  • Writing JavaScript from a Custom Control

    - by coffeeaddict
I'm new to writing custom controls. I have MyCustomControl.cs and in my Render method I want to render out about 50 lines of JavaScript. What's the best way to do this, use the writer? protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { writer.write(@"<script type....rest of opening tag here"); writer.Write(@" function decode(s) { return s.replace(/&amp;/g, ""&"") .replace(/&quot;/g, '""') .replace(/&#039;/g, ""'"") .replace(/&lt;/g, ""<"") .replace(/&gt;/g, "">""); };" ); I plan on having around 6 more writer.Write to write out some more sections here. Is that the best approach to actually perform the writing of JavaScript in this manor? or should I use ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock? So what's the best practice or common way people are writing javascript from a custom control? (I'm not talking about a user control here!!, custom control/Class!) I also want to keep any indentation for readability once it's spit out/rendered on the client when viewing source.

  • MVC3 Custom view engine

    - by eth0
I have a custom View Engine that derives from WebFormViewEngine. There's a lot of stuff going on in here, mostly caching. I want to be able to use WebFormViewEngine AND RazorViewEngine at the same time, is this possible? Ideally I'd like to do; ViewEngines.Add(new MyViewEngine<WebFormsViewEngine>()); ViewEngines.Add(new MyViewEngine<RazorViewEngine>()); if a .ascx/.aspx/.master file exists then use WebForms, otherwise use Razor is a .cshtml file exists. EDIT: I should of worded my question better. As my custom view engine derives from WebFormViewEngine it obviously uses WebForms, I can't derive from two classes. I can derive from RazorViewEngine but then I'll loose WebForms. I can duplicate my code entirely, derive from RazorViewEngine and edit the views file extensions, etc. but as I said I've got a lot of custom code in my view engine and would be duplicating hundreds of lines. WebFormViewEngine and RazorViewEngine derive from BuildManagerViewEngine which in turn implements IViewEngine. The problem with that is I have to implement methods CreatePartialView() and CreateView() but how would I know what to return (WebForms/Razor?) using generics?

  • How To: Custom HTML / CSS Text Button for "Facebook like" & "Twitter Follow"

    - by 1Line
So i have had a little hunt online about creating custom Facebook like buttons and custom twitter follow button but not really found a solution so thought i would ask here and see if anyone knows of a solution for this (currently i have coded some jQuery to get Facebook and Twitter counts using JSON which works but want some custom buttons as per below) I have the count working all ok, just need to tackle the like and follow buttons - it is done in jquery at the moment so would like to continue to use that if this has to be done via that. at the moment i use the API for each to get the count, if i can integrate into the current js i have to get the calls / functions i require would be good: // grab from facebook var facebook = $.getJSON('https://graph.facebook.com/'+f_page+'?callback=?', function(data) { fb_count = data['likes'].toString(); fb_count_gt = data['likes'].toString(); fb_count = add_commas(fb_count); $('#fb_count').html(fb_count); }); // grab from twitter var twitter = $.getJSON("https://twitter.com/users/"+t_page+".json?callback=?",function(data) { twit_count = data['followers_count'].toString(); twit_count_gt = data['followers_count'].toString(); twit_count = add_commas(twit_count); $('#twitter_count').html(twit_count); }); Thanks in advance!

