   By Karen Shamban The Young Prisms began their musical journey in San Francisco, and it's here they return to bring their unique sound to the Oracle OpenWorld Music Festival.  We asked them to tell us their thoughts on music, performing, and what they like in an audience.  Here's what they had to say: Q. What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?A. There are a lot of things to love about playing in front of people. The best part is definitely the nights when the energy the audience brings shows through. Although it always differs from city to city and person to person, when you play to a full house and people are really getting into it, it's like no other feeling.Q. How do you use technology in creating and delivering your music?A. Well, we actually use a lot more electronic components than people realize. Pretty much every string instrument played either live or on recording has been filtered through numerous electronic effects. Matt uses somewhere around 12 or 14 every time we play live. Giovanni has six. Most of our writing and demoing is done with drum sequencers and samplers too, so it's safe to say we use technology to our advantage in the writing process. Live is a bit different, since we keep it to the basics with guitars and acoustic drums. We also tend to use projections when we play live, so technology helps us do that fairly easily as well.Q. Do you prefer smaller, intimate venues or larger, louder ones?  Why?A. Couldn’t say we have a real preference in venue size. I mean, its always great to get to play through a massive killer sound system, but small venues when packed full are equally as special if not more so, because of the intimacy of it. Some of my favorite shows I've seen as an audience member/ fan have been at the smaller venues in San Francisco.Q. What about your fans surprises you?A. Sometimes the older guys are a surprise. We've played shows where there are more older guys in their 40s and 50s, who come and stare and take notes at our effects pedals. Then there are kids our age or in their 20s. Sometimes it's surprising to think that the older guys relate to what we're doing more than our peers and friends in our age group.Q. What about your live act surprises your fans?A. I think people are often surprised by how shy we can be. It feels like people expect us to be really rowdy and throw things and make really loud noises and get really aggressive on stage because some of the sounds we use can have an abrasive element to them. People expect Matt to have some kind of Kurt Cobain attitude, which he doesn’t at all. So it seems it surprises people to see musicians playing loud and noisy songs in their early and mid 20s being fairly tame and calm on stage.Q. There are going to be a lot of technical people (you could call them geeks) in the Oracle crowd -- what are they going to love about your performance?A. Hopefully most of them are pedal nerds like we are and like the previously mentioned “older dude crowd.” Besides that I hope they’d be into the projections and group of songs we're going to play for them.Q. What's new and different in the music you're making today, versus a year or two ago?A. I'd say there is more focus on the songwriting now and less of the noise today than last year. I think it's pretty evident on the new record compared to the last two. On the first two records we made as YP, we had another guitar player and songwriter who no longer plays with us. So the process in which we develop songs is different as well.Q. Have you been on tour recently? If so, what do you like about touring, and what do you dislike?A. Touring is amazing. Some people might tell you different if they've been doing it for what they'd call too long, but for us it's really a great chance to play for people who care about the music we're making and also to see and explore the world. Getting to visit so many different cities and explore so many different cultures is amazing. Of course we love getting into cultural foods too. Stefanie is a fashion geek so getting to go to New York as often as we do as well as getting to play in London and Paris is always especially fun for her.Q. Ever think about playing another kind of music? If so, what, and why?A. Never really thought about wanting to do anything drastically different. I think the style of music we play has a lot to do with the stuff we have been listening to both growing up and now. It wasn’t really a conscious decision to make sure it was a certain sound, so I'm not sure we've ever thought about doing a way different genre or whatever like electronic music or country. Although there have been times we've had conversations where we discuss possibly doing quiet sets or using the string synth sounds.Q. What are the top three things people should know about your music?A1. We like noise.A2. We use ambience and atmosphere as much as as we can.A3. • Learning to optimize with Assembly

  I am a second year student of Computer Games Technology. I recently finished my first prototype of my "kind" of own pathfinder (that doesn't use A* instead a geometrical approach/pattern recognition, the pathfinder just needs the knowledge about the terrain that is in his view to make decisions, because I wanted an AI that could actually explore, if the terrain is already known, then it will walk the shortest way easily, because the pathfinder has a memory of nodes). Anyway my question is more general: How do I start optimizing algorithms/loops/for_each/etc. using Assembly, although general tips are welcome. I am specifically looking for good books, because it is really hard to find good books on this topic. There are some small articles out there like this one, but still isn't enough knowledge to optimize an algorithm/game... I hope there is a modern good book out there, that I just couldn't find...

