  • how to use ajax with json in ruby on rails

    - by rafik860
I am implemeting a facebook application in rails using facebooker plugin, therefore it is very important to use this architecture if i want to update multiple DOM in my page. if my code works in a regular rails application it would work in my facebook application. i am trying to use ajax to let the user know that the comment was sent, and update the comments bloc. migration: class CreateComments < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up create_table :comments do |t| t.string :body t.timestamps end end def self.down drop_table :comments end end controller: class CommentsController < ApplicationController def index @comments=Comment.all end def create @comment=Comment.create(params[:comment]) if request.xhr? @comments=Comment.all render :json=>{:ids_to_update=>[:all_comments,:form_message], :all_comments=>render_to_string(:partial=>"comments" ), :form_message=>"Your comment has been added." } else redirect_to comments_url end end end view: <script> function update_count(str,message_id) { len=str.length; if (len < 200) { $(message_id).innerHTML="<span style='color: green'>"+ (200-len)+" remaining</span>"; } else { $(message_id).innerHTML="<span style='color: red'>"+ "Comment too long. Only 200 characters allowed.</span>"; } } function update_multiple(json) { for( var i=0; i<json["ids_to_update"].length; i++ ) { id=json["ids_to_update"][i]; $(id).innerHTML=json[id]; } } </script> <div id="all_comments" > <%= render :partial=>"comments/comments" %> </div> Talk some trash: <br /> <% remote_form_for Comment.new, :url=>comments_url, :success=>"update_multiple(request)" do |f|%> <%= f.text_area :body, :onchange=>"update_count(this.getValue(),'remaining');" , :onkeyup=>"update_count(this.getValue(),'remaining');" %> <br /> <%= f.submit 'Post'%> <% end %> <p id="remaining" >&nbsp;</p> <p id="form_message" >&nbsp;</p> <br><br> <br> if i try to do alert(json) in the first line of the update_multiple function , i got an [object Object]. if i try to do alert(json["ids_to_update"][0]) in the first line of the update_multiple function , there is no dialog box displayed. however the comment got saved but nothing is updated. it seems like the object sent by rails is nil or cant be parsed by JSON.parse(json). questions: 1.how can javascript and rails know that i am dealing with json objects?deos ROR sent it a object format or a text format?how can it check that the json object has been sent 2.how can i see what is the returned json?do i have to parse it?how? 2.how can i debug this problem? 3.how can i get it to work?

  • Refactoring a Single Rails Model with large methods & long join queries trying to do everything

    - by Kelseydh
I have a working Ruby on Rails Model that I suspect is inefficient, hard to maintain, and full of unnecessary SQL join queries. I want to optimize and refactor this Model (Quiz.rb) to comply with Rails best practices, but I'm not sure how I should do it. The Rails app is a game that has Missions with many Stages. Users complete Stages by answering Questions that have correct or incorrect Answers. When a User tries to complete a stage by answering questions, the User gets a Quiz entry with many Attempts. Each Attempt records an Answer submitted for that Question within the Stage. A user completes a stage or mission by getting every Attempt correct, and their progress is tracked by adding a new entry to the UserMission & UserStage join tables. All of these features work, but unfortunately the Quiz.rb Model has been twisted to handle almost all of it exclusively. The callbacks began at 'Quiz.rb', and because I wasn't sure how to leave the Quiz Model during a multi-model update, I resorted to using Rails Console to have the @quiz instance variable via self.some_method do all the heavy lifting to retrieve every data value for the game's business logic; resulting in large extended join queries that "dance" all around the Database schema. The Quiz.rb Model that Smells: class Quiz < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :attempts, dependent: :destroy before_save :check_answer before_save :update_user_mission_and_stage accepts_nested_attributes_for :attempts, :reject_if => lambda { |a| a[:answer_id].blank? }, :allow_destroy => true #Checks every answer within each quiz, adding +1 for each correct answer #within a stage quiz, and -1 for each incorrect answer def check_answer stage_score = 0 self.attempts.each do |attempt| if attempt.answer.correct? == true stage_score += 1 elsif attempt.answer.correct == false stage_score - 1 end end stage_score end def winner return true end def update_user_mission_and_stage ####### #Step 1: Checks if UserMission exists, finds or creates one. #if no UserMission for the current mission exists, creates a new UserMission if self.user_has_mission? == false @user_mission = UserMission.new(user_id: self.user.id, mission_id: self.current_stage.mission_id, available: true) @user_mission.save else @user_mission = self.find_user_mission end ####### #Step 2: Checks if current UserStage exists, stops if true to prevent duplicate entry if self.user_has_stage? @user_mission.save return true else ####### ##Step 3: if step 2 returns false: ##Initiates UserStage creation instructions #checks for winner (winner actions need to be defined) if they complete last stage of last mission for a given orientation if self.passed? && self.is_last_stage? && self.is_last_mission? create_user_stage_and_update_user_mission self.winner #NOTE: The rest are the same, but specify conditions that are available to add badges or other actions upon those conditions occurring: ##if user completes first stage of a mission elsif self.passed? && self.is_first_stage? && self.is_first_mission? create_user_stage_and_update_user_mission #creates user badge for finishing first stage of first mission self.user.add_badge(5) self.user.activity_logs.create(description: "granted first-stage badge", type_event: "badge", value: "first-stage") #If user completes last stage of a given mission, creates a new UserMission elsif self.passed? && self.is_last_stage? && self.is_first_mission? create_user_stage_and_update_user_mission #creates user badge for finishing first mission self.user.add_badge(6) self.user.activity_logs.create(description: "granted first-mission badge", type_event: "badge", value: "first-mission") elsif self.passed? create_user_stage_and_update_user_mission else self.passed? == false return true end end end #Creates a new UserStage record in the database for a successful Quiz question passing def create_user_stage_and_update_user_mission @nu_stage = @user_mission.user_stages.new(user_id: self.user.id, stage_id: self.current_stage.id) @nu_stage.save @user_mission.save self.user.add_points(50) end #Boolean that defines passing a stage as answering every question in that stage correct def passed? self.check_answer >= self.number_of_questions end #Returns the number of questions asked for that stage's quiz def number_of_questions self.attempts.first.answer.question.stage.questions.count end #Returns the current_stage for the Quiz, routing through 1st attempt in that Quiz def current_stage self.attempts.first.answer.question.stage end #Gives back the position of the stage relative to its mission. def stage_position self.attempts.first.answer.question.stage.position end #will find the user_mission for the current user and stage if it exists def find_user_mission self.user.user_missions.find_by_mission_id(self.current_stage.mission_id) end #Returns true if quiz was for the last stage within that mission #helpful for triggering actions related to a user completing a mission def is_last_stage? self.stage_position == self.current_stage.mission.stages.last.position end #Returns true if quiz was for the first stage within that mission #helpful for triggering actions related to a user completing a mission def is_first_stage? self.stage_position == self.current_stage.mission.stages_ordered.first.position end #Returns true if current user has a UserMission for the current stage def user_has_mission? self.user.missions.ids.include?(self.current_stage.mission.id) end #Returns true if current user has a UserStage for the current stage def user_has_stage? self.user.stages.include?(self.current_stage) end #Returns true if current user is on the last mission based on position within a given orientation def is_first_mission? self.user.missions.first.orientation.missions.by_position.first.position == self.current_stage.mission.position end #Returns true if current user is on the first stage & mission of a given orientation def is_last_mission? self.user.missions.first.orientation.missions.by_position.last.position == self.current_stage.mission.position end end My Question Currently my Rails server takes roughly 500ms to 1 sec to process single @quiz.save action. I am confident that the slowness here is due to sloppy code, not bad Database ERD design. What does a better solution look like? And specifically: Should I use join queries to retrieve values like I did here, or is it better to instantiate new objects within the model instead? Or am I missing a better solution? How should update_user_mission_and_stage be refactored to follow best practices? Relevant Code for Reference: quizzes_controller.rb w/ Controller Route Initiating Callback: class QuizzesController < ApplicationController before_action :find_stage_and_mission before_action :find_orientation before_action :find_question def show end def create @user = current_user @quiz = current_user.quizzes.new(quiz_params) if @quiz.save if @quiz.passed? if @mission.next_mission.nil? && @stage.next_stage.nil? redirect_to root_path, notice: "Congratulations, you have finished the last mission!" elsif @stage.next_stage.nil? redirect_to [@mission.next_mission, @mission.first_stage], notice: "Correct! • Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

