  • OOP: how much program logic should be encapsulated within related objects/classes as methods?

    I have a simple program which can have an admin user or just a normal user. The program also has two classes: for UserAccount and AdminAccount. The things an admin will need to do (use cases) include Add_Account, Remove_Account, and so on. My question is, should I try to encapsulate these use-cases into the objects? Only someone who is an Admin, logged in with an AdminAccount, should be able to add and remove other accounts. I could have a class-less Sub-procedure that adds new UserAccount objects to the system and is called when an admin presses the 'Add Account' button. Alternatively, I could place that procedure as a method inside the AdminAccount object, and have the button event execute some code like 'Admin.AddUser(name, password).' I'm more inclined to go with the first option, but I'm not sure how far this OO business is supposed to go.

    Hi, On page 57 of The Design and Evolution of C++, Dr. Stroustrup talks about a feature that was initially part of C with Classes, but it isn't part of modern C++(standard C++). The feature is called call/return. This is an example: class myclass { call() { /* do something before each call to a function. */ } return() { /* do something else after each call to a function. */ } ... }; I find this feature very interesting. Does any modern language have this particular feature?

  • Reporting Services Sum of Inner Group in Outer Group

    I have a report in Reporting Services 2008 using ASP.net 3.5 and SQL Server 2008. The report has 2 groupings and a detail row. This is the current format: Outer Group Inner Group Detail Row The Detail Row represents an item on a receipt and a receipt can have multiple items. Each receipt was paid with a certain payment method. So the Outer Group is grouped by payment type, the Inner Group is grouped by the receipt's ID, and the Detail Row is each item for the given receipt. My raw data result set has two important columns: The Amount Received and the Amount Applied. The Amount Received is how much money in total was collected for all the items on the receipt. The Amount Applied is how much money each item got from the total Amount Received. Sample Result Set: ReceiptID Item ItemID AmountReceived AmountApplied Payment Method ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 Book 1 $200.00 $40.00 Cash 1 CD 2 $200.00 $20.00 Cash 1 Software 3 $200.00 $100.00 Cash 1 Backpack 4 $200.00 $40.00 Cash The Inner Group displays the AmountReceived correctly as $200. However, the Outer Group displays the AmountReceived as $800, because I believe that it is going off each detail row which in this case is a count of 4 items. What I want is to see in the Outer Group that the Amount Received is $200. I tried restricting the scope in my SUM function to be the Inner Group, but I get the error "The scope parameter must be set to a string constant that is equal to either the name of a containing group, the name of a containing data region, or the name of a dataset." Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this issue? Thanks.

  • Java extends classes - Share the extended class fields within the super class.

    Straight to the point... I have a class public class P_Gen{ protected String s; protected Object oP_Gen; public P_Gen(String str){ s = str; oP_Gen = new Myclass(this); } } Extended class: public class P extends P_Gen{ protected Object oP; public P(String str){ oP = new aClass(str); super(str); } } MyClass: public class MyClass{ protected Object oMC; public MyClass(P extendedObject){ oMc = oP.getSomething(); } } I came to realize that MyClass can only be instantiated with (P_Gen thisObject) as opposed to (P extendedObject). The situation is that I have code generated a bunch of classes like P_Gen. For each of them I have generated a class P which would contains my P specific custom methods and fields. When I'll regenerate my code in the future, P would not be overwritten as P_Gen would. ** So what happened in my case???!!!... I realized that MyClass would beneficiate from the info stored in P in addition to only P_Gen. Would that possible? I know it's not JAVA "realistic" since another class that extends P_Gen might not have the same fields... BY DESIGN, P_Gen will not be extended by anything but P.... And that's where it kinda make sens. :-) at least in other programming language ;-) In other programming language, it seems like P_Gen.this === P.this, in other word, "this" becomes a combination of P and P_Gen. Is there a way to achieve this knowing that P_Gen won't be extended by anything than P?

  • is it good "form" to declare new classes in the same file ?

