  • Friendly way to override `const`-overloaded member function?

    - by xtofl
    Given a base class class A { int i; public: int& f(){ return i;} const int& f() const { return i;} }; And a sub class class ConstA : private A { public: const int& f() const { return A::f(); } }; Is there a wrist-friendly way to access the ConstA::f method on a non-const variable? ConstA ca; int i = ca.f(); // compile error: int& A::f() is not accessible since A is privately inherited int j = static_cast<const ConstA&>(ca).f(); // this works, but it hurts a little... Or is it so ugly since hiding A::f generally is a bad idea, violating the Liskov Substitution Principle: any subclass of A must at least be capable of all A's functionality? void set( A& a, int i ) { a.f() = i; } class ConstA2 : public A { private: int& f(){ return A::f(); } }; ConstA2 ca2; set( ca2, 1 ); (Note: this question popped up while thinking about this question)

  • template pass by const reference

    - by 7vies
    Hi, I've looked over a few similar questions, but I'm still confused. I'm trying to figure out how to explicitly (not by compiler optimization etc) and C++03-compatible avoid copying of an object when passing it to a template function. Here is my test code: #include <iostream> using namespace std; struct C { C() { cout << "C()" << endl; } C(const C&) { cout << "C(C)" << endl; } ~C() { cout << "~C()" << endl; } }; template<class T> void f(T) { cout << "f<T>" << endl; } template<> void f(C c) { cout << "f<C>" << endl; } // (1) template<> void f(const C& c) { cout << "f<C&>" << endl; } // (2) int main() { C c; f(c); return 0; } (1) accepts the object of type C, and makes a copy. Here is the output: C() C(C) f<C> ~C() ~C() So I've tried to specialize with a const C& parameter (2) to avoid this, but this simply doesn't work (apparently the reason is explained in this question). Well, I could "pass by pointer", but that's kind of ugly. So is there some trick that would allow to do that somehow nicely? EDIT: Oh, probably I wasn't clear. I already have a templated function template<class T> void f(T) {...} But now I want to specialize this function to accept a const& to another object: template<> void f(const SpecificObject&) {...} But it only gets called if I define it as template<> void f(SpecificObject) {...}

  • C++: Retriving values of static const variables at a constructor of a static variable

    - by gilbertc
    I understand that the code below would result segmentation fault because at the cstr of A, B::SYMBOL was not initialized yet. But why? In reality, A is an object that serves as a map that maps the SYMBOLs of classes like B to their respective IDs. C holds this map(A) static-ly such that it can provide the mapping as a class function. The primary function of A is to serve as a map for C that initializes itself at startup. How should I be able to do that without segmentation fault, provided that I can still use B::ID and B::SYMBOL in the code (no #define pls)? Thanks! Gil. class A { public: A() { std::cout<<B::ID<<std::endl; std::cout<<B::SYMBOL<<std::endl; } }; class B { public: static const int ID; static const std::string SYMBOL; } const int B::ID = 1; const std::string B::SYMBOL = "B"; class C { public: static A s_A; }; A C::s_A; int main(int c, char** p) { }

  • sizeof abuse : get the size of a const table

    - by shodanex
    When declaring a const table, it is possible to get the size of the table using sizeof. However, once you stop using the symbol name, it does not work anymore. is there a way to have the following program output the correct size for table A, instead of 0 ? #include <stdio.h> struct mystruct { int a; short b; }; const struct mystruct tableA[] ={ { .a = 1, .b = 2, }, { .a = 2, .b = 2, }, { .a = 3, .b = 2, }, }; const struct mystruct tableB[] ={ { .a = 1, .b = 2, }, { .a = 2, .b = 2, }, }; int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { int tbl_sz; const struct mystruct * table; table = tableA; tbl_sz = sizeof(table)/sizeof(struct mystruct); printf("size of table A : %d\n", tbl_sz); table = tableB; tbl_sz = sizeof(tableB)/sizeof(struct mystruct); printf("size of table B : %d\n", tbl_sz); return 0; } Output is : size of table A : 0 size of table B : 2