  • Dynamically adding custom view to RemoteViews

    - by Naidu
Could any help me to do this?My code is like: public CustomClass extends View { //uses ondraw() to do something } For displaying my custom view on HomeScreen i created a class to extend Broadcast Receiver public class customAppWidgetProvider extends BroadcastReceiver { public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { String action = intent.getAction(); if (AppWidgetManager.ACTION_APPWIDGET_UPDATE.equals(action)) { RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews(context.getPackageName(), R.layout.main); //Here i want to create my custom view class object and i want to add this view to linear layout in main.xml CustomClass object = new CustomClass(context) ; LinearLayout layout = new LinearLayout(context) ; layout.setLayoutParameters(new LayoutParameters(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); layout.addView(object); views.addview(R.id.linearlayout, (ViewGroup) layout) ; views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.id.analog_appwidget, PendingIntent.getActivity(context, 0, new Intent(context, AlarmClock.class), PendingIntent.FLAG_CANCEL_CURRENT)); int[] appWidgetIds = intent.getIntArrayExtra( AppWidgetManager.EXTRA_APPWIDGET_IDS); AppWidgetManager gm = AppWidgetManager.getInstance(context); gm.updateAppWidget(appWidgetIds, views); } } } But adding viewgroup to RemoteView reference is not working... above main.xml contains only LinearLayout.I want to add custom view object to it.But after running this not showing anything on screen.. please help me to do this. Thanks in Advance.

  • WCF custom certificate validation with BasicHttpBinding

    - by Sprklnh2o
I have a WCF application hosted on IIS 6 that needs to Have 2-way SSL authentication Validate client certificate content with some client host information Validate client certificate is issued by the valid subCA. I was able to do 1) successfully. I am trying to achieve 2) and 3) by following this - basically creating a class that inherits X509CertificateValidator and overriding the Validate method with my own validation implementation(step 2 and 3). I followed the MSDN instructions exactly however, it seem that the Validate method is not being called. I purposely throw a SecurityAccessDeniedException in the overidden Validate method and no exception is thrown when I tried to access the service via my browser. I can still access my website with any client certificate. I also read this thread but it didn't really help. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here's my configuration: <system.serviceModel> <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="SimpleServiceBehavior" name="SampleNameSpace.SampleClass"> <endpoint address="" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="NewBinding0" contract="SampleNameSpace.ISampleClass" /> </service> </services> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="SimpleServiceBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpsGetEnabled="true" policyVersion="Default" /> <serviceCredentials> <clientCertificate> <authentication certificateValidationMode="Custom" customCertificateValidatorType="SampleNameSpace.MyX509CertificateValidator, SampleAssembly"/> </clientCertificate> </serviceCredentials> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="NewBinding0"> <security mode="Transport"> <transport clientCredentialType="Certificate" /> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings>

  • Unable to sync custom authentication with RIA services in SL3 + RIA implementation

    - by Nair
I am developing SL3 + RIA services with custom authentication. I followed the example in http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/RiaServices/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=2661 to implement custom authentication. Based on the implementation, you first do login request from client to service. This request is async process. Noe the client GUI will start to bind data to SL controls using RIA services, which requires the authentication to be successful (by adding [RequireAuthentication] attribute). The trouble is, since you requested login from the main process, while it is doing authentication, the page control takes over and starts to bind data using RIA services. But the problem is authentication is not completed yet thus which ever the first service method data binding hits will fail with 'Access denied'. Bottom line is GUI is will not wait for authentication to be completed to start the data binding. My question is how do you handle this situation? Thanks,

  • WPF add c# code to customcontrol

    - by 0xDEAD BEEF
I want to create simple custom control (derived from control and with look defined in generics.xaml). I need to change size of elements defined in generic.xaml, when control is resized! It would be great to write some of that generic.xaml part in C#. Is that possible? Or is there a way to create MVVM like custom control? What i am willing to create is simple blinking led control (on,blinking, off).

