my dev machine, as stated. However, attempting to run it on my production machine results in: undefined method `subject' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) If, however, I go into the console on the production box and do this: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end market = Market.find(1) deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject It returns the correct value, no problem. So what is going on? This is on rails v 2.3.5, on both machines. Thanks for any help

  • NoMethodError / undefined method `foobar_path' when using form_for

I've searched around for similar questions but none of the solutions have worked for me. Help?

  • Rails "NoMethodError" with sub-resources

    - by Tchock
Hi. I'm a newbie Rails developer who is getting the following error when trying to access the 'new' action on my CityController: undefined method `cities_path' for #<#<Class:0x104608c18>:0x104606f08> Extracted source (around line #2): 1: <h1>New City</h1> 2: <%= form_for(@city) do |f| %> 3: <%= f.error_messages %> 4: 5: <div class="field"> As some background, I have a State model with many Cities. I'm getting this error after clicking on the following link coming from a State show page: <p>Add a city: <%= link_to "Add city", new_state_city_path(@state) %></p> When I run 'rake:routes' it says this is a legit route... For more background, here is the CityController 'new' action: def new @city = City.new respond_to do |format| format.html # new.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @city } end end Here is the (complete) form in the view: <%= form_for(@city) do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :name %><br /> <%= f.text_field :name %> </div> <div class="actions"> <%= f.submit %> </div> <% end %> This initially made me think that it's a resources/routes issue since it came back with a mention of 'cities_path' (in fact, that's what another person posting to Stack Overflow had wrong (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/845315/rails-error-nomethoderror-my-first-ruby-app). However, that doesn't seem to be the case from what I can see. Here are how my resources look in my routes file: resources :states do resources :cities end I can get it working when they are not sub-resources, but I really need to keep them as sub-resources for my future plans with the app. Any help would be very much appreciated, since I've been racking my brains on this for more hours than I would care to admit... Thanks! (Not sure this matters at all, but I'm running the very latest version of Rails 3 beta2).

  • Nested form problem in Rails : NoMethodError in Show

    - by brianheys
    I'm trying to build a simple product backlog application to teach myself Rails. For each product, there can be multiple product backlog entries, so I want to create a product view that shows the product information, all the backlog entries for the product, and includes a nested form for adding more backlog entries. Everything works until I try to add the form to the view, which then results in the following error: NoMethodError in Products#show Showing app/views/products/show.html.erb where line #29 raised: undefined method `pblog_ref' for #<Product:0x10423ba68> Extracted source (around line #29): 26: <%= f.error_messages %> 27: <p> 28: <%= f.label :pblog_ref %><br /> 29: <%= f.text_field :pblog_ref %> 30: </p> 31: <p> 32: <%= f.label :product %><br /> The product view where the problem is reported is as follows (the partial works fine, so I won't include that code): <h1>Showing product</h1> <p> <b>Product ref:</b> <%=h @product.product_ref %> </p> <p> <b>Description:</b> <%=h @product.description %> </p> <p> <b>Owner:</b> <%=h @product.owner %> </p> <p> <b>Status:</b> <%=h @product.status %> </p> <h2>Product backlog</h2> <div id="product-backlog"> <%= render :partial => @product.product_backlogs %> </div> <% form_for(@product, ProductBacklog.new) do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> <p> <%= f.label :pblog_ref %><br /> <%= f.text_field :pblog_ref %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :product %><br /> <%= f.text_field :product %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :description %><br /> <%= f.text_field :description %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :owner %><br /> <%= f.text_field :owner %> </p> <p> <%= f.label :status %><br /> <%= f.text_field :status %> </p> <p> <%= f.submit 'Create' %> </p> <% end %> <%= link_to 'Edit', edit_product_path(@product) %> | <%= link_to 'Back', products_path %> This is the Product model: class Product < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :product_ref, :description, :owner has_many :product_backlogs end This is the ProductBacklog model: class ProductBacklog < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :product end These are the routes: map.resources :product_backlogs map.resources :products, :has_many => :product_backlogs I've checked what I'm doing against the Creating a weblog in 15 minutes with Rails 2 screencast, and in principle I seem to be doing the same thing as him - only his nested comments form works, and mine doesn't! I hope someone can help with this, before I turn mad! I'm sure it's something trivial.

