• Combine the Address & Search Bars in Firefox

  The Search Bar in Firefox is very useful for finding additional information or images while browsing but the UI space it takes up can be frustrating at times. Now you can reclaim that UI space and still have access to all that searching goodness with the Foobar extension. Note: This is about the Foobar Firefox extension and not to be confused with Foobar2000 the open source music player. Before If you have the “Search Bar” displayed there is no doubt that it is taking up valuable space in your browser’s UI. What you need is the ability to reclaim that UI space and still have the same access to your search capability as before…no more sacrificing one for a gain with the other. After As soon as you have installed the extension you can see that the top part of your browser will look much sleeker without the “Search Bar” to clutter it up. The “Search Engine Icon” will now be visible inside of your “Address Bar” as seen here. You will be able to access the same “Search Engine Menu” as before by clicking on the “Search Engine Icon”. There are two display modes for search results (setting available in the “Options”). The first one shown here is “Simple Mode” where all results are in a condensed format. Notice that not only are there search suggestions but also “Bookmarks & History” listings as well. You can literally get the best of both when conducting a search. Note: The number of entries for search suggestions and bookmark/history listings can be adjusted higher or lower in the “Options”. The second one is “Rich Mode” where the results are shown with more details. Choose the “mode” that best suits your personal style. For our first example you can see the results when we conducted a quick search on “Windows 7” (using the first of the three offerings shown from Bing). Our second example was a search for “Flowers” using our Photobucket search engine. Once again nice results opened in a new tab for us. Options The options are easy to go through. It is really nice to be able to choose the number of results that you want displayed and the format that you want them shown in. Note: Changing the “Suggestion popup style” will require a browser restart to take effect. Conclusion If you love using the “Search Bar” in Firefox but want to reclaim the UI space then you will definitely want to add this extension to your browser. The ability to customize the number of results and choose the formatting make this extension even better. • Share Folders & Files Between Vista and XP Machines

  Since Microsoft has three operating systems in use, chances are you’ll find yourself needing to share files between XP, Vista, Windows 7, or some combination of the three. Here we take a look at sharing between a Vista and XP on your home network. Share Without Password Protected Sharing If you’re not worried about who’s accessing the files and folders, the easiest method is to disable Password Protected Sharing. So on the Vista machine open Network and Sharing Center. Under Sharing and Discovery make sure Network Discovery, File Sharing, and, Public Folder Sharing are turned on. Also turn off Password Protected Sharing… Now go into the Vista Public folder, located in C:\Users\Public, and add what you want to share or create a new folder. In this example we created a new folder called XP_Share and added some files to it. On the XP machine go into My Network Places and under Network Tasks click on View Workgroup Computers. Now you’ll see all of the computers on your network which should be part of the same Workgroup. Here we need to double-click on the Vista computer. And there we go…no password to enter so we can access the XP_Share folder or anything else that is located in the Public folder. Share with Password Protected Sharing If you want to keep Password Protected Sharing turned on, then we need to do things a little different. When it’s turned on and you try to access the Vista machine from XP, you’re prompted for a password, and no matter what you think the credentials are, you can’t get access…very annoying. So what we need to do is add the XP Machine as a user. Right-click on Computer from the Start Menu or desktop icon and select Manage from the context menu. The Computer Management screen opens up and you want to expand Local Users and Groups, then the Users folder. Then right-click any open area an select New User. Now create a new user name and password, you can also fill in the other fields if you want. Then make sure to uncheck User must change password at next logon and check the box next to Password never expires. Click the Create button and close out of the New User screen. You’ll then see the new user we created in the list and you can close out of the Computer Management window. Now back on the XP computer when you double-click on the Vista machine, your prompted to log in. Just type in the username and password you just created. Now you’ll have access to the Public folder contents. Set up Sharing on XP If you want to access a shared folder from the Vista computer located on the XP machine, it’s the same process in reverse. On the XP computer in Shared Documents, right-click on the folder you want to share and select Sharing and Security. Then select the radio button next to Share this folder and click Ok. Go into Computer Management and create a new user… Now from the Vista machine double click on the XP machine icon, enter the password, then access the folders and files you need. If you have multiple versions of Windows on your home network, you’ll now be able to access files and folders from each of them. • Au revoir, Python?

