  • DNS - domain conflict?

    - by Stefanos.Ioannou
I was given two domains: domain.com & domain.info (they are on GoDaddy). And I was also given two servers, 107.105.38.99 - Rails app and 107.107.90.17 - Wordpress platform, on Digital Ocean. At first, I was instructed to associate domain.com with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Then I was instructed to de-associate this IP with domain.com and associated the 107.107.90.17 with the domain name domain.com. Then I was instructed to associated domain.info with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Right now, when I go to domain.com the WordPress platform (107.107.90.17) loads fine and that is what is expected. But when I go to domain.info for the Rails app (107.107.38.99) I get redirected to domain.com. This is not expected and this is really weird for me. When I ping domain.info I get this: PING domain.info (107.107.38.99): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 107.107.38.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=74.601 ms Which is the expected result showing the correct IP but I don't understand why I get redirected to domain.com...(which when I ping is:) domain 64 bytes from 107.107.90.17: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=75.057 ms The PTR Records on Digital Ocean are as follows: IP Address PTR Record 107.107.38.99 domain.info. 107.107.90.17 domain.com. and the DNS configurations on Digital Ocean are: domain.com A: @ 107.107.90.17 CNAME: * @ domain.info A: @ 107.107.38.99 CNAME: * @ I am not sure what the issue is, if you have any clue please let me know, I will be really grateful. If you need any other info let me know.

  • Multiple IP addresses on one NIC register twice in DNS server

    - by Brad B.
Hi, We've got a build server (Windows Server 2008 SP2, 64-bit) which has one NIC and two IP addresses registered to that NIC (192.168.1.30 and 192.168.1.31). The build server is registering two identical Host (A) records for itself in our DNS server: buildserver.example.com = 192.168.1.30 buildserver.example.com = 192.168.1.31 I know in the "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" window for the build server's NIC, under the "DNS" tab, there is a check box labeled "Register this connection's addresses in DNS". I only want ONE of the IP addresses (ending in .30) to be registered in DNS not both of them. Can that be done? My best guess is to disable the "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" and manually add the Host (A) record to our DNS server. Thanks for any help!

  • Resolving DNS queries for two disconnected, private, networks

    - by Mikeage
I'm trying to setup two PCs (one Windows, one Linux, but my understanding is that this problem is more DNS and less OS) as follows: Home network: 192.168.1.0/24 VPN (via OpenVPN server not within the home network): 192.168.2.0/24 . I would like a PC on both networks to be able to access three different types of site: Internet addresses Addresses on the home network Addresses on the vpn However, I'm not sure how/which DNS servers to use. If I prioritize my home DNS server, I can resolve (1) and (2), but not (3). If I prioritize my VPN DNS server, I can't resolve addresses of type (2). Of course, looking up addresses via nslookup and explicitly setting the correct server works, so I know my local DNS servers are OK. Is there any way I can set up my PCs to fallback on the second DNS server if there is no response? Alternatively, is there any way I can tell different queries to go to different servers [maybe by setting up different subdomains; foo.local.something vs. bar.vpn.something]? Thanks

  • DNS Server Spoofed Request Amplification DDoS - Prevention

    - by Shackrock
I've been conducting security scans, and a new one popped up for me: DNS Server Spoofed Request Amplification DDoS The remote DNS server answers to any request. It is possible to query the name servers (NS) of the root zone ('.') and get an answer which is bigger than the original request. By spoofing the source IP address, a remote attacker can leverage this 'amplification' to launch a denial of service attack against a third-party host using the remote DNS server. General Solution: Restrict access to your DNS server from public network or reconfigure it to reject such queries. I'm hosting my own DNS for my website. I'm not sure what the solution is here... I'm really looking for some concrete detailed steps to patch this, but haven't found any yet. Any ideas? CentOS5 with WHM and CPanel. Also see: http://securitytnt.com/dns-amplification-attack/

  • Change the order of DNS lookup when connected in the VPN

    - by qwerty2010
Using Windows 7 Pro here. I have my LAN network adapter with DNS server 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS). I also have OpenVPN client to connect to my company's network. If I type "nslookup" while disconnected from the VPN, I get 8.8.8.8 (from my LAN network adapter). If I type "nslookup" while connected in the VPN, I get the DNS IP from my company's network. That makes me think that when connected to the VPN all DNS's resolution are routed first to my company's DNS. How can I change this order, and make the DNS resolution be routed to 8.8.8.8 first, when I'm connected to the VPN? Thank you

  • How to setup a simple self-hosted dynamic DNS server

    - by Cerin
I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server? Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options? I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

  • Can't communicate with Primary DNS Server

    - by horsley
A computer, with Windows 7, can't access any website by domain suddenly. Whether this computer use a wired link or connect to the WLAN, The fault persists IP and DNS obtained automatically, and seems normal (ipconfig /all return the correct info) I can visit websites by using HTTP proxy The DNS server is available, other computer in my room works properly. I can ping myself, the gateway and any other IP, but domains I can use nslookup and obtain the correct IP info There are some error information in the event log about dns client events explaining the client can not verify the DNS server available Windows network diagnosis explain that Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS Server) I guess the dns client should be blame. I tried to do the following things but the fault persist. Reinstall the driver of network adapter Reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset) Reset Winsock (netsh winsock reset) Reset LSP I don't want to reinstall the whole os, what should I do?

