  • PTR Record for host in VLSM subnet

    - by paradroid
I understand that this is the way a PTR record would be made on a Class A subnet (10.100.250.100 255.0.0.0) dnscmd /RecordAdd 10.in-addr.arpa. 100.250.100 PTR host.domain.tld To clarify the syntax, this is what it should be for a Class C subnet (192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0) dnscmd /RecordAdd 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. 100 PTR host.domain.tld Is that right? Now how do I do this for a host with the IP address 172.31.111.210 on a 172.31.111.192/26 network? I'm not sure how to do this with a classless subnet mask.

  • Port Forwarding failing only to Ubuntu servers from Draytek router

    - by Rufinus
I know this is a kinda unusal question, but Draytek support (..which is very eager to solve the issue) seems to reach its limits. Scenario: Draytek Vigor Multiwan router with current firmware. Multiple WAN IP Aliases on one of the wan ports DMZ (or port forwarding doesnt matter) from wan ip alias to internal host currently i have two internal hosts: 192.168.0.51 (Ubuntu) 192.168.0.53 (Debian) both should be accessible from outside via one of the wan ip aliases. both are accessible with their internal ip's at all times (!) If the router gots restartet, both external ips are forwarding to its internal hosts. But after a few minutes up to 2 hours, the ubuntu host is no longer reachable via its external interface. The debian hosts on the other hand is reachable. In what does ubuntu differs from debian ? I know at least of one user with the exact same problem. see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10994279 Any ideas ? TIA EDIT: via ping diagnostics directly on vigor, 192.168.0.53 is pingable, 192.168.0.51 is not. but both hosts are perfectly reachable from anywhere inside the network. if i restart ubuntu networking it works again for a short time.... i'm out of ideas.. EDIT 2: after further investigation, i noticed a ping from .51 to the network (or a host in the internet) is enough to make the port-forwarding working again. So i will add an Cronjob as a "keep-alive" ping. This will solve the problem, but the reason for this behaivor is still in the dark. Thanks to all commentors.

  • Domain Squatter Blacklist

    - by David Chang
Is there a list of common ip addresses used by domain squatters (the ip addresses of the sites they resolve the domains to)? I have a list of domains and I need to remove most squatted/parked domains from the list, I can do that in a perl script (that currently removes dead domains) but I need the IP addresses the squatted domains resolve to so I can remove them as well. I know there are spam/phishing/malware blacklists available, does anyone know of a squatter blacklist? I can't find one using Google. EDIT: I am trying to remove dead domains from a list, I can already remove domains that don't resolve but I need to remove squatted domains as well so I need a list of ip addresses squatted domains resolve to so I can remove them.

  • Overwrite SOA expiry in a bind9 slave name server.

    - by Joachim Breitner
I run a slave name server of a domain that I do not have full control over (i.e. changing the SOA is not possibly). The SOA specifies an expiry time of one week. For various reasons, I’d like to override that value on my specific slave server to something larger. Is there a way to do that? N.B: I know that for the refresh and retry fields, bind9 provides the options min-refresh-time, max-refresh-time, min-retry-time and max-retry-time to overrule the SOA, as mentioned in the documentation. For some reason this just does not inclucde expiry.

  • CNAME Wildcards Server 2003

    - by Sean.C
Hi Gents, I'm looking to set up a wildcard cname on a FQDN but cant seem to get it to work. This is what i'm trying to achive: A Record : domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 A Record : en.domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 cname : www.*.en.domain.co.uk : --> uk.domain.co.uk I'm reasonably new to all this kind of thing, so it's pretty probably pretty straight forward. The number of sites forbids the use of multiple IP addresses. Thanks for any assistance.

  • Domain name is forwarding to my localhost, no idea why

    - by Dustin Fineout
On my local development machine, I have a WAMP setup (Windows Vista Home Premium, Apache 2, MySQL and PHP 5). One of my projects is rehash.dustinfineout.com, which may be related to the problem... For some reason, when I try to visit http://www.rehash.com in a browser, it forwards automatically to 127.0.0.1 loopback/localhost. I discovered this entirely accidentally. I have already looked at the http.conf and extra/httpd-vhosts.conf Apache configuration files and these are not causing it. I also checked the windows hosts file but that had no entries in it either (C:/WINDOWS/System32/drivers/etc/hosts - maybe there is another location I need to check). Any ideas? Just to clarify, rehash.com is NOT my domain.

