  Last week I decided to use TeamViewer VPN to administer software on a server behind a firewall using RemoteDesktop. It was easy to configure to start-up with the system and make VPN available on the other side but now it fails to connect at the step shown below: The remote machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there a native way to circumvent the external firewall using a server role or feature to make Windows Server do the VPN work? Do people have better / more reliable experiences with other products such as Hamachi? • Restrict access to ESXi

  What is the best option to restrict access to ESXi machine so that it could be managed using VSphere client from only certain hosts? I know there is no built-in firewall and everyone recommends placing an ESXi machine behind a firewall, but when this is not an option... Is there any other option like using hosts.allow/deny or anything else? Or I better use ESX instead of ESXi? Edit: In the given circumstances, I am not able to add any additional hardware or use things like managed switches.

• BlueCoat reverse proxy NTLM authentication

  Currently when we want to access an internal site from Internet (IIS with NTLM auth), we have two login screens that appear : step1 : LDAPAuth, from the BlueCoat that check login/password validity against Active Directory step2 : NTLM auth, from our application. Is it possible to configure the reverse proxy to use the LDAP credentials provided at step1, and give them to whatever application that requests them ? Of course, if those credentials aren't valid, nothing happens. We're using BlueCoat SG400. Update : we're not looking for SSO where the user doesn't have to enter a password. We want the user to enter his domain credentials in the LDAPAuth dialog box, and the proxy to reuse it to authenticate against our application. Or any application that uses NTLM. We've only got 1 AD domain behind the reverse proxy.

• smartctl or hddtemp for xvda [on hold]

  I'm trying to check the state of the drives on a remote server running Debian wheezy. I'm using a software RAID10 on top of, I guess, xen, since the entries in /dev are /dev/xvda and /dev/xvdb But it I try smartctl -a /dev/xvda I get /dev/xvda: Unable to detect device type Smartctl: please specify device type with the -d option. I've tried various device type guesses, none work Similar problem with hddtemp, which reports ERROR: /dev/xvda: can't determine bus type (or this bus type is unknown) I've searched the smartmontools documentation, but can't find any discussion of virtual disks. . . How do I get behind the virtualisation to something smart tools or hddtemp can work with?

• VMWare Server 2 Install is Failing w/ Error 25032: "failed to customize windows logon process"

  VMWare Server 2 install question here.* Straightforward question that would probably require a VMWare expert to pull apart, given that Google has been totally worthless on this. On a patched Windows XP machine, any attempt to install VMWare Server 2.0.1 results in failure, just prior to completion (progress bar is full but I can tell network adapter stuff hasn't been fired yet and most of the services haven't been instaled). The error: Error 25032. Failed to customize Windows logon process (). Please contact your administrator. Upon dismissing the error, you're treated to: Warning 25033. Failed to remove Windows logon customization (VMGINA.DLL). Please contact your administrator. Clicking "OK" rolls back your installation. Killing the installer and hoping that it somehow leaves a working install behind was also unproductive. *I hope install troubleshooting isn't outside the purview of serverfault, I'm typically an SO user.

• Powerpoint template image placeholders can't send to back

  We want to be able to set up a PowerPoint 2007 template with a picture frame image. We then want to insert an image in normal view which would appear behind the picture frame image that was put in the template (so it looks logically like a picture in a picture frame). Problem is, when we insert the image in normal view it always appears on top of the picture frame image. It appears that you can't send to back when the other elements are included in a template. Any ideas?

• Organizing code, logical layout of segmented files

  I have known enough about programming to get me in trouble for about 10 years now. I have no formal education, though I've read many books on the subject for various languages. The language I am primarily focused on now would be php, atleast for the scale of things I am doing now. I have used some OOP classes for a while, but never took the dive into understanding principals behind the scenes. I am still not at the level I would like to be expression-wise...however my recent reading into a book titled The OOP Thought Process has me wanting to advance my programming skills. With motivation from the new concepts, I have started with a new project that I've coded some re-usable classes that deal with user auth, user profiles, database interfacing, and some other stuff I use regularly on most projects. Now having split my typical garbled spaghetti bowl mess of code into somewhat organized files, I've come into some problems when it comes to making sure files are all included when they need to be, and how to logically divide the scripts up into classes, aswell as how segmented I should be making each class. I guess I have rambled on enough about much of nothing, but what I am really asking for is advise from people, or suggested reading that focuses not on specific functions and formats of code, but the logical layout of projects that are larger than just a hobby project. I want to learn how to do things proper, and while I am still learning in some areas, this is something that I have no clue about other than just being creative, and trial/error. Mostly error. • What are the consequences of giving an AD domain differing NetBIOS and DNS names?

