  • backup of KVM VM's running on Ubuntu 12.4.1 precise edition from a remote machine

    I am creating a library API which will take the backup of all the VM's running on KVM hypervisor. My VM's can be of any type. I am taking this backup from a remote machine and need to put the backup at remote server. I have KVM, Libvirt installed on my system. Some of my VM's are LVM based and some are normal VM's running on KVM. I research and found out an excellent perl script for taking the backup http://pof.eslack.org/2010/12/23/best-solution-to-fully-backup-kvm-virtual-machines/ but since I am developing this library in C++ I cannot use it however it has given me a good understanding of how it will work. One thing I didnot able to sort out is if my VM's are not created using virt-manager or are created using any other tool them virsh system list command does not give them in the list of running VM's however they are running perfectly on my KVM server. Is there a way to list these VM's in my system list anyhow? secondly, when I am taking backup from the remote machine I am getting out of my ssh mode as soon as my libvirt command finishes and for every command I need to ssh again, Is there a way that I do not need to ssh each and every time? I have already used the rsa key for ssh but when once my command finishes my control moves to the remote machine again and try to find out my source VM location in remote machine's local drives which in turn fails it. here is the main problem I am facing. also for the LVM based VM I am able to take the live backup but for non LVM based my machines are getting suspended and not been able to take the live backup. Since my library will work on the remote machine only I might not know the VM's configruation on the KVM server. so need to make it consistent for all the VM's. Please share any thing related to this issue so that I may be able to take the live backup of the non lvm vm's also. I'll update my working and any research findings time to time to all of you.   • In Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to grant a user account the "log on as a service" right and if so, how?

    The title says it all. I need to have the ability for a local user account to log on as a service on a computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. In Windows 7 Ultimate, this is accomplished by going to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy and adding the user to the "Log on as a service" policy. In Home Premium, there is no Local Security Policy in the Control Panel. Is there another way to add the use to that policy (i.e. registry setting) or is my only recourse to upgrade the computer to Windows 7 Professional? Thanks in Advance, Ryan

  • nginx 404 logs to all virtualhosting logs

    I am using nginx and i have two sites running: site1 = /1/access.log site2 = /2/access.log when a user get 404 images not found on site2 nginx writes to access.log of site1 & site2 reporting the not found error, i tried everything to get separated logs without luck, i want everything that happen on site1 logged on /1/access.log and everything that happens on site2 logged on /2/access.log any help ?

  • All browsers refusing to load a specific image on a webpage?

    Out of nowhere today, all 3 of my browsers (FF/Chrome/IE, OS = Win7 x64) are refusing to load the homepage of interfacelift.com correctly. It works fine on other PC's in the house (on the same network), so it is definitely related to this one PC. The browser won't load the main image on the page correctly (even though the source code looks good), however if I direct the browser to the exact location of that image, then it displays fine. So obviously I can get the HTML index (which locates the resource) and I can get to the resource. So why heck isn't it displaying properly on the index page? It's almost as if the HTML rendering engine has gone bad, on all 3 browsers at once. I've browsed to a bunch of other sites (including sites very heavy on JS, with HTML much more complex than the one in question here) and am seeing nothing funny. Only thing wonky I've done with my PC in the past several hours was replacing the system file Magnifier.exe with a copy of cmd.exe while playing around with some of the ideas mentioned in this guide. However, I've since then restored the files to their previous state, and I don't know how Magnifier would be related to this even if I hadn't restored it. Any ideas? I'm stumped! EDIT: Here is what the broken page looks like in Chrome. And here is the image loaded correctly by itself.

  • Is there a test to see if hardware virtualization (vmx / xvm) are presently enabled within a Linux session?

    I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I've still got to go enable the feature in BIOS. Any way to test from within Linux to see that this is no or not? Thanks.

  • Advantages of multiple SQL Server files with a single RAID array

    Originally posted on stack overflow, but re-worded. Imagine the scenario : For a database I have RAID arrays R: (MDF) T: (transaction log) and of course shared transparent usage of X: (tempDB). I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then adding multiple SQL Server NDF files sitting on R: within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements. Of course, adding another raid array S: and putting an NDF file on that would. However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller MDFs sitting on one RAID array that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on the MDF, so adding NDFs to the filegroup even if they sat on R: would distribute the locking operations and growth operations allowing more throughput? Or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

  • Block IP Address including ICMP using UFW

    I prefer ufw to iptables for configuring my software firewall. After reading about this vulnerability also on askubuntu, I decided to block the fixed IP of the control server: 212.7.208.65. I don't think I'm vulnerable to this particular worm (and understand the IP could easily change), but wanted to answer this particular comment about how you would configure a firewall to block it. I planned on using: # sudo ufw deny to 212.7.208.65 # sudo ufw deny from 212.7.208.65 However as a test that the rules were working, I tried pinging after I setup the rules and saw that my default ufw settings let ICMP through even from an IP address set to REJECT or DENY. # ping 212.7.208.65 PING 212.7.208.65 (212.7.208.65) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 212.7.208.65: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=79.6 ms ^C --- 212.7.208.65 ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 79.630/79.630/79.630/0.000 ms Now, I'm worried that my ICMP settings are too generous (conceivably this or a future worm could setup an ICMP tunnel to bypass my firewall rules).   • How do I set up DNS with nic.io to point to an AWS EC2 server?

