  I connected TV to my computer, and trying to set dual display. Whatever resolution I choose for my second display (TV) I get message like this: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2704, 1050), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1680, 1680) How can I fix this? Also, while I was experimenting system went to deadlock, I restarted and after boot monitor just turns off once system is up. • iwlwifi on lenovo z570 disabled by hardware switch

  It was working fine with windows 7. The hardware switch is not disabled. I've toggled it back and forth dozens of times. The wifi light never turns on and it always lists as hardware disabled. I have the latest updates installed. I've been searching for solutions, but none of them seem to work for me. I've tried removing acer-wmi. I've tried setting 11n_disable=1. I've tried resetting the bios. I've tried using rfkill to unblock (only removes soft block). I've rebooted dozens of times. The wifi light turns off as soon as grub loads. Edit: I have a usb edimax wireless nic. It shows hardware disabled as well (although rfkill lists as unblocked). • Best way to remote restart Ubuntu from Windows machine

  Background: I'm looking to put a series of Ubuntu machines into retail locations, they're being used as dumb kiosks to show a series of slides onto large LCD panel TV screens. Once installed, they won't have a keyboard or mouse connected but will have a fixed IP on the local network. Everything is configured to auto-start, no automatic updates, no power saving etc - I think we're pretty-much good to go apart from one thing. I need the retail staff to be able to restart the boxes if a problem arises. We have VNC running (now that we've turned off desktop enhancements!) so that we can remotely get into the machines if we need to, but that's not something we would allow the retail staff to do. The machines are going to be physically 'out of the way' (probably in the ceiling space) so the power button is not easily accessible!. I'd like to have some means of allowing the retail staff to restart the Ubuntu machine, from the desktop of one of their Windows terminals. I don't really want to give them some kind of raw terminal access (the command line will frighten them!) and I don't want them to use VNC (as stated above). Ideally there would be an icon on the Windows desktop, they double-click it, reply to a simple 'are you sure?' prompt, and then the Ubuntu box is told to restart. The Windows side of that won't be a problem, we can write something using Delphi, Python & Qt4, whatever - it's the Ubuntu side of it I'm stuck with. Out of sight/view, could I have a Windows program open a terminal across the network and tell Ubuntu to restart? Is this what SSH could be used for (I have never set that kind of thing up). The Windows programming side isn't really an issue, it's just that I'm a total Ubuntu noob and don't know where to start from the platform point of view. The other thing we considered is also having the machine automatically restart itself at a set time each day (obviously out of store hours!). To me, that seems a bit unnecessary (though forcing a restart once a week/month might be worthwhile). Any thoughts or suggestions? Being able to restart the box on demand across the network is my prime requirement.

  Programming Windows Identity Foundation by Vittorio Bertocci is right now the only serious book about Windows Identity Foundation available. I started using Windows Identity Foundation when I made my first experiments on Windows Azure AppFabric Access Control Service. I wanted to generalize the way how people authenticate theirselves to my systems and AppFabric ACS seemed to me like good point where to start. My first steps trying to get things work opened the door to whole new authentication world for me. As I went through different blog postings and articles to get more information I discovered that the thing I am trying to use is the one I am looking for. As best security API for .NET was found I wanted to know more about it and this is how I found Programming Windows Identity Foundation. What’s inside? Programming WIF focuses on architecture, design and implementation of WIF. I think Vittorio is very good at teaching people because you find no too complex topics from the book. You learn more and more as you read and as a good thing you will find that you can also try out your new knowledge on WIF immediately. After giving good overview about WIF author moves on and introduces how to use WIF in ASP.NET applications. You will get complete picture how WIF integrates to ASP.NET request processing pipeline and how you can control the process by yourself. There are two chapters about ASP.NET. First one is more like introduction and the second one goes deeper and deeper until you have very good idea about how to use ASP.NET and WIF together, what issues you may face and how you can configure and extend WIF. Other two chapters cover using WIF with Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) band   Windows Azure. WCF chapter expects that you know WCF very well. This is not introductory chapter for beginners, this is heavy reading if you are not familiar with WCF. The chapter about Windows Azure describes how to use WIF in cloud applications. Last chapter talks about some future developments of WIF and describer some problems and their solutions. Most interesting part of this chapter is section about Silverlight. Who should read this book? Programming WIF is targeted to developers. It does not matter if you are beginner or old bullet-proof professional – every developer should be able to be read this book with no difficulties. I don’t recommend this book to administrators and project managers because they find almost nothing that is related to their work. I strongly recommend this book to all developers who are interested in modern authentication methods on Microsoft platform. • Designing An ACL Based Permission System

