• Live CD has black screen HP DV6

  Attempting to install/try ubuntu (11.10, 12.04) on my new laptop, using a liveCD (and tried USB). I get the purple screen (with the man/keyboard at the bottom) and after that the screen flashes bright white before going black. Ubuntu continues to load in the background, with login sound etc but the screen is off. I have tried as many different solutions as I could find including: using nomodestep, xforcevesa, i915.modeset=0, and also now i915.modeset=1 in boot options (seperately): varying consequences, but either I end up at a blinking cursor with no prompt, a command line (startx fails: no screen found), or the original blank screen again Tried booting from VirtualBox - it crashes at the same place the screen would go blank when using a CD/USB tried 11.04: I don't have this problem BUT when trying to install, I get a ubi-partman error 141 (possibly down to the three partitions that came on my laptop... not sure why HP needed there own separate partition for HP Tools...) Model: HP Pavillion DV6 6B08SA Processor: AMD Quad-Core A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD 6545G2 Dual Graphics (1.6 GHZ 4 MB L2 cache ) Chipset: AMD RS880M Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to partition the drive and install Ubuntu. I'm assuming the issue is graphics card related, although I have no confirmation of that. Update: Tried the ?orkarounds on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen - set gfxpayload=text changed nothing, removing splash did nothing and setting vesafb.nonsense=1 did nothing either. • Ubuntu 13.04 boot into black screen, even after installing nvidia drivers, fail at: "Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon..."

  I got a new machine with i7 4770k and gefore gtx660. I installed windows and then installed Ubuntu 13.04. In the installation everything went well, after the installation I again boot from the USB and choose try ubuntu, and installed boot-repair because windows automatically boot with no option for ubuntu. After I repaired the boot, I restarted and got into grub, when I chose Ubuntu I got message saying I'm running on low graphics mode and when I pressed ok the screen turned off. I couldn't do anything so I restarted and after reading this post: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I got into recovery, selected dpkg and repaired packages. Then I rebooted, and tried to press 'e' and change quiet splash to no splash and nomodeset but unfortunately both of them didn't work, and not the screen didn't get turned off, but I just saw a blank screen. So I rebooted again, entered the recovery, and this time I went to the root shell, and tried to install nvidia drivers from this guide here: http://www.howopensource.com/2012/10/install-nvidia-geforce-driver-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04-using-ppa/ I rebooted and got the same black screen again (the screen didn't go off, just saw a blank screen). In the grub I see that the kernel is 3.8.0-25. I also checked that the usb files are not corrupted using the check CD from the ubuntu installation screen. I'm really frustrated, I don't know what else can I do. (If someone also knows how can I connect to wifi using the root shell it will be very appreciated, because when I choose the 'enable networking' it again booting me to a black screen.   1) Downloaded 11.10 ISO file to Dell XP Workstation 2) Made bootable USB using Pendrivelinux 3) Installed to harddrive using option 1 (Install along side Windows) 4) Rebooted when instructed 5) Booted into Ubuntu just fine (first time) 6) Attempted restart - got first splash screen followed by "input not supported" - tapped ESC and eventually got into Ubuntu 7) Later attempts failed - got "input not supported"; no eventual boot 8) Many retries holding / tapping various keys - same result 9) Booted from USB - all files appear to be in place - can access GRUB on harddrive Suggestions appreciated - must to be able to boot XP. • How can I fix broken i915 drivers for Intel GPUs?

  I've got troubles getting the i915 drivers to work correctly on my laptop (HP Pavilion DM4 2101ea). Specifically, the laptop screen goes black and stays black after the splash graphic when booting both from USB key and from harddrive. To get anything on to the display after the splash screen I have to boot either with acpi=off nomodeset i915.modeset=0 I'd rather not turn ACPI off because I like my fans spinning and nomodeset is a bit overkill, so for now I'm booting with i915.modeset=0. Unfortunately, this turns off KMS and my current maximum resolution on the laptop screen is fixed to 1024x768 instead of its real capability. When not setting any of the above boot flags and I plug in an external monitor, the external monitor works fine. When booting with the flags, the external monitor works fine too, but can only do 1024x768 and can't do anything else than mirroring the laptop display. I did upgrade the i915 drivers from 2.17 that ship with Precise to 2.19 which are the most recent ones but without luck of getting anything to display.   I got this problem with brightness on my fresh xubuntu 13.10 install.. It ain't inc/decrease the screen brightness when pressing Fn+F5/F6 !!   on ubuntu 10.10 I used StartupManager to set windows 7 as the default boot, also chosen the 1024x768 resolution, 16 bit, time: 3sec, and checked "show splash screen". after the restart there was no GRUB menu at all, windows 7 booted, and in windows the clock was 0:03 instead of 10:03, also the wifi doesn't sees any connections anymore I reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 so the GRUB menu is back, changed the clock back from BIOS, but my wifi doesn't sees any connections in windows nor in ubuntu (I write this from another computer)