    I code in Python a lot, and I frequently create classes. Now, I'm not sure if this is good Python form, but I just declare a class in the same file as my main(). class foo { ... } I'm wondering if it's good form in Java to do the same? For example, class foo { public static int name; public static int numPoints; public static int[] points; } public class bar { public static void main(String[] args) { ... } } Does not throw errors in Eclipse, so it must be allowed. But is it okay to do? Would it be better to just declare this class in a separate file..? Edit: I just want to emphasize that my new class literally is just a container to hold the same type of data multiple times, and literally will only have like 3 values. So it's total about 5 lines of code. The question is - does this merit a new file?

  • Tip on Reusing Classes in Different .NET Project Types

    All of us have class libraries that we developed for use in our projects. When you create a .NET Class Library project with many classes, you can use that DLL in ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications. However, for Silverlight and Windows Phone, these .NET Class Libraries cannot be used. The reason is Silverlight and Windows Phone both use a scaled down version of .NET and thus do not have access to the full .NET framework class library. However, there are many classes and functionality that will work in the full .NET and in the scaled down versions that Silverlight and Windows Phone use.Let’s take an example of a class that you might want to use in all of the above mentioned projects. The code listing shown below might be something that you have in a Windows Form or an ASP.NET application. public class StringCommon{  public static bool IsAllLowerCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^A-Z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }   public static bool IsAllUpperCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^a-z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }} The StringCommon class is very simple with just two methods, but you know that the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace is available in Silverlight and Windows Phone. Thus, you know that you may reuse this class in your Silverlight and Windows Phone projects. Here is the problem: if you create a Silverlight Class Library project and you right-click on that project in Solution Explorer and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu, the class file StringCommon.cs will be copied from the original location and placed into the Silverlight Class Library project. You now have two files with the same code. If you want to change the code you will now need to change it in two places! This is a maintenance nightmare that you have just created. If you then add this to a Windows Phone Class Library project, you now have three places you need to modify the code! Add As LinkInstead of creating three separate copies of the same class file, you want to leave the original class file in its original location and just create a link to that file from the Silverlight and Windows Phone class libraries. Visual Studio will allow you to do this, but you need to do one additional step in the Add Existing Item dialog (see Figure 1). You will still right mouse click on the project and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu. You will still highlight the file you want to add to your project, but DO NOT click on the Add button. Instead click on the drop down portion of the Add button and choose the “Add As Link” menu item. This will now create a link to the file on disk and will not copy the file into your new project. Figure 1: Add as Link will create a link, not copy the file over. When this linked file is added to your project, there will be a different icon next to that file in the Solution Explorer window. This icon signifies that this is a link to a file in another folder on your hard drive.   Figure 2: The Linked file will have a different icon to show it is a link. Of course, if you have code that will not work in Silverlight or Windows Phone -- because the code has dependencies on features of .NET that are not supported on those platforms – you  can always wrap conditional compilation code around the offending code so it will be removed when compiled in those class libraries. SummaryIn this short blog entry you learned how to reuse one of your class libraries from ASP.NET, Windows Forms or WPF applications in your Silverlight or Windows Phone class libraries. You can do this without creating a maintenance nightmare by using the “Add a Link” feature of the Add Existing Item dialog.   • Scrollbar within a scrollbar only make the inner scrollbar jump to id

    I have a page that requires a scrollbar - http://www.aus-media.com/dev/site_BYJ/schedule-pricing/pricing.html You will notice (unless you are running at a high resolution with a big screen) that there is an outer scrollbar for the main page as well as an inner scrollbar for the content. When you click on one of the sub items e.g. payments you will notice that the outer page scrolls down as well as the inner scrollbar. Does anybody know of a way to only scroll the inner scrollbar, so only it jumps to the id? Thanks guys Nik

    In my application's main class (subclass of Application), I have a public inner class that simply contains 3 public string objects. In the parent class I declare an object of that inner class. public class MainApplication extends Application { public class Data { public String x; public String y; public String z; } private Data data; MainApplication() { data = new Data() data.x = "String"; } } After I instantiate the object in the constructor, I get a runtime error when I try to assign any of the inner class object's variables. Any idea what's up here??

And the .is() selector can look for multiple classes but will return true if the selector have at least one of the classes. But I wan't to achieve a way to check if a selector have both of the classes, and only if it has both of the classes do action. Any pointers?

