  Hi everyone, I have a one-to-many relationship between Part and Params (a "Part" has many "Params). I'm trying to do something naive like this: Part sourcePart = em.find(Part.class, partIdSource); Part destPart = em.find(Part.class, partIdDest); Collection<Param> paramListSource = sourcePart.getParamList(); destPart.setParamList(paramListSource); Basically I want to copy all the parameters from sourcePart to destPart. Hopefully the persistence provider will automatically set the right foreign keys in the Param table/entity. The above code will obviously not work. Is there any easy way of doing this, or do I have to do create a new collection, then add each Param (creating new Param, setting attributes, etc) ?

• what is a fast way to output h5py dataset to text?

  I am using the h5py python package to read files in HDF5 format. (e.g. somefile.h5) I would like to write the contents of a dataset to a text file. For example, I would like to create a text file with the following contents: 1,20,31,75,142,324,78,12,3,90,8,21,1 I am able to access the dataset in python using this code: import h5py f = h5py.File('/Users/Me/Desktop/thefile.h5', 'r') group = f['/level1/level2/level3'] dset = group['dsetname'] My naive approach is too slow, because my dataset has over 20000 entries: # write all values to file for index in range(len(dset)): # do not add comma after last value if index == len(dset)-1: txtfile.write(repr(dset[index])) else: txtfile.write(repr(dset[index])+',') txtfile.close() return None Is there a faster way to write this to a file? Perhaps I could convert the dataset into a NumPy array or even a Python list, and then use some file-writing tool? (I could experiment with concatenating the values into a larger string before writing to file, but I'm hoping there's something entirely more elegant)

But I wanted to know are there problems with it and when should we should not do it? I really can't think of a case right now where you would not want to do an cascade delete but I am sure there is one...but what about updates should they be done always? • 'is instanceof' Interface bad design

  Say I have a class A class A { Z source; } Now, the context tells me that 'Z' can be an instance of different classes (say, B and C) which doesn't share any common class in their inheritance tree. I guess the naive approach is to make 'Z' an Interface class, and make classes B and C implement it. But something still doesn't convince me because every time an instance of class A is used, I need to know the type of 'source'. So all finishes in multiple 'ifs' making 'is instanceof' which doesn't sound quite nice. Maybe in the future some other class implements Z, and having hardcoded 'ifs' of this type definitely could break something. The escence of the problem is that I cannot resolve the issue by adding functions to Z, because the work done in each instance type of Z is different. I hope someone can give me and advice, maybe about some useful design pattern. Thanks

  Hello ! I am new to Ruby on Rails and I have a (maybe naive) question: I want to implement reflection of direct SQL Updates of the underlying database in an ActiveRecord (and finally in the generated html). By "direct updates" I mean updating the database bypassing the ActiveRecord methods, for example by MySQL console. I guess here MySQL triggers could be used that would call some stored procedure that would cause the appropriate ActiveRecord to be reloaded. Is there some automatic handling of this scenario in ActiveRecord/Ruby on Rails ? Did somebody implement this scenario ? Can somebody recommend using other MVC frameworks to reflect direct changes in mapped databases ?

• g:countrySelect with full country name as value

  I want to store the exact country name using g:countrySelect. Example Germany instead of DEU. It is the value in the drop down menu. The drop down text is Germany but when it saves it to the database it changes back to the country code. Sorry if I am somewhat naive but I have been searching for almost 3 hours for solutions and it isn't well documented at the grails website. I could opt for any alternative even ajax. Just to have an easy way to display a list of countries and will be able to store the REAL NAME of the country NOT country code. Thank you!

• Python: How to get a value of datetime.today() that is "timezone aware"?

  Hi, I am trying to subtract one date value from the value of datetime.today() to calculate how long ago something was. But it complains: TypeError: can't subtract offset-naive and offset-aware datetimes The value datetime.today() doesn't seem to be "timezone aware", while my other date value is. How do I get a value of datetime.today() that is timezone aware? Right now it's giving me the time in local time, which happens to be PST, i.e. UTC-8hrs. Worst case, is there a way I can manually enter a timezone value into the datetime object returned by datetime.today() and set it to UTC-8? Of course, the ideal solution would be for it to automatically know the timezone. Thanks!

• Best way to handle enable/disable of UIButtons on iPhone

  I have an increase button and a decrease button, both of which affect a variable. The variable has a minimum and the decrease button will be disabled once that minimum is reached. Likewise for the maximum value of the variable. In my controller, I have two IBActions for both the increase and decrease actions, and two IBOutlets, in order to disable the buttons accordingly. At the bottom of my KVO statement to handle the value change, I have: increaseButton.enabled = value != MAX; decreaseButton.enabled = value != MIN; While this code is functional, I can't help but feel that feel this is a naive approach to the problem, especially since this requires 4 connections. Is there a better solution to this, one that uses fewer connections?