  • Simplest way to automatically alter "const" value in Java during compile time

    - by Michael Mao
    Hi all: This is a question corresponds to my uni assignment so I am very sorry to say I cannot adopt any one of the following best practices in a short time -- you know -- assignment is due tomorrow :( link to Best way to alter const in Java on StackOverflow Basically the only task (I hope so) left for me is the performance tuning. I've got a bunch of predefined "const" values in my single-class agent source code like this: //static final values private static final long FT_THRESHOLD = 400; private static final long FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = 50; private static final long FT_SMOOTH_PRICE_IDICATOR = 20; private static final long FT_BUY_PRICE_MODIFIER = 0; private static final long FT_LAST_ROUNDS_STARTTIME = 90; private static final long FT_AMOUNT_ADJUST_MODIFIER = 5; private static final long FT_HISTORY_PIRCES_LENGTH = 10; private static final long FT_TRACK_DURATION = 5; private static final int MAX_BED_BID_NUM_PER_AUC = 12; I can definitely alter the values manually and then compile the code to give it another go around. But the execution time for a thorough "statistic analysis" usually requires over 2000 times of execution, which will typically lasts more than half an hour on my own laptop... So I hope there is a way to alter values using other ways than dig into the source code to change the "const" values there, so I can automatically distributed compiled code to other people's PC and let them run the statistic analysis instead. One other reason for a automatically value adjustment is that I can try using my own agent to defeat itself by choosing different "const" values. Although my values are derived from previous history and statistical results, they are far from the most optimized values. I hope there is a easy way so I can quickly adopt that so to have a good sleep tonight while the computer does everything for me... :) Any hints on this sort of stuff? Any suggestion is welcomed and much appreciated.

  • why BOOST_FOREACH cannot handle const boost::ptr_map?

  • SQL Server cast fails with arithmetic overflow

    - by Jamie Ide
    According to the entry for decimal and numeric data types in SQL Server 2008 Books Online, precision is: p (precision) The maximum total number of decimal digits that can be stored, both to the left and to the right of the decimal point. The precision must be a value from 1 through the maximum precision of 38. The default precision is 18. However, the second select below fails with "Arithmetic overflow error converting int to data type numeric." SELECT CAST(123456789 as decimal(9,0)) SELECT CAST(123456789 as decimal(9,1))

  • How can I cast authoritatively in asp classic?

    - by Tchalvak
    In asp classic, the cint() function or procedure or whatever it is won't allow me to cast arbitrary strings, like "bob" or "null" or anything like that. Is there anything that will allow me to simply cast integers, numeric strings, and arbitrary strings to actual integers, with some sane default like 0 for strings?

  • Intermittent "Specified cast is invalid" with StructureMap injected data context

    - by FreshCode
    I am intermittently getting an System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid. error in my repository layer when performing an abstracted SELECT query mapped with LINQ. The error can't be caused by a mismatched database schema since it works intermittently and it's on my local dev machine. Could it be because StructureMap is caching the data context between page requests? If so, how do I tell StructureMap v2.6.1 to inject a new data context argument into my repository for each request? Update: I found this question which correlates my hunch that something was being re-used. Looks like I need to call Dispose on my injected data context. Not sure how I'm going to do this to all my repositories without copypasting a lot of code. Edit: These errors are popping up all over the place whenever I refresh my local machine too quickly. Doesn't look like it's happening on my remote deployment box, but I can't be sure. I changed all my repositories' StructureMap life cycles to HttpContextScoped() and the error persists. Code: public ActionResult Index() { // error happens here, which queries my page repository var page = _branchService.GetPage("welcome"); if (page != null) ViewData["Welcome"] = page.Body; ... } Repository: GetPage boils down to a filtered query mapping in my page repository. public IQueryable<Page> GetPages() { var pages = from p in _db.Pages let categories = GetPageCategories(p.PageId) let revisions = GetRevisions(p.PageId) select new Page { ID = p.PageId, UserID = p.UserId, Slug = p.Slug, Title = p.Title, Description = p.Description, Body = p.Text, Date = p.Date, IsPublished = p.IsPublished, Categories = new LazyList<Category>(categories), Revisions = new LazyList<PageRevision>(revisions) }; return pages; } where _db is an injected data context as an argument, stored in a private variable which I reuse for SELECT queries. • pointer to const member function typedef