    - by 23tux
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller. But I'm using a URLLoader to upload a image, that is modified in my Flex-App. First, here is the code from the tutorial: private function selectHandler(event:Event):void { var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(uri); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; vars.description = "My Description"; request.data = vars; var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; fileReference.upload(request, uploadDataFieldName); } I don't know how to set that var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; in a URLLoader. I've got the image data compressed as a JPEG in a ByteArray. It looks like this: public function savePicture():void { var filename:String = "blubblub.jpg"; var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); vars.position = layoutView.currentPicPosition; vars.url = filename; vars.user_id = 1; vars.comic_id = 1; vars.file_content_type = "image/jpeg"; vars.file_file_name = filename; var rawBytes:ByteArray = new JPGEncoder(75).encode(bitmapdata); vars.picture = rawBytes; var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(Data.SERVER_ADDR + "pictures/upload"); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; request.data = vars; var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(request); loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, savePictureHandler); loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandlerUpload); loader.load(request); } If I set the var.picture URLVariable to the bytearray, then I get the error, that the upload is nil. Here is the Rails part: Picture-Model: require 'paperclip' class Picture < ActiveRecord::Base # relations from picture belongs_to :comic belongs_to :user has_many :picture_bubbles has_many :bubbles, :through => :picture_bubbles # attached file for picture upload -> with paperclip plugin has_attached_file :file, :path => "public/system/pictures/:basename.:extension" end and the picture controller with the upload function: class PicturesController < ApplicationController protect_from_forgery :except => :upload def upload @picture = Picture.new(params[:picture]) @picture.position = params[:position] @picture.comic_id = params[:comic_id] @picture.url = params[:url] @picture.user_id = params[:user_id] if @picture.save render(:nothing => true, :status => 200) else render(:nothing => true, :status => 500) end end end Does anyone know how to solve this problem? thx, tux

Guys, Here my issuse: I've got two models: class User < ActiveRecord::Base # Setup accessible (or protected) attributes for your model attr_accessible :email, :username has_many :tasks end class Task < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user end with this simple routes.rb file TestProj::Application.routes.draw do |map| resources :users do resources :tasks end end this schema: ActiveRecord::Schema.define(:version => 20100525021007) do create_table "tasks", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "estimated_time" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.integer "user_id" end create_table "users", :force => true do |t| t.string "email" t.string "password" t.string "password_confirmation" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.string "username" end add_index "users", ["email"], :name => "index_users_on_email", :unique => true add_index "users", ["username"], :name => "index_users_on_username", :unique => true end and this controller for my tasks: class TasksController < ApplicationController before_filter :load_user def new @task = @user.tasks.new end private def load_user @user = User.find(params[:user_id]) end end Finally here is my test: require 'spec_helper' describe TasksController do before(:each) do @user = Factory(:user) @task = Factory(:task) end #GET New describe "GET New" do before(:each) do User.stub!(:find).with(@user.id.to_s).and_return(@user) @user.stub_chain(:tasks, :new).and_return(@task) end it "should return a new Task" do @user.tasks.should_receive(:new).and_return(@task) get :new, :user_id => @user.id end end end This test fails with the following output: 1) TasksController GET New should return a new Task Failure/Error: get :new, :user_id => @user.id undefined method `abstract_class?' for Object:Class # • rails: "unknown action" message when action is clearly specified