  • Is there a way to batch create DNS slave zones on a new slave DNS server?

    - by Josh
I currently have a DNS server which is serving as a master DNS server for a number of our domains. I want to set up a brand new secondary DNS server. Is there any way I can automatically have BIND on the new server act as a secondary for all the domains on the primary server? In case it matters, I have Webmin on the primary server. I believe Webmin has an option to create a zone as a secondary on another server when creating a new master zone on one server, but I don;t know of any way to batch create secondary zones for a number of existing master zones. Maybe I'm missing something. Is there a way to "batch create" DNS slave zones on a brand new slave DNS server for all the DNS zones on an existing master?

  • how to configure my internal dns to resolve external resources

    - by Ralph Shillington
I have an internal DNS as part of my AD setup. I have an hosted DNS for public resources (which are typically at some data centre somewhere) Occasionally while on our internal network I need to get to a public resource --- for example www.ourcompany.com since there isn't a www record in our internal DNS I cant get the name resolved. How do I configure my DNS to forward names it doesn't recognise to the public DNS. Update: As per the comment yes I have a "split-horizon" dns (which seemed like a good idea at the time) This AD setup is less than 24 hours old, and can be redone if need be -- (although I would rather not)

  • reaching 99.9999% uptime

    - by user35204
I am currently developing a project which is mission-critical. The actual domain name is registered with 1 & 1 and I plan on purchasing DynDNS Custom DNS service (which has 5 different geographical locations for DNS) and then another secondary DNS service to make sure my DNS is as failover safe as possible. Does it matter that the registration is with 1 & 1 - are they a weak link in the chain? All I really use them for is to say that DynDNS is my primary DNS nameserver and then my secondary DNS is my other nameserver. I can transfer the registration to DynDNS - Im just not sure if it really matters or not. Thanks

  • Why does DNS work the way it does?

    - by sabof
This is a Canonical Question about DNS (Domain Name Service). If my understanding of the DNS system is correct, the .com registry holds a table that maps domains (www.example.com) to DNS servers. What is the advantage? Why not map directly to an IP address? If the only record that needs to change when I am configuring a DNS server to point to a different IP address, is located at the DNS server, why isn't the process instant? If the only reason for the delay are DNS caches, is it possible to bypass them, so I can see what is happening in real time?

  • Can we put random URL entries on DNS

    - by ring bearer
Using microsoft DNS All/most of our local hosts ( with in ) are in following domain *.company.org So a host name will look like mymachine001.company.org Is it possible to set up wild card DNS entries of the form ? *.subd.company.com Note: The URL ends with .com, all other hosts so far ever set up in the DNS were of the format *.company.org what i am trying to achieve is the following. A user with in internal network types a url http://someprefix.subd.company.com in browser and enters. Since there is a wild card entry in DNS, the user gets routed to host mapped to *.subd.company.com in the DNS Note : at the same time, company.com has a public DNS entry and that is mapped to a physical IP in some other network (data center)

  • using own mail server with external domain and dns. Now have internal dns. dkim test not working

    - by mojotaker
I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but have been able to make great head way. Now i am stuck I setup my own mail server, e.g mailbox.example.com. I had the domain dns point to my mail server in my office. i was able to set up everything working fine. such as dkim and spf records. Recently i decided to setup an internal dns server in the office so as to resolve some addresses for some development servers internally. Ok the problem now is my mail server is sitting on the internal dns server (the mail server is on the same box as the dns server) its still able to send and receive emails but not sure if dkim is working properly. when i try to do a dkim test "amavisd test keys" i get "invalid (public key: not available)" and i know that that means i have a dns issue. so what should i do? I am currently looking at my internal dns zonefile and i dont know what to do (i am using bind dns server on an ubuntu-server box). do i configure a dkim txt record on the local dns ? or is there a way to forward dkim "request" to the external dns ? or do i have this whole thing done wrong ? To be clear Basically my internal domain name is the same as my external domain name (i.e example.com) i have a mail server within my internal domain mailbox.example.com, that uses my external domain dns (external dns has been setup to point to my emailserver (which of course is now sitting behind my internal dns)) dkim (i dont think its working because it fails the dkim test") Need help in determing the proper setup What is the proper way to set this up ? thank you Update: Here is my local dns zone file ; ; BIND data file for local loopback interface ; $TTL 604800 @ IN SOA webserver.example.com. root.example.com. • AD-Integrated DNS failure: "Access was Denied"

