• Is Fedora a bad choice for a server?

  I'm taking over IT responsibilities at a small company. Most of the servers appear to be running various releases of Fedora (file servers, backup servers, oracle servers, etc). I don't have much experience with Fedora, but I was under the impression its geared for end user desktops/workstations/laptops. Is Fedora a bad choice for servers?

• Windows 7 SP1 not being offered on Windows Update

  i have no option to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on my computer. Why is the option to install Windows 7 SP1 missing from Windows Update? i'm less interested in why the option is missing, and more interested in how to diagnose why the option to install Windows 7 SP1 is being hidden. Following the suggestions in KB2498452 - You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates: Confirm that Windows 7 SP1 is not already installed and that you are not running a prerelease version of Windows 7 SP1 i am not already running SP1, or a pre-release SP1: Check for pending updates Update 976902 may have to be installed on your computer before Windows 7 SP1 will be offered in Windows Update. i already have 976902 installed: Verify that an incompatible version of SafeCentral is not installed on your computer Windows SP1 may not appear in Windows Update if certain versions of SafeCentral are installed on your computer. SafeCentral is a security program that is manufactured by SafeCentral, Inc. i do not have SafeCentral installed (i've never heard of such a thing): Check whether you have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd32.sys or Igdkmd64.sys and whether you upgraded the driver i do not have an Intel GMA: Make sure that you did not use vLite to customize your Windows 7 installation i did not use vLite to customize my Windows 7 installation. The KB article says that SP1 will not be offered if your machine doesn't meet some secret special criteria. How can i discover what that secret criteria is? i presume it is logged somewhere. Nor am i particularly interested in a direct download link. i want to learn here. i want to be able to diagnose (i.e. in the future) why an update is not being offered. i'm a superuser here. Rather than others coming up with a checklist of things to try, i want to be able to come up with the checklist.

• SCCM 2012 - Windows 8 WSUS

  We're using SCCM 2012 to deploy Windows Updates on our domain, and our Windows 8 clients have started failing with error 80240438 when they try to update. Windows 7 clients update fine, but Windows 8 clients refuse to do anything. I've done a search online and it seems to only reference Windows InTune. Has anyone seen any similar behavior on Windows 8 machines? If we don't get that error, we're getting 80244021 which seems to indicate that the server can't be found.... but they can resolve it just fine and our exceptions are defined on the proxy too. • Move sendmail from Fedora 1 to a different server ( fedora 12)

  We have a sendmail server that also works as DHCP, DNS, and a gateway to our ISP. It has three network interfaces, one for our ISP ( static IP) and the other two is for LANS on different subnet. The hardware is quite old and we've been experiencing downtime due to hardware failures, so we have decided to upgrade the hardware and while at it upgrade the linux OS to Fedora 12. Were trying to do this with minimal downtime. We are planning to take these steps. Install New OS (Fedora 12) on the new server with 3 network interfaces. Install DHCP, BIND, Sendmail, SpamAssassin, MailScanner, Dovecot, Squirrelmail on the new server. Transfer settings from the old server to the new server. ( This is the hardest part that we know). For DHCP and DNS, we can just copy the dhcp leases and conf file and everything should work right? How do we go about moving the users/email accounts from the old server to the new one? • Sendmail - Relaying denied (state 14)

  I have my sendmail.cf file configured to send local mail and to receive external mail to local users. So sending mail from the server to the external world works fine, but the other way around does not... I get an error e-mail saying: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: [email protected] Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.7.1 root@75.xxx.xxx.xxx... Relaying denied (state 14). Also I can't find logs in /var/log, all I see is this binary file in /var/log/mail/statistics Thanks!

  This question already has an answer here: Cant find my harddrives in ubuntu installation? 2 answers I've bought a N54L and fitted two 3GB drives. Keen to get set up with RAID1. BIOS: SATA controller mode set to "RAID" RAID Option ROM utility: both physical drives set up as one logical drive When I came to install Ubuntu (14.04.1), both drives appeared during the setup process. I was only expecting to see the logical drive, although I'm a complete novice with RAID. I've read that the HP Proliant Microservers don't have "proper" RAID support, and require some kind of driver to be installed. I've tried a few HP utilities from the following apt repo: deb http://downloads.linux.hp.com/SDR/repo/mcp wheezy/current non-free On installation, most say "server not supported" Would appreciate your advice.