    - by john
hi, I had hard time to figure out why I've been getting "unknown action" error message when I was do some editing: Unknown action No action responded to 11. Actions: bin, create, destroy, edit, index, new, observe_new, show, tag, update, and vote you can see that Rails did mention each action in the above list - update. • Ruby on Rails is complaining about a method that doesn't exist that is built into Active Record. Wha

    - by grg-n-sox
This will probably just be a simple problem and I am just blind or an idiot but I could use some help. So I am going over some basic guides in Rails, reviewing the basics and such for an upcoming exam. One of the guides included was the sort-of-standard getting started guide over at guide.rubyonrails.org. Here is the link if you need it. Also all my code is for my app is from there, so I have no problem releasing any of my code since it should be the same as shown there. I didn't do a copy paste, but I basically was typing with Vim in one half of my screen and the web page in the other half, typing what I see. http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html So like I said, I am going along the guide when I noticed past a certain point in the tutorial, I was always getting an error on the site. To find the section of code, just hit Ctrl+f on the page (or whatever you have search/find set to) and enter "accepts_". This should immediately direct you to this chunk of code. class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :title validates_length_of :title, :minimum => 5 has_many :comments has_many :tags accepts_nested_attributes_for :tags, :allow_destroy => :true , :reject_if => proc { |attrs| attrs.all? { |k, v| v.blank? } } end So I tried putting this in my code. It is in ~/Rails/blog/app/models/post.rb in case you are wondering. However, even after all the other code I put in past that in the guide, hoping I was just missing some line of code that would come up later in the guide. But nothing, same error every time. This is what I get. NoMethodError in PostsController#index undefined method `accepts_nested_attributes_for' for #<Class:0xb7109f98> /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.2.2/lib/active_record/base.rb:1833:in `method_missing' app/models/post.rb:7 app/controllers/posts_controller.rb:9:in `index' Request Parameters: None Response Headers: {"Content-Type"=>"", "cookie"=>[], "Cache-Control"=>"no-cache"} Now, I copied the above code from the guide. The two code sections I edited mentioned in the error message I will paste as is below. class PostsController < ApplicationController # GET /posts # GET /posts.xml before_filter :find_post, :only => [:show, :edit, :update, :destroy] def index @posts = Post.find(:all) # <= the line 9 referred to in error message respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @posts } end end class Post < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :title validates_length_of :title, :minimum => 5 has_many :comments has_many :tags accepts_nested_attributes_for :tags, :allow_destroy => :true , # <= problem :reject_if => proc { |attrs| attrs.all? { |k, v| v.blank? } } end Also here is gem local gem list. I do note that they are a bit out of date, but the default Rails install any of the school machines (an environment likely for my exam) is basically 'gem install rails --version 2.2.2' and since they are windows machines, they come with all the normal windows ruby gems that comes with the ruby installer. However, I am running this off a Debian virtual machine of mine, but trying to set it up similarly and I figured the windows ruby gems wouldn't change anything in Rails. *** LOCAL GEMS *** actionmailer (2.2.2) actionpack (2.2.2) activerecord (2.2.2) activeresource (2.2.2) activesupport (2.2.2) gem_plugin (0.2.3) hpricot (0.8.2) linecache (0.43) log4r (1.1.7) ptools (1.1.9) rack (1.1.0) rails (2.2.2) rake (0.8.7) sqlite3-ruby (1.2.3) So any ideas on what the problem is? Thanks in advanced.

  • Rails controller method going to plural form

    - by Jty.tan
I'm new to rails! Ok, I am trying to set up a user signup form. It is mapped as a singular resource in the routes map.resource :user And trying to create the user through the console works fine. the controller code for user's signup is as follows: def signup @user = User.new#(params[:user]) end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) #debugger if request.post? if @user.save session[:user] = User.authenticate(@user.login, @user.password) flash[:message] = "Signup successful" redirect_to registries_path else flash[:warning] = "Signup unsuccessful" #redirect_to 'user/signup' end end end The signup view is as follows (and this is where i think something is going wrong) <% form_tag user_path do %> <p>User creation.</p> <p><%= error_messages_for 'user' %></p> <p> <label>Username:</label> <%= text_field_tag 'login', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Password:</label> <%= password_field_tag 'password', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Password confirmation:</label> <%= password_field_tag 'password_confirmation', nil, :size => 20, :maxlength => 20 %> </p> <p> <label>Email:</label> <%= text_field_tag 'email' %> </p> <p><%= submit_tag 'Signup' %></p> <% end %> Now, that page renders just fine. I've called the form on the "user_path" which is singular (i think?). But when I hit the submit button, it gives me an error saying that uninitialized constant UsersController the occurence of the error makes sense, since User is meant to be singular, so if it is trying to call the Users controller, it should be chucking an error. When I checked the server log, it shows this message: Processing ApplicationController#create (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-05-08 16:26:14) [POST] Parameters: {"commit"=>"Signup", "password_confirmation"=>"[FILTERED]", "action"=>"create", "authenticity_token"=>"yOcHY+rMjaqmu9HS8EwnDqJKbc0Zxictc0y4dtD26ac=", "controller"=>"users", "login"=>"bob", "password"=>"[FILTERED]", "email"=>"[email protected]"} NameError (uninitialized constant UsersController): In the params, I can see that it is calling the "users" controller. But I'm not sure how to fix that, or what is causing it to call the "users" controller as opposed to the "user" controller. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • What's the best way to refactor this Rails controller?