  In the past, when creating AD domains, I've used the common convention of using a sub-domain of the company's publicly registered domain name, e.g "corp.mycompany.com" or "int.mycompany.com". I've always accepted the default NetBIOS name when running DCPromo, for fear that creating a NetBIOS name that differs from the sub-domain may cause complications. I've recently been doing a bit of research on the consequences of providing an alternate NetBIOS name. The main reasons behind this are: The NetBIOS name isn't particularly descriptive or unique to the company Apparently generic NetBIOS names such as "CORP" or "INT" can cause issues when merging IT systems (although I've not had experience with this myself) Providing something "before the slash" that means more to users (less important) In looking at the possible downsides, the only one I can come up with is the disjointed namespace issue when configuring Exchange. Can anybody with more experience than I elaborate on my findings at all? Many thanks

• Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

  I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction? • Remove apache from ubuntu

  I want to remove apache as if it was never installed, no config files left behind. I intend to reinstall apache2 fresh. I have tried various combinations of apt-get options to no success. apt-get remove apache2 apt-get remove --purge apache2 apt-get purge apache2 apt-get autoremove apache2 None of these totally remove apache properly. Nothing works, the /etc/apache2 directory still exists. So I deleted it. When I install apache the folder is never created. Running Ubuntu server 10.10.

• UIView Controller mysteriously getting deallocated

  I have a UINavigation scheme with a "welcome" page, a middle page, and a detail page. In the middle page, there's a segmented controller that can swap the main body of that page between a table, a calendar, and a MKMapView, each implemented with their own view controller classes. Today I implemented the MapView and its annotations and all of that. It's nice. And a detail disclosure on each callout takes you to the detail page just the same way as if you'd gotten there via the table. Lovely. I also have a right-button-bar button that pushes in a "search" view. From there you can search the data I'm navigating. When it's done filtering the data (an array of objects I'm keeping in a data singleton), it makes the table reload its data, and calls my annotation-clearer-and-builder methods on the map view, and then pops itself out, so the "middle" page (including whatever view was in the guts of it) is back on the screen. Problem is, if I go back and forth between the map and the search a couple times, any mention of the table view causes us to crash with: *** -[CALayer retain]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x710b810. (I obviously have NSZombies turned on.) I put an NSLog in the dealloc method of my table view controller. That thing's never getting called. I don't know if we're ditching it behind the scenes for memory purposes, or if I'm leaking it and can't get my hands back on it, or what. I'm sort of at a loss about where to look. Any hints?

  I'm trying to put together a relatively complex flow-chart thing -as part of a University assignment (health-related, and gosh, does my university love all things Microsoft Office...). Because of the way the chart progresses I have to connect two objects with a 'double elbow' version of the 'elbow arrow connector.' I accept that perhaps this complexity means I should redesign the chart, but I've tried and failed to simplify things already. No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.

• Good free OCR with GUI for correcting mistakes? (for Windows)

  I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting mistakes. Unfortunately it makes a lot of mistakes! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) On the other hand Tesseract is more accurate but has no GUI at all. Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has a nice GUI and a low error rate? I want it to highlight suspect words (by OCR uncertainty, not just spell checking) and show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does. Open-source would be best, followed by freeware, then trial / demo / crippleware a long way behind.

• WPF - Setting ComboBox.SelectedItem in XAML based on matching object

  Hi, so, I have templated combobox that is basically acting as a simple colour palette. It is populated with a list of SolidColorBrush objects. Fine. Now, I have some data that holds the hex value of the current colour. I have a converter that converts the hex into a SolidColorBrush. Also fine. Now, I want to set the SelectedItem property of the combobox based on the colour from my datasource. Since my combo is populated with objects of type SolidColourBrush, and my binding converter is returning a SolidColorBrush, I assumed it would be as simple as saying: SelectedItem="{Binding Color, Converter={StaticResource StringToBrush}}" However... it doesn't work :( I've tested that the binding is working behind the scenes by using the exact same value for the Background property of the combobox. It works fine. So, clearly I can't just say SelectedItem = [something] where that [something] is basically an object equal to the item I want to be selected. What is the right way to do this? Surely it's possible in a XAML-only styley using binding, and I don't have to do some nasty C# iterating through all items in the combobox trying to find a match (that seems awfully old-school)...? • Multi-monitor aterm transparency

  I have 3 monitors which I set the background with using xpmroot my-5760x1200bg.png I then setup aterm to use transparency by adding the following to my ~/.Xdefaults file. aterm*transparent:true aterm*shading:60 aterm*background:Black aterm*foreground:White aterm*scrollBar:true aterm*scrollBar_right:true aterm*transpscrollbar:true aterm*saveLines:32767 aterm*font:*-*-fixed-medium-r-normal--*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 aterm*boldFont:*-*-fixed-bold-r-normal--*-*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 I am getting transparency on my aterm windows, but the image that is coming through with the transparency isn't correct. On the left monitor things are fine, but the middle and right monitors both seem to use the leftmost 1920x1200 of the background image as what is behind the terminal window. It would be as if every screen had the same background as the monitor on the left. Is this something that can be configured to be correct, or is this a bug? I'm running Gentoo Linux with Xmonad.