  I'm an ex-C++ programmer who's recently discovered (and fallen head-over-heels with) Python. I've taken some time to become reasonably fluent in Python, but I've encountered some troubling realities that may lead me to drop it as my language of choice, at least for the time being. I'm writing this in the hopes that someone out there can talk me out of it by convincing me that my concerns are easily circumvented within the bounds of the python universe. I picked up python while looking for a single flexible language that will allow me to build end-to-end working systems quickly on a variety of platforms. These include: - web services - mobile apps - cross-platform client apps for PC Development speed is more of a priority at the time-being than execution speed. However, in order to improve performance over time without requiring major re-writes or architectural changes I think it's imperative to be able to interface easily with Java. That way, I can use Java to optimize specific components as the application scales, without throwing away any code. As far as I can tell, my requirement for an enterprise-capable, platform-independent, fast language with a large developer base means it would have to be Java. .NET or C++ would not cut it due to their respective limitations. Also Java is clearly de rigeur for most mobile platforms. Unfortunately, tragically, there doesn't seem to be a good way to meet all these demands. Jython seems to be what I'm looking for in principle, except that it appears to be practically dead, with no one developing, supporting, or using it to any great degree. And also Jython seems too married to the Java libraries, as you can't use many of the CPython standard libraries with it, which has a major impact on the code you end up writing. The only other option that I can see is to use JPype wrapped in marshalling classes, which may work although it seems like a pain and I wonder if it would be worth it in the long run. On the other hand, everything I'm looking for seems to be readily available by using JRuby, which seems to be much better supported. As things stand, I think this is my best option. I'm sad about this because I absolutely love everything about Python, including the syntax. The perl-like constructs in Ruby just feel like such a step backwards to me in terms of readability, but at the end of the day most of the benefits of python are available in Ruby as well. So I ask you - am I missing something here? Much of what I've said is based on what I've read, so is this summary of the current landscape accurate, or is there some magical solution to the Python-Java divide that will snuff these concerns and allow me to comfortably stay in my happy Python place?

• More Changes...

  Stuff has changed drastically for me in the past two to three years.  I moved over 1000 miles from Saint Louis.  I go outside and I get up in front of crowds with less issues.  Now I'm changing jobs again.  I'm not really sure what to say here.  I was obviously unhappy and I needed to do something different.  So quit two days ago and I guess it worked out that I end with B&R this Friday, then head to TEC and SPS Huntsville and a week from this Monday I start my new job at Gig Werks.  I'm not sure what to expect or where I'm heading, but I think it's a step in the right direction.  I won't really know what kind of impact this will have on my life for at least another 6 months to a year. For some reason I can't sleep tonight and I think it's really a reflection of my last day.  Tomorrow is an ending and a beginning at the same time.  So it's both kind of sad and exciting.  I don't know why I'm really excited to go to Disney Land for the second time ever in my life time.  I get to ride the Teacups.  For the longest time when I was a kid I wanted to go to Disney Land.  I wanted to ride the teacups.  In 2007, at the age of 25, I rode the teacups for my first ever visit to LA.  That was the start of finally syncing up with my childhood goals.  I wanted to live near a major city.  I wanted to visit all the major cities in the world.  I wanted to see everything and meet everyone.  This job change will probably turn into something great I just don't know it yet.  I'm walking again outside my comfort zone and stepping into uncharted territory.  In 2-3 years I'll probably write another blog post how this week lead to something great.  It just stinks when you have to leave behind something you know and love.  I will miss all my current colleagues, but I'm sure I'll gain some new ones and keep in touch with the old.  To 2010 being a great year for change and hopefully by the end of the year I can say I went to Europe.  To reaching my goals and my dreams.  Don't let anyone stop you from getting what you want in life (unless you are axe murderer please don't kill anyone that's just wrong).  Have a good weekend everyone!