    - by Robert DiNicolas
I'd like some advice on how to best refactor this controller. The controller builds a page of zones and modules. Page has_many zones, zone has_many modules. So zones are just a cluster of modules wrapped in a container. The problem I'm having is that some modules may have some specific queries that I don't want executed on every page, so I've had to add conditions. The conditions just test if the module is on the page, if it is the query is executed. One of the problems with this is if I add a hundred special module queries, the controller has to iterate through each one. I think I would like to see these module condition moved out of the controller as well as all the additional custom actions. I can keep everything in this one controller, but I plan to have many apps using this controller so it could get messy. class PagesController < ApplicationController # GET /pages/1 # GET /pages/1.xml # Show is the main page rendering action, page routes are aliased in routes.rb def show #-+-+-+-+-Core Page Queries-+-+-+-+- @page = Page.find(params[:id]) @zones = @page.zones.find(:all, :order => 'zones.list_order ASC') @mods = @page.mods.find(:all) @columns = Page.columns # restful params to influence page rendering, see routes.rb @fragment = params[:fragment] # render single module @cluster = params[:cluster] # render single zone @head = params[:head] # render html, body and head #-+-+-+-+-Page Level Json Conversions-+-+-+-+- @metas = @page.metas ? ActiveSupport::JSON.decode(@page.metas) : nil @javascripts = @page.javascripts ? ActiveSupport::JSON.decode(@page.javascripts) : nil #-+-+-+-+-Module Specific Queries-+-+-+-+- # would like to refactor this process @mods.each do |mod| # Reps Module Custom Queries if mod.name == "reps" @reps = User.find(:all, :joins => :roles, :conditions => { :roles => { :name => 'rep' } }) end # Listing-poc Module Custom Queries if mod.name == "listing-poc" limit = params[:limit].to_i < 1 ? 10 : params[:limit] PropertyEntry.update_from_listing(mod.service_url) @properties = PropertyEntry.all(:limit => limit, :order => "city desc") end # Talents-index Module Custom Queries if mod.name == "talents-index" @talent = params[:type] @reps = User.find(:all, :joins => :talents, :conditions => { :talents => { :name => @talent } }) end end respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @page.to_xml( :include => { :zones => { :include => :mods } } ) } format.json { render :json => @page.to_json } format.css # show.css.erb, CSS dependency manager template end end # for property listing ajax request def update_properties limit = params[:limit].to_i < 1 ? 10 : params[:limit] offset = params[:offset] @properties = PropertyEntry.all(:limit => limit, :offset => offset, :order => "city desc") #render :nothing => true end end So imagine a site with a hundred modules and scores of additional controller actions. I think most would agree that it would be much cleaner if I could move that code out and refactor it to behave more like a configuration.

  • Paperclip: "missing" image when uses has_one

    - by EricR
I'm working on a website that allows people who run bed and breakfast businesses to post their accommodations. I would like to require that they include a "profile image" of the accommodation when they post it, but I also want to give them the option to add more images later (this will be developed after). I thought the best thing to do would be to use the Paperclip gem and have a Accommodation and a Photo in my application, the later belonging to the first as an association. A new Photo record is created when they create an Accommodation. It has both id and accommodation_id attributes. However, the image is never uploaded and none of the Paperclip attributes get set (image_file_name: nil, image_content_type: nil, image_file_size: nil), so I get Paperclip's "missing" photo. Any ideas on this one? It's been keeping me stuck for a few days now. Accommodation models/accommodation.rb class Accommodation < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :title, :description, :photo, :thing, :location attr_accessible :title, :description, :thing, :borough, :location, :spaces, :price has_one :photo end controllers/accommodation_controller.erb class AccommodationsController < ApplicationController before_filter :login_required, :only => {:new, :edit} uses_tiny_mce ( :options => { :theme => 'advanced', :theme_advanced_toolbar_location => 'top', :theme_advanced_toolbar_align => 'left', :theme_advanced_buttons1 => 'bold, italic, underline, bullist, numlist, separator, undo, redo', :theme_advanced_buttons2 => '', :theme_advanced_buttons3 => '' }) def index @accommodations = Accommodation.all end def show @accommodation = Accommodation.find(params[:id]) end def new @accommodation = Accommodation.new end def create @accommodation = Accommodation.new(params[:accommodation]) @accommodation.photo = Photo.new(params[:photo]) @accommodation.user_id = current_user.id if @accommodation.save flash[:notice] = "Successfully created your accommodation." render :action => 'show' else render :action => 'new' end end def edit @accommodation = Accommodation.find(params[:id]) end def update @accommodation = Accommodation.find(params[:id]) if @accommodation.update_attributes(params[:accommodation]) flash[:notice] = "Successfully updated accommodation." render :action => 'show' else render :action => 'edit' end end def destroy @accommodation = Accommodation.find(params[:id]) @accommodation.destroy flash[:notice] = "Successfully destroyed accommodation." redirect_to :inkeep end private def check_owner end end views/accommodations/_form.html.erb <%= form_for @accommodation, :html => {:multipart => true} do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> <p> Title<br /> <%= f.text_field :title, :size => 60 %> </p> <p> Description<br /> <%= f.text_area :description, :rows => 17, :cols => 75, :class => "mceEditor" %> </p> <p> Photo<br /> <%= f.file_field :photo %> </p> [... snip ...] <p><%= f.submit %></p> <% end %> Photo The controller and views are still the same as when Rails generated them. models/photo.erb class Photo < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :image_file_name, :image_content_type, :image_file_size belongs_to :accommodation has_attached_file :image, :styles => { :thumb=> "100x100#", :small => "150x150>" } end

  • how to user ajax with json in ruby on rails

    - by fenec
Only 200 characters allowed.</span>"; } } function update_multiple(json) { for( var i=0; i<json["ids_to_update"].length; i++ ) { id=json["ids_to_update"][i]; $(id).innerHTML=json[id]; } } </script> <div id="all_comments" > <%= render :partial=>"comments/comments" %> </div> Talk some trash: <br /> <% remote_form_for Comment.new, :url=>comments_url, :success=>"update_multiple(request)" do |f|%> <%= f.text_area :body, :onchange=>"update_count(this.getValue(),'remaining');" , :onkeyup=>"update_count(this.getValue(),'remaining');" %> <br /> <%= f.submit 'Post'%> <% end %> <p id="remaining" >&nbsp;</p> <p id="form_message" >&nbsp;</p> <br><br> <br> if i try to do alert(json) in the first line of the update_multiple function , i got an [object Object]. if i try to do alert(json["ids_to_update"][0]) in the first line of the update_multiple function , there is no dialog box displayed. however the comment got saved but nothing is updated. questions: 1.how can javascript and rails know that i am dealing with json objects? 2.how can i debug this problem? 3.how can i get it to work?

