  • Assigning a different texture based on picking(XNA)

    - by Thomas Carmichael
I'm making a game using XNA. I have some simple objects like cube and sphere, and I would like to change the texture of one face of these objects based on picking. That is, when the cursor is over one face, it turns red. The only way I've seen to do this is to overload the content processor as here: http://xbox.create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/picking_triangle but it seems like it shouldn't be this complicated. I'm using .x models, and would like to be able to implement this for more complex models in the future beyond cubes/spheres/etc. Is this the best/only way to go about it? I'll figure that out if that's what is necessary, but it seems that there would be a simpler solution to load a different texture to a face than I've seen, I just don't know what it is.

  • Flowmotion Running on Ubuntu Server [migrated]

    - by Thomas Egan
I am trying to configure Flowmotion to work on my Ubuntu Server. At present I use LAMP to serve pages from a Virtualbox installation. I will be moving this to a dedicated server but would like to enable true streaming of videos using this installation. I am only interested in open source streaming for a research project and although I have installed Flowmotion via apt-get I don't know how to start the service so that embedded videos located on the server will stream. Can anybody provide any information regarding this or online resources I may have missed? I have checked the documentation however if appears far too complex. Just clarify I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and Ubuntu Server 12.06 64-bit

  • Designing communications for extensibility

    - by Thomas S.
I am working on the design stages of an application that will a) collect data from various sources (in my case that's scientific data from serial ports), keeping track of the age of the data, b) generate real-time statistics (e.g. running averages) c) display, record, and otherwise handle the data (and statistics). I anticipate that I will be adding both data producers and consumers over time, and would like to design this application abstractly so that I will be able to trivially add functionality with a small amount of interface code. What I'm stumbling on is deciding what communication infrastructure I should use to handle the interfaces. In particular, how should I make the processed data and statistics available to multiple consumers? Some things I've considered: Writing to several named pipes (variable number). Each consumer reads from one of them. Using FUSE to make a userspace filesystem where a read() returns the latest line of data even if another process has already read it. Making a TCP server, and having consumers connect and request data individually. Simply writing the consumers as part of the same program that aggregates the data. So I would like to hear your all's advice on deciding how to interface these functions in the best way to keep them separate and allow room for extenstions.

  • How do I change the cursor and its size?

    - by Thomas Le Feuvre
I have recently created an Ubuntu 12.04 partition on my Windows 7 laptop. When installing it, I switched to "high contrast" mode, which has rather large cursors (by large I mean about twice as large and thick as they should normally are). Now I have successfully installed the partition, the large cursors have stuck around even after exiting this high contrast mode, but only when I am hovering over stuff e.g. hovering over text inputs, links, and when resizing windows. All of these cursors are too large. They cursor is only normally sized when the computer should be displaying the normal mouse pointer. Does anyone know how I might go about fixing this?

  • Saving image to database as varbinary, arraylength (part 2)

    - by Thomas Schoof
This is a followup to my previous question, which got solved (thank you for that) but now I am stuck at another error. I'm trying to save an image in my database (called 'Afbeelding'), for that I made a table which excists of: id: int souce: varbinary(max) I then created a wcf service to save an 'Afbeelding' to the database. private static DataClassesDataContext dc = new DataClassesDataContext(); [OperationContract] public void setAfbeelding(Afbeelding a) { //Afbeelding a = new Afbeelding(); //a.id = 1; //a.source = new Binary(bytes); dc.Afbeeldings.InsertOnSubmit(a); dc.SubmitChanges(); } I then put a reference to the service in my project and when I press the button I try to save it to the datbase. private void btnUpload_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Afbeelding a = new Afbeelding(); OpenFileDialog openFileDialog = new OpenFileDialog(); openFileDialog.Filter = "JPEG files|*.jpg"; if (openFileDialog.ShowDialog() == true) { //string imagePath = openFileDialog.File.Name; //FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(imagePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); //byte[] buffer = new byte[fileStream.Length]; //fileStream.Read(buffer, 0, (int)fileStream.Length); //fileStream.Close(); Stream stream = (Stream)openFileDialog.File.OpenRead(); Byte[] bytes = new Byte[stream.Length]; stream.Read(bytes, 0, (int)stream.Length); string fileName = openFileDialog.File.Name; a.id = 1; a.source = new Binary { Bytes = bytes }; } EditAfbeeldingServiceClient client = new EditAfbeeldingServiceClient(); client.setAfbeeldingCompleted +=new EventHandler<System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs>(client_setAfbeeldingCompleted); client.setAfbeeldingAsync(a); } void client_setAfbeeldingCompleted(object sender, System.ComponentModel.AsyncCompletedEventArgs e) { if (e.Error != null) txtEmail.Text = e.Error.ToString(); else MessageBox.Show("WIN"); } However, when I do this, I get the following error: System.ServiceModel.FaultException: The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter :a. The InnerException message was 'There was an error deserializing the object of type OndernemersAward.Web.Afbeelding. The maximum array length quota (16384) has been exceeded while reading XML data. • SQL Server Search Proper Names Full Text Index vs LIKE + SOUNDEX