• Unable to access intel fake RAID 1 array in Fedora 14 after reboot

  Hello everyone, 1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays: 2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126 2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125 I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. It was only after I recreated the partition via fdisk that it reappeared in /dev... until next reboot. So, my question is - How do I make the array automatically available after reboot? • Installing Linux kernel 2.6.25.14 on RHEL 5.4

  I have to install Linux kernel version 2.5.25.14 on a RHEL 5.4 server because of drive compatibility issues. I follow the RedHat "Building a Custom Kernel" instructions running the following: $ make mrproper $ make xconfig $ make clean $ make bzImage $ make modules $ make modules_install $ make install But I get a bunch of warnings like this: WARNING: No module ehci-hcd found for kernel 2.6.25.24, continuing anyway When I try to boot this kernel it is unable to mount the hard drive, and kernel panics on startup. As far as I can tell I'm using a standard configuration (I just accept the defaults and save a .config file). Is there something I'm missing? Thanks.

• ubuntu 12.10/linux mint 14 ssh-copy-id doesn't work and returns Ambiguous output redirect

  I recently got a new computer and I'm trying to use ssh-copy-id to put my keys on another server so I can login without password. but when I try ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@server and after inputting the correct password it returns Ambiguous output redirect. There are no other messages after that. I thought it was maybe just Ubuntu 12.10 so I installed Linux Mint 14 and sure enough exact same thing happens. I've tried removing authorized_keys from the remote server but that didn't change anything.

• Windows 7 just restarts, no BSOD, shows "Event ID 14 volsnap"

  My Windows 7 just restarts without giving me a BSOD. When it reboots, it will hang sometimes and you have to let it rest. Sometimes it will print a message saying that Hal.dll is missing or corrupt. When it does restart I can't run a backup or a clone drive – it comes up with constant errors. I tried to run chkdsk – it says everything's clean. What is really puzzling is SyncToy on a different drive hangs half way through and won't run either. Machine: OCZ SSD Agility 2 for C drive SATA HDD for programs, documents on D drive MSI AMD 880 chipset Event viewer says something about critical power failure I/O operations and "Event ID 14 volsnap" – but that is just telling me the computer powered off which I already know.

• Acad 14 SOLIDS disappeared, DWG file doesn't open correctly

  I made a drawing in Autocad 14 (Win XP) containing of mostly SOLID's. I saved and re-opened it multiple times without any problem. Before I last saved it I viewed my drawing using the SHADE functions. After re-opening all my SOLIDS have disappeared. I spent numerous hours searching for a solution, tried SATFIX.ARX , AUDIT, RECOVER without success (ACIS error - which should be gone after applying SATFIX), changed my computer locale from German (decimal = comma) to English (decimal = dot) but my screen remains empty (and yes I tried to recover from a .BAK, too) I also tried to export (the non-display drawing) into DXF and can confirm that all my objects are in there, but re-opening the DXF results in a huge ACIS error list again I am desperate - please can someone help - thanks! • Force Firefox 14 to free memory when opening/closing lots of popups

  I'm currently trying to run some tests on a web application using Selenium IDE with Firefox 14. The tests mainly consist in loading a page containing thousands of links and clicking on every of those links. Of course, each time a popup shows, I tell Selenium to close it and proceed with the remaining links. However, it seems that even if I close the popups, Firefox is not freeing memory. Usually, I end up with Firefox crashing after opening 1500 popups (around 2.5Gb of memory usage). Is there any way to force the browser to free memory? Maybe something I should set in about:config? Or is there a flaw with Selenium? Thanks.