• Single page not appearing in Google Search

  Description I have a static franchise website which has various sub pages each dedicated to an individual franchisee. For each franchisee the page, the only thing slightly similar between all of them are the page titles, they follow this structure: <title> Welcome to THE_COMPANY - PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION Services, THE_LOCATION </title> THE_COMPANY and PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION are the same across all franchisees, however THE_LOCATION changes depeding on where they are located in the UK. Each franchisee page has the following <meta /> tags: <meta name="DC.creator" content="user"/> <meta name="DC.format" content="text/html"/> <meta name="DC.language" content="en"/> <meta name="DC.date.modified" content="2014-01-23T11:22:31+00:00"/> <meta name="DC.date.created" content="2014-01-23T11:22:09+00:00"/> <meta name="DC.type" content="Page"/> <meta name="DC.distribution" content="Global"/> <meta name="robots" content="ALL"/> <meta name="distribution" content="Global"/> The main content on each franchisee page is completely different. The Problem There is one particular franchisee page, located in Area A.. Which will not appear in Google Search results at all. However every single other franchisee (if you Google Search for "THE_COMPANY, THE_LOCATION" is number 1). And if I do the same search on Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo, the Area A franchisee is the first result on all of them. Has Google for some reason black listed one page on the site? What I Have Tried Ensuring the page is referenced in my sitemap.xml file 'Fetching as Google Bot' the link www.the_company.co.uk/areaa When that came back as OK I would submit to index Resubmitting the sitemap.xml file in Webmaster Tools Linking to the Area A page from another pages content For this I also waited about 3 weeks before checking again to give Google time to re-index Making a change to the page content and waiting another 2 / 3 weeks Removing the page completely and recreating it with an alternative URL The closest thing I have found to this issue is this StackOverflow question but this particular franchisee has existed for almost a year, it used to appear on Google searches however no longer does. I'm guessing the Panda update wasn't too happy with something on the page, but it hasn't effected anything else on the site and I am at a loss for things to try. I would greatly appreciate any information or thoughts as to what could have caused this Thanks. Update It appears Google likes to drop pages every now and then from the index, despite my steps above, I left the site alone and the page appeared back in the SERPs by itself.

• PHP - Internal APIs/Libraries - What makes sense?

  I've been having a discussion lately with some colleagues about the best way to approach a new project, and thought it'd be interesting to get some external thoughts thrown into the mix. Basically, we're redeveloping a fairly large site (written in PHP) and have differing opinions on how the platform should be setup. Requirements: The platform will need to support multiple internal websites, as well as external (non-PHP) projects which at the moment consist of a mobile app and a toolbar. We have no plans/need in the foreseeable future to open up an API externally (for use in products other than our own). My opinion: We should have a library of well documented native model classes which can be shared between projects. These models will represent everything in our database and can take advantage of object orientated features such as inheritance, traits, magic methods, etc. etc. As well as employing ORM. We can then add an API layer on top of these models which can basically accept requests and route them to the appropriate methods, translating the response so that it can be used platform independently. This routing for each method can be setup as and when it's required. Their opinion: We should have a single HTTP API which is used by all projects (internal PHP ones or otherwise). My thoughts: To me, there are a number of issues with using the sole HTTP API approach: It will be very expensive performance wise. One page request will result in several additional http requests (which although local, are still ones that Apache will need to handle). You'll lose all of the best features PHP has for OO development. From simple inheritance, to employing the likes of ORM which can save you writing a lot of code. For internal projects, the actual process makes me cringe. To get a users name, for example, a request would go out of our box, over the LAN, back in, then run through a script which calls a method, JSON encodes the output and feeds that back. That would then need to be JSON decoded, and be presented as an array ready to use. Working with arrays, as appose to objects, makes me sad in a modern PHP framework. Their thoughts (and my responses): Having one method of doing thing keeps things simple. - You'd only do things differently if you were using a different language anyway. It will become robust. - Seeing as the API will run off the library of models, I think my option would be just as robust. What do you think? I'd be really interested to hear the thoughts of others on this, especially as opinions on both sides are not founded on any past experience.