    - by oldcig
    I know it's possible to separate to create a pointer to member function like this struct K { void func() {} }; typedef void FuncType(); typedef FuncType K::* MemFuncType; MemFuncType pF = &K::func; Is there similar way to construct a pointer to a const function? I've tried adding const in various places with no success. I've played around with gcc some and if you do template deduction on something like template <typename Sig, typename Klass> void deduce(Sig Klass::*); It will show Sig with as a function signature with const just tacked on the end. If to do this in code it will complain that you can't have qualifiers on a function type. Seems like it should be possible somehow because the deduction works.

  • Add static const data to a struct already defined

    - by Kyle
    Since static const data inside a class is really just namespace sugar for constants I would think that struct A { float a; struct B { static const int b = a; }; }; would be equivalent to struct A { float a; }; struct A::B { static const int b = a; }; or something similar. Is something like this possible in C++? It would be useful for me to be able to tag class definitions that I'm pulling in from third party libraries with information like this.

  • Qt: QAbstractItemModel and 'const'

    - by Eye of Hell
    Hello. I'm trying to use a QTreeView for a first time, with a QAbstractItemModel. And instantly it's a problem: QAbstractItemModel interface declares methods as 'const', assuming they will not change data. But i want a result of SQL query displayed, and returning data for a record with specified indeq REQUIRES to use QSqlQuery::seek() that is a non-const. Is it any 'official' guideline to use a QAbstractItemModel with data that MUST be changed in order to get number of items, data per item etc? Or i must hack C++ with const casts?

  • How to discard const in c++

    - by Vincenzo
    This is what I'm trying to do and I can't: #include <string> using namespace std; class A { bool has() const { return get().length(); } string& get() { return s; } private: string s; }; The error I'm getting is: passing ‘const A’ as ‘this’ argument of ‘std::string& A::get()’ discards qualifiers I understand what the problem is, but how can I fix it? I really need has() to be const. Thanks.

