  • ERP/CRM Systems. Desktop Based ? Web based? [closed]

    I have seen 2-3 ERPs in action. I am wondering what is better. Desktop based application or webbased displayed on a browser. My first experience was with a web based ERP when i was 14 years old.. It was web based and terribly slow... For most simple task you had to do lots of clicks... no keyboard support ..... Pages took ages to load. Last year I worked for migrating to a newer computer some old terminal based cobol application. The computer that worked till today and still has no problem was from 1993. The user interface ofcourse was textbased.. The speed that guys placed orders was amazing! just typing the name of the customer , then 5-10 keys to add a product to order.... Comparing to this ERP the page for placing orders Link (click sales orders) seems terribly slow to add a product... No keyboard shortcut works to save what you added and generally I believe you need 4 times more time to place an order compared to the text interface... Having to use both mouse and keyboard for this task is BAD and sadistic... So how can the heck these people ever use a system like that ??? So in the long run desktop application seems the only way... Of course browsers support shortcuts but the way to overide the defaults that browsers uses isn't cross compatible... That is a huge problem. Finnaly, if we MUST/forced use cloud in near future what about keyboard shortcuts?? I feel confused... I have seen converters of desktop applications to browser applications but are SLOW as hell... The question is what about user friendliness? What kind of application would you use?

  • Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

    The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons.   • How do I turn off PCI devices?

    With the purchase of an Intel SSD and 85WHr Li-ion battery and the linking of wifi and bluetooth to my laptop's wireless switch, extensive Intel PowerTop usage, switching from compiz to metacity, stopping of the desktop-couch daemon, removal of Ubuntu One and several other services from my startup, disabling of everything possible in my BIOS, and physical removal of my optical drive, I've gotten my battery life up fairly high, but I think there's still more to be done. Specifically, when I'm in class taking notes, I want to temporarily but completely power down: Ethernet Firewire USB ports SD card reader Optical drive Webcam Sound card PCMCIA slot ..without turning them off in my BIOS like they are now, if possible, because then I have to restart my computer to use any of them. As it stands, I still haven't managed to power down: Firewire USB connection to webcam sound card How do I tell Linux to disable and power down these devices? Is it true that any PCI slot can be physically powered down? My current idle power consumption is 7.9 watts plus the screen. (10.0W at min. brightness) Also, how do I set the screen timeout to ten seconds? gconf editor isn't honoring it when I set it to that. Will switching from nVidia to Nouveau save any significant amount of power?

  • Unable to turn on seamless mode in VirtualBox

    I'm not able to switch to Seamless Mode in VirtualBox with Ubuntu 10.04 or 9.10 as guest OS's. I have tried the seamless mode with XP as guest OS, and it works absolutely fine. The host OS is Windows 7. I have in-built Via/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP graphics, and I have allocated 30 MB out of 64 MB of graphics memory. I've also 1.5 GB of RAM. I also tried installing Guest Additions but it still didn't work. VirtualBox version is 4.0.4r70112. How can I get the seamless mode to work? Please help!

  • Predictive firing (in a tile-based game)

    I have a (turn-based) tile-based game, in which you can shoot at entities. You can move around with mouse and keyboard, it's all tile-based, except that bullets move "freely". I've got it all working just fine except that when I move, and the creatures shoot towards the player, they shoot towards the previous tiles.. resulting in ugly looking "miss hits" or lag. I think I need to implement some kind of predictive firing based on the bullet speed and the distance, but I don't quite know how to implement such a thing... Here's a simplified snip of my firing code. class Weapon { public void fire(int x, int y) { ... ... ... Creature owner = getOwner(); Tile targetTile = Zone.getTileAt(x, y); float dist = Vector.distance(owner.getCenterPosition(), targetTile.getCenterPosition()); Bullet b = new Bullet(); b.setPosition(owner.getCenterPosition()); // Take dist into account in the duration to get constant speed regardless of distance float duration = dist / 600f; // Moves the bullet to the centre of the target tile in the given amount of time (in seconds) b.moveTo(targetTile.getCenterPosition(), duration); // This is what I'm after // Vector v = predict the position // b.moveTo(v, duration); Zone.add(bullet); // Now the bullet gets "ticked" and moveTo will be implemented } } Movement of creatures is as simple as setting the position variable.     If I have two forms: class ContactForm(forms.Form): name = forms.CharField() message = forms.CharField(widget=forms.Textarea) class SocialForm(forms.Form): name = forms.CharField() message = forms.CharField(widget=forms.Textarea) and wanted to use a class based view, and send both forms to the template, is that even possible? class TestView(FormView): template_name = 'contact.html' form_class = ContactForm It seems the FormView can only accept one form at a time. In function based view though I can easily send two forms to my template and retrieve the content of both within the request.POST back. variables = {'contact_form':contact_form, 'social_form':social_form } return render(request, 'discussion.html', variables) Is this a limitation of using class based view (generic views)?   • Enable Claims based Auth on a SP2010 website, after it has been provisioned

    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). When you provision a web app in SP2010, you can choose it to use Claims Based Auth or Classic Auth right through the GUI.  However, after you have provisioned a web app, there is no GUI to switch from Classic to Claims based. So the below powershell script will let you convert a SP2010 website to claims based auth after it has been provisioned. 1: $w = Get-SPWebApplication "http://sp2010" 2: $w.UseClaimsAuthentication = "True"; 3: $w.Update() The user running the above script should be a member of the SharePoint_Shell_Access role on the config DB, and a member of the WSS_ADMIN_WPG local group.   • Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

    A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please.   • On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

    Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website! Does anyone know my best solution to progress to having this feature on my website, any tutorials or free to use, free to modify web plugins? Thank you for your help, Best Regards, Tim

    We are planning to build a Web Based School/College ERP. The main problem we face is Hardware support. Since it is Web Based, it is not possible to implement Biometrics. But most of our clients do ask for Biometrics. I hope we need to use a desktop application to do that. Can you please give some suggestions for this? Another thing is, here we don't have stable internet connection. We frequently face disconnection. This is another problem for Web Based CRM. In HTML5 there is a feature called Offline storage. Is it possible to use this feature for such dynamic ERP? For example, let's say we need to enter marks for the students. Net got disconnected. Is it possible to use HTML5 offline feature to save the marks offline and upload them when we got connection back?
