  I have this string in an excel file: 4603,2504603#;4616,2504616#;4617,2504617#;4519,2504519#;4620,2504620 (It's actually a lot longer than that, but the pattern is the same). I need to be able to some how sort this into something that can be read easier. I want the end result to look like this: 4603,2504603 4616,2504616 4617,2504617 I guess I need a program or command that can replace #; with a line break. I need something that will work in Windows 7. I remember doing something similar to this in a Linux class using shell scripting but I can't remember how it was done. Note: This is NOT homework. It is something my boss has asked me to do at work.

• Command line does not execute my parameters

  I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example): CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe" If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go. What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.

• VS 2010 JavaScript editor – matching braces highlighting – is it so difficult to implement?

  I do not know. Just curious. But first things first. As a web developer I spend about 80% of my work-time editing JavaScript code. And since my server-side platform is .NET then it would be very convenient to have decent JavaScript text editor within Visual Studio IDE. So, Visual Studio 2010 is out. Downloaded and installed. What were my expectations regarding JavaScript editor? Pretty low, actually.  I just wanted to have matching braces highlighted eventually. That’s all. Yes, I know about Ctrl + ] shortcut but it is not event remotely close to convenience. And the result? Alas. Without further ado, just look at some real-world fragment of code from jQuery Templates Proposal experimental plugin as I see it in Notepad++, Notepad2 and Visual Studio 2010 editors respectively: Notepad++ Notepad2 Visual Studio 2010 Look at the highlighted parentheses, regular expression literals, numbers. Do you have a feeling that the last screenshot is not very informative in comparison with the other ones? If yes, then my question is why? Instead I was given an IntelliSense. Sorry, but I do not need it to rot my mind. Especially the one which does not always work properly (try to use it with base2 library for example). With all the expressive power of the language I have to know what I am doing. Instead I still have the same plain old Notepad with some of the JavaScript keywords colorized, plus partially functional/useful IntelliSense. What I do need, is just a little help to make less errors when I type the code – some essential text editor facilities that I really need. Give me that and only then feel free to improve on something else. Maybe I am wrong. Then, sorry. Just cannot believe that I have to wait for another couple of years to get very basic code editor feature.

• Notepad++ "Compress whitespace" effect

  I'm looking for a mechanism within notepad++ to replace runs of consecutive whitespace with a single space, like the "Compress whitespace" command in notepad2. Essentially, in regex form: s/\s+/ /g I know I can do it with the find-replace form, but I would prefer soemthing that I can bind to a keyboard sequence. EDIT Find and replace cannot be recorded as a macro in some versions of Notepad++. Update to the latest if you have trouble.

• Lightweight PHP/HTML/CSS editor with code browser

  I'm looking for a freeware editor which has; syntax highlighting and a code browser (or code suggestions/hints). Preferably freeware license! I've tried out quite a few editors, but a lot of them are unfortunately very resource heavy and provides a lot more functions than I ever needed. So far, there's two editors that I really like, and is lightweight: jEdit and Notepad++. Although, unfortunately... Notepad++ doesn't have code browser support for both control structures and functions for PHP. Also, there's no code browser for HTML... I really liked jEdit as well, but there doesn't seem to be a code browser for it. Except for maybe Completion, but it's a bothersome plugin, and doesn't show the code browser unless you type something in and press CTRL+B. Other editors I've tried, but wasn't satisfied with: Adobe Dreamweaver CodeLobster PHP Edition Aptana Studio Komodo Edit EditPlus BlueFish PHP Designer 2007 - Personal PhpStorm Scriptly Eclipse UltraEdit Notepad2 EditPad Pro Rapid PHP EDIT I'm using Windows XP

• Search Replace extended in a html file

  i have a little question. I have a big html file and want to replace lots of things inside a lot of times. The only problem i cant solve is a replace with a variable. Example: <image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"> should be transformed in <a href="start_files\0002.jpg" target="_blank"><image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"></a> do you have an idea how to do it? I have a windows system with Notepad2 and Notepad++ and i could install a new tool if needed. (like Windows SED). The best solution would be a batch solution where i can add other transformations. • How do you make Python wait so that you can read the output?

