• Javascript form validation events

  Hi All, I am making a small form for a php app and had a question regarding javascript validation. What is the best event to run the javascript validation on the input value? Is it the "focusout" event? I used "focusout" to originally but it creates problems when the user hits enter while they are still focused on any particular field in the form. Should I run the js validation when the user clicks submit? Just looking for some advice. Thanks! Chuck

• Why in Objective-C, we use self = [super init] instead of just [super init]?

  In a book, I saw that if a subclass is overriding a superclass's method, we may have self = [super init]; First, is this supposed to be done in the subclass's init method? Second, I wonder why the call is not just [super init]; ? I mean, at the time of calling init, the memory is allocated by alloc already (I think by [Foobar alloc] where Foobar is the subclass's name. So can't we just call [super init] to initialize the member variables? Why do we have to get the return value of init and assign to self? I mean, before calling [super init], self should be pointing to a valid memory allocation chuck... so why assigning something to self again? (if assigning, won't [super init] just return self's existing value?)

• T-SQL Getting duplicate rows returned

  The following code section is returning multiple columns for a few records. SELECT a.ClientID,ltrim(rtrim(c.FirstName)) + ' ' + case when c.MiddleName <> '' then ltrim(rtrim(c.MiddleName)) + '. ' else '' end + ltrim(rtrim(c.LastName)) as ClientName, a.MISCode, b.Address, b.City, dbo.ClientGetEnrolledPrograms(CONVERT(int,a.ClientID)) as Abbreviation FROM ClientDetail a JOIN Address b on(a.PersonID = b.PersonID) JOIN Person c on(a.PersonID = c.PersonID) LEFT JOIN ProgramEnrollments d on(d.ClientID = a.ClientID and d.Status = 'Enrolled' and d.HistoricalPKID is null) LEFT JOIN Program e on(d.ProgramID = e.ProgramID and e.HistoricalPKID is null) WHERE a.MichiganWorksData=1 I've isolated the issue to the ProgramEnrollments table. This table holds one-to-many relationships where each ClientID can be enrolled in many programs. So for each program a client is enrolled in, there is a record in the table. The final result set is therefore returning a row for each row in the ProgramEnrollments table based on these joins. I presume my join is the issue but I don't see the problem. Thoughts/Suggestions? • Mono on Linux: Apache or Nginx

  Hi, I'm developing an ASP.NET application that will be run under Linux/Mono for various reasons (mostly to stay away from IIS, quite frankly). Of course the first web server I had in mind was Apache. But Apache, for all its advantages, adds a lot of overhead. Also, the application I'm building needs to be highly scalable and performance is one of the main concern. Apache has, obviously, a very good reputation and its record speaks for itself, but I don't need things like Reverse Proxy or Load Balancing because dedicated network devices would be used for that. So those modules from Apache will never be used. So basically my question is: since Nginx seems to fit exactly needs, is there any caveat I should be aware of? For instance, is Nginx renowned to be particularity safe? When security flaws are detected, how fast are they patched? Any insight on the pros and cons of using either of those servers in conjunction with Mono is welcome.

  I cannot get wget to use the client certificates. The documentation speaks about using the --certificate flag. The use of the certificate flag is clear, I set it to use the PEM version of the client certificate. But when I connect I get the following error: HTTP request sent, awaiting response... Read error (error:14094410:SSL routines: SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert handshake failure; error:140940E5:SSL routines:SSL3_ READ_BYTES:ssl handshake failure) in headers. Giving up. ssl handshake failure means the client did not supply a correct client cert. Still the client cert I use, works in a browser. Note: When I disable client authentication on the server, wget can connect. Note: The use of curl is suggested, but I'd like to avoid the switch.

• How to "host' an application on one mac and run it on another

  I recently replaced my mac computer and would like to know if it is possible to run software on that computer that actually runs on another computer. My problem is that I use a terminal emulator that speaks SCO-ANSI on my old computer, but it is not compatible with the new version of OS X. I don't want to pay the exorbitant ($200+) licensing fee to get a current version of the software, so I'd like to know if it's possible to run the emulator on the old computer and just "stream" its window somehow to my new Mac computer. Is this possible? Thanks very much!!!

• Product Recommendation: Good job scheduler for windows servers?

  Looking for a mostly-GUI tool that is low cost (less then $1k, but not required) and allows you to create scheduled tasks and jobs without writing vbscript, batch files, or powershell. Something simple that speaks SMB/CIFS, SMTP, LDAP, etc. for such things as "delete some files based on a list of folders from this text file" or "disable all users with expired accounts" or "delete all disabled users not in this AD group". I've seen some of the big multi-OS enterprise task automation systems and they just look way overkill. We're a windows-only shop, Server 2003 or newer and there's got to be a simple non-agent based product that is drag-n-drop for some of this basic automation. Today we use all three languages mentioned above, and the scripts are not as reliable as a workflow-based-tool would be. Thanks.