• Restarting explorer from a batch file only opens an explorer window

  In one part of a batch file (kind of), I need to restart Explorer. I use the following method to accomplish this: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe >nul explorer.exe :: I have also tried: %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start /b %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start /d %winDir%\explorer.exe (as suggested by panda-34) :: :: I've even tried delaying the above commands with: ping localhost -n 11 >nul Then this happens: explorer.exe is successfully terminated (denoted by the lack of taskbar and desktop) An explorer window opens, which I am left with indefinitely (see Image 1) I can only then restart explorer by manually starting a new process from Task Manager (Win + R doesn't respond), even though explorer.exe is actually already in the process list, strangely enough.. (see Image 2)   Now, I say "kind of" as I'm running the batch file from a self-executing SFX archive, created with WinRAR. When executed, the contents of the archive are extracted to %temp% and a user-defined bootstrapper (in this case, my batch file) is run upon successful extraction. The strangest thing about it, though, is that if you manually extract the contents of the archive and run the batch file then explorer restarts correctly. It only ever glitches when called from an SFX. • Problems setting NTP sever with w32tm for a DC that is a Hyper-V guest

  Hello ! I have tried to sett my DC to get its time from several NTP severs. I follow this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/24298/w32time-sync-problems-for-hyper-v-guests-w32time-event-ids-38-24-29-35/24299#24299) to do it. First I disable Time Synchronization in the Hyper-V Integration Services for each guest. Then restart the Windows Time serviceon the guest. I had before this used this command: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp.uio.no;timekeeper. uio.no;nissen.uio.no;0.no.pool.ntp.org;1.no.pool.ntp.org;2.no.pool.ntp.org" /syn cfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update And the cmd sad: The command completed successfully. But the time was still 10 min wrong... I run w32tm again after restarted the DC without it having any effect. • 4in6 tunneling (via OpenVPN?)

  I have a local network with internet access. But unfortunately IPv4 internet connection speed is limited to 1mbps, which is realy sad. Fortunately I have a native IPv6, and there is no connection speed limit over IPv6. So, in order to get a good internet connection I made a plan: connect to the VPN-service over IPv6, and pass all IPv4 traffic through IPv6 tunnel, or something like that, I think you get the idea. I suggested to use service like HideMyAss.com, but unfortunately they don't support IPv6. The question is: Is there any existing VPN service that will make my dreams come true, and is easy to use, which I could connect over PPTP or OpenVPN (I want to set up connection to VPN in my router settings). Edit: It seems like there are couple of VPN services that supports IPv6 (it's odd, but the biggest VPN services support only IPv4), and there is none providing 4in6 tunnels. So, I came to the following solution: rent a VPS with IPv6 address, and manually setup 4in6 tunnel. I'm not good at networking, never did things like that, and don't know where to start, and what should I do. The use case, as I undestand, should look like this: I connect from my home computer to the VPS via OpenVPN, and after that all my IPv4 traffic pass through IPv6 (server do the job). OpenVPN - because I want to configure VPN connection to server in my router (Asus RT-N16?). How can I achieve this?

• What exactly is a Mobile mouse? + Mouse Recommendation

  I am really disappointed with Logitech. My first cordless wireless mouse was from them and it lasted like 5 years. So I decided to get another one from them http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10099373&catid= And this mouse sucks bad. After 6 months it broke. I returned it under warranty and got a new one now 4-6 month later it is on the verge of breaking again.... You pay like $50 for this mouse and it lasts like 6 months that sad. I just lost faith in Logitech mice as I remember my bro also had a logitech mouse too and it broke after like 6 months. He then bought another logitech mouse(different model) that has been working for maybe 2 years(and no signs of breaking) but I am not crazy about the mouse(I don't like the 2 buttons by the wheel) and I not sure if they even sell it(maybe they got rid of it because it lasts too long). http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1578495&CatId=1285 So I am looking at a Microsoft mouse. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10125565&catid= I am looking at this one but I am not sure what they mean by mobile mouse. I think that is what MS calls notebook mice. So I am not sure if this would be a good mouse to get for a desktop. I see it uses like a micro usb receiver but I am not sure if it is smaller then a standard mouse. But almost all the mice I looked at at futureshop.ca or staples are labeled notebook mice or mobile mice. So not sure what mice would be right for me. I don't want a corded one though. I really liked the LX6 design alot but it can't last more than 6 months. Thanks

• Why can't I reconnect to my Philips SHB9000 bluetooth headset?