• Fedora 19 no longer bootable

  I had fedora dual-booted with windows on my laptop for a while but with windows refresh grub was gone and my system directly booted windows. I booted fedora with my systems boot options and with this tutorial: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2 I reinstalled grub2 but then had my system booted into an empty grub prompt: grub So I found the drive containing vmlinuz and initramfs (completely sure about thair location and versions) and tried to manually boot it but after the boot command it said: no suitable video mode found booting in blind mode and nothing happened. Such a tragedy... I have already tried to use live disks rescue system. Funny but troubleshooting options don't apear on my laptop while they do on my desktop pc. I cant even go to boot prompt on my lenovo idepad z400 laptop. I also tried EasyBCD so maybe I could boot it with windows but it comes up with this error: missing AutoNeoGrub().mbr Now I have removed the grub prompt (don't know why) and its really hard for me to reinstall my dearly customized fedora. If anyone knows a way to help boot it again or reinstall it keeping my files and installations I really need it. Thanks PS:I have already tried Boot-repair Disk but it asks me to enable the repo containing grub-efi on my fedora to reinstall the grub2 and fix the boot for me (how could i?).

• Fedora Core 6 Migration

  I am at a loss as to what I should to for this server. I need it to run php5.3 and corresponding version of mysql. I received a client today through work that is using Fedora core 6 running 10 very small websites on some very hodge podge setup. My original idea was just upgrade to php5.3. I have yum (installed 3.0.8) reconfigured for the fedora archive. The latest version of php it allows is 5.1.8. I am still relatively new to server setups and am nervous about wiping their server to upgrade it. Since it is about 6-8 years old I'm not sure if it will even support the newest version of fedora. The server specs are: Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5.4 Operating system Linux 2.6.9-023stab048.4-smp CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5335 @ 2.00GHz (10gb disk space and 1gb of memory). I use fedora for my personal server so I was a little familiar with it. I haven't done anything too extravagant. Is there a way I can escape this nightmare with installing php5.3 or do I need to migrate these sites to a new server?

• Multiple Graphics Cards on Fedora 15 (Gnome 3)

  I have the (delightful) misfortune of having 3 graphics cards. They are XFX Radeon 5750s. Each drives 2 monitors via dvi. I am having a really hard time getting these running on fedora 15 (gnome 3). So my setup is 3 columns of 2 monitors (the upper monitor is mounted upside down in each column to reduce the bezel between monitors). When the (graphical) login screen comes up all 6 have the blue stripey background that must be the default, but then when I login, things get interesting. In the xorg.conf below, you will see only 2 of the screens in the serverlayout while the other 4 are commented out. Logging in with only 2 of the screens active works well (and it even remembers that the top one is upside down, and should be considered above the lower, i am not sure where it stores this info, but i set it using the graphical "Displays" settings) However, as soon as I uncomment a third screen, or more, it gives me an error message when I login. It's one of those friendly, less helpful messages (Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again). If i do not use an xorg.conf, then the "Displays" prefs pane shows only the two monitors on one of my graphics cards Thanks to anyone who can help me get going! • VMware Virtual Infrastructure Web Access not starting on Fedora 14

  I am running a Fedora 14 server with VMware Server 2. When I initially installed VMware Server, everything was working fine. This included accessing Web Access on port 8333 (https) and 8222 (http). I had to perform a server restart and afterwards, the Web Access is not starting when I run: /etc/init.d/vmware-mgmt start The VMware Server Host Agent starts [OK], but the Web Access has no [OK] or [Failed] next to it. I also checked ports 8333 and 8222 by running a netstat, but neither are showing up. In addition, I checked the proxy.log and client.log files in the following directory: /usr/lib/vmware/webAccess/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/logs/ The proxy.log doesn't have entries in it past 9-18-2012, which is the date the server restart occurred. The client.log is empty. I not sure what is causing this issue or what log files will be helpful in narrowing down the cause. I could re-install VMware Server, but I would like to narrow down the cause as it could occur again with the new re-installed environment.