  • Rails: (Devise) Two different methods for new users?

    - by neezer
I have a Rails 3 app with authentication setup using Devise with the registerable module enabled. I want to have new users who sign up using our outside register form to use the full Devise registerable module, which is happening now. However, I also want the admin user to be able to create new users directly, bypassing (I think) Devise's registerable module. With registerable disabled, my standard UsersController works as I want it to for the admin user, just like any other Rail scaffold. However, now new users can't register on their own. With registerable enabled, my standard UsersController is never called for the new user action (calling Devise::RegistrationsController instead), and my CRUD actions don't seem to work at all (I get dumped back onto my root page with no new user created and no flash message). Here's the log from the request: Started POST "/users" for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-12-20 11:49:31 -0500 Processing by Devise::RegistrationsController#create as HTML Parameters: {"utf8"=>"?", "authenticity_token"=>"18697r4syNNWHfMTkDCwcDYphjos+68rPFsaYKVjo8Y=", "user"=>{"email"=>"[email protected]", "password"=>"[FILTERED]", "password_confirmation"=>"[FILTERED]", "role"=>"manager"}, "commit"=>"Create User"} SQL (0.9ms) ... User Load (0.6ms) SELECT "users".* FROM "users" WHERE ("users"."id" = 2) LIMIT 1 SQL (0.9ms) ... Redirected to http://test-app.local/ Completed 302 Found in 192ms ... but I am able to register new users through the outside form. How can I get both of these methods to work together, such that my admin user can manually create new users and guest users can register on their own? I have my Users controller setup for standard CRUD: class UsersController < ApplicationController load_and_authorize_resource def index @users = User.where("id NOT IN (?)", current_user.id) # don't display the current user in the users list; go to account management to edit current user details end def new @user = User.new end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save flash[:notice] = "#{ @user.email } created." redirect_to users_path else render :action => 'new' end end def edit end def update params[:user].delete(:password) if params[:user][:password].blank? params[:user].delete(:password_confirmation) if params[:user][:password].blank? and params[:user][:password_confirmation].blank? if @user.update_attributes(params[:user]) flash[:notice] = "Successfully updated User." redirect_to users_path else render :action => 'edit' end end def delete end def destroy redirect_to users_path and return if params[:cancel] if @user.destroy flash[:notice] = "#{ @user.email } deleted." redirect_to users_path end end end And my routes setup as follows: TestApp::Application.routes.draw do devise_for :users devise_scope :user do get "/login", :to => "devise/sessions#new", :as => :new_user_session get "/logout", :to => "devise/sessions#destroy", :as => :destroy_user_session end resources :users do get :delete, :on => :member end authenticate :user do root :to => "application#index" end root :to => "devise/session#new" end

  • Form submission info showing up in URL and not working

    - by kcurtin
I am making a Rails 3.1 app and have a signup form that was working fine, but I seemed to have changed something to break it.. I'm using Twitter bootstrap and twitter_bootstrap_form_for gem. I made some change that messed with the formatting of the form fields, but more importantly, when I submit the Sign Up form to create a new User, the information is showing up in the URL and looks like this: EDIT: This is happening in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox http://localhost:3000/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&authenticity_token=UaKG5Y8fuPul2Klx7e2LtdPLTRepBxDM3Zdy8S%2F52W4%3D&user%5Bemail%5D=kevinc%40example.com&user%5Bpassword%5D=testing&user%5Bpassword_confirmation%5D=testing&commit=Sign+Up Here is the code for the form: <div class="span7"> <h3 class="center" id="more">Sign Up Now!</h3> <%= twitter_bootstrap_form_for @user do |user| %> <%= user.email_field :email, :placeholder => '[email protected]' %> <%= user.password_field :password %> <%= user.password_field :password_confirmation, 'Confirm Password' %> <%= user.actions do %> <%= user.submit 'Sign Up' %> <% end %> <% end %> </div> Here is the code for the UsersController: class UsersController < ApplicationController def new @user = User.new end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save redirect_to about_path, :notice => "Signed up!" else render 'new' end end end Not sure if there is more you need but if so let me know! Thank you! Edit: For debugging I tried specifying :post and also using a plain form_for <%= form_for(@user, :method => :post) do |f| %> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :email %> <%= f.email_field :email %> </div> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :password %> <%= f.password_field :password %> </div> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :password_confirmation %> <%= f.password_field :password_confirmation %> </div> <div class="actions"><%= f.submit "Sign Up" %></div> <% end %> This gives me the same problem as above. Adding routes.rb: Auth31::Application.routes.draw do get "home" => "pages#home" get "about" => "pages#about" get "contact" => "pages#contact" get "help" => "pages#help" get "login" => "sessions#new", :as => "login" get "logout" => "sessions#destroy", :as => "logout" get "signup" => "users#new", :as => "signup" root :to => "pages#home" resources :pages resources :users resources :sessions resources :password_resets end

  • Using RJS to replace innerHTML with a real live instance variable.