  I've always been a heavy user of Notepad2, as it is fast, feature-rich, and supports syntax highlighting. Recently I've been using it for Python. My problem: when I finish editing a certain Python source code, and try to launch it, the screen disappears before I can see the output pop up. Is there any way for me to make the results wait so that I can read it, short of using an input() or time-delay function? Otherwise I'd have to use IDLE, because of the output that stops for you to read. (My apologies if this question is a silly one, but I'm very new at Python and programming in general.)

• Windows file association for README, INSTALL, LICENSE and the like [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to set the default program for opening files without an extension in Windows? Many files originating in the UNIX world come without file extension. Popular examples include README, INSTALL, LICENSE. We know for a fact that these are text files. It is therefore a bit disappointing not to be able to just double-click them open in Explorer and see them in Notepad (actually, Notepad2 because of the UNIX line endings which silly Microsoft Notepad doesn't render correctly). Does anyone know of a way to create a file association for, say, README files without extension? This could then be replicated to cover the most frequently occurring file types, and then double-clicking them open would work. Update (Sort of in response to all your comments.) Thanks, folks, your comments and answers have helped me. @Indrek, yes, I was under the assumption that you could somehow create an association for just README or Makefile, and couldn't do so for files without extension. Turns out the contrary is true, and yes, that is a workaround that neatly solves the issue. Ultimately, I just want to be able to double-click to open a README or Makefile, that's all. @Sampo, the SendMe trick is also useful, although usability is not as great as a straight double-click. (I'm really lazy sometimes.) Turns out the following trick using ftype and ftype from an Administrator prompt does the double-click enabling job: assoc .=no_ext ftype no_ext=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1 :: You can see it created some entries in the registry: reg query hkcr\no_ext /s reg query hkcr\. /s

• Without an internet connection my computer loads programs slowly. With an internet connection they load quickly

  Gday. I've a laptop, with 8gb of RAM and a Samsung 830 SSD with about 2/5th of free space out of its 256gb. Win7 64b. Laptop is a Toshiba T130. In the other day I noticed that it took a long time to load a program, for example the python interpreter at the time the computer didn't have access to the home network. In both cases the computer boots quickly. About 40 seconds. Without internet opening the python interpreter, or notepad2.exe, or any program individually takes around 10 seconds. With internet connection (through WiFi) opening the same programs takes about 2 seconds. In both cases, it becomes SSD-instant-quick to open a program from a cold boot. I don't have any network mapped drives. I've tried with AV off (Avast antivirus) and same effect. I've installed all MS updates. I've googled and googled and have found nothing of help. I've run the Samsung SSD magician to "optimise" ssd and that didn't help. What could I do to determine & fix this issue?

• Why are my installed fonts not available in .NET?

  I'm trying to render some images with text using a font I just added to my machine and no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the font to become accessible in .NET. I tried using PrivateFontCollection.AddFontFile(filename) and PrivateFontCollection.AddMemoryFont(...) to load the font into memory. Whenever I do this, the method throws a "File Not Found" exception, which is unusual because I get this exception when loading the font from memory, where there should be no files to be "not found". Initially, I thought it may be because the font I was trying to use was in the .pfm format, so I converted the font to .otf and had the same problem. Then I tried installing the .otf font to my Windows Fonts folder so I could pull it from FontFamily.Families. Once I installed the font, it became available in Microsoft Word & Notepad2. However, when I try to load it from FontFamily.Families, it is not included in the array. I thought rebooting my machine would fix the issue but obviously there is something more complicated involved here. Is there something basic I just might have missed when installing the font in my machine (Windows Vista), or is there another way to programmatically load a font that I should be using instead? Is .otf not supported in .NET?

