• Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

  I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

  First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

  hi, i'd like to hook an external monitor to my notebook as i need a higher resolution (1680x1050). my notebook supports that resolution (via analog vga out) but the quality is pretty awful - there are blurry horizontal shadows everywhere and tweaking didn't help - seems like the vga out's quality isn't good enough. so i was wondering - does it make sense looking for an external video card? can i also connect a dvi monitor via usb-video-card with optimal quality? my notebook also has pcmcia. any recommendations which i should buy? thx

What is the best solution to keep two external harddrive in sync? i'll probably use one as regular and maybe use the other only to copy data. The easiest way to keep it in sync is to clear one drive and copy the other but 1T of data will take a long time. Whats a good existing app that will keep them in sync? freeware preferred.

  Yeah, truly the whole question in the header. Is there a way to use Windows 7 offline sync (which we know from network mapped drives) with a external usb hd? When not, are there similar built in tools or good third party tools? My scenario: I want to buy a ultrabook with SSD which is mostly limited in space. So I'm going to put all files to a external HD and only store current projects on the local SSD. Let's say I have to change project. It would be easy just change sync folders and have the second project synced to my hd too. With network mapped drives it's such easy. Paths do not differ if the drive is offline so in most situations you don't take notice if the folder is offline. And you only have to activate offline file for the folders you courrently need for work. So is there a similar solution for usb hard drives?

• Windows 7 - cannot access my own external disk

  I use Windows 7 Home Premium and external USB disk with NTFS partition. I cannot write-access the my own files on it, even as a member of Admnistrators group! Is there any way how to go around this permission checking, without actually writing some permission information to every folder on it? I have 3 external disks (up to 1TB), and I have thousands hundreds of files on each!!! Doing some permission change, that will actually go recursivelly through all folders on all my disks is plain brain damage!! 1) Is there any way how to change it somehow globally? (like mount options...) .. Or how to go around this annoying permission checking? It was working in Win XP normally! 2) if not, and I must do the recursive operation on all folders, how to do it PERMANENTLY, so that I don't need to do it again on another Windows 7 computer!

• External monitor turning black intermittently

  I have installed an external monitor (Dell ST2220L, 21.5 inch) on my laptop (Sony Vaio). I am using a DVI-D cable for connection. Since the laptop does not have a DVI-D port, I have connected a DVI-D to HDMI connector on the laptop end and inserted the cable in HDMI port of the laptop.. I have switched off the laptop display and adjusted the screen resolution on the Dell external monitor to 1920 x 1080 and adjusted colors for the Windows 7 and brightness and contrast from the monitor. The problem is the monitor turns of blank intermittently for 1-2 seconds and turns on again at random interval. What could be the reason for this and how to get rid of this problem?

• USB external drive is not recognized by any OS, how to troubleshoot in Ubuntu?

  First of all I would like to inform you that I saw a question similar to mine but the error was different, so here's my problem... I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized.   Hey people, What's the best method to take an exact copy of my external hard disk? A guru suggested rsync, but I was wondering if there's an easier alternative. I do remember reading somewhere that Acronis also does this. Was looking for your advice on the best option. I'm running Windows. • Changing default datadirectory to one on a External NAS or add external share