  This is so annoying. When I connected my Philips SHB9000 bluetooth to my Windows 7 (64 bit) for the very first time, it worked well. I had to manually change the default playback device, but otherwise it worked. Then, when I start up my computer from standby, it's nearly random when I can reconnect or not. My last option is to remove the bluetooth device and reconnect it. But now, even that doesn't work. The sad thing is, this used to work better on Windows 7 beta. Windows Update has a new driver which fails to install. Searching for this driver yields nothing. I thought all vendors had an official site for their drivers? Well, Philips seems to have none. If there is no answer to this problem, my advice is to NOT buy this headset. It's good looking, the sound is nice, but what need do we have from that if we can't use the bloody device?

• Windows 8: Clean Install Fails BEFORE country Screen

  G'day, I've been trying to (clean) install Windows 8 on my PC now for over two weeks now, and it's really getting old. You can see here that I've outlined my issue to the Windows Technical Community, which has resulted in... absolutely no help at all. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_install/windows-8-clean-install-fails-before-country/64229d0a-0220-45a9-bdc6-c41062df8a75 Tl;dr? Yeah, me too. Basically, I've shrunk the HDD, it's working (I'm on that PC on XP). I've put both the x64 and the x86 DVD's, AND an another HDD with W8 installed on it from my test machine, and they ALL Fail to load. (I get the slanty windows logo, and after about 10 seconds BOOM. Sad face error screen.) I really don't want to have to remove the video card, or the unevenly/not partnered DIMM in the 2nd Memory channel - because the case is .. stupid, and in an awkward spot, but I'm running out of ideas! PS. I tried turning on ACHI tonight. All that resulted in was XP wigging out about new drivers & explorer.exe crashing. Fun times! :(

• SATA HDD stuttering on reads (LED on)

  I hope I can get some new ideas to solve the issue. What I have: AMD Phenom II X4 905e Box, Sockel AM3 Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4, AMD 790X, AM3 ATX WD Caviar GreenPower 1,5TB SATA II 4GB Kit OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum Low-Voltage CL7 HIS HD 4670 iSilence4 DDR3 1024MB Native HDMI Dual-DVI, PCI-Express Behavior: Everything works normally excepting the HDD accesses. The drive seems to get stuck in reading data (LED drive by Mainboard is on for a while) then recovers and goes on. There is a delay of more than 30s sometimes. Often it is a matter of 5-10s. This does not seem related to the workload of the disk. What I tried so far: Use different SATA port: I switched from the SATA3 to SATA2 then the SATA driven by the CPU, no difference. Turned AHCI off, drove the SATA in IDE mode, same behavior, now I felt like the HDD has problems Deactivated energy saving settings (BeQuiet, ...), disabled 3 CPUs (msconfig) supposing some race condition or trouble with changing freqs, same trouble With Windows7 Professional 64Bit, I installed the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B976418&x=8&y=9 with no success. The problem description matches what I experienced, so I felt lucky but was quite in a sad mood after being deceived. Burned the DLG 5.04f DataLifeGuard CD from WD to check the drive. All tests passed, to my surprise! Installed an Ubuntu on the same drive i386 flavour. Drive still in IDE mode, exactly the same behavior. So the OS does not matter. What I did not try yet: http://www.gigabyte.eu/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3263 I have a F2 BIOS and there is a F3a Beta, did someone have similar issues that were solved by this update? It is a beta so I fear upgrading a bit and I could find no release notes at all on the net, not really serious work maybe they had issues translating from Chinese??? Using another HDD drive Does someone have other hints or a similar issue? Maybe it is neither the HDD nor the Mainboard/BIOS?

• Is current SATA 6 gb/s equipment simply unreliable?