• Palm software that can turn the Palm IR keyboard into a Bluetooth keyboard for PC?

  I had this kooky idea this morning. I love my foldout palm keyboard, but it only speaks IR to my Palm Treo. But it also has a Bluetooth radio so I thought wouldn't it be just keen to have a program that runs on the Treo that reads from the IR the keyboard and exposes it as a Bluetooth keyboard for a PC. I realize I'm way late to the game because there's so little information about the Palm anymore. I was thinking of writing this software if it wasn't too big of a deal, but I figured I'd see if anybody knew of such a project already in existence or something like it that I could piggyback off of. Not even sure if I can get the Palm OS Developers' kit anymore....

• How to check if cell contains a value of another cell

  Here is the scenario: On column A each cell has random text within it (names, address, account numbers, etc). Column A extends down to over 40 thousand rows. On column B I have a list of (account) numbers. Column B extends down to about 5 thousand rows. I need to filter column A to show only the rows that contain the account numbers that are part of column B. Neither column A nor B are in any specific order. I think he above scenario speaks for itself, but I can provide a quick example if needed (don't want to over complicate it).

  since yesterday my firefox thinks that everyone in belgium speaks flemish. this is a typically american problem: americans NEVER seem to know where languages are spoken (i think they just guess) but for some reason believe that language localization software is cool. it is NOT, it is a curse. so suddenly i no longer have my user interface in english (which was fine) but now in flemish, which looks and reads like a tongue disease and is not even the second language of the area i live in (first language here is german, second is french). how can i change back to english?

• So, "Are Design Patterns Missing Language Features"?

  I saw the answer to this question: How does thinking on design patterns and OOP practices change in dynamic and weakly-typed languages? There it is a link to an article with an outspoken title: Are Design Patterns Missing Language Features. But where you can get snippets that seem very objective and factual and that can be verified from experience like: PaulGraham said "Peter Norvig found that 16 of the 23 patterns in Design Patterns were 'invisible or simpler' in Lisp." and a thing that confirms what I recently seen with people trying to simulate classes in javascript: Of course, nobody ever speaks of the "function" pattern, or the "class" pattern, or numerous other things that we take for granted because most languages provide them as built-in features. OTOH, programmers in a purely PrototypeOrientedLanguage? might well find it convenient to simulate classes with prototypes... I am taking into consideration also that design patterns are a communcation tool and because even with my limited experience participating in building applications I can see as an anti-pattern(ineffective and/or counterproductive) for example forcing a small PHP team to learn GoF patterns for small to medium intranet app, I am aware that scale, scope and purpose can determine what is effective and/or productive. I saw small commercial applications that mixed functional with OOP and still be maintainable, and I don't know if many would need for example in python to write a singleton but for me a simple module does the thing. patterns So are there studies or hands on experience shared that takes into consideration, all this, scale and scope of project, dynamics and size of the team, languages and technologies, so that you don't feel that a (difficult for some)design pattern is there just because there isn't a simpler way to do it or that it cannot be done by a language feature?

• Web.NET event coming in October

It’s being organized by two Italian web maestros (Simone Chiaretta and Ugo Lattanzi) and the session list looks fantastic. The event site pretty much speaks for itself, but here’s a quick version: It’s a free one-day event on October 20th, with a huge variety of great sessions by great speakers, all 100% focused on web development. • Energy Firms Targetted for Sensitive Documents

  Numerous multinational energy companies have been targeted by hackers who have been focusing on financial documents related to oil and gas field exploration, bidding contracts, and drilling rights, as well as proprietary industrial process documents, according to a new McAfee report. "It ... speaks to quite a sad state of our critical infrastructure security. These were not sophisticated attacks ... yet they were very successful in achieving their goals," said Dmitri Alperovitch, McAfee's vice president for threat research. Apparently, the attacks can be traced back over several years, creating a sustained security compromise that has provided access to highly sensitive information that is of huge financial value to competitors. The value of IRM as an additional layer of protection is clear. Whether your infrastructure security is in a sad state or is state of the art, breaches are always a possibility - and in any case, a lot of sensitive information is shared with third parties whose infrastructure security might not be as good as yours. IRM protects the individual information assets directly so that, even if infrastructure security is compromised, your critical information is enrypted and trackable and only accessible to authenticated, authorised, audited users. I find this a disappointing definition. Anyone who knows the words programming and paradigm could do about that well without knowing anything else about it. There are many styles of computer programming at many level of abstraction; within any given programming paradigm, multiple styles are possible. For example, Bob Martin says in Clean Code (13), Consider this book a description of the Object Mentor School of Clean Code. The techniques and teachings within are the way that we practice our art. We are willing to claim that if you follow these teachings, you will enjoy the benefits that we have enjoyed, and you will learn to write code that is clean and professional. But don't make the mistake of thinking that we are somehow "right" in any absolute sense. Thus Bob Martin is not claiming to have the correct style of Object-Oriented programming, even though he, if anyone, might have some claim to doing so. But even within his school of programming, we might have different styles of formatting the code (K&R, etc). There are many styles of programming at many levels. Sp how can we define programming paradigm rigorously, to distinguish it from other categories of programming styles? Fundamental is somewhat helpful, but not specific. How can we define the phrase in a way that will communicate more than the separate meanings of each of the two words—in other words, how can we define it in a way that will provide additional meaning for someone who speaks English but isn't familiar with a variety of paradigms?