    - by Steve Cotner
I can't for the life of me get RJS to replace an element's innerHTML with an instance variable's attribute, i.e. something like @thing.name I'll show all the code (simplified from the actual project, but still complete), and I hope the solution will be forehead-slap obvious to someone... In RoR, I've made a simple page displaying a random Chinese character. This is a Word object with attributes chinese and english. Clicking on a link titled "What is this?" reveals the english attribute using RJS. Currently, it also hides the "What is this?" link and reveals a "Try Another?" link that just reloads the page, effectively starting over with a new random character. This is fine, but there are other elements on the page that make their own database queries, so I would like to load a new random character by an AJAX call, leaving the rest of the page alone. This has turned out to be harder than I expected: I have no trouble replacing the html using link_remote_to and page.replace_html, but I can't get it to display anything that includes an instance variable. I have a Word resource and a Page resource, which has a home page, where all this fun takes place. In the PagesController, I've made a couple ways to get random words. Either one works fine... Here's the code: class PagesController < ApplicationController def home all_words = Word.find(:all) @random_word = all_words.rand @random_words = Word.find(:all, :limit => 100, :order => 'rand()') @random_first = @random_words[1] end end As an aside, the SQL call with :limit => 100 is just in case I think of some way to cycle through those random words. Right now it's not useful. Also, the 'rand()' is MySQL specific, as far as I know. In the home page view (it's HAML), I have this: #character_box = render(:partial => "character", :object => @random_word) if @random_word #whatisthis = link_to_remote "? what is this?", :url => { :controller => 'words', :action => 'reveal_character' }, :html => { :title => "Click for the translation." } #tryanother.{:style => "display:none"} = link_to "try another?", root_path Note that the #'s in this case represent divs (with the given ids), not comments, because this is HAML. The "character" partial looks like this (it's erb, for no real reason): <div id="character"> <%= "#{@random_word.chinese}" } %> </div> <div id="revealed" style="display:none"> <ul> <li><span id="english"><%= "#{@random_word.english_name}" %></span></li> </ul> </div> The reveal_character.rjs file looks like this: page[:revealed].visual_effect :slide_down, :duration => '.2' page[:english].visual_effect :highlight, :startcolor => "#ffff00", :endcolor => "#ffffff", :duration => '2.5' page.delay(0.8) do page[:whatisthis].visual_effect :fade, :duration => '.3' page[:tryanother].visual_effect :appear end That all works perfectly fine. But if I try to turn link_to "try another?" into link_to_remote, and point it to an RJS template that replaces the "character" element with something new, it only works when I replace the innerHTML with static text. If I try to pass an instance variable in there, it never works. For instance, let's say I've defined a second random word under Pages#home... I'll add @random_second = @random_words[2] there. Then, in the home page view, I'll replace the "try another?" link (previously pointing to the root_path), with this: = link_to_remote "try another?", :url => { :controller => 'words', :action => 'second_character' }, :html => { :title => "Click for a new character." } I'll make that new RJS template, at app/views/words/second_character.rjs, and a simple test like this shows that it's working: page.replace_html("character", "hi") But if I change it to this: page.replace_html("character", "#{@random_second.english}") I get an error saying I fed it a nil object: ActionView::TemplateError (undefined method `english_name' for nil:NilClass) on line #1 of app/views/words/second_character.rjs: 1: page.replace_html("character", "#{@random_second.english}") Of course, actually instantiating @random_second, @random_third and so on ad infinitum would be ridiculous in a real app (I would eventually figure out some better way to keep grabbing a new random record without reloading the page), but the point is that I don't know how to get any instance variable to work here. This is not even approaching my ideal solution of rendering a partial that includes the object I specify, like this: page.replace_html 'character', :partial => 'new_character', :object => @random_second As I can't get an instance variable to work directly, I obviously cannot get it to work via a partial. I have tried various things like: :object => @random_second or :locals => { :random_second => @random_second } I've tried adding these all over the place -- in the link_to_remote options most obviously -- and studying what gets passed in the parameters, but to no avail. It's at this point that I realize I don't know what I'm doing. This is my first question here. I erred on the side of providing all necessary code, rather than being brief. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Rails validation count limit on has_many :through