  I have a 45-disk array of Seagate Barracuda 3 TB ST3000DM001 (yes these are desktop drives I'm aware of that) in a Supermicro sc847 JBOD, connected via LSI 9285. I have found a solution for the problem description below by reducing speed via MegaCli -PhySetLinkSpeed -phy0 2 -a0; for i in $(seq 48); do MegaCli -PhySetLinkSpeed -phy${i} 2 -a0; done and rebooting. The question remains: Is this typical for current 6 gb/s equipment? Is this the sad state of SATA storage? Or is some of my equipment (the sff-8088 cables come to mind) bad? The Problem was: Synchronizing HW RAID-6, disks kept offlining. Fetching SMART values reveiled that those which offlined did not increase powered-on hours anymore. That is, their firmware (CC4C) seems to crash. Digging into the matter by switching to Software RAID-6, with the disks passed-through, I got tons of kernel messages scattered across all disks, with 6 gb/s: sd 0:0:9:0: [sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [current] Info fld=0x0 sd 0:0:9:0: [sdb] Add. • Windows 7 boot issues

  Ok, I tried to install linux and dual boot my laptop with 7 ultimate. I messed up. When I tried to boot to 7 it said no. Something along the lines of device not found. So I being young and stupid I uninstalled linux which I could boot into, and I still could not boot to windows. Next step was to run the startup fixes from the boot cd. Swing and a miss, I also ran the fixmbr and fixboot. Which brings us up to my current place. I installed 7 again on my blank partition in hopes I could access my other partion. No dice. So my question to yall is how can I fix my original filesystem or at least get to the stuff on it. In the new 7 install the old partion does not even have a drive letter. That is my sad story any help would be apreciated.

• Wireless connection drops when wired computer starts a game.

  Starting this week I have had a strange problem on my network. Some background of my setup: Internet is provided by a adsl-modem. A D-link Dir-600 router is hooked up to to adsl-modem. My computer is hooked up to the router using a cat-5 cable. My wife's computer is hooked up using a wireless usb dongle, TP-Link TL-WN821N. Both computers use windows 7 64-bit home premium. Up until this week everything was normal, we could for instance play Dungeons & Dragons Online together without any network issues. Now every time I start DDO or any other network game, for instance L4D, the whole wireless network drops. I have confirmed that it's not just her computer using an Samsung Galaxy Spica android phone. Shutting down the game on my end restores the wireless connection automagicly. My wife can start DDO without the net dropping but if I plug in a wireless network card in my computer and start up the game the connection drops. So it seems like something my computer, and my computer only, does when starting a game makes the wireless connection write a sad note and kill it self but for the life of me I can't figure out what that might be. I could hook her computer up using cat-5 but I would prefer not to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be, what I can do to fix it or what I should do to get more data regarding what is happening?

• 10GE network: Is it still deadly expensive? Any options?

  Hi! I am building home cluster where I going to have about 16 nodes which can live with 1G ports, but I really want to have 10GE on file server & central node. It's all local, so no need for cabels longer than 3-5m. And ofcourse I want to spend as little money as possible (not going to spend more than whole cluster costs) :-) What are my options? 1) Legacy solution is to take some 24-48 port 1GE switch, and connect to file/central nodes via 4-8 aggregated links. This will work I guess, cost is very acceptable, but I am not sure if it's ok to use that much aggregated links. And ofcourse it would be hard to double bandwidth when needed... :-D 2) Switch with several 10GE uplink 'ports'. As far as I see, they all require modules which costs about 1000$, so I will need 4 10G modules, and 2 10GE cards... Smells like way more than 5000$+... 3) Connect file & central node via 2 10G cards directly, and put 4 quadport 1GE NICs on fileserver. I am saving on 2 10G modules and a switch, fileserver will have to do packet routing, but it's still gonna have alot of CPU's left :-) 4) Any other options? Infiniband? 5) Are MyriNet adaptors works fine? I guess there are no cheaper options? 6) Hmm... Scrap fileserver, put it all on central node and provide dedicated 1GE port for each of the nodes... This is sad...