  • WFP: How do you properly Bind a DependencyProperty to the GUI

    - by Robert Ross
    I have the following class (abreviated for simplicity). The app it multi-threaded so the Set and Get are a bit more complicated but should be ok. namespace News.RSS { public class FeedEngine : DependencyObject { public static readonly DependencyProperty _processing = DependencyProperty.Register("Processing", typeof(bool), typeof(FeedEngine), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(true, FrameworkPropertyMetadataOptions.AffectsRender)); public bool Processing { get { return (bool)this.Dispatcher.Invoke( DispatcherPriority.Normal, (DispatcherOperationCallback)delegate { return GetValue(_processing); }, Processing); } set { this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(DispatcherPriority.Normal, (SendOrPostCallback)delegate { SetValue(_processing, value); }, value); } } public void Poll() { while (Running) { Processing = true; //Do my work to read the data feed from remote source Processing = false; Thread.Sleep(PollRate); } // } } } Next I have my main form as the following: <Window x:Class="News.Main" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:converter="clr-namespace:News.Converters" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:News.Lookup" xmlns:rss="clr-namespace:News.RSS" Title="News" Height="521" Width="927" Initialized="Window_Initialized" Closing="Window_Closing" > <Window.Resources> <ResourceDictionary> <converter:BooleanConverter x:Key="boolConverter" /> <converter:ArithmeticConverter x:Key="arithConverter" /> ... </ResourceDictionary> </Window.Resources> <DockPanel Name="dockPanel1" SnapsToDevicePixels="False" > <ToolBarPanel Height="37" Name="toolBarPanel" Orientation="Horizontal" DockPanel.Dock="Top" > <ToolBarPanel.Children> <Button DataContext="{DynamicResource FeedEngine}" HorizontalAlignment="Right" Name="btnSearch" ToolTip="Search" Click="btnSearch_Click" IsEnabled="{Binding Path=Processing, Converter={StaticResource boolConverter}}"> <Image Width="32" Height="32" Name="imgSearch" Source="{Resx ResxName=News.Properties.Resources, Key=Search}" /> </Button> ... </DockPanel> </Window> As you can see I set the DataContext to FeedEngine and Bind IsEnabled to Processing. I have also tested the boolConverter separately and it functions (just applies ! (Not) to a bool). Here is my Main window code behind in case it helps to debug. namespace News { /// <summary> /// Interaction logic for Main.xaml /// </summary> public partial class Main : Window { public FeedEngine _engine; List<NewsItemControl> _newsItems = new List<NewsItemControl>(); Thread _pollingThread; public Main() { InitializeComponent(); this.Show(); } private void Window_Initialized(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Load current Feed data. _engine = new FeedEngine(); ThreadStart start = new ThreadStart(_engine.Poll); _pollingThread = new Thread(start); _pollingThread.Start(); } } } Hope someone can see where I missed a step. Thanks.

  • Goodbye XML&hellip; Hello YAML (part 2)

