• How can I restore my laptop from Windows 7 to its original Windows Vista recovery partition?

  I bought my Acer laptop 4 years ago with Vista Home Premium x86. It has a recovery partition that I have used successfully in the past to format everything and reinstall Windows to factory settings. I have since upgraded to Windows 7, but I now need to get back to my original installation. Not sure what it's called, but I can successfully get into this recovery thingy: However, when I click the third option (for me I think it says 'Windows Image Recovery' or something like that) it tells me that it can't find any images to recover from :( I have checked and I don't have a windows.old that I can recover from either. One final note, if I launch diskmgmt.msc, these are the partitions: Why is the first partition shaded? Does that mean anything? Both of the 'unlettered' partitions are 100% empty. Did the Windows 7 upgrade process format my Vista system recovery partition?! And finally: How can I get back to my factory settings? EDIT: I did see this question, but neither of the answers apply to my situation. Edit to address jdh's answer: From what I can tell, I never get the option to boot the Vista recovery partition. After hitting F10, I get this screen, except it's partition 2, and I don't have the IN/MINT bit: I hit Escape, and then I get this screen, except without Ubuntu listed, and without the auto-countdown thing: I hit F8, and then I get this screen: I hit Enter on the first option, I end up at the screen in the first screen shot. As I said, from there I click the third option, and it fails to find the image, which I guess makes sense if it's only looking for a Windows 7 recovery. So I either need to make the Windows 7 tool see the Vista recovery partition, or I need the boot loader (?) to let me select Vista earlier in the process. Any ideas?

  Is the root directory where all files are kept (directly from accessing from FTP) always "www" or "public_html" depending on what OS? Or is it possible to rename this folder? And if so, what would be unique about this folder to be able to identify it? i.e. currently I just wrote this; my $root; my $ftp = Net::FTP->new($DB_ftpserver, Debug => 0) or die "Cannot connect to some.host.name: $@"; $ftp->login($DB_ftpuser, $DB_ftppass) or die "Cannot login ", $ftp->message; my @list = $ftp->dir; if( scalar @list != 0 ) { foreach( @list ){ if( $_ =~ m/www$/g ){ $root = "www"; last; }elsif( $_ =~ m/public_html$/g ){ $root = "public_html"; last; } } } but would not work if it has a different name.   I need to periodically give temporary and limited access to various directories on a CentOS linux server that has vsftp installed. I've created a user using useradd [user_name] and given them a password using passwd [password]. I've created a directory in /var/ftp and then I bind this to the directory that I wish to limit access to. What else do I need to specifically do to ensure that when this user logs into FTP, they only have access to this directory please?

• I want to dual boot Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro that doesn't already have Windows. Do I have to buy Windows twice?

  My girlfriend just bought a Macbook Pro, and she wants to to dual boot OSX with Windows. Specifically, she would like to use Windows 8. What I already know is the following: Windows 8 discs are only meant for upgrading from previous versions of Windows Windows 8 discs can be used to do a clean install, but (officially) only if there's already a legit version of Windows on the hard disk I've read somewhere of a disc being used to install Windows 8 on a fresh, out-of-the-box hard drive, and it all went well until the activation phase, where it said that the disc could only be used for upgrades The logical conclusion would be that in my circumstance, the only option is to buy a full (non-upgrade) retail copy of Windows 7, install that using boot camp, then load up Windows 7, insert the Windows 8 upgrade disc and do the 7-8 upgrade. However, I've read quite a few blog posts of people installing Windows 8 using bootcamp (e.g., Ars Technica, which leads me to believe that it might be possible to do so without installing Win7 first. The problem is that I'm not sure if these people were using preview versions, which obviously won't have the license issues down the track. Can anyone provide a definitive answer as to how to put Win8 on a Mac?

• Games on windows 8 in bootcamp lag even on lowest graphics

  I've been playing Crysis 2 and Skyrim on my Retina MacBookPro (10,1) for months now. The two games used to run super smoothly even on nearly maxed out settings. This laptop has an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card inside, it runs great. But I recently replaced my Windows 8 consumer preview with the retail copy, and since then, 3D games lag in this odd way, no matter what the graphics settings. Every second Skyrim and Crysis alternates between running smoothly and lagging. It's a cyclical lag that comes and goes like clockwork. I can turn the graphics down to 800x600 with no antialiasing and low texture quality, and it runs much smoother on the "up" motion of the cycle, but every second it moves back into this lag spike. I've tried installing beta graphics drivers, re installing the operating system, re installing the bootcamp support software, and freeing up space (I have about 20 GB free). I can't figure out what suddenly caused this other than some obscure difference between the consumer preview and the retail version. What can I try? Is my video card failing? Are there some other drivers I can install? This isn't normal lag from maxing out the card, it

• UISplitViewController programmtically without nib/xib, thank you.