• Installing Windows 7 over PXE, preferably with domain autojoin

  At an educational non-profit, I've inherited a previously set-up Windows domain that, after the first reinstall of the machines, we ended up not using by simply not joining machines back into the domain. Over last summer, before the annual reinstall for shipping machines to the summer school, I toyed with the idea of installing Windows 7 over network, instead of just imaging the machines. It took a bit longer than I expected to figure out the basics; honestly, I expected that Windows would be more friendly for PXE installation out of the box. What I'm interested in is best practices for installing Windows 7 over PXE with domain autojoin. I'd love it if the whole setup could optionally be hosted on a UNIX based system as well. I've had some success by preparing an ISO using Windows Deployment Kit, and loading the ISO into memory. This was needed since I wanted a menu, and I think I couldn't get PXELINUX to chainload into Windows' bootloader. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out much about customization of the Windows setup in that timeframe nor could I get Samba to work properly; studying the stuff ended up being too lengthy, especially the portion where I edited a disk image on Windows and copied it outside. WDK didn't make things easier by mounting the disk image into RAM, and writing it in its entirety when done with it, making me a very sad boy. I've recently found a different approach, too, that appears to be closer to Microsoft's original idea for netboot deployment and does not involve ISOs. So my question boils down to the following. What exact approach do you use for netbooting Windows 7 setup? How can Windows 7 setup be best customized to be completely unattended, including installation on specific system partition and not destroying the data partition, creation of passworded admin and default user, choice of MAC-address-based hostname, and joining a domain? As much details as possible for everyone's future reference would be appreciated. WDS isn't a bad choice, but if a Linux-based install can be used, that'd be better.

• Reliable backup software for windows network/samba shares.

  Hi All, I have a Win2003 server that works as a pdc for a number of XP boxes, and a couple related FreeBSD boxes. I need to back up roaming profiles, non-roaming profiles via network shares, local hard drive data, and files on the FreeBSD boxes via samba shares. I have tried Genie Backup Manager and Backup4All pro, and both have excellent features, but both also begin to fail disastrously with more than a few days use. Mostly, the errors seem to have been from the backup catalog getting out of synch with itself. Whatever it is, there is no excuse for a backup software that says it backed up files when it really didn't, or the log saying it backed up exactly the same file 10,000 times in a single run, or flat-out crashing, or any of the other myriad problems I've run into with these. Really sad for products that fill such an important need. Anyway, does anyone know of a backup software that works reliably and can do the following? Scheduled backups for multiple jobs, without a user logged in. Backup from local hard drives or network shares. Incremental backups. Thanks! • Microphone doesn't work

  I'm having a trouble with my built in microphone. Even if I use headphone with mic, it doesn't really work. The weird thing is, if I clap the green lines of the speaker icon jumps, but if I speak it doesn't. I have also tried some recordings, but I can not hear myself and adjusting the volume didn't help at all. I tried to restore it, still no change. I have updated it in the device manager, but it said there that it's up to date and the devices are working properly. Until I decided to recover the whole system (wherein I pressed zero and switch on button) to my surprise, the settings became different, most programs were deleted, even my files. It's like it was formatted and I'm so sad that the mic was not fixed. I really don't know what to do now. My laptop model is Toshiba satellite m840. I want to it return to its settings/set up just before I Recover the system and bring back all the programs that we're installed and of course, most of all, to fix my microphone so I can use Skype again and other video calling application.. • Hibernate & Sleep broken after IE 9 RTM installation in Windows 7 x64.

  I have a question about hibernation. I installed Internet Explorer 9 RTM x64 on my Windows 7 x64 SP1 desktop machine. After this, computer don't entry the hibernation or (hybrid) sleep state properly. After I hibernate the computer the monitor become blank screen and the keyboard and mouse are inactive. But the machine is still running and there isn't any possibility to switch them off as only with power button. But this is recognized on next start as ineligible because of log entry with message “The previous system shutdown at xx:xx:xx on ?xx.?xx.?x was unexpected“ and menu with safe mode option. I’m clearly not sure if it has something to do with Internet Explorer installation, but I’m definitely guaranteed that before of this I never had some problems with hibernation or (hybrid) sleep. In Windows logs isn’t something suspect. I switched the hibernation off and on, installed new drivers for mainboard, graphic and network card, checked the hard disk, nothing was helpful. This is really sad, beacuse I don't like to switch the computer completely off because it takes longer to boot. Any suggestions?