    - by Brian Genisio's House Of Bilz
Part 1 After I explained my motivation for using YAML instead of XML for my data, I got a lot of people asking me what type of tooling is available in the .Net space for consuming YAML.  In this post, I will discuss a nice tooling option as well as describe some small modifications to leverage the extremely powerful dynamic capabilities of C# 4.0.  I will be referring to the following YAML file throughout this post Recipe: Title: Macaroni and Cheese Description: My favorite comfort food. Author: Brian Genisio TimeToPrepare: 30 Minutes Ingredients: - Name: Cheese Quantity: 3 Units: cups - Name: Macaroni Quantity: 16 Units: oz Steps: - Number: 1 Description: Cook the macaroni - Number: 2 Description: Melt the cheese - Number: 3 Description: Mix the cooked macaroni with the melted cheese Tooling It turns out that there are several implementations of YAML tools out there.  The neatest one, in my opinion, is YAML for .NET, Visual Studio and Powershell.  It includes a great editor plug-in for Visual Studio as well as YamlCore, which is a parsing engine for .Net.  It is in active development still, but it is certainly enough to get you going with YAML in .Net.  Start by referenceing YamlCore.dll, load your document, and you are on your way.  Here is an example of using the parser to get the title of the Recipe: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var title = recipe["Title"] as string; In a similar way, you can access data in the Ingredients set: var yaml = YamlLanguage.FileTo("Data.yaml") as Hashtable; var recipe = yaml["Recipe"] as Hashtable; var ingredients = recipe["Ingredients"] as ArrayList; foreach (Hashtable ingredient in ingredients) { var name = ingredient["Name"] as string; } You may have noticed that YamlCore uses non-generic Hashtables and ArrayLists.  This is because YamlCore was designed to work in all .Net versions, including 1.0.  Everything in the parsed tree is one of two things: Hashtable, ArrayList or Value type (usually String).  This translates well to the YAML structure where everything is either a Map, a Set or a Value.  Taking it further Personally, I really dislike writing code like this.  Years ago, I promised myself to never write the words Hashtable or ArrayList in my .Net code again.  They are ugly, mostly depreciated collections that existed before we got generics in C# 2.0.  Now, especially that we have dynamic capabilities in C# 4.0, we can do a lot better than this.  With a relatively small amount of code, you can wrap the Hashtables and Array lists with a dynamic wrapper (wrapper code at the bottom of this post).  The same code can be re-written to look like this: dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); var title = doc.Recipe.Title; And dynamic doc = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); foreach (dynamic ingredient in doc.Recipe.Ingredients) { var name = ingredient.Name; } I significantly prefer this code over the previous.  That’s not all… the magic really happens when we take this concept into WPF.  With a single line of code, you can bind to the data dynamically in the view: DataContext = YamlDoc.Load("Data.yaml"); Then, your XAML is extremely straight-forward (Nothing else.  No static types, no adapter code.  Nothing): <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Title}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Description}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.Author}" /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Recipe.TimeToPrepare}" /> <TextBlock Text="Ingredients:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Ingredients}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Quantity}" /> <TextBlock Text=" " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Units}" /> <TextBlock Text=" of " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> <TextBlock Text="Steps:" FontWeight="Bold" /> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Recipe.Steps}" Margin="10,0,0,0"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Number}" /> <TextBlock Text=": " /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Description}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> </StackPanel> This nifty XAML binding trick only works in WPF, unfortunately.  Silverlight handles binding differently, so they don’t support binding to dynamic objects as of late (March 2010).  This, in my opinion, is a major lacking feature in Silverlight and I really hope we will see this feature available to us in Silverlight 4 Release.  (I am not very optimistic for Silverlight 4, but I can hope for the feature in Silverlight 5, can’t I?) Conclusion I still have a few things I want to say about using YAML in the .Net space including de-serialization and using IronRuby for your YAML parser, but this post is hopefully enough to see how easy it is to incorporate YAML documents in your code. • Customize WPF databinding: How to add custom logic?

    - by Ashwani Mehlem
Hi, i have a question regarding some complex data-binding. I want to be able to update a grid (which has the property "IsItemsHost" set to true) dynamically whenever a data-binding occurs. To be more specific, i bind the grid to some items and i want to change the number of grid rows depending on these items, add something like a header (one row containing some text), and set the items' Grid.Row and Grid.Column using some custom logic. What is the easiest way to apply such behaviour whenever the bound data is updated? Do i have to use a viewmodel that also contains the header data? Thanks in advance.

  • User controls & Composite web server controls

    - by Shekhar_Pro
Well Its both a poll and a question. Which approach should i prefer when it comes to writing a custom control in ASP.Net. Should i create a custom User control or should I create a Composite Web Server control. And how about adding a Designer support to the composite control. How are they different from each other and their Pros and Cons. Differentiating with an example of each will be preferable.

  • WPF Custom ListBox as Buttons Click not firing

I am attempting to have a ListBox of TextBoxes with click events. I have read that one way to achieve this was to have a list of Buttons and call ButtonBase.Click="" on the ListBox. • Visual C++ preprocessor definitions

    - by alemjerus
Is there a way to transfer C++ preprocessor definitions into a custom pre-link step procedure call as a command-line parameter or export them into a file any other way? Example: Let's say, I have a c++ project, and in it's Debug configuration I put a preprocessor definition like MAKUMBA_OBA=0x13 Then I add custom pre-link step which executes some javascript like sarahjessicaparker.js /to tomsrhinoplasty $(MAKUMBA_OBA) It would be great, if it just worked, but I never get a third parameter in my js. So the question is: how to pass a preprocessor definition to s script?