  Hi, I usually create my projects without IB-stuff. The first thing I do is to strip off all references to xibs, outlets updated plist, etc and so forth. No problems, works great (in my world)! Now, I just installed 3.2 and tried to develop my first iPad app. Following same procedure as before, I created a UISplitView-based application project and stripped off all IB-stuff. Also, I followed the section in Apple's reference docs: "Creating a Split View Controller Programmatically", http://bit.ly/axgYAs, but nevertheless, the Master-view is never shown, only the Detail-view is (no matter what the orientation is). I really have tried to carefully look this through but I cannot understand what I have missed. Is there a working example of a UISplitViewController without the nibs floating around somewhere? I have googled but could not find any. Or do you know what I probably have missed? Regards, /Steve PS. Spare me the lesson why I should use the IB ;-) DS.

• ASP.NET Membership - Retrieve Password and PasswordSalt from Membership Table - Hash UserID

  Hello, I am so close to get this project done. I need to retrieve the password and passwordSalt from my Membership table to compare it to my 'OldPasswords' table. The problem is the Membership provider does not let me use the GetPassword method because the password is hashed. And I can not retrieve it in a normal sqlConnection because the UserID is hashed also. Does anyone know how to hash the UserID so I can put it in my where clause? Or maybe there is a different way to get to that data? Any help is appreciated. Thank you, Steve

  Hello, I'm working on an internal IT application monitoring outages for a network with a national footprint in the US. I'm considering overlaying outages by region on a map. Showing outage areas in red for example. The user clicks on the outage area displaying drill down information. The technology stack includes Grails/JBoss/Linux. Are there frameworks that provide the mapping/GIS layer of the display on which I could overly my domain specific information? I've looked into the Google Map API, but am unable to leverage it as this operates behind a firewall. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Steve

  Hi I've embedded several views in a library so that I can re-use across projects using this method which works OK: http://www.wynia.org/wordpress/2008/12/aspnet-mvc-plugins/ But one view usings a Javascript file. I've tried marking this as an embedded resource and adding it AssemblyInfo.cs and then referencing this resource using <%= ClientScript.GetWebResourceUrl(this.GetType(), "FullPath.FileName.js")%> This is literally displaying this output in the view WebResource.axd?d=nUxqfqAUQLabLU54W I think this is because Im trying to refer to an embedded resource from an embedded resource. Help appreciated as Im going round in circles.. Steve

• Problem Installing Application on iPhone: Resource has been modified

  Hi, I am working on a simple iPhone application and when I run my app on my machine it installs on the device, but when I try it on a Windows machine using an ad-hoc distribution profile, it shows an error: "Application couldn't be installed because a resource has been modified." I have 2 iPhones and have tested the same app; on iPhone 2G it works fine, but on the 3G it shows the error I have written above. I tried to change the certificate and provisioning profiles, but no luck. Please let me know where I am mistaken. Thanks. Steve

• how to parse jquery ajax xhtml response?

  Sorry if this has been posted many times. But I've tried many variations and it still doesn't work. The HTML comes back from the jquery AJAX call fine and I am trying to remove the header and footers from the response using: // none of these work for me $("#content", data); $("#content", $(data)); $(data).find("#content").html() I've breakpoint the response to verify the #content exists by inspected $(data) and using alert to print out the data's text. I've also try using "body" or "a" as selectors, but it always come back as undefined. I've read in this post that you can't pull in the full XHTML document: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1050333/jquery-ajax-parse-response-text. But I can't find the answer's quote anymore, maybe it's outdated? Has anyone ran into this problem? Many thanks, Steve

• Is there a JS diff library against htmlstring just like google-diff-match-patch on plain text?

  Currently I am using google-diff-match-patch to implement a real-time editing tool, which can synchronize texts between multiple users. Everything works great when operations are only plain texts, each user's operation(add/delete texts) could be diff-ed out by comparing to old text snapshot with the helper of google-diff. But when rich format texts(like bold/italic) are involved, google-diff not working well when comparing the htmlstring. The occurrence of character of < and > messed up the diff results, especially when bold/italic format are embedded within each other. Could anyone suggest a similar library like google-diff to diff htmlstrings? Or any suggestions can get my problem fixed with google-diff? I understood google-diff is designed for plain text, but really didn't find a better library than it so far, so it also works if a doable enhancement to google-diff can help. Thanks for any comments.   Hello, I have a site at blog.foobar.com that I have closed down, and I want any page requested there to be forwarded to www.foobar.com I want my VirtualHost config to do this for me. I currently have the following lines that does nearly what I want but not exactly: redirect permanent / http://www.foobar.com Unfortunately what happens is that if I ask for blog.foobar.com instead of forwarding to www.foobar.com it serves the pages on blog.foobar.com instead. Is there a way doing this in the VirtualHost config or should I use a .htaccess file instead? Regards Steve

• silverlight 3 navigation page not availble in VS as item to add

  I've recently upgraded my computer from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've re-installed VS 2008 web express, and re-installed all the silver light sdk's, tools, etc. But now when I want to add a Silverlight Navigation Page, it is not avialble to me in the list of items that can be added. The navigation dll is installed, as my project existed before the OS upgrade. The program still runs just fine as is, but I want to add another navigation page item to the project, and I'm stumped for how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• Safari Back button not honouring PHP logout session