• Ubuntu One Windows application only accessing gpg files

  I'm on a windows 7 (64) machine right now, I have the Ubuntu One windows application. I'm synced to my online account, the folder I am accessing is... deja-dup\My-desktop When I click 'Sync Locally' checkbox and explore my folder I am only able to see three files of the form duplicity-full.#######.manifest.gpg duplicity-full.#######.vol1.difftar.gpg duplicity-full-signatures.#######.sigtar.gpg How do I access the content of these file? I put them on a linux server and decrypted them/ extracted them, however something is wrong. Note: I cannot use apt-get on the linux server I'm using. Is there a way to access these files using the Ubuntu one software for windows? Many Thanks, Boomerkuwanger

  There’s a significant number of useful projects at Codeplex who were meeting with some of our needs. As such, here are two that already have been useful to me: Droid Explorer As the name implies, allows us to explore an Android device and has features such as: Copy local files to device Reboot device Reboot device in to recovery mode Open files for viewing / execution locally with the default file type executable Package Manager (Install & Uninstall) Take a Screen Shot (landscape or portrait) etc Virtual Router – Wifi Hot Spot (Windows 7 / 2008 R2) Allows you to create an Access Point, sharing your local Internet connection, with other wireless devices. Its no doubt an application to be always installed, by the simple way to create a resource like this one.

• Converting ANTLR AST to Java bytecode using ASM

  I am currently trying to write my own compiler, targeting the JVM. I have completed the parsing step using Java classes generated by ANTLR, and have an AST of the source code to work from (An ANTLR "CommonTree", specifically). I am using ASM to simplify the generating of the bytecode. Could anyone give a broad overview of how to convert this AST to bytecode? My current strategy is to explore down the tree, generating different code depending on the current node (using "Tree.getType()"). The problem is that I can only recognise tokens from my lexer this way, rather than more complex patterns from the parser. Is there something I am missing, or am I simply approaching this wrong? Thanks in advance :)

  JAX-RS 2.0 Early Draft Third Edition is now available. This updated draft include new samples explaining the features and clarifications in content-negotiation, discovery of providers, client-side API, filters and entity interceptors and several other sections. Provide feedback to users@jax-rs-spec. Jersey 2.0, the Reference Implementation of JAX-RS 2.0, released their fourth milestone a few days ago as well. Several features have already been implemented there. Note, this is an early development preview and several parts of the API and implementation are still evolving. Feel like trying it out? Simply go to Maven Central (of course none of this is production quality at this point). The latest JAX-RS Javadocs and Jersey 2.0 API docs are good starting points to explore. • Reverse proxying only a specific URL

  I have a web server at www.ourcompany.com running Apache2. Using the proxy modules, I am able to (for example) get 172.16.0.5, an internal IP device, to be accessed on www.ourcompany.com/device. The trouble is that anyone can play with or explore the device using strings sent to www.ourcompany.com/device/change/settings/here.html. I'd like the reverse proxy to only work for a specific URL; www.ourcompany.com/device/you/must/use/this while anything else will be rejected if requested. Is there a setting that can be used to do this, or is it a simple rewrite condition placed in the virtualhost for the site under sites-enabled? What is the simplest, most maintainable way to sanitize requests to the internal device through the reverse proxy? Running Apache2 on Ubuntu.

• Is a Single Texture Cube Map Possible?

  I'm currently developing a test project to explore OpenGL 3 texturing abilities. I have a simple cube, made of 8 vertices and 36 indices. I want each of the cubes faces to have a different texture, so I devised this texture: I made it obvious which sections I want visible (I hope...). In Direct3D, I once made a skybox, and I used a cubemap. However, I had to split it into 6 different textures. This is annoying and hard to manage, it would be nice to have just one texture. Is this even possible? I read somewhere that I could do this by duplicating vertices, is that a good idea? Someone else said I could do it in the shader, but that also baffles me...