• How To Replace Notepad in Windows 7

  It used to be that Notepad was a necessary evil because it started up quickly and let us catch a quick glimpse of plain text files. Now, there are a bevy of capable Notepad replacements that are just as fast, but also have great feature sets. Before following the rest of this how-to, ensure that you’re logged into an account with Administrator access. Note: The following instructions involve modifying some Windows system folders. Don’t mess anything up while you’re in there! If you follow our instructions closely, you’ll be fine. Choose your replacement There are a ton of great Notepad replacements, including Notepad2, Metapad, and Notepad++. The best one for you will depend on what types of text files you open and what you do with them. We’re going to use Notepad++ in this how-to. The first step is to find the executable file that you’ll replace Notepad with. Usually this will be the only file with the .exe file extension in the folder where you installed your text editor. Copy the executable file to your desktop and try to open it, to make sure that it works when opened from a different folder. In the Notepad++ case, a special little .exe file is available for the explicit purpose of replacing Notepad.If we run it from the desktop, it opens up Notepad++ in all its glory. Back up Notepad You will probably never go back once you switch, but you never know. You can backup Notepad to a special location if you’d like, but we find it’s easiest to just keep a backed up copy of Notepad in the folders it was originally located. In Windows 7, Notepad resides in: C:\Windows C:\Windows\System32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64 in 64-bit versions only Navigate to each of those directories and copy Notepad. Paste it into the same folder. If prompted, choose to Copy, but keep both files. You can keep your backup as “notepad (2).exe”, but we prefer to rename it to “notepad.exe.bak”. Do this for all of the folders that have Notepad (2 total for 32-bit Windows 7, 3 total for 64-bit). Take control of Notepad and delete it Even if you’re on an administrator account, you can’t just delete Notepad – Microsoft has made some security gains in this respect. Fortunately for us, it’s still possible to take control of a file and delete it without resorting to nasty hacks like disabling UAC. Navigate to one of the directories that contain Notepad. Right-click on it and select Properties.   Switch to the Security tab, then click on the Advanced button. Note that the owner of the file is a user called “TrustedInstaller”. You can’t do much with files owned by TrustedInstaller, so let’s take control of it. Click the Edit… button. Select the desired owner (you could choose your own account, but we’re going to give any Administrator control) and click OK. You’ll get a message that you need to close and reopen the Properties windows to edit permissions. Before doing that, confirm that the owner has changed to what you selected. Click OK, then OK again to close the Properties window. Right-click on Notepad and click on Properties again. Switch to the Security tab. Click on Edit…. Select the appropriate group or user name in the list at the top, then add a checkmark in the checkbox beside Full control in the Allow column. Click OK, then Yes to the dialog box that pops up. Click OK again to close the Properties window. Now you can delete Notepad, by either selecting it and pressing Delete on the keyboard, or right-click on it and click Delete.   You’re now free from Notepad’s foul clutches! Repeat this procedure for the remaining folders (or folder, on 32-bit Windows 7). Drop in your replacement Copy your Notepad replacement’s executable, which should still be on your desktop. Browse to the two or three folders listed above and copy your .exe to those locations. If prompted for Administrator permission, click Continue. If your executable file was named something other than “notepad.exe”, rename it to “notepad.exe”. Don’t be alarmed if the thumbnail still shows the old Notepad icon. Double click on Notepad and your replacement should open. To make doubly sure that it works, press Win+R to bring up the Run dialog box and enter “notepad” into the text field. Press enter or click OK. Now you can allow Windows to open files with Notepad by default with little to no shame! All without restarting or having to disable UAC! • Creating and writing file from a FileOutputStream in Java

  Okay, so I'm working on a project where I use a Java program to initiate a socket connection between two classes (a FileSender and FileReceiver). My basic idea was that the FileSender would look like this: try { writer = new DataOutputStream(connect.getOutputStream()); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } //While we have bytes to send while(filein.available() >0){ //We write them out to our buffer writer.write(filein.read(outBuffer)); writer.flush(); } //Then close our filein filein.close(); //And then our socket; connect.close(); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); The constructor contains code that checks to see if the file exists, and that the socket is connected, and so on. Inside my FileReader is this though: input = recvSocket.accept(); BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(input.getInputStream())); FileOutputStream fOut= new FileOutputStream(filename); String line = br.readLine(); while(line != null){ fOut.write(line.getBytes()); fOut.flush(); line = br.readLine(); } System.out.println("Before RECV close statements"); fOut.close(); input.close(); recvSocket.close(); System.out.println("After RECV clsoe statements"); All inside a try-catch block. So, what I'm trying to do is have the FileSender reading in the file, converting to bytes, sending and flushing it out. FileReceiver, then reads in the bytes, writes to the fileOut, flushes, and continues waiting for more. I make sure to close all the things that I open, so... here comes the weird part. When I try and open the created text file in Eclipse, it tells me "An SWT error has occured ... recommended to exit the workbench... see .log for more details.". Another window pops up saying "Unhandled event loop exception, (no more handles)". However, if I try to open the sent text file in notepad2, I get ThisIsASentTextfile Which is good (well, minus the fact that there should be line breaks, but I'm working on that...). Does anyone know why this is happening? And while we're checking, how to add the line breaks? (And is this a particularly bad way to transfer files over java without getting some other libraries?)