• What are the best options for a root filesystem hosted on SSD under Linux

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

• Flash As3 Mute Button problems

  Hey guys, I am trying to create a UI movie clip that can be used across different scenes. It uses variables from the root scope to determine states. When i press the mute button is works fine, however when i try to un-mute things go weird. Sometimes it takes 2 clicks to unmute, sometimes more. It seems random. Muting however seems to work first time.. Any ideas? • Is there a way to bridge two outgoing TCP connections in order to bypass firewalls and NAT?

  We're all familiar with the problem of port-forwarding and NAT: if you want to expose something to accepting an incoming connection, you need to configure port-forwarding on the router or conjure up some other black magickery to "punch holes" in the firewall using UDP or something. I'm fairly new to the whole "hole-punching" concept so could someone explain how it works? Essentially, I'd like to understand how hole-punching would work and the theory behind it, as well as if two TCP connections could be bridged via a third party. Since there's no issue with outgoing TCP connections since it's handled with NAT, could a third party bridge the connections so that the two parties are still connected but without the bandwidth cost of traffic going through the third party?

  Mozilla Thunderbird v.3.1.7 I am trying to setup Gmail, but none of the settings are working. I have tried every resource: Blogs, tutorials Instructions by Google Instructions by Thunderbird Questions here But, still its not working. My settings are as follows Server Settings Server Type: IMAP Mail server Server Name: imap.gmail.com Username: [email protected] Port: 993 Default: 993 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Outgoing server (SMTP) Server Name: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Default: 25 Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Username: [email protected] IMAP is enabled in my Gmail settings. ERROR: Connection to the server [email protected] timed out. I am behind a proxy server and I have configured those settings under: Thunderbird Preferences - Advanced - Network and Disk Space - Connection Settings - Manual Proxy Configuration The proxy configuration works, as when I created a Blogs and News feeds a/c, it was working properly and fetching the feeds for me. So, Thunderbird is configured properly as per the proxy settings. Help me.

• Not able to access other machines on network

  Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

• Posting data from multiple servers routing through one server to client server

  I have 5 webservers behind Load balancer and we have a client server at other end. Client has white listed my 5 webserver public ip so that my webservers will post a file to the client server. Here the problem is my webservers is going to increase and i cannot always ask client to make my new webserver ip's white list. So i would like to make my infra this way, my webservers will post data to the client server routing from a single server. Like assume that web-1 is main server and the remaining 4 web servers will post data to client server routing through main web-1. I was told that this can be achieved by doing IP Tunneling. But i have no idea how to do that. Would be great for any kind of help.

• Pinning Google Chrome's "Application Shortcuts" to the Windows 7 Taskbar

  I love the idea behind Google Chromes Application Shortcuts, but they don't integrate well for me into the Windows 7 taskbar. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have my most used webpages (gmail, calendar, etc) as separate windows, pinned to the Windows 7 taskbar. I've created some application shortcuts on my desktop, but I've come across the following problems. If I open my gmail application shortcut, and then later on open a normal chrome window the new window will also use the gmail icon in the taskbar, even if that window has nothing to do with gmail. (What's weirder, is that this new window then uses a high-res gmail icon, but my actually application shortcut window uses a low-res icon. If I pin the application shortcut to the taskbar, then the icon turns into the regular chrome icon. Any idea's how to fix these issues? Or are they bugs in google chrome? Chrome version: 4.0.249.89

• flash as3 document class and event listeners

  I think i have this document class concept entirly wrong now, i was wondering if someone mind explaining it.. I assumed that the above class would be instantiated within the first frame on scene one of a movie. I also assumed that when changing scenes the state of the class would remain constant so any event listeners would still be running.. Scene 1: I have a movieclip named ui_mc, that has a button in for muting sound. Scene 2: I have the same movie clip with the same button. Now the eventListener picks it up in the first scene, however it does not in the second. I am wondering for every scene do the event listeners need to be resetup? If that is the case if their an event listener to listen for the change in scene, so i can set them back up again lol..