  I am trying to create a permissions system where everything is going to be stored in MySQL (or some database) and pulled using PHP for a project management system I am building.  I am right now trying to do it is an ACL kind of way.  There are a number key features I want to be able to support: 1.  Being able to assign permissions without being tied to a specific object. The reason for this is that I want to be able to selectively show/hide elements of the UI based on permissions at a point where I am not directly looking at a domain object instance.  For instance, a button to create a new project should only should only be shown to users that have the pm.project.create permission but obviously you can assign a create permission to an domain object instance (as it is already created). 2.  Not have to assign permissions for every single object. Obviously creating permissions entries for every single object (projects, tickets, comments, etc…) would become a nightmare to maintain so I want to have some level of permission inheritance. *3.  Be able to filter queries based on permissions. This would be a really nice to have but I am not sure if it is possible.  What I mean by this is say I have a page that list all projects.  I want the query that pulls all projects to incorporate the ACL so that it would not show projects that the current user does not have pm.project.read access to.  This would have to be incorporated into the main query as if it is a process that is done after that main query (which I know I could do) certain features like pagination become much more difficult. Right now this is my basic design for the tables: AclEntities id - the primary key key - the unique identifier for the domain object (usually the primary key of that object) parentId - the parent of the domain object (like the project object if this was a ticket object) aclDomainObjectId - metadata about the domain object AclDomainObjects id - primary key title - simple string to unique identify the domain object(ie. project, ticket, comment, etc…) fullyQualifiedClassName - the fully qualified class name for use in code (I am using namespaces) There would also be tables mapping AclEntities to Users and UserGroups. I also have this interface that all acl entity based object have to implement: IAclEntity getAclKey() - to the the unique key for this specific instance of the acl domain object (generally return the primary key or a concatenated string of a composite primary key) getAclTitle() - to get the unique title for the domain object (generally just returning a static string) getAclDisplayString() - get the string that represents this entity (generally one or more field on the object) getAclParentEntity() - get the parent acl entity object (or null if no parent) getAclEntity() - get the acl enitty object for this instance of the domain object (or null if one has not been created yet) hasPermission($permissionString, $user = null) - whether or not the user has the permission for this instance of the domain object static getFromAclEntityId($aclEntityId) - get a specific instance of the domain object from an acl entity id. Do any of these features I am looking for seems hard to support or are just way off base? Am I missing or not taking in account anything in my implementation? Is performance something I should keep in mind?

After a clean Modx install I've tried to access http://www.encepence.pl/manager and I've got a permission denied by my server. the thing is that I can easily access any other folder under that domain and modify this folder(manager) content via ftp.   I'm trying to setup a tomcat6 server, and I'm trying to match another setup someone else established. However, my deployment (default Ubuntu install) uses a policy.d/ directory structure, and the established server just uses a catalina.policy file. I've tried setting every entry in policy.d to match the given catalina.policy, but I still get the following stacktrace on boot (from localhost log). I have two questions, then. First, how do I get tomcat to use a single poilcy file, rather than the directory structure presented by policy.d/? Secondly, why, when I specify all files to use the same policy, do I still get the stack trace below? • Cannot update, apt-get cannot fetch index files

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 from the iso 'ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso'. I installed this in VMWare Fusion 4.1.1 running on OSX 10.7.3. When setting up the VM, I allowed easy install to take care of creating my user and installing VMWare tools. No problems during installation, everything seems to be working great. The problem is that apt-get will NOT update, so I can't do software updates or install any software with apt-get install. I have been searching high and low, and have found several threads covering similar issues. How to fix a ruined package catalog? is one, Update manager generates 404 error while attempting update. Will not update is another, Ubuntu 11.10 Update issue (failed to fetch...) is a third I have tried changing my software source download location to "Main Server" rather than "Server for United States", to no avail. Same errors. Tried sudo apt-get clean, sudo apt-get autoclean, Have done a sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*, still having the exact same problem. As I said, this is a brand new installation as of yesterday evening. • Access Your favorite RSS Feeds in Windows Media Center