  I've got a logout.php page which ends a user's session and works well and does the following: session_start(); session_unset(); session_destroy(); I've just noticed when testing with Safari that when you logout you can click the back button to return to the previous page which requires authentication but are not prompted. You cannot navigate away from this page without entering the navigation but it should not be displaying the previous page in the first place. So far in my testing this is only an issue with Safari on Mac OS X and there are a number of other reports about this but with no resolution that I could find: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Web_Languages-Standards/PHP/Q_23702691.html I would love to be able to disable this behaviour with Safari's back button - surprised that this is happening in the first place.   Hi there, I've had this problem bending my mind for a while now (head cold doesn't help either!), basically I have a PHP array which looks like this example: $array[0][0] = 'apples'; $array[0][1] = 'pears'; $array[0][2] = 'oranges'; $array[1][0] = 'steve'; $array[1][1] = 'bob'; And I would like to be able to produce from this a table with every possible combination of these, but without repeating any combinations (regardless of their position), so for example this would output Array 0 Array 1 apples steve apples bob pears steve pears bob But I would like for this to be able to work with as many different arrays as possible.   I'm trying to setup a Git server on Windows 7, using CopSsh, PuTTY and msysgit. I'm having problems cloning a repository using ssh. If I use a regular directory path, it works: $ git clone ~/vc/git/depot/test.git/ /c/dev/es/app Initialized empty Git repository in c:/dev/es/app/.git/ warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository. Ssh, doesn't work. • Lazy loading in Hibernate

  My Java Web application uses Hibernate to perform ORM. In some of my objects, I use lazy loading to avoid getting data until I absolutely need it. The problem is that I load the initial object in a session, and then that session is destroyed. When I later attempt to resolve the lazy-loaded collections in my object I get the following error: org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException: failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: common.model.impl.User.groups, no session or session was closed I tried associating a new session with the collection and then resolving, but this gives the same results. Does anyone know how I can resolve the lazy collections once the original session is gone? Thanks... --Steve

  Hello, Environment: Windows XP, SpringSource Tool Suite 2.3.2, Roo 1.0.2.Release, Java 1.6.0_10, tc Server 6.0 I'm using the canned Roo generated code. I created an entity and associated controller. Then deleted both classes. The problem I'm seeing is the Roo created home page still shows the "Create/List" section for the deleted classes. • SVN Mac oSX issue - permissions?

  Hello there, /Volumes/sites is a connection to a samba share that hosts some of our sites. We authorise using a username & password that is the same user/pass to log onto the mac. When committing, (or even doing a cleanup) from the Mac Client side using the svn command line tool or SCPlugin, this error occurs: Commit succeeded, but other errors follow: Error bumping revisions post-commit (details follow): In directory '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error processing command 'committed' in '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error replacing text-base of 'index.php' Can't move '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/tmp/text-base/index.php.svn-base' to '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/text-base/index.php.svn-base': Operation not permitted Any ideas? I think it's to do with permissions on the mac side not being able to move files around on the samba share. Apologies if my question is kinda vague so any extra information I can give please shout. • Android Market Publishing Issues

  I have an app which I have just updated to froyo to take advantage of the move to SD card feature. I am now trying to upload the update to the market but I keep getting the following error: "The file is invalid: W/ResourceType( 7193): Bad string block: last string is not 0- terminated ERROR getting 'android:label' attribute: attribute is not a string value". I changed the value in the manifest from "android:label="@string/app_name" " to "android:label="test" " and uploaded it, then it started complaining about the icon, saying that it wasn't a string. Anyone have any ideas? The application part of my manifest is shown below and I'm properly confused. The app compiles into an APK, it even installs and runs fine on my N1 (installing from SD card) it just won't upload to the market. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have absolutely no idea what's wrong, seems like I've tried everything I can think of including re-installing eclipse. Cheers Steve

  Hi, Hope someone may be able to help. What i am looking to do is create a small winform app in c# to read the content of a email from a pop account, and upload key values to a sql automatically. The email format is always the same for each email, eg, First name : Last name : Phone number : etc... Currently the emails are being stored in a pop 3 account however i want a way to reduce having to key the information into the sql by hand.   Hi, I am trying to write a base crud controller class that does the following: class BaseCrudController: model = "" field_validation = {} template_dir = "" @expose(self.template_dir) def new(self, *args, **kwargs) .... @validate(self.field_validation, error_handler=new) @expose() def post(self, *args, **kwargs): ... My intent is to have my controllers extend this base class, set the model, field_validation, and template locations, and am ready to go. Unfortunately, decorators (to my understanding), are interpreted when the function is defined. Hence it won't have access to instance's value. Is there a way to pass in dynamic data or values from the sub class? If not, I guess I could use override_template as a workaround to expose and set the template within the controller action. How would I go about validating the form within the controller action? Thanks, Steve