  • Instruments memory leak iphone

    - by dubbeat
    Hi, I posted this problem a few days ago but it was very muddled and my question wasnt very clear so I removed it. I've been digging around and the memory leak is still persiting. Hopefully this attempt will be clearer. First off I've run the static analyzer and it reports no memory leaks. I then ran Instruments and it pointed to a memory leak at this line of code. As far as I can see there is no memory leak. featured=[[UILabel alloc]initWithFrame:CGRectMake(130,15, 200, 15)]; //[featured setFont:[UIFont UIFontboldSystemFontOfSize:20]]; featured.font = [UIFont boldSystemFontOfSize:20]; featured.backgroundColor= [UIColor clearColor]; featured.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; featured.text= @"Featured Promo"; [self.view addSubview:featured]; [featured release]; featured=nil; If I comment out the above code Instruments reports another memory leak in another block of code where there is no discernible leak. UIButton *populartbutton = [[UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeRoundedRect]]; populartbutton.frame = CGRectMake(112, 145, 90, 22); // size and position of button [populartbutton setTitle:@"Popular" forState:UIControlStateNormal]; populartbutton.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; populartbutton.adjustsImageWhenHighlighted = YES; [populartbutton addTarget:self action:@selector(getpopular:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; [self.view addSubview:populartbutton]; Instruments also says Responsible Library = Core Graphics Responsible Frame = open_handle_to_dylib_path This Is the stack trace. 53 Promo start 52 Promo main /Users/..2/main.m:14 51 UIKit UIApplicationMain 50 UIKit -[UIApplication _run] 49 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunInMode 48 CoreFoundation CFRunLoopRunSpecific 47 GraphicsServices PurpleEventCallback 46 UIKit _UIApplicationHandleEvent 45 UIKit -[UIApplication sendEvent:] 44 UIKit -[UIApplication handleEvent:withNewEvent:] 43 UIKit -[UIApplication _reportAppLaunchFinished] 42 QuartzCore CA::Transaction::commit() 41 QuartzCore CA::Context::commit_transaction(CA::Transaction*) 40 QuartzCore CALayerLayoutIfNeeded 39 QuartzCore -[CALayer layoutSublayers] 38 UIKit -[UILayoutContainerView layoutSubviews] 37 UIKit -[UINavigationController _startDeferredTransitionIfNeeded] 36 UIKit -[UINavigationController _startTransition:fromViewController:toViewController:] 35 UIKit -[UINavigationController _layoutViewController:] 34 UIKit -[UINavigationController_computeAndApplyScrollContentInsetDeltaForViewController:] 33 UIKit -[UIViewController contentScrollView] 32 UIKit -[UIViewController view] 31 Promo -[FeaturedLevelViewController viewDidLoad] /Users/..s/FeaturedLevelViewController.m:67 // THIS IS MY CLASS WHERE THE CODE SAMPLES ABOVE ARE FROM 30 UIKit -[UILabel initWithFrame:] 29 UIKit -[UILabel _commonInit] 28 UIKit +[UILabel defaultFont] 27 UIKit +[UIFont systemFontOfSize:] 26 GraphicsServices GSFontCreateWithName 25 CoreGraphics CGFontCreateWithName 24 CoreGraphics CGFontCreateWithFontName 23 CoreGraphics CGFontFinderGetDefault 22 CoreGraphics CGFontGetVTable 21 libSystem.B.dylib pthread_once 20 CoreGraphics load_vtable 19 CoreGraphics load_library 18 CoreGraphics CGLibraryLoadFunction 17 CoreGraphics load_function 16 CoreGraphics open_handle_to_dylib_path 15 libSystem.B.dylib dlopen 14 dyld dlopen 13 dyld dyld::link(ImageLoader*, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 12 dyld ImageLoader::link(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&, bool, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 11 dyld ImageLoader::recursiveLoadLibraries(ImageLoader::LinkContext const&, bool, ImageLoader::RPathChain const&) 10 dyld dyld::libraryLocator(char const*, bool, char const*, ImageLoader::RPathChain const*) 9 dyld dyld::load(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&) 8 dyld dyld::loadPhase0(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 7 dyld dyld::loadPhase1(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 6 dyld dyld::loadPhase3(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 5 dyld dyld::loadPhase4(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 4 dyld dyld::loadPhase5(char const*, dyld::LoadContext const&, std::vector<char const*, std::allocator<char const*> >*) 3 dyld dyld::mkstringf(char const*, ...) 2 dyld strdup 1 dyld malloc 0 libSystem.B.dylib malloc I'm really not too sure how to use this information to fix the problem so any guidance would be appreciated. • Cast to delegate type fails in JScript.NET

    - by dnewcome
    I am trying to do async IO using BeginRead() in JScript.NET, but I can't get the callback function to work correctly. Here is the code: function readFileAsync() { var fs : FileStream = new FileStream( 'test.txt', FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read ); var result : IAsyncResult = fs.BeginRead( new byte[8], 0, 8, readFileCallback ), fs ); Thread.Sleep( Timeout.Infinite ); } var readFileCallback = function( result : IAsyncResult ) : void { print( 'ListenerCallback():' ); } The exception is a cast failure: Unhandled Exception: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.JScript.Closure' to type 'System.AsyncCallback'. at JScript 0.readFileAsync(Object this, VsaEngine vsa Engine) at JScript 0.Global Code() at JScript Main.Main(String[] ) I have tried doing an explicit cast both to AsyncCallback and to the base MulticastDelegate and Delegate types to no avail. Delegates are supposed to be created automatically, obviating the need for creating a new AsyncCallback explicitly, eg: BeginRead( ... new AsyncDelegate( readFileCallback), object ); And in fact if you try to create the delegate explicitly the compiler issues an error. I must be missing something here.

Will the memory pointed by retStr be occupied throughout the program or be released once the block A exits? -- Thanks

  • Difference of function argument as (const int &) and (int & a) in C++

    - by Narek
    I know that if you write void function_name(int& a), then function will not do local copy of your variable passed as argument. Also have met in literature that you should write void function_name(const int & a) in order to say compiler, that I dont want the variable passed as argument to be copied. So my question: what is the difference with this two cases (except that "const" enshures that the variable passes will not be changed by function!!!)???