  • hiding inner class implementation using namespace

    Hi all I am developing a library and a would like to provide my users a public interface separate from the real implementatino that is hidden in a namespace. This way, I could change only the class HiddenQueue without changing myQueue that will be exposed to users only. If I put the C++ code of HiddenQueue in the myQueue.cpp file the compiler complains saying _innerQueue has incomplete type. I thought that the linker was able to resolve this. What I am doing wrong here?   • How to structure classes in the filesystem?

    I have a few (view) classes. Table, Tree, PagingColumn, SelectionColumn, SparkLineColumn, TimeColumn. currently they're flat under app/view like this: app/view/Table app/view/Tree app/view/PagingColumn ... I thought about restructuring it, because the Trees and Tables use the columns, but there are some columns, which only work in a tree, some who work in trees and tables and in the future there are probably some who only work in tables, I don't know. My first idea was like this: app/view/Table app/view/Tree app/view/column/PagingColumn app/view/column/SelectionColumn app/view/column/SparkLineColumn app/view/column/TimeColumn But since the SelectionColumn is explicitly for trees, I have the fear that future developers could get the idea of missuse them. But how to restructure it probably? Like this: app/view/table/panel/Table app/view/tree/panel/Tree app/view/tree/column/PagingColumn app/view/tree/column/SelectionColumn app/view/column/SparkLineColumn app/view/column/TimeColumn Or like this: app/view/Table app/view/Tree app/view/column/SparkLineColumn app/view/column/TimeColumn app/view/column/tree/PagingColumn app/view/column/tree/SelectionColumn

  • Design: How to model / where to store relational data between classes

    I'm trying to figure out the best design here, and I can see multiple approaches, but none that seems "right." There are three relevant classes here: Base, TradingPost, and Resource. Each Base has a TradingPost which can offer various Resources depending on the Base's tech level. Where is the right place to store the minimum tech level a base must possess to offer any given resource? A database seems like overkill. Putting it in each subclass of Resource seems wrong--that's not an intrinsic property of the Resource. Do I have a mediating class, and if so, how does it work? It's important that I not be duplicating code; that I have one place where I set the required tech level for a given item. Essentially, where does this data belong? P.S. Feel free to change the title; I struggled to come up with one that fits.

    Let me introduce my situation: I have Java EE application and in one package, I want to have classes which will act primarily as cache for some data from database, for example: class that will hold all articles for our website class that will hold all categories etc. Every class should have some update() method, which will update data for that class from database and also some other methods for data manipulation specific for that data type. Now, I would like to call update() method for all class instances (there will be exactly one class instance for every class) from one place. What is the best design?

  • How to write loosely coupled classes in node.js

    I am trying to understand how to design node.js applications, but it seems there is something I can't grasp about asynchronous programming. Let's say my application needs to access a database. In a synchronous environment I would implement a data access class with a read() method, returning an associative array. In node.js, because code is executed asynchronously, this method can't return a value, so, after execution, it will have to "do" something as a side effect. It will then contain at least 1 line of extraneous code which has nothing to do with data access. Multiply this for all methods and all classes and you will very soon have an unmanageable "code soup". What is the proper way to handle this problem? Am I approaching it the wrong way?

  • OOP PHP make separate classes or one

    I'm studying OOP PHP and working on a small personal project but I have hard time grasping some concepts. Let's say I have a list of items, each item belongs to subcategory, and each subcategory belongs to category. So should I make separate classes for category (with methods to list all categories, add new category, delete category), class for subcategories and class for items? Or should I make creating, listing and deleting categories as methods for item class? Both category and subcategory are very simple and basically consist of ID, Name and parentID (for subcategory).

  • Managing different utility classes between engine and libraries

    I'm currently in updating some engine code (which does not work, so it is more like creating a engine). I've decided to swap over to SFML (instead of my own crappy renderer, window manager, and audio), Box2D (since I need physics, but have none), and some small utilities I've built myself. The problem is that each of the project mentioned over use different types for things like Vector2, etc. So to the question: is it a good idea to replace Box2D and SFML vectors with my own vector class (which is one of my better implementations)? My idea then was to have a separate .lib with all my classes that should be shared between all the projects in the solution.