  There are two configurations of the Dell Studio 14 (1458) which I'm looking at: Config 1: Core i7-720QM @ 1.6 GHz; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 1GB; 4gb DDR3 RAM @ 1066 MHz; 500 GB SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM; Price: $999 Config 2: Core i5-430M; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 512MB; 4GB DDR3 RAM @ 1066 MHz; 500 GV SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM; Price: $874 What I want to know is, would config 1 still be able to do decent gaming (maybe some Starcraft II), and is there a great performance difference between the i5 and i7 processors? Is the $130 extra worth it for the i7 and better graphics card? I do more than just basic computing. I plan on getting into web design (specifically using Photoshop and Dreamweaver), and I wish to do gaming. I know Conifg 1 is the better value, but I want to be sure that the $130 more is truly worth it. I dont have too much money and want to spend wisely as possible, yet I am a computer geek and plan on doing a lot more than the average user.

  I am using Fedora 17 and am trying to access a remote machine (running Fedora 15) using its hostname which isn't working. The machine is right next to me on the same switch as my machine (so they are both on the same network with the same subnet and everything). When I was running Windows (7 32-bit) on my machine I could access the other machine no problem but now that I am running Fedora 17 that's not the case. Is there an additional daemon or something that I need to be using in order for this to work?

  I was able to setup xrdp on my Fedora 13 machine and access it from my Windows 7 machine by follow the steps on the first post on this thread It was simple and easy. But when i try the same on my Fefora 20 machine, things are quite different. There is no error message but some new info like these: # chkconfig --levels 35 xrdp on Note: Forwarding request to 'systemctl enable xrdp.service'. # service xrdp start Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start xrdp.service and then I cannot remote it from my window machine. I also did the following based on the last post of above threa: # yum -y install tigervnc-server Any configuration I should do to make xrdp works for me? I was able to ping each other. EDIT: I can access the shared folder on my Windows machine from my Fedora 20. It seems the problem is on the Fedora side. how to know the service on linux is running? The "service --status-all" cannot give me useful information.

  Trying to install Fedora 15 via a live USB made with unetbootin. I get to the unetbootin boot menu, select Fedora-15-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is, I get to this screen, then it drops into a debug shell with the message sh: can't access tty: job control turned off. The last message is dmseg is dracut Warning: No root device "live:/dev/disk/by-label/Fedora-15-Beta-x86_64-Live-Desktop.is" found. Seems to be the same problem detailed here. Tried to try nk1eto's solution but there is no by-label directory in /dev/disk. There's by-id, by-path and by-uuid.

• How to resize the disk of a Fedora guest VM in VMWare ESXi

  How do I resize (specifically increase) the disk size of a Fedora guest VM running under VMWare ESXi 4.1? I have a Fedora 16 VM with an ext4 formatted disk, and I've increased its disk size using the vSphere client from 50GB to about 250GB. I rebooted the guest, and it correctly shows this size using fdisk -l /dev/sda. However, df -H still shows the old size. I've found a few KB articles explaining how to resize partitions for some flavors of Linux, but nothing for Fedora with ext4. That article seems to imply I have to create a completely new partition, and that I can't simply expand the existing partition. Using Gparted, it also prevents me from simply resizing the existing partition. Is this impossible to do under Linux?

• Virtualbox won't run Fedora 10 64 bit iso

  I am using VirtualBox on a Ubuntu 10.04 64bit host. I would like to install a Fedora 64bit guest. When I try to run the 64bit live cd, it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." after which I get a blue background with no menu options. I am familiar with Ubuntu but not Fedora. I have been able to install a Fedora 32 bit system just fine. Any suggestions? I am trying to run an rpm that won't run in Ubuntu even using alien. .

• Creating bootable Fedora USB with persistent storage

  I am attempting to burn the full Fedora 19 x86_64 DVD iso to a USB drive and have a separate partition on it for a kickstart file / other media that will be installed in the kickstart process. With the Ubuntu server 12 iso, you can simply dd the iso to the usb drive: dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdb Once the iso has been burnt, open gparted and create a ext2 parition in the allocated space. However, this does not seem to work with the Fedora ISO. When loading the USB drive in gparted I get a warning and an error: Warning: The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but Linux says it is 512 bytes. Error: The partition's data region doesn't occupy the entire partition. Ignoring both of these errors allows gparted to load the usb drive, however it shows a blank drive with no partition table. Has anyone come across this before? From what I have found, it may have something to do with the fact that Fedora use isohybrid.