  Hi there, I am looking for an alternative to using an object/variable in global scope -- I would like to associate key/value pairs with specific DOM elements (eg, a DIV), so that I can use them as input for logic that processes other elements (eg, child elements of said DIV). I tried something naive like: $('[foo=bar]').key='value' , and $('[foo=bar]')[key]='value', but it puked. Doing something like: var foobar = $('[foo=bar]'); foobar.key = 'value' -- works, but the new property/value only affects the new object (ie, foobar, not $('[foo=bar]')) Most likely there's something terribly basic I am overlooking. They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native!   Hi all, I'm currently in the middle of writing a game like Breakout, and I was wondering how I could properly bounce a ball off a surface. I went with the naive way of rotating the velocity by 180 degrees, which was: [vx, vy] -> [-vy, vx] Which (unsurprisingly) didn't work so well. If I know the position and veocity of the ball, as well as the point the ball would hit (but is going to instead bounce off of) how can I bounce it off that point? I don't need any language specific code. If anyone could provide a small, mathematical formula on how to properly do this that would work fine for me. I also need this to work with integer positions and velocity (I can't use floating point anywhere). Thanks!

• Does an HTTPS SharePoint Site Need to Use HTTPS-Compliant Web Parts?

  I am new to SharePoint, so this question may be a little naive. However, I sincerely appreciate any help with this. We are planning to create a new sub-site within our company's intranet site, which is built on SharePoint 2007. We want to add a 3rd-party weather web part (which is just a widget to display the local weather forecast) to the home page of the new intranet site. Since the intranet site uses HTTPS, do we need to find an HTTPS-compliant web part? Or, is it possible to use any web part and then configure it to use HTTPS? I'm assuming that if we use a non-HTTPS web part, then users will get some sort of "This page contains both secure and non-secure items" error message when they load the page.

  I recently took on a project to build a webpage. I am an experienced developer but never worked with coding a psd file into a webpage. Now, the psd file uses a specific font, which I do not have probably, as I can see it in grey and [ ] at the bottom of the fonts list. Sorry for the naive question, but what am I supposed to do from the client's point of view? Should I have that font? Should I buy it? Can I extract it from the psd file? • Write a serverside c++/openGL App, that is accessible via JavaScript

  Hi, I am currently having an idea where I want to save an image from a c++/openGL application on demand from a browser. So basically I would like to run the application itself on the server and have a simple communication layer like this: JS - tell application to do calculations (and maybe pass a string or some simple data) application - tell JS when finished and maybe send a link, text or something as simple as that. I don't really have alot of experience with webservers and as such don't know if that is possible at all (it's just my naive thinking). And note: I am not talking about a webGL application, I just want to have simple communication between a c++ serverside application, and the user. Any ideas how to do that? Thanks alot!

  This is a bit of a naive / simple question. I'm having a hard time finding this info online. Basically, does rspec run rake db:test:prepare between every rspec group? Or is it between every example or model? Or does the schema get loaded once and then truncated between each. I need to add a rake task directly after this call to create a view since they are not supported in schema.rb. Either a link or explanation would be greatly appreciated so that I know where to insert my rake task to create a view. Or whether there is a callback like rake db:test:after_prepare thx

  Base on the documentation and sample code that I have gone through, I got an impression that when a class defined in xcode is read into and configured in Interface Builder, an object based on the class is effectively created and stored in an xib or nib file. So the object is ready to be used when the corresponding application is launched. Alternatively, for classes that have not been handled by Interface Builder, code such as the "new" statements have to be written in xcode explicitly in order for the associated objects to be created and used. When a.bid or a.cid is NULL, I want to get every row where the other column matches, e.g. if a.bid is NULL, I want every row where a.cid=b.cid, if both are NULL I want every column from b. My naive solution was this: SELECT DISTINCT b.* FROM b JOIN a ON ( ISNULL(a.bid) OR a.bid=b.bid ) AND (ISNULL(a.cid) OR a.cid=b.cid ) Is there any better way to to this?

• Design report of 4-D data set

  I'm writing a report generator that will present data each being generated from 4 parameters. Time interval Group Measurement value(one of several to choose from) Device All these are orthogonal giving me a 4-D dataset to present. There are some simplifications where one parameter is the same for all and other parameters are merged. Still it appears as there are situations where all values are wanted on the report. In short the report should both be simple to overview and contain details. There will also be an interface where the user setup the range and granularity for each parameter. The most naive solution would be to have a 2D table where each cell contain another table with values of the remaining two dimensions. This is technically feasible but I'm worried that it would become hard to overview. Another approach is to present first two dimensions in a 2D table and the remaining parameters in groups Are there any good method to address this kind of issue?