  So I have been searching the web for days, looking for a solution to my problem. Now my only hope are you guys. I have installed Owncloud successfully on my Windows Server 2008R2. It all runs smoothly and I can connect without problems. So first checks are OK. Now I wanted to change the default data directory from my server to a shared folder on my NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3). Tried following: changing the directory in config.php I changed the path in the config file from : "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder\data" to "\NASIP\cloud". by doing this the owncloud server only shows: Code: Select all Daten-Verzeichnis (\192.168.2.4\Cloud\data) ist ungültig Bitte stelle sicher, dass das Daten-Verzeichnis eine Datei namens ".ocdata" im Wurzelverzeichnis enthält. I also tried coping the files that were created in the local data storage, to the share on the NAS. No Luck. Now I tried it by mapping a network drive and using that in the config.php But still no luck. I get the same message with the missing .ocdata file. Now I tried the "External Storage APP" that comes with owncloud I thought that at least I could add the share as an external storage. But this also does not work. tried UNC, Mapped Drive Name (Z:) but nothing helped. So now I'm turning to you.. Does anyone have expirience with this kind of setup? Or can you even tell me how to make it work? (default or external storgae, I don't care anymore ) Using NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3), Owncloud 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7 I got an answer on an other forum: The second option is how it should be done: 1. Put OC in maintenance mode 2. Mount (mapping in the windows world) your NAS directly to your OS 3. Copy the local data directory to the NAS mount 4. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount 5. Update OC config.php with the new data path 6. Disable OC maintenance mode And this seems like the right way.. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount I guess this is where I am not sure. What user is it exactly on my Server that is making the requests to the NAS? If the user is for example "IUSR" I can just create an account on my synology NAS and give him full access to my share? (But what is IUSRs password?) I have full root ssh access to my NAS, so if you can tell me what chmod or chown I need to use on my cloud folder...

  i have a 3.5" western digital my book 500gb external hdd....i gave it to a friend of mine and he broke the usb port in it...i went to a nearby comp repair shop and had him solder the thing...it didnt detect when i plugged it in my dell inspiron laptop........i recently saw about the 3.5" sata to usb enclosure, so i went to check it....strangely when its placed in the enclosure, its not detecting in windows...also when it was put as secondary(im guessing slave) to the shop fellow's desktop it shows up in the bios and starting, but then again doesnt show in windows 7, and the guy told me i need to data recovery to get teh data back p.s.the wd hdd doesnt have os, just data, soo my question is: can i slave the drive to my dell laptop and try to recover the data....if so how? please i would really appreciate it...thanks in advance

  Firstly, I know very little about servers and secondly the 1Tb HDD I have has network capabilities, but no software is installed on it, so when connected to the computer it is seen as a network connection, but not as a drive. Any advice on how to get started would be great. Up until now, I have been using it as a USB drive which worked well, but when this is sorted, I would like it to be connected directly to our BT HomeHub accessible through the WiFi for all the family to use as a film and back up repository. I would then be able to set up individual accounts for each family member to use and may be, if possible, make it accessible from outside locations. First of all my drives are : HDD 640 Gb SSD Samsung 830 series 128 Gb Whats the best partitiong for theese drives ? 128 Gb is sure enormous amount of space only for / (root) . Is it a good choice if i make 2 partitions on ssd (20 Gb / and 100 /home) and leave hdd as backub drive for my data (files,movies,music etc) ? In this case what mount point must have hdd ? • Slow writing HDD speed, Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Thinkpad T520i

  It seems that (but I'm not completely sure), that when I'm copying files from gigabit network to HDD, I can't use full potential of the network which in my case is about 60 MB/s, because HDD writing is so slow like lower than 10 MB/s, and also it's slowing down the whole system which becomes pretty much unresponsive, almost impossible to work with. Copying files to samba share residing at Ubuntu machine, connected to share from Windows 7, I'm completely sure my network equipment is OK, and there's no CPU intensive process on Ubuntu except smbd getting about 10-20% from time to time which I think is OK. Something here is burried deep I think, maybe even in kernel. Already tried to switch from AHCI to compatibility mode, and turning acpi on and off - nothing helped. So it's like HDD buffer is full and emptying slowly while machine is sluggish, load is about 3 to 4. Somebody experienced the similar problems? Some help on troubleshooting process and identifying the cause would be helpful too :) Thanks!

  Long story short, I was using my laptop's internal HDD as an external one on my desktop, and I forgot to remove it when I was upgrading to 13.10. Now GRUB on my desktop has added entries for the Windows and Ubuntu partitions that exist on the laptop's HDD, but I don't want them to be there. Can I safely remove them ? • NAT cause huge External (actually internal) bandwidth usage