  • Unit testing custom controls in Silverlight

    - by Hrvoje
I have several custom controls (some kind of frames for content and layout management, like wrap panel), and would like to write unit tests for them. It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

  • Problem in generation of custom classes at web service client

I have a web service which receives an custom object and returns another custom object. It can be deployed successfully on GlassFish or JBoss. @WebMethod(operationName = "providerRQ") @WebResult(name = "BookingInfoResponse" , targetNamespace = "http://tlonewayresprovidrs.jaxbutil.rakes.nhst.com/") public com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse providerRQ(@WebParam(name = "BookingInfoRequest" , targetNamespace = "http://tlonewayresprovidrq.jaxbutil.rakes.nhst.com/") com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrq.BookingInfoRequest BookingInfoRequest) { com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse BookingInfoResponse = new com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse(); return BookingInfoResponse; } But when I create a client for this web service, two instances of BookingInfoRequest and BookingInfoResponse generated even I need only one instance. • WPF: Custom control that binds its content to a label

    - by nialsh
    I want to write a custom control that's used like this: <HorizontalTick>Some string</HorizontalTick> It should render like this: -- Some string ------------------------------------------- Here's my code: <UserControl x:Class="WeatherDownloadDisplay.View.HorizontalTick" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="348" Name="controlRoot"> <DockPanel LastChildFill="True"> <UserControl VerticalAlignment="Center" BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="1" Width="10"/> <Label Content="???" /> <UserControl VerticalAlignment="Center" BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="1"/> </DockPanel> It works except for the label binding. Can someone help me fill in the question marks? I thought about using a ContentPresenter but it seems like an inline binding would be best. -Neal

  • How to Create A Document Type Definition

    - by DaveDev
Hi Guys I've been creating a lot of my own custom attributes in my XHTML documents lately, and am aware that because they are custom attributes, they won't validate against the W3C standard. Isn't it true that I can specify my own DTD to make it validate? If so, can anyone tell me what's involved in doing this in an ASP.NET MVC app? Thanks Dave

  • When should I be cautious using about data binding in .NET?

    - by Ben McCormack
I just started working on a small team of .NET programmers about a month ago and recently got in a discussion with our team lead regarding why we don't use databinding at all in our code. Every time we work with a data grid, we iterate through a data table and populate the grid row by row; the code usually looks something like this: Dim dt as DataTable = FuncLib.GetData("spGetTheData ...") Dim i As Integer For i = 0 To dt.Rows.Length - 1 '(not sure why we do not use a for each here)' gridRow = grid.Rows.Add() gridRow(constantProductID).Value = dt("ProductID").Value gridRow(constantProductDesc).Value = dt("ProductDescription").Value Next '(I am probably missing something in the code, but that is basically it)' Our team lead was saying that he got burned using data binding when working with Sheridan Grid controls, VB6, and ADO recordsets back in the nineties. He's not sure what the exact problem was, but he remembers that binding didn't work as expected and caused him some major problems. Since then, they haven't trusted data binding and load the data for all their controls by hand. The reason the conversation even came up was because I found data binding to be very simple and really liked separating the data presentation (in this case, the data grid) from the in-memory data source (in this case, the data table). "Loading" the data row by row into the grid seemed to break this distinction. I also observed that with the advent of XAML in WPF and Silverlight, data-binding seems like a must-have in order to be able to cleanly wire up a designer's XAML code with your data. When should I be cautious of using data-binding in .NET?

  • Binding a Value from a View-Model to the View-Model of a child User Control in Silverlight?