    - by Jeremy
I've got the following models: Team, Member, Assignment, Role The Team model has_many Members. Each Member has_many roles through assignments. Role assignments are Captain and Runner. I have also installed devise and CanCan using the Member model. What I need to do is limit each Team to have a max of 1 captain and 5 runners. I found this example, and it seemed to work after some customization, but on update ('teams/1/members/4/edit'). It doesn't work on create ('teams/1/members/new'). But my other validation (validates :role_ids, :presence = true ) does work on both update and create. Any help would be appreciated. Update: I've found this example that would seem to be similar to my problem but I can't seem to make it work for my app. It seems that the root of the problem lies with how the count (or size) is performed before and during validation. For Example: When updating a record... It checks to see how many runners there are on a team and returns a count. (i.e. 5) Then when I select a role(s) to add to the member it takes the known count from the database (i.e. 5) and adds the proposed changes (i.e. 1), and then runs the validation check. (Team.find(self.team_id).members.runner.count 5) This works fine because it returns a value of 6 and 6 5 so the proposed update fails without saving and an error is given. But when I try to create a new member on the team... It checks to see how many runners there are on a team and returns a count. (i.e. 5) Then when I select a role(s) to add to the member it takes the known count from the database (i.e. 5) and then runs the validation check WITHOUT factoring in the proposed changes. This doesn't work because it returns a value of 5 known runner and 5 = 5 so the proposed update passes and the new member and role is saved to the database with no error. Member Model: class Member < ActiveRecord::Base devise :database_authenticatable, :registerable, :recoverable, :rememberable, :trackable, :validatable attr_accessible :password, :password_confirmation, :remember_me attr_accessible :age, :email, :first_name, :last_name, :sex, :shirt_size, :team_id, :assignments_attributes, :role_ids belongs_to :team has_many :assignments, :dependent => :destroy has_many :roles, through: :assignments accepts_nested_attributes_for :assignments scope :runner, joins(:roles).where('roles.title = ?', "Runner") scope :captain, joins(:roles).where('roles.title = ?', "Captain") validate :validate_runner_count validate :validate_captain_count validates :role_ids, :presence => true def validate_runner_count if Team.find(self.team_id).members.runner.count > 5 errors.add(:role_id, 'Error - Max runner limit reached') end end def validate_captain_count if Team.find(self.team_id).members.captain.count > 1 errors.add(:role_id, 'Error - Max captain limit reached') end end def has_role?(role_sym) roles.any? { |r| r.title.underscore.to_sym == role_sym } end end Member Controller: class MembersController < ApplicationController load_and_authorize_resource :team load_and_authorize_resource :member, :through => :team before_filter :get_team before_filter :initialize_check_boxes, :only => [:create, :update] def get_team @team = Team.find(params[:team_id]) end def index respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.json { render json: @members } end end def show respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.json { render json: @member } end end def new respond_to do |format| format.html # new.html.erb format.json { render json: @member } end end def edit end def create respond_to do |format| if @member.save format.html { redirect_to [@team, @member], notice: 'Member was successfully created.' } format.json { render json: [@team, @member], status: :created, location: [@team, @member] } else format.html { render action: "new" } format.json { render json: @member.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end def update respond_to do |format| if @member.update_attributes(params[:member]) format.html { redirect_to [@team, @member], notice: 'Member was successfully updated.' } format.json { head :no_content } else format.html { render action: "edit" } format.json { render json: @member.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end def destroy @member.destroy respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to team_members_url } format.json { head :no_content } end end # Allow empty checkboxes # http://railscasts.com/episodes/17-habtm-checkboxes def initialize_check_boxes params[:member][:role_ids] ||= [] end end _Form Partial <%= form_for [@team, @member], :html => { :class => 'form-horizontal' } do |f| %> #... # testing the count... <ul> <li>Captain - <%= Team.find(@member.team_id).members.captain.size %></li> <li>Runner - <%= Team.find(@member.team_id).members.runner.size %></li> <li>Driver - <%= Team.find(@member.team_id).members.driver.size %></li> </ul> <div class="control-group"> <div class="controls"> <%= f.fields_for :roles do %> <%= hidden_field_tag "member[role_ids][]", nil %> <% Role.all.each do |role| %> <%= check_box_tag "member[role_ids][]", role.id, @member.role_ids.include?(role.id), id: dom_id(role) %> <%= label_tag dom_id(role), role.title %> <% end %> <% end %> </div> </div> #... <% end %>

  • ruby on rails has_many through relationship

    - by BennyB
Hi i'm having a little trouble with a has_many through relationship for my app and was hoping to find some help. So i've got Users & Lectures. Lectures are created by one user but then other users can then "join" the Lectures that have been created. Users have their own profile feed of the Lectures they have created & also have a feed of Lectures friends have created. This question however is not about creating a lecture but rather "Joining" a lecture that has been created already. I've created a "lecturerelationships" model & controller to handle this relationship between Lectures & the Users who have Joined (which i call "actives"). Users also then MUST "Exit" the Lecture (either by clicking "Exit" or navigating to one of the header navigation links). I'm grateful if anyone can work through some of this with me... I've got: Users.rb model Lectures.rb model Users_controller Lectures_controller then the following model lecturerelationship.rb class lecturerelationship < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :active_id, :joinedlecture_id belongs_to :active, :class_name => "User" belongs_to :joinedlecture, :class_name => "Lecture" validates :active_id, :presence => true validates :joinedlecture_id, :presence => true end lecturerelationships_controller.rb class LecturerelationshipsController < ApplicationController before_filter :signed_in_user def create @lecture = Lecture.find(params[:lecturerelationship][:joinedlecture_id]) current_user.join!(@lecture) redirect_to @lecture end def destroy @lecture = Lecturerelationship.find(params[:id]).joinedlecture current_user.exit!(@user) redirect_to @user end end Lectures that have been created (by friends) show up on a users feed in the following file _activity_item.html.erb <li id="<%= activity_item.id %>"> <%= link_to gravatar_for(activity_item.user, :size => 200), activity_item.user %><br clear="all"> <%= render :partial => 'shared/join', :locals => {:activity_item => activity_item} %> <span class="title"><%= link_to activity_item.title, lecture_url(activity_item) %></span><br clear="all"> <span class="user"> Joined by <%= link_to activity_item.user.name, activity_item.user %> </span><br clear="all"> <span class="timestamp"> <%= time_ago_in_words(activity_item.created_at) %> ago. </span> <% if current_user?(activity_item.user) %> <%= link_to "delete", activity_item, :method => :delete, :confirm => "Are you sure?", :title => activity_item.content %> <% end %> </li> Then you see I link to the the 'shared/join' partial above which can be seen in the file below _join.html.erb <%= form_for(current_user.lecturerelationships.build(:joinedlecture_id => activity_item.id)) do |f| %> <div> <%= f.hidden_field :joinedlecture_id %> </div> <%= f.submit "Join", :class => "btn btn-large btn-info" %> <% end %> Some more files that might be needed: config/routes.rb SampleApp::Application.routes.draw do resources :users do member do get :following, :followers, :joined_lectures end end resources :sessions, :only => [:new, :create, :destroy] resources :lectures, :only => [:create, :destroy, :show] resources :relationships, :only => [:create, :destroy] #for users following each other resources :lecturerelationships, :only => [:create, :destroy] #users joining existing lectures So what happens is the lecture comes in my activity_feed with a Join button option at the bottom...which should create a lecturerelationship of an "active" & "joinedlecture" (which obviously are supposed to be coming from the user & lecture classes. But the error i get when i click the join button is as follows: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in LecturerelationshipsController#create SQLite3::ConstraintException: constraint failed: INSERT INTO "lecturerelationships" ("active_id", "created_at", "joinedlecture_id", "updated_at") VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?) Also i've included my user model (seems the error is referring to it) user.rb class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :email, :name, :password, :password_confirmation has_secure_password has_many :lectures, :dependent => :destroy has_many :lecturerelationships, :foreign_key => "active_id", :dependent => :destroy has_many :joined_lectures, :through => :lecturerelationships, :source => :joinedlecture before_save { |user| user.email = email.downcase } before_save :create_remember_token validates :name, :presence => true, :length => { :maximum => 50 } VALID_EMAIL_REGEX = /\A[\w+\-.]+@[a-z\d\-.]+\.[a-z]+\z/i validates :email, :presence => true, :format => { :with => VALID_EMAIL_REGEX }, :uniqueness => { :case_sensitive => false } validates :password, :presence => true, :length => { :minimum => 6 } validates :password_confirmation, :presence => true def activity # This feed is for "My Activity" - basically lectures i've started Lecture.where("user_id = ?", id) end def friendactivity Lecture.from_users_followed_by(self) end # lECTURE TO USER (JOINING) RELATIONSHIPS def joined?(selected_lecture) lecturerelationships.find_by_joinedlecture_id(selected_lecture.id) end def join!(selected_lecture) lecturerelationships.create!(:joinedlecture_id => selected_lecture.id) end def exit!(selected_lecture) lecturerelationships.find_by_joinedlecture_id(selected_lecture.id).destroy end end Thanks for any and all help - i'll be on here for a while so as mentioned i'd GREATLY appreciate someone who may have the time to work through my issues with me...