  There are a lot of apps out there that help you organize and view your favorite RSS feeds. If you subscribe to a lot, sitting at a computer to view them all can be overwhelming. Today we take a look at accessing them from the couch with WMC. Using Media Center RSS Feeds To get RSS feeds to work with this plugin you need to subscribe to them through Internet Explorer.   The first thing you’ll need to do is activate Media Center RSS Reader (link below) on their site. Next install the Media Center RSS Reader plugin (link below). Installation is easy, just select the defaults when going through the wizard. Now when you open Media Center you’ll see the RSS icon in the main menu under Accessories. You can also find it in the Extras section. Enter in the username and activation code you received when you activated the plugin earlier. After activation you’ll see a list of the RSS feeds you currently subscribed through Internet Explorer. Click on the site feed you want to read and you’ll get a list of the different items available. Next you get and overview of the contents for the item you selected. From there you can show the page of the website containing that item. For any audio or video feeds you subscribe to, at the overview screen, click on Play to watch it. Then just sit back and watch your favorite video RSS feeds on WMC.   Media Center RSS Reader plugin will work with Vista and Windows 7. • SQL Server – SafePeak “Logon Trigger” Feature for Managing Data Access

  Lately I received an interesting question about the abilities of SafePeak for SQL Server acceleration software: Q: “I would like to use SafePeak to make my CRM application faster. It is an application we bought from some vendor, after a while it became slow and we can’t reprogram it. SafePeak automated caching sounds like an easy and good solution for us. But, in my application there are many servers and different other applications services that address its main database, and some even change data, and I feel that there is a chance that some servers that during the connection process we may miss some. Is there a way to ensure that SafePeak will be aware of all connections to the SQL Server, so its cache will remain intact?” Interesting question, as I remember that SafePeak (http://www.safepeak.com/Product/SafePeak-Overview) likes that all traffic to the database will go thru it. I decided to check out the features of SafePeak latest version (2.1) and seek for an answer there. A: Indeed I found SafePeak has a feature they call “Logon Trigger” and is designed for that purpose. It is located in the user interface, under: Settings -> SQL instances management  ->  [your instance]  ->  [Logon Trigger] tab. From here you activate / deactivate it and control a white-list of enabled server IPs and Login names that SafePeak will ignore them. Click to Enlarge After activation of the “logon trigger” Safepeak server is notified by the SQL Server itself on each new opened connection. Safepeak monitors those connections and decides if there is something to do with them or not. On a typical installation SafePeak likes all application and users connections to go via SafePeak – this way it knows about data and schema updates immediately (real time). With activation of the safepeak “logon trigger”  a special CLR trigger is deployed on the SQL server and notifies Safepeak on any connection that has not arrived via SafePeak. In such cases Safepeak can act to clear and lock the cache or to ignore it. This feature enables to make sure SafePeak will be aware of all connections so SafePeak cache will maintain exactly correct all times. So even if a user, like a DBA will connect to the SQL Server not via SafePeak, SafePeak will know about it and take actions. The notification does not impact the work of that connection, the user or application still continue to do whatever they planned to do. Note: I found that activation of logon trigger in SafePeak requires that SafePeak SQL login will have the next permissions: 1) CONTROL SERVER; 2) VIEW SERVER STATE; 3) And the SQL Server instance is CLR enabled; Seeing SafePeak in action, I can say SafePeak brings fantastic resource for those who seek to get performance for SQL Server critical apps. SafePeak promises to accelerate SQL Server applications in just several hours of installation, automatic learning and some optimization configuration (no code changes!!!). If better application and database performance means better business to you – I suggest you to download and try SafePeak. The solution of SafePeak is indeed unique, and the questions I receive are very interesting.   Background: My intention was to load a Virtual Machine (VM) on my Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My Mac had just enough room for a VM (my thought process was that VM was the same as partition) However, I burned the newest version of Ubuntu onto a CD, thinking that partitioning and running a virtual machine would be the same. I would restart my computer, booting up Ubuntu installer. The installation would not allow me to partition, forcing me to force shutdown my laptop. when I turn on my laptop, I see that my computer is "missing operating system". So, can someone help me fix my a) bootcamp, b) getting files and if a and b are fixed c) to install ubuntu as a VM?

• Access PC Settings Easily from Your Desktop in Windows 8 and 8.1

  Accessing your system’s settings in Windows 8 is not exactly the most straight-forward of processes, so if you need to change your settings often, then it can be a bit frustrating. With that in mind, the good folks over at 7 Tutorials have created an awesome shortcut that will take all the hassle out of accessing those settings, and make ‘tweaking’ Windows 8 much easier. After downloading the zip file, extract the exe file and place it in an appropriate folder, then create a shortcut. Once you have the new shortcut set up in the desired location (i.e. desktop or pinned to the taskbar), accessing your system’s settings has never been easier in Windows 8 and 8.1! Special Note: If you are someone who runs files through VirusTotal before using them, be aware that two listings there (Commtouch and Symantec) will flag the file as malware.