• Functional testing in the verification

  Yesterday my question How come verification does not include actual testing? created a lot of controversy, yet did not reveal the answer for related and very important question: does black box functional testing done by testers belong to verification or validation? ISO 12207:12208 here mentiones testing explicitly only as a validation activity, however, it speaks about validation of requirements of the intended use. For me its more high level, like UAT test cases written by business users ISO mentioned above does not mention any specific verification (7.2.4.3.2)except for Requirement verification, Design verification, Document and Code & Integration verification. The last two can be probably thought as unit and integrated testing. But where is then the regular testing done by testers at the end of the phase? The book I mentioned in the original question mentiones that verification is done by static techniques, yet on the V model graph it describes System testing against high level description as a verification, mentioning it includes all kinds of testing like functional, load etc. In the IEEE standard for V&V, you can read this: Even though the tests and evaluations are not part of the V&V processes, the techniques described in this standard may be useful in performing them. So that is different than in ISO, where validation mentiones testing as the activity. Not to mention a lot of contradicting information on the net. I would really appreciate a reference to e.g. a standard in the answer or explanation of what I missed in the ISO. For me, I am unable to tell where the testers work belong.

• How to fix "Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present"?

  After I updated BIOS/UEFI version to 1101 on an Asus P8Z68-V PRO motherboard Ubuntu (11.10) did not boot. After POST all I saw was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I booted an Ubuntu 11.10 live-CD and set the flag for the 20 MB partition before my boot partition to "bios_grub". Then I was able to boot and login. But now every time I boot and Ubuntu loads I get the following message: Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present. Continue waiting or press s to skip or m for manual recovery. I am able to login if I choose to ignore it by pressing s, but what does this message mean? How can I fix what the message warns about? After logging in I have noticed that /boot/efi is empty. The following forum post speaks of the same issue ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1893030. Updating to the latest BIOS/UEFI - version 3203, did not have any effect on this issue.

• Why the clip space in OpenGL has 4 dimensions?

  I will use this as a generic reference, but the more i browser online docs and books, the less i understand about this. const float vertexPositions[] = { 0.75f, 0.75f, 0.0f, 1.0f, 0.75f, -0.75f, 0.0f, 1.0f, -0.75f, -0.75f, 0.0f, 1.0f, }; in this online book there is an example about how to draw the first and classic hello world for OpenGL about making a triangle. The vertex structure for the triangle is declared as stated in the code above. The book, as all the other sources about this, stress the point that the Clip Space is a 4D structure that is used to basically decide what will be rasterized and rendered to the screen. Here I have my questions: i can't imagine something in 4D, i don't think that a human can do that, what is a 4D for this Clip space ? the most human-readable doc that i have read speaks about a camera, which is just an abstraction over the clipping concept, and i get that, the problem is, why not using the concept of a camera in the first place which is a more familiar 3D structure? The only problem with the concept of a camera is that you need to define the prospective in other way and so you basically have to add another statement about what kind of camera you wish to have. How i'm supposed to read this 0.75f, 0.75f, 0.0f, 1.0f ? All i get is that they are all float values and i get the meaning of the first 3 values, what does it mean the last one?

• No audio in Google Chrome

  I started with Ubuntu 12.04 Minimal. Then installed only 3 utils sudo apt-get install xorg xinit google-chrome-stable alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-oss I have added google-chrome to .xinitrc file. Used sudo alsamixer to unmute everything using M. Also I am able to hear sound when I run this independently in a terminal sudo aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav However Google Chrome is not giving any sound output be it on youtube or the same file (/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav) opened by browsing in chrome. UPDATE : the moment i install some Desktop (display) Manager like gnome or lxde and launch chrome then, the audio is perfect success. However if i kill the xsession and the desktop manager (lxde) AND then start with loading only the chrome (without DM) then again i loose the sound. This makes me wonder that there is something which is not allowing the sound to be loaded into chrome directly, but once the session like lxde loads, then it works flawless. I am thinking that i should rather ask, how to authorize google-chrome to use sound software? Miscellaneous : I am surprised to know that I cannot start google-chrome by sudo command (it asks to be a normal user) && that i cannot start alsamixer as a normal user (i must use sudo alsamixer ) May someone please help what i need to do so that google chrome speaks????