  • No method error in controller create action

    - by user2799827
I have read a number of Q&As on SO in search of some help on this but have so far not solved my issue. I am trying to teach myself ruby/rails, and as a test project, I want to create a list of tvshows and a list of characters where each tvshow has_many characters and each character belongs_to a specific show. I am sure I am doing something basic incorrectly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. here is the characters controller: class CharactersController < ApplicationController before_action :set_character, only: [:show, :edit, :update, :destroy] • What do I need to change to get this 'acts_as_rateable' Rails plugin working with this code from the

    - by tepidsam
Hello! I'm working my way through the 'Foundation Rails 2' book. In Chapter 9, we are building a little "plugins" app. In the book, he installs the acts_as_rateable plugin found at http://juixe.com/svn/acts_as_rateable. This plugin doesn't appear to exist in 2010 (the page for this "old" plugin seems to be working again...it was down when I tried it earlier), so I found another acts_as_rateable plugin at http://github.com/azabaj/acts_as_rateable. These plugins are different and I'm trying to get the "new" plugin working with the code/project/app from the Foudations 2 book. I was able to use the migration generator included with the "new" plugin and it worked. Now,though, I'm a bit confused. In the book, he has us create a new controller to work with the plugin (the old plugin). Here's the code for that: class RatingsController < ApplicationController def create @plugin = Plugin.find(params[:plugin_id]) rating = Rating.new(:rating => params[:rating]) @plugin.ratings << average_rating redirect_to @plugin end end Then he had us change the routing: map.resources :plugins, :has_many => :ratings map.resources :categories map.root :controller => 'plugins' Next, we modified the following to the 'show' template so that it looks like this: <div id="rate_plugin"> <h2>Rate this plugin</h2> <ul class="star-rating"> <li> <%= link_to "1", @plugin.rate_it(1), :method => :post, :title => "1 star out of 5", :class => "one-star" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "2", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 2), :method => :post, :title => "2 stars out of 5", :class => "two-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "3", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 3), :method => :post, :title => "3 stars out of 5", :class => "three-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "4", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 4), :method => :post, :title => "4 stars out of 5", :class => "four-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "5", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 5), :method => :post, :title => "5 stars out of 5", :class => "five-stars" %> </li> </ul> </div> The problem is that we're using code for a different plugin. When I try to actually "rate" one of the plugins, I get an "unknown attribute" error. That makes sense. I'm using attribute names for the "old" plugin, but I should be using attributes names for the "new" plugin. The problem is...I've tried using a variety of different attribute names and I keep getting the same error. From the README for the "new" plugin, I think I should be using some of these but I haven't been able to get them working: Install the plugin into your vendor/plugins directory, insert 'acts_as_rateable' into your model, then restart your application. class Post < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_rateable end Now your model is extended by the plugin, you can rate it ( 1-# )or calculate the average rating. @plugin.rate_it( 4, current_user.id ) @plugin.average_rating #=> 4.0 @plugin.average_rating_round #=> 4 @plugin.average_rating_percent #=> 80 @plugin.rated_by?( current_user ) #=> rating || false Plugin.find_average_of( 4 ) #=> array of posts See acts_as_rateable.rb for further details! I'm guessing that I might have to make some "bigger" changes to get this plugin working. I'm asking this question to learn and only learn. The book gives code to get things working with the old plugin, but if one were actually building this app today it would be necessary to use this "new" plugin, so I would like to see how it could be used. Cheers! Any ideas on what I could change to get the "new" plugin working?

  • Custom rails route problem with 2.3.8 and Mongrel

    - by CHsurfer
I have a controller called 'exposures' which I created automatically with the script/generate scaffold call. The scaffold pages work fine. I created a custom action called 'test' in the exposures controller. When I try to call the page (http://127.0.0.1:3000/exposures/test/1) I get a blank, white screen with no text at all in the source. I am using Rails 2.3.8 and mongrel in the development environment. There are no entries in development.log and the console that was used to open mongrel has the following error: You might have expected an instance of Array. • "PGError: no connection to the server" after idle

    - by user573484
After my application sits idle overnight, when I try to access it in the morning I get a 500 Internal server error and the logs indicate "PGError: no connection to the server". After this first request if I refresh the page again everything is fine. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with apache 2, Passenger 3.0.2, Rails 2.3.8, and Postgres 8.4 on a remote server. Any ideas how to fix this?