  We have 4 servers running in a data center, with internal IP: 192.168.3.* assigned. A hardware (FORTIGATE) firewall configured NAT, and it will lead the traffic as: external IP: 111.222.333.10 -> 192.168.3.10 www.server1.com 111.222.333.11 -> 192.168.3.11 www.server2.com 111.222.333.12 -> 192.168.3.12 www.server3.com In DNS, we have www.server1.com A 111.222.333.10 Now if I send a lot of data to www.server1.com from www.server2.com, the data will be send through 111.222.333.10 (external IP) and this cause our bandwidth usage huge (expensive!). The work around I have is to add a local host mapping to server2: 192.168.3.10 www.server1.com. That way when send files from server2 to www.server1.com, it will be internal. However, we are having more and more servers, it would be hard to manually add mapping to every server. Just wondering do we have another solution for this? Can we do something in the FORTIGATE firewall? ps. The DNS server being used is public, such as opendns, Google dns etc.

• External SATA drive does not work without the optional USB cable *also* connected

  I have Vantec NST-260SU external eSATA/USB drive enclosure (which came with an optional separate power supply) connected to a relatively new Windows 7 computer. The drive should work as a SATA drive with either the separate power supply or using a USB cable solely for power. I would prefer to use the external power supply because I have used all my rear USB ports. Now, if I connect both the eSATA and USB cable, then: The drive shows in the BIOS list of AHCI drives (and not in the list of attached USB devices). Everything I can see about it in Computer Management seems to show it as a SATA driver (for example, it shows as "Location 0 (Channel 5, Target 0, Lun 0)" like my other SATA drives (and not "on USB Mass Storage Device" like my USB flash-drives). It seems very fast, very much faster than my USB flash drives. However, if I disconnect the USB cable and attach the power adapter instead, the drive does not show in the BIOS list and cannot be seen by Windows. The power LED on the enclosure is lit, and the drive enclosure becomes warm after running for a bit, so I am sure it is receiving power. Does anyone know if this device requires both the USB and eSATA cable, and if so, why? Or is there possibly something I need to do to reset the enclosure to not need the USB - the install instructions are pretty clear that you must connect the SATA cable before connecting the USB cable in order for the drive to function as SATA, which I am sure I did. PS: I have reviewed the small manual which came with it, which has not been of help.

• Safely remove external USB drive fails due to $extend

  When connecting an external USB 3.0 hard drive to my USB 3.0 ports I can never safely remove it. Somehow windows always keeps the journal files open: "Always" as in this time I only connected the drive, copied a 10GB VM and wanted to disconnect it afterwards (like 15 minutes after copying, so all copying was done). As you can see there is no other program keeping a handle on the disk besides System. I tried restarting explorer.exe as well as RemoveDrive.exe from Uwe Sieber. No luck, the locks on the hard drive always remain. My only solution is just unplugging it (whereas I'm afraid of damaging the data?) or restarting the computer (always helps, doesn't it?). Might it have something to do with me only having a SSD hard drive and the external disk is a regular drive? Might it have something to do with the USB 3.0 drivers (NEC Electronics USB Hub)? I never have this problem when using the regular USB 2.0 ports. Any ideas on how to properly unmount the disk?

• configure a Macbook Pro to use external monitor at boot (Debian Linux)

  In the spirit of reuse, I've installed Debian (version 6.0.5 "squeeze") on my wife’s old Macbook Pro (circa 2009 or so), to repurpose it for various tasks. The catch is the display is flaky. It will last a random amount of time, between 2 minutes and 2 hours, before freezing and graying out. This is a known issue with that generation of MBP. Fortunately it’s no problem for me, as I plan to use it with an external monitor anyway. Which brings us to the problem: How do I configure this thing to output to the external display by default, and hopefully disable the built-in LCD? The ideal solution would be to modify a setting in the EFI (BIOS), but I’m not holding out much hope for that. Next best thing would be a kernel option I can pass to the NVIDIA driver. What won’t work is a solution that doesn’t give me a display until X starts. I need to have console access, especially given that the built-in LCD is dying, and any day now might give out completely. • Proper way to set permissions on an external disk's ext3 partition

  I have a new external disk and just made an ext3 partition on it. I'm wondering what's the best way to set permissions on it (so that it's rw for certain users). I guess I could chmod ... /dev/sdb1 but I was thinking of a more dynamic way (kind of like uid= and gid= options for vfat and such).