This mobile version will be released at a later date based on reaction to the initial web-based version. • Screen brightness dull after upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 I found that I could not increase screen brightness. I'm using a Samsung NC110 netbook. Initially the function key to modify brightness did not respond at all. After implementation of the first part of the fix, the key came alive and the brightness bar could be modified. Yet at maximum brightness indicated the screen still remained very dull. The 2nd part of the fix cures that problem, at least for this type of machine. First part of the fix was copied and modified in line with my experience from following post: How to control Brightness Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). Then type sudo nano /etc/default/grub. It will ask for your password. Type it in. Around the 11th line, there will be something like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash". Change it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" Save the file by Ctrl+O followed by Ctrl+X. Then run sudo update-grub in the terminal. Reboot and see if backlight adjustment works. Then I needed to modify the rc.local file. Therefore read below fix to understand the procedure: problem with adjusting brightness Ubuntu 14.04 In my case I had 2 folders listed under /sys/class/backlight which were: intel_backlight samsung I realized that the samsung folder is governing. I had to modify the check for max brightness to: cat /sys/class/backlight/samsung/max_brightness In my case the max value obtained is 8. Besides putting this into rc.local, I also had to uncomment the first line to get this working. My rc.local under /etc/ now looks as follows: !/bin/sh -e # # rc.local # # This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel. # Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other # value on error. # # In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution # bits. # # By default this script does nothing. echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/samsung/brightness exit 0 Now I can modify brightness on my netbook and also can get the screen up to its maximum brightness. • Unable to boot into 11.10 in normal (get a black screen) OR recovery (get just a flashing cursor, no cli)

  Okay, so I had a dual boot of Tango Studio (based on Ubuntu 10.04) and Windows XP. Yesterday I downloaded the .iso for Ubuntu 11.10 and attempted to install from a USB (my BIOS won't normally boot from USB but I had PLOP boot manager on a CD). I booted up Ubuntu from the USB and then from there formatted the partition with Tango on and installed Ubuntu 11.10. On booting up I came into Grub rescue mode. So I booted up from the USB again and used boot-repair to reinstall Grub. After this I would see the normal Grub menu, but on choosing Ubuntu I would come to a black screen. On choosing recovery mode it would begin starting normally with no obvious errors but instead of coming to a cli I would just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor on the top left, not accepting any input. I have since reformatted and reinstalled from a CD rather than USB and had the exact same problem. I used boot-repair again and the result is the same. Output of the most recent boot-repair is at http://paste.ubuntu.com/869805/ I have also tried editing the ubuntu grub entry and replacing quiet with text nomodeset as I saw in an answer to another question. This got me a bit further - I saw the purple ubuntu loading screen but still came to a blank screen after that. Anyway, in most of the other questions in which that is brought up the user is still able to boot into recovery, while I am not. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, let me know if there's any more info I need to provide! EDIT FOR MORE INFO: I read something saying it's quiet splash that should be replaced with nomodeset. Earlier I had left splash in the line. So i tried it this way and it froze after displaying the following text: fsck from util-linux 2.19.1 mountall: Plymouth command failed mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth /dev/sda5:clean, 139359/1741488 files, 745830/6961125 blocks From a bit of googling it doesn't look like plymouth is essential, but I've checked and I do have the most current versions of mountall and plymouth installed so I don't know why there's a problem EDIT FOR MORE INFO AGAIN: I used dkpg --reconfigure plymouth cause I saw it mentioned in another forum and it still says plymouth command failed on boot