    - by goldPseudo
I have a single Windows 2008 R2 server configured as a domain controller with Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server. The DNS Server was recently uninstalled and reinstalled in an attempt to fix a (possibly unrelated) problem; the event log was previously flooded with errors (#4000, "The DNS Server was unable to open Active Directory...") which reinstalling did not fix. However, while before it was at least showing and resolving names from the local network (slowly), now it's showing nothing at all. (The original error started with a #4015 error "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory," followed by a long string of #4000 and a few #4004. This may have been caused when a new DNS name was recently added, but I can't be sure of the timing.) Attempting to manage the DNS through Administrative Tools > DNS brings up an error: The server SERVERNAME could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied. Would you like to add it anyway? Selecting yes just puts a SERVERNAME item on the list, but with all the configuration options grayed out. I attempted editing my hosts file as per this post but to no avail. Running dcdiag, it does identify the home server properly, but fails right away testing connectivity with: Starting test: Connectivity The host blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. Got error while checking LDAP and RPC connectivity. Please check your firewall settings. ......................... SERVERNAME failed test Connectivity Adding the blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda address to hosts (pointing at 127.0.0.1), the connectivity test succeeded but it didn't seem to solve the fundamental problem (Access was denied) so I hashed it out again. Primary DNS server is properly pointing at 127.0.0.1 according to ipconfig /all. And the DNS server is forwarding requests to external addresses properly (if slowly), but the resolving of local network names is borked. The DNS database itself is small enough that I am (grudgingly) able to rebuild it if need be, but the DNS Server doesn't seem willing to let me work with (or around) it at all. (and yes before you ask there are no system backups available) Where do I go from here? As requested, my (slightly obfuscated) dcdiag output: Directory Server Diagnosis Performing initial setup: Trying to find home server... Home Server = bulgogi * Identified AD Forest. • DNS Does Not Register at Off-site Locations

    - by Russ Warren
First of all, let me give you the specifics of our setup: Windows Small Business Server 2008 Domain w/ all applicable updates on the DC The DC does DHCP for the main site The DC does DNS for all sites 3 sites including our headquarters where the DC is located All sites are connected through OpenVPN SSL tunnels terminated by an Untangle box at each site The 2 remote sites us the Untangle box as a DHCP server for their subnet, which assigns the DC as the primary DNS server Collection of Windows XP and Windows 7 workstations connected to the domain Here's the issue: All of the workstations at the main site register with the DNS server on the domain controller fine. As they grab an IP from the DHCP server, it updates the DNS server with the new host record. I have 2 systems (each at different remote sites) that fail to register with the DNS server. I've attempted the following troubleshooting steps: Confirmed the network adapter is using the DC as a DNS server Confirmed 2-way traffic is possible between DC and workstation Verified the "Register with DNS server" setting was checked in the adapter properties Attempted ipconfig /registerdns and received no errors For the time being, I have setup a DHCP reservation for these systems and manually created a host record. This seems to work fine, but I need a solution for any new systems that go out there.

  • DNS server not working?

    - by Behrooz A
I just set up a DNS Server on my windows 7, called SimpleDNS I added a zone for example sag.com and defined www.sag.com and sag.com to 192.168.1.2 (my Network IP Address) . the problem is when I try to ping sag.com the SimpleDNS logs says that it answered the request with 192.168.1.2 , but the ping doesn't resolve anything . SimpleDNS logs: > 14:00:43 Request from 192.168.1.2 for A-record for www.sag.com > 14:00:43 Sending reply to 192.168.1.2 about A-record for > www.sag.com: 14:00:43 -> Answer: A-record for www.sag.com = > 192.168.1.2 14:00:43 -> Authority: NS-record for www.sag.com = mehr-pc nslookup : > C:\Users\Mehr\Desktop>nslookup www.sag.com DNS request timed out. > timeout was 2 seconds. Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.1.1 > > DNS request timed out. > timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. > timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. > timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. > timeout was 2 seconds. > *** Request to UnKnown timed-out the DNS server IP is 192.168.1.2 , and Access point address : 192.168.1.1 what should I do?