  • Ruby on Rails: url_for :back leads to NoMethodError for back_url

    - by Platinum Azure
Hi all, I'm trying to use url_for(:back) to create a redirect leading back to a previous page upon a user's logging in. I've had it working successfully for when the user just goes to the login page on his or her own. However, when the user is redirected to the login page due to accessing a page requiring that the user be authenticated, the redirect sends the user back to the page before the one s/he had tried to access with insufficient permissions. I'm trying to modify my login controller action to deal with the redirect properly. My plan is to have a query string parameter "redirect" that is used when a forced redirect occurs. In the controller, if that parameter exists that URL is used; otherwise, url_for(:back) is used, or if that doesn't work (due to lack of HTTP_REFERER), then the user is redirected to the site's home page. Here is the code snippet which is supposed to implement this logic: if params[:redirect] @url = params[:redirect] else @url = url_for :back @url ||= url_for :controller => "home", :action => "index" end The error I get is: NoMethodError in UsersController#login undefined method `back_url' for # RAILS_ROOT: [obscured] Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace • Undefined method 'size' for #<File:text.txt> (NoMethodError)

    - by user1354456
This is the code I am running, it does fine until I get to line 15. The command I run is: ruby ex16.rb text.txt. This is a practice sample I'm writing which is meant to be a simple little text editor: filename = ARGV.first script = $0 puts "We're going to erase #{filename}." puts "if you don't want that, hit CTRL-C (^C)." puts "If you do want that, hit RETURN." print "? " STDIN.gets puts "Opening the file..." target = File.open(filename, 'w') puts "Truncating the file. Goodbye!" target.truncate(target.size) puts "Now I'm going to ask you for three lines." print "line 1: "; line1 = STDIN.gets.chomp() print "line 2: "; line2 = STDIN.gets.chomp() print "line 3: "; line3 = STDIN.gets.chomp()undefined method 'size' puts "I'm going to write these to the file." target.write(line1) target.write("\n") target.write(line2) target.write("\n") target.write(line3) target.write("\n") puts "And finally, we close it." target.close()

  • No method error in controller create action

    - by user2799827
I have read a number of Q&As on SO in search of some help on this but have so far not solved my issue. I am trying to teach myself ruby/rails, and as a test project, I want to create a list of tvshows and a list of characters where each tvshow has_many characters and each character belongs_to a specific show. I am sure I am doing something basic incorrectly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. here is the characters controller: class CharactersController < ApplicationController before_action :set_character, only: [:show, :edit, :update, :destroy] # GET /characters # GET /characters.json def index @characters = Character.all end # GET /characters/1 # GET /characters/1.json def show end # GET /characters/new def new @character = Character.new end # GET /characters/1/edit def edit end # POST /characters # POST /characters.json def create @character = @tvshow.characters.create(params[:character]) respond_to do |format| if @character.save format.html { redirect_to @character, notice: 'Character was successfully created.' } format.json { render action: 'show', status: :created, location: @character } else format.html { render action: 'new' } format.json { render json: @character.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end # PATCH/PUT /characters/1 # PATCH/PUT /characters/1.json def update respond_to do |format| if @character.update(character_params) format.html { redirect_to @character, notice: 'Character was successfully updated.' } format.json { head :no_content } else format.html { render action: 'edit' } format.json { render json: @character.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end # DELETE /characters/1 # DELETE /characters/1.json def destroy @character.destroy respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to characters_url } format.json { head :no_content } end end private # Use callbacks to share common setup or constraints between actions. def set_character @character = Character.find(params[:id]) end # Never trust parameters from the scary internet, only allow the white list through. def character_params params.require(:character).permit(:first_name, :last_name, :bio) end end character model: class Character < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :tvshow default_scope -> { order('created_at DESC') } validates :tvshow_id, presence: true end tvshow model: class Tvshow < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :characters, dependent: :destroy end error gets returned when I attempt to create a character. here is the full trace: app/controllers/characters_controller.rb:27:in • What's causing "NoMethodError: undefined method `include?' for nil:NilClass"

    - by NudeCanalTroll
I have a Book model in my Rails application, with various properties (aka columns in the book db table). One of these properties is "ranking". Recently, may app has started to throw NoMethodError: undefined method 'include?' for nil:NilClass for the following code: def some_method(book, another_arg) return book.ranking unless book.ranking.blank? ... end However, it's not consistent. The vast majority of the time, accessing book.ranking works -- the error is thrown maybe 2-4% of the time. If I change the code to book[:ranking] or book['ranking'] instead of book.ranking, it works 100% of the time. Any ideas?