    I purchased a domain one week ago via nic.io. I have elected to provide my own DNS [because they provided no other option]. I'm trying to point my .io domain at my EC2 server instance. I've allocated an elastic IP and associated it with the instance. I can SSH into the instance and access point 80 via the IP address just fine. The IP is 54.235.201.241. nic.io support said the following: "You have selected to provide your own DNS and therefore if there is an issue with the set-up of the name servers you will need to contact your DNS provider." So, I created a Hosted Zone via Route 53 in AWS. This created NS and SOA records. I then set the Primary and Secondary servers at nic.io's domain admin page to the SOA record domains. Additionally, I set the optional servers to the NS domains. I did this two days ago, and I can't access the server via the domain. I ran a DNS check here...still not sure what I need to do: http://mydnscheck.com/?domain=chadjohnson.io&ns1=&ns2=&ns3=&ns4=&ns5=&ns6=. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Is it possible to install Canon EOS T3 Camera Drivers on Windows 7 Embedded

    I have a computer running Windows 7 Embedded. It's an embedded system that will be used in a industrial setting. It needs to be connected to a Canon EOS camera and download pictures from the camera. Other versions of windows come with the Canon drivers so Canon does not provide them as a download on their website. In the past, I had a similar issue with the "N" version of Microsoft Windows Starter and had to download the "Microsoft Media Feature Pack" which then installed the drivers. I attempted to install that on this device, but understandably it complains that its not applicable for this version of windows. So, is there there a feature pack or some other sort of download available that will install the camera drivers? Alternatively, is there some place to get the drivers and manually install them.   • Can't seem to get python to work

    I'm just starting out in Python. The Python interpreter works from the command line (I have 2.4.3), but I can't seem to get Apache to execute Python scripts. All I end up with is a blank screen and nothing in the Apache error logs. I enabled Python via the Plesk control panel. Like I said, I'm ending up with a blank page. No errors that I know of, unless I'm checking the wrong error log (I'm checking the Apache error log). I'm on a MediaTemple (dv) running CentOS.

We are thinking there may be some memory optimization opportunities with some of these session state variables potentially consuming large amounts of RAM. Is there a way to accomplish this through IIS or Windows rather than instrumenting all of the individual Web apps with code to monitor the session state variables?

  • Moving VMWare Fusion image to Boot Camp

    I have Windows 7 64-bit running in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, but am disappointed with the performance, and so I want to try Boot Camp. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my applications; I just want to somehow copy my VMWare Fusion "disk image" to a Boot Camp partition. My initial thoughts are that I should be able to run a Windows backup program in VMWare Fusion to back up the entire virtual disk, then set up Boot Camp and restore from that backup. However, Googling finds a few posts by people who have tried that and have encountered problems. So, is there a "known good" procedure for doing this?

  • VPN/AFP server for centralized TimeMachine backups

    I am a sysadmin for a small group of about 7 people who prefer Apple machines for their work. These machines are currently either a) not backed up at all, or b) backed up using Retrospect(Which I'm not very fond of). I don't really have the budget for anything fancy, and I'd like to keep it as user friendly as possible. Ideally I am thinking of a VPN server they can connect to(to keep the traffic secure, and because they work from home frequently) along with an AFP server for use with TimeMachine. The goal would be to get better backup coverage, along with user-initiated restores and overall ease of use. Does this seem like a reasonable idea? Has anyone done this before? Are there any obvious problems I've overlooked?

    Having read through the docs and RabbitMQ in Action, creating a RabbitMQ cluster seems straightforward enough, but upgrading or patching an existing RabbitMQ cluster seems to require the whole cluster to be restarted. Is there a way to combine clustering, shovel, federation, and load balancing to make a rolling upgrade possible without losing queues or messages, or have I missed something slightly more obvious?

  • Search for partial IP address using Windows Search?

    I have a folder, c:\projects\, added to Windows Index. I know the indexing is working because I search for stuff in this folder all the time and the results come up very fast, and I've never noticed any accuracy problem until now. (I have had to tweak Indexing options to expand which file types have their contents indexed rather than just the file name, etc, but after that Search has worked pretty well for me). I've encountered a problem while trying to search for references to a particular IP address subnet. I'm trying to find all references to IP's with the pattern "192.168.220.xxx" (AKA, the 192.168.220.0/24, AKA 192.168.220.0/255.255.255.0 IP/netmask). Within Windows Explorer: c:\projects**.* is indexed c:\projects\work\project1\network_list.txt contains several "192.168.220.xxx" IP's Indexing status says all items are indexed (193,000 items). When I try to search for partial IP match, there are no search results. Tried searching for: 192.168.220, 192.168, 192.168.220., 192.168.220., 192.168.220.?, 192.168.220.??, 192.168.220.???, 192.168., 192.168.. Also tried variants of all the above surrounded with double quotes. All the searches returned 0 results. Within MS Outlook 2007: My mailbox, and all my offline .pst's are indexed. I search in Outlook pretty frequently, so I'm pretty sure indexed searches work across inbox and all .pst's. Indexing status in Outlook says all items are indexed. I also have references to these IP's in email, and I'd like to find all of them. Basically same deal as above, can't search for "192.168.220.xxx" IP's. Any way to fix this?