  • Setting up DNS using VirtualMin/WebMin

    - by Nyxynyx
I am moving from a cPanel server to one where I've installed VirtualMin. The LAMP stack and the website files have been setup properly and I can access the website by its IP address. Problem: Now its time to point my domain mydomain.com to my new server. After reading many sites describing setting up bind and master zones, I am pretty confused as to what to do, especially coming from a cPanel server where its really simple to set this up. Attempt Tried to register my nameservers ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com at my domain registrar, but I am missing the IPs I need to point these nameservers to. Should I set ns1.mydomain.com to the IP addres of my web server, and not register ns2.mydomain.com? When specifying the DNS for mydomain.com, the first one I've set it to ns1.apadment.com. On the manager/admin page of my webhost provider, I am given the option to create a secondary slave DNS, which I assigned to the IP address of my server. Though I am not sure how the slave DNS will copy the info from my web server? I have assigned this secondary DNS ns.hostprovider.com as the second DNS for mydomain.com I tried creating a Virtual Server under Virtualmin, but it seems to mess up Apache's DocumentRoot for the site by creating and enabling a new vhost file that ends with .conf. I edited the .conf file to point DocumentRoot back to where its supposed to be /var/www/mydomain instead of /user/mydomain.com I believe the next step is to setup the zone. Virtualmin has already created a Master Zone with 8 different addresses (www.mydomain.com, ftp.mydomain.com...). Under Nameservers, there are already 2 records. One is the hostname (random name given by hostprovider, ns12345.ip123-123.net), the other is the secondary slave DNS provided by the host provider. Does having BIND running on my web server makes the server the master DNS? Thank you!

  • Cache updates when migrating DNS from one provider to another

    - by JohnCC
This may be a Windows DNS specific question or a general DNS best practice question - I'm not sure! We migrated our 3rd party DNS provision from provider A to provider B. I noticed that our internal recursive windows DNS servers still had NS records cached for our domains pointing to provider A's servers, even though I changed the nameservers with our registrar several days ago, and even though selecting the properties of the cached records showed a TTL of 1 day. After 24 hours when the NS records in this cache have expired, will the DNS server go back to the TLD server for an update on the authority, or will it go by preference to dns1.providera.com since that is what it has cached? In this case I arranged to leave Provider A's servers up for a week to allow changes to propagate, so dns1.providera.com is still active and would still provide NS and SOA records that said that dns1.providera.com. was in charge of this domain. Given this fact, would the Windows DNS server ever go back to the TLD and pick up the authority changes, or would it just assume all was well and renew timestamps on its cached NS records? I wonder what would be the best approach to ensuring that caches pick this up. Should I:- (1) Leave Provider A's servers in place and active and wait for caches to catch up ... basically what we're doing now which seems to have issues - perhaps specifically for Windows servers, or perhaps more widely. (2) Leave Provider A's servers in place but change the NS and/or SOA information they provide to tell caches that new servers are in charge. (3) Remove Provider A's servers after 2*TTL to force remaining caches to update. The issue with (2) is that on Provider A's system I can't seem to change the NS or SOA information to anything other than their servers. The issue with (3) is that I'm not sure how a DNS server would behave in this case. When it couldn't reach the cached name servers, would it flush its cache and try a full recursive lookup, or would it just return an error, forcing the user to clear the cache manually? Thanks in advance!

  • Does NetworkSolutions have a good DNS service?

    - by joxl
I'm recovering from a DNS disaster and I need some good advice on an alternate solution. My company owns a domain name through NetworkSolutions. Our website is hosted by another company who also maintains our DNS records. Our email is hosted by Google Apps, and the MX records are maintained through the afore-mentioned website/DNS host. Yesterday our website/DNS host had a serious hiccup in some software and completely overwrote all of our DNS records with invalid values; successfully pointing our domain and MX records at the wrong servers. Unfortunately it wasn't caught until it had time to significantly propagate. On top of that, it wasn't fixed until several hours later, combine that with a long TTL on the records; we have customers who are still bouncing emails. Anyhow, I am now completely terrified of this company's ability to do a good job, so I am considering switching to NetworkSolutions for our DNS service. I need the ability to configure A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records, preferably with a nice user interface (our current provider has a poor UI and doesn't support TXT records). Is NetworkSolutions a recommended DNS host? I am a little biased in their direction because the service will be free since we already pay them for our domain name. However I'm curious what others have experienced with their service.

  • DNS stops working occasionally

    - by Andrey
I have tried using Google DNS and the one provided with DHCP. At some point my PC (Windows 7) stops resolving domain names, but DNS server is perfectly pingable. What can be the reason? Thanks! Edit: It is really weird. It can stop and start working in few seconds. The problem is that DNA requests are timing out, and the problem is that the DNS server is pingable at the same time. I can't understand how this could be possible and what might be an issue. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc>nslookup google.com DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. - by realtebo
I've elfoip.net with bind $ whois elfoip.net | grep 'Name Server' Name Server: NS.ELFOIP.NET I need elfoip.net be able to serve third levels domain, like mickymouse.elfoip.net, etc... Are there any prerequisites to satisfy to allow dns of my isp to be able to forward dns resolution of *.elfoip.net to MY dns ? (Or to ask to him and then cache ?) TTL of zone is set a 5m I've not AllowQuey directive, is it necessary for other dns to cache from mine ? I've cheched the zone with bind utility named-checkzone but no error detected.