    - by Matthew Talbert
I have a database of names of people that has (currently) 35 million rows. I need to know what is the best method for quickly searching these names. The current system (not designed by me), simply has the first and last name columns indexed and uses "LIKE" queries with the additional option of using SOUNDEX (though I'm not sure this is actually used much). Performance has always been a problem with this system, and so currently the searches are limited to 200 results (which still takes too long to run). So, I have a few questions: Does full text index work well for proper names? If so, what is the best way to query proper names? (CONTAINS, FREETEXT, etc) Is there some other system (like Lucene.net) that would be better? Just for reference, I'm using Fluent NHibernate for data access, so methods that work will with that will be preferred. I'm using SQL Server 2008 currently. EDIT I want to add that I'm very interested in solutions that will deal with things like commonly misspelled names, eg 'smythe', 'smith', as well as first names, eg 'tomas', 'thomas'. Query Plan |--Parallelism(Gather Streams) |--Nested Loops(Inner Join, OUTER REFERENCES:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id], [Expr1004]) OPTIMIZED WITH UNORDERED PREFETCH) |--Hash Match(Inner Join, HASH:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id])=([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id])) | |--Bitmap(HASH:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id]), DEFINE:([Bitmap1003])) | | |--Parallelism(Repartition Streams, Hash Partitioning, PARTITION COLUMNS:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id])) | | |--Index Seek(OBJECT:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[IX_Test_LastName]), SEEK:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[LastName] >= 'WHITDþ' AND [testdb].[dbo].[Test].[LastName] < 'WHITF'), WHERE:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[LastName] like 'WHITE%') ORDERED FORWARD) | |--Parallelism(Repartition Streams, Hash Partitioning, PARTITION COLUMNS:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id])) | |--Index Seek(OBJECT:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[IX_Test_FirstName]), SEEK:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[FirstName] >= 'THOMARþ' AND [testdb].[dbo].[Test].[FirstName] < 'THOMAT'), WHERE:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[FirstName] like 'THOMAS%' AND PROBE([Bitmap1003],[testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id],N'[IN ROW]')) ORDERED FORWARD) |--Clustered Index Seek(OBJECT:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[PK__TEST__3214EC073B95D2F1]), SEEK:([testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id]=[testdb].[dbo].[Test].[Id]) LOOKUP ORDERED FORWARD) SQL for above: SELECT * FROM testdb.dbo.Test WHERE LastName LIKE 'WHITE%' AND FirstName LIKE 'THOMAS%' Based on advice from Mitch, I created an index like this: CREATE INDEX IX_Test_Name_DOB ON Test (LastName ASC, FirstName ASC, BirthDate ASC) INCLUDE (and here I list the other columns) My searches are now incredibly fast for my typical search (last, first, and birth date).

  • Unauthorized Sharepoint WSDL from Coldfusion 8

    - by antony.trupe
How do I solve the error: Unable to read WSDL from URL: https://workflowtest.site.edu/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx?WSDL. Error: 401 Unauthorized. I can successfully view the WSDL from the browser using the same user account. I'm not sure which authentication is being used (Basic or Integrated). How would I find that out? • jQuery Cycle plugin z-index float problem

    - by Antony Carthy
When I try to place an element on top of my jQuery Cycle element, it doesn't work. The element is always behind the jQuery cycle element. I use float: right; to position the element, and set its z-index to 100000, to no avail. Firebug sees the Cycle element and its children as having low z-indexes, and shows the floating element to be in the right place. The element never shows above the Cycling images. <!-- the cycling set --> <div id='headerimages'> <img src='images/header1.jpg' alt='' style='' /> <img src='images/header2.jpg' alt='' style='' /> <img src='images/header3.jpg' alt='' style='' /> </div> <!-- the floating element --> <img src='images/logotransparent.png' alt='' id='logo' />

  • Does business logic belong in the service layer?

    - by antony.trupe
I've got a set of classes, namely, a data transfer object, a service implementation object, and a data access object. I currently have business logic in the service implementation object; it uses the dao to get data to populate the dto that is shipped back to the client/gui code. The issue is that I can't create a lightweight junit test of the service implementtion object(it's a servlet); I think the business logic should be elsewhere, but the only thing I can think of is putting business logic in the dao or in yet another layer that goes between the dao and the service implementation. Are there other options, or am I thinking about this the wrong way? It's a GWT/App Engine project.

  • Hidden Features of HTML

    - by Binoj Antony
HTML being the most widely used language (at least as a markup language) has not gotten its due credit. Considering that it has been around for so many years, things like the FORM / INPUT controls have still remained same with no new controls added. So at least from the existing features, do you know any that are not well known but very useful. Of course, this question is along the lines of: Hidden Features of JavaScript Hidden Features of CSS Hidden Features of C# Hidden Features of VB.NET Hidden Features of Java Hidden Features of ASP.NET Hidden Features of Python Hidden Features of TextPad Hidden Features of Eclipse Do not mention features of HTML 5.0, since it is in working draft Please specify one feature per answer.

  • What programming technique / practice done by you was ahead of its time?

    - by Binoj Antony
I once built a very good web application in ASP (classic) back in 2001 and extensively used XmlHttpRequest object in it. (I was lucky that the clients were only using IE, and only IE supported this object at that time). Then later when people started talking about AJAX in 2005, It felt good to have used something ahead (or early) of its time. Well, maybe this does not qualify to be listed as something done ahead of its time. Which programming technology/technique/practice have you done that was ahead of this time. One story per answer please. The title for this question taken from an opposite question here.

  • Now with GWT2, what are the advantages over wicket and likewise?

    - by Antony Stubbs
Apart from the argument of wicket's simplicity (that is, wicket is a simpler system IMHO) and GWT's responsiveness in the client (GWT's client side state and javascript - potentially complex client side code) and GWT's greater potential for scaling, what is the argument for using GWT over wicket? Personally I've done a lot of wicket development, but have only had a quick look at GWT a long time ago.