• How to convince Out of state resume filtering?

  Hello folks! Personally I've applied to quiet a handful of IT admin jobs inside my state and to the ones that are way far away. The sad part is I never miss to get an interview with the jobs in my state, but get a call once in a blue moon from jobs out of my state. Note: All the jobs are of similar nature. Recently one of my friends told me that "Applicants with local addresses are the ones that are even looked upon". How true is this? Does filtering take place at address level before qualifications? Is using a PO box on resume acceptable [one for each state like CA, TX, VA]? Any other suggestions to get calls from out of state? • Removed Old Domain Trust. Now Progress (9.1D) can't open DB File

  My company has an old server, running Progress 9.1D on a Windows 2000 VM, which was used by our company OS (Vantage 6 by Epicor.) Vantage was our primary OS for a very long time. About 2 years ago, we migrated to a larger, corporate OS and we cancelled our service contract with Epicor. Yesterday, we removed an AD trust between the corporate domain and our old AD domain we used in the days of Vantage. After restarting the virtual server, I have been able to start the ProService for 9.1D Windows service, however, I can not get Vantage to start back up. When I run the application, I get the error in the message listed below. Transcript: ** Could not connect to server for database [progress db file], errno 0. (1432) How can I fix this? FYI, I haven't had to work with Progress in years and even then I wouldn't have considered myself a "novice"-- I'm even less knowledgeable than that title would suggest. Vantage had a lot of internal tools and I recall that Epicor support managed to prevent .pf scripts from being executed. If there was a Progress specific patch that needed to be applied, you had to do it within the Vantage software OR they had to remote into the machine to fix this. I may not be able to run a .pf script but I do know that I can log into the console-based server application. (Yes, I can't even recall which utility that was called. It is sad.) It's been a long time and I never had to digg into Progress that much. Please help and feel free to ask questions. If you need more info, I'll update this post.

• I really need help resolving a Window Vista BSOD (Blue Screen Crash) on my desktop

  Hi, thanks for taking the time to read this. I'll get straight to the details. My desktop is on the fritz; it keeps going to blue screen with the stop message of 0x0000007E immediately after the loading bar of vista, right before transitioning to the account selection screen. My desktop runs on a dual-core 32-bit processor with windows Vista Home(?) installed. I have 3 GB of ram as two separate modules, a 1GB acer module and a 2GB geil module. I have an ati video card, unfortunately I cannot recall the exact name but the chipset is ATI and the manufacturer is Sapphire and the card is on the lower end. My hard drive is 320GB (i think) partitioned into two. The C:\ partition is red lined, while the D:\ partition is still pretty empty. As per the advice of my friend, i tried restarting the system with the graphics card removed. Upon failure, i repeated the process removing one RAM module one at a time, but the system still failed to load. Vista would attempt to repair the system and it would initially report that the system was fixed, but vista really failed to fix the problem. After removing the memory modules, vista started to report it's inability to fix the problem. I tried running on safe mode and the driver listing would always stop at crcdisk.sys. I ran memory diagnostics using the windows memory diagnostic tool found in the screen after vista's failed attempt to fix the problem with no luck. the problem details are as such: Problem Event Name : StartupRepairV2 Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover 02: (vista's version number?) 03: 6 04: 720907 05: 0x7e 06: 0x7e 07: 0 08: 2 09: WrpRepair 10: 0 OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID 1033 any correct advice would be appreciated as i really need my pc to work so i can work on my projects. kinda sad, but i'm college of computer science and i have no idea what to do :P

• parallelizing code using openmp

  Hi, The function below contains nested for loops. There are 3 of them. I have given the whole function below for easy understanding. I want to parallelize the code in the innermost for loop as it takes maximum CPU time. Then i can think about outer 2 for loops. I can see dependencies and internal inline functions in the innermost for loop . Can the innermost for loop be rewritten to enable parallelization using openmp pragmas. Please tell how. I am writing just the loop which i am interested in first and then the full function where this loop exists for referance.