  Supposse there's a company where web sites/apps are designed to resemble desktop apps. They struggle to add: Splash screens Drop-down menus Tab-pages Pages that don't grow downward with content, context is inside scrollable area so page is of a fixed size, as if resembling the one-screen limitation of desktop apps. Modal windows, pop-ups, etc. Tree views Absolutely no access to content unless you login-first, even with non-sensitive content. After splash screen desapears, you are presented with a login screen. No links - just simulated buttons. Fixed page-size. Cannot open a linked in other tab Print button that prints directly ( not showing printable page so the user can't print via the browser's print command ) Progress bars for loading content even when the browser indicates it with its own animation Fonts and color amulate a desktop app made with Visual Basic, PowerBuilder etc. Every app seems almost as if were made in Visual Basic. They reject this elements: Breadcrumbs Good old underlined links Generated/dynamic navigation, usage-based suggestions Ability to open links in multiple tabs Pagination Printable pages Ability to produce a URL you can save or share that links to an item, like when you send someone the link to an especific StackExchange question. The only URL is the main one. Back button To achieve this, tons of javascript code is needed. Lots and lots of Javascript and Ajax code for things not related with the business but with the necessity to hide/show that button, refresh this listbox, grey-out that label, etc. The coplexity generated by forcing one paradigm into another means most lines of code are dedicated to maintain the illusion of a desktop app. What is the best way to change this mindset, and make them embrace the web, and start producing modern, web apps instead of desktop imitations ? EDIT: These sites are intranet sites. Users hate these apps. They constantly whine about them, but they have to use them to do their daily work. These sites are in-house solutions, the end-users have no choice but to use them. They are a "captive audience". Also, substitution will not happen because of high costs. But at least if that mindset is changed, new developments would be more web-like.

• Vista gets stuck in an endless loop while booting

  I put my laptop to sleep last night, and when I woke up this morning... it didn't. So I tried to reboot, and everything went fine until it got to the Vista splash screen, where it's supposed to display the logon. Here, it hits an endless loop: Display the cursor with the blue spinny thing that replaced the hourglass, for 5-10 seconds Display "Please wait..." for about half a second Screen flashes to black, then quickly back to the Vista splash screen Goto step 1 The whole time, my hard LED is on almost non-stop. I can boot into Safe Mode... sometimes. Sometimes it'll load all the drivers, then sit there for about 10 minutes, spinning the hard drive non-stop, then reboot with no warning. I tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration. Didn't fix anything. When I've managed to get into Safe Mode, I tried running CHKDSK. Didn't fix anything. I tried running System Restore to each of my last two restore points. Didn't fix anything either time. I ran a virus scan. Didn't find anything. I tried calling the manufacturer (Alienware), only to discover that my warranty expired last freaking week and now I can't get it fixed without paying exorbitant sums of money. I'm about at my wits' end here. Has anyone seen this problem before? Does anyone know how to fix it? Does anyone know a solution that does not involve reinstalling the OS and losing an entire year's worth of program installations, Windows Updates and configuring and tweaking things until it's working just like I want it to?

• Lenovo S10 Ideapad will not boot while original hard drive is installed, neither from hard drive or

  Hello, first time posting here so I'll try to be very clear. I have a Lenovo S10 Ideapad netbook which fails to boot to an OS. It shows the Lenovo splash screen and can get to the BIOS but it doesn't get to GRUB (was dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and Win 7, was working fine for months, ie this isn't a new dual boot gone bad). After the splash screen it displays a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. Power cycled to no avail. Here is what I have done trying to narrow the problem down: The machine will boot to Ubuntu using an install/live USB drive, but only if ANOTHER hard drive is installed or NO hard drive is installed. The boot order always lists USB first. Also, there is a 2 gb RAM upgrade but I think that's fine; the Ubuntu USB drive boots fine with it, and "free" sees the whole 2gb of memory. So it seems like the hard drive is bad. I was able to put the bad drive in a different laptop and mount it to recover files. I'm ready to replace the bad hard drive, but I would like to know if this situation makes any sense. If the hard drive is bad, shouldn't I still be able to boot with the Ubuntu USB drive while the bad drive is installed? I would have expected the machine to boot into Ubuntu anyway even if with a bad drive, since the boot order lists USB first. But it seems that when the bad drive is installed, the machine ignores the USB drive and hangs with the flashing cursor. Thanks for any ideas! Sorry for the long post, I just want to put all the info I have up front! Basically I'm going to buy a new drive, but I am mostly curious if this is a typical or at least not unusual situation.

• Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

  I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

When I double-click a .wlog file, it opens up my application. However, it doesn't open the correct file. I read somewhere that JNLP was supposed to pass parameters to the main method indicating which file caused the app to be launched, but this is not happening (on OS X 10.6). I get an empty array to my application's main method. Probably unrelated, my splash screen doesn't work :( Any pointers on getting this working?

• Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 14 grub conflict

  I tried to triple boot Windows xp, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.04. I first installed Windows xp, then fedora followed by Ubuntu. The problem is that i don't get option to boot Ubuntu while Xp boots fine. It seems Ubuntu was unable to replace Fedora's grub with its own at MBR. Looking at their grub conf file, Fedora and Ubuntu identifies same harddisk as two different devices and i do have another 80 GB harddisk which doesn't have any OS.