    - by andrej351
Hi there, So i have a UserControl for one of my Views and have another 'child' UserControl inside that. The outer 'parent' UserControl has a Collection on its View-Model and a Grid control on it to display a list of Items. I want to place another UserControl inside this UserControl to display a form representing the details of one Item. The outer / parent UserControl's View-Model already has a property on it to hold the currently selected Item and i would like to bind this to a DependancyProperty on the inner / child UserControl. I would then like to bind that DependancyProperty to a property on the child UserControl's View-Model. I can then set the DependancyProperty once in XAML with a binding expression and have the child UserControl do all its work in its View-Model like it should. The code i have looks like this.. Parent UserControl: <UserControl x:Class="ItemsListView" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" DataContext="{Binding Source={StaticResource ServiceLocator}, Path=ItemsListViewModel}"> <!-- Grid Control here... --> <ItemDetailsView Item="{Binding Source={StaticResource ServiceLocator}, Path=ItemsListViewModel.SelectedItem}" /> </UserControl> Child UserControl: <UserControl x:Class="ItemDetailsView" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" DataContext="{Binding Source={StaticResource ServiceLocator}, Path=ItemDetailsViewModel}" ItemDetailsView.Item="{Binding Source={StaticResource ServiceLocator}, Path=ItemDetailsViewModel.Item, Mode=TwoWay}"> <!-- Form controls here... --> </UserControl> The selected Item is bound to the DependancyProperty fine. However from the DependancyProperty to the child View-Model does not. I've used this sort of apporach in a WPF app without problems. It appears to be a situation where there are two concurrent bindings which need to work but with the same target for two sources. Why won't the second (in the child UserControl) binding work?? Is there a way to acheive the behaviour I'm after?? Cheers.

  • Override `drop` for a custom sequence

    - by Bruno Reis
In short: in Clojure, is there a way to redefine a function from the standard sequence API (which is not defined on any interface like ISeq, IndexedSeq, etc) on a custom sequence type I wrote? 1. Huge data files I have big files in the following format: A long (8 bytes) containing the number n of entries n entries, each one being composed of 3 longs (ie, 24 bytes) 2. Custom sequence I want to have a sequence on these entries. Since I cannot usually hold all the data in memory at once, and I want fast sequential access on it, I wrote a class similar to the following: (deftype DataSeq [id ^long cnt ^long i cached-seq] clojure.lang.IndexedSeq (index [_] i) (count [_] (- cnt i)) (seq [this] this) (first [_] (first cached-seq)) (more [this] (if-let [s (next this)] s '())) (next [_] (if (not= (inc i) cnt) (if (next cached-seq) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (next cached-seq)) (DataSeq. id cnt (inc i) (with-open [f (open-data-file id)] ; open a memory mapped byte array on the file ; seek to the exact position to begin reading ; decide on an optimal amount of data to read ; eagerly read and return that amount of data )))))) The main idea is to read ahead a bunch of entries in a list and then consume from that list. Whenever the cache is completely consumed, if there are remaining entries, they are read from the file in a new cache list. Simple as that. To create an instance of such a sequence, I use a very simple function like: (defn ^DataSeq load-data [id] (next (DataSeq. id (count-entries id) -1 []))) ; count-entries is a trivial "open file and read a long" memoized As you can see, the format of the data allowed me to implement count in very simply and efficiently. 3. drop could be O(1) In the same spirit, I'd like to reimplement drop. The format of these data files allows me to reimplement drop in O(1) (instead of the standard O(n)), as follows: if dropping less then the remaining cached items, just drop the same amount from the cache and done; if dropping more than cnt, then just return the empty list. otherwise, just figure out the position in the data file, jump right into that position, and read data from there. My difficulty is that drop is not implemented in the same way as count, first, seq, etc. The latter functions call a similarly named static method in RT which, in turn, calls my implementation above, while the former, drop, does not check if the instance of the sequence it is being called on provides a custom implementation. Obviously, I could provide a function named anything but drop that does exactly what I want, but that would force other people (including my future self) to remember to use it instead of drop every single time, which sucks. So, the question is: is it possible to override the default behaviour of drop? 4. A workaround (I dislike) While writing this question, I've just figured out a possible workaround: make the reading even lazier. The custom sequence would just keep an index and postpone the reading operation, that would happen only when first was called. The problem is that I'd need some mutable state: the first call to first would cause some data to be read into a cache, all the subsequent calls would return data from this cache. There would be a similar logic on next: if there's a cache, just next it; otherwise, don't bother populating it -- it will be done when first is called again. This would avoid unnecessary disk reads. However, this is still less than optimal -- it is still O(n), and it could easily be O(1). Anyways, I don't like this workaround, and my question is still open. Any thoughts? Thanks.