  • BIND returns serverfail when querying for its authoriative domain

    - by estol
Hi there Serverfault folks! First of all: sorry about the title, I had some problem coming up with the proper title. I have a little home server set up, for internet sharing, samba, basic http, dlna mediaserver and what not, and I happend to have a domain at hand, so I thought why not direct it to this computer? I have a BIND 9.8.0 installed, and - afaik - configured it properly. For a few days, the public view did not worked, and I really did not cared, since the local view worked. But now suddenly, even the local view fails. If I try to query the nameserver for anything in my domain, it returns the following error: $ nslookup andromeda.dafaces.com ;; Got SERVFAIL reply from ::1, trying next server ;; Got SERVFAIL reply from ::1, trying next server Server: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 ** server can't find andromeda.dafaces.com.dafaces.com: SERVFAIL Also, the public view points to the old ip address of the domain, probably because of the same error. Some information about the system: $ uname -a Linux tressis 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 15 09:21:17 CET 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux $ named -v BIND 9.8.0 And the named.conf file: # cat /etc/named.conf // // /etc/named.conf // include "/etc/rndc.key"; #controls { # inet 127.0.0.1 allow {localhost; } keys { "dnskulcs"; }; #}; options { directory "/var/named"; pid-file "/var/run/named/named.pid"; auth-nxdomain yes; datasize default; // Uncomment these to enable IPv6 connections support // IPv4 will still work: listen-on-v6 { any; }; listen-on { any; }; // Add this for no IPv4: // listen-on { none; }; // Default security settings. // allow-recursion { 127.0.0.1; ::1; 192.168.1.0/24; }; // allow-recursion { any; }; allow-query { any; }; allow-transfer { 127.0.0.1; ::1; 92.243.14.172; 87.98.164.164; 88.191.64.64; }; allow-update { key "dnskulcs"; }; version none; hostname none; server-id none; zone-statistics yes; forwarders { 213.46.246.53; 213.26.246.54; 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4; 192.188.242.65; 193.227.196.3; 2001:470:20::2; }; }; view "local" { match-clients { 192.168.1.0/24; 127.0.0.1; ::1; fec0:0:0:ffff::/64; }; recursion yes; zone "localhost" IN { type master; file "localhost.zone"; allow-transfer { any; }; }; zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" IN { type master; file "127.0.0.zone"; allow-transfer { any; }; }; zone "." • BIND zones and named files

  • Separate zone exceptions for each view in BIND

    - by Stefan M
Problem: Separate zones by query source network and return different records for LAN clients compared to WAN clients. I've implemented this at home on a small alix router with Bind 9.4. One view called "lan" and one view called "wan". The "lan" view had just the root.hints file and one zone. The "wan" view had many other zones, including a copy of the one zone from the "lan" view, but with different records. Querying domain1.tld from the LAN would give me local records. Querying domain1.tld from the WAN would give me external records. Querying domain2.tld from the LAN would give me the same records as from the WAN as it only existed in the WAN view. Now I'm trying to re-implement this on a larger scale and suddenly my view is unable to query anything outside itself. This is natural according to the bind-users list and they suggest I copy all my views into my LAN view. I'm hoping someone here has a better solution because that means I'll have to copy, and maintain, thousands of zone files in multiple views. This is unfeasible. My configuration at home resembles this. acl lanClients { 192.168.22.0/24; 127.0.0.1; }; view "intranet" { match-clients { lanClients; }; recursion yes; notify no; // Standard zones // zone "." { type hint; file "etc/root.hint"; }; zone "domain1.tld" { type master; file "intranet/domain1.tld"; }; }; view "internet" { match-clients { !localnets; any; }; recursion no; allow-transfer { slaveDNS; }; include "master.zones"; }; Requests from the LAN for domain1.tld give local records, requests from the WAN give remote records. This works fine both at home and in my new Bind 9.7 on a larger scale. The difference is that at home I have somehow managed to make my LAN get remote records from domains in master.zones, without specifying those zones as duplicates in the "intranet" view. Trying this on a larger scale with Bind 9.7 I get no results at all except for the zones specified in the view. What am I missing? I've tried the same configuration for Bind 9.7.

  • Best all in one linux based proxy, firewall, dhcp and wins server.

    - by BeStRaFe
I help to run a lan in Sydney. We have a need for a proxy/gateway solution to allow those pesky games that require internet to work. I have been doing this with an ISA server and it has worked quite well. However now i wish to port this over to run on the same hardware as our cacti / nagios box under a vmware VM. ISA server is horridly nad due to the massive ram and i/o requirement for something is basically port blocking and handing out IP's. The needs are as follows. 1. DHCP 2. WINS (otherwise network devices fight over who is the WINS master) 3. Filtering based in PORT for outbound traffic. 4. Ability to whitelist IP/MAC's for internet access. 5. Web Interface. I had been thinking to use PFSENSE however there is no option for a WINS server and i cbf working my way around bsd.

  • How is it possible that I can do a host lookup but not a curl?

Has anyone ever seen this before? Note that this happens not only with google.com, but with every domain I try. • Duplicate free/busy or full calendar information between two exchange servers

    - by Wayne Arthurton
We have acquired a new entity with their own AD/Exchange environment. Until they fully join our domain, we need to sync their exchange calendars or minimally free/busy for users. All users in the acquisition have a new account in our organization. We have considered a number of options including CalDAV, but nothing seems to meet our needs. Even a client solutions to update the NEW server with the free/busy would be workable.

  • Pros and Cons of using internal or external domain name for Active Directory

    - by MadBoy
I was always thought to use internal domain name (company.local or company.corp) for Active Directory instead of (company.com or company.pl). Recently we were thinking that by using external domain name we can get some advantages for stuff like certificates for Exchange, Sharepoint and alike where internal and external name would be exactly the same making it unnecessary to buy special certificates. What are advantages and disadvantages for both? What could be potential problem when doing so and what could be a big advantage?

  • Best practices for thin-provisioning Linux servers (on VMware)

    - by nbr
I have a setup of about 20 Linux machines, each with about 30-150 gigabytes of customer data. Probably the size of data will grow significantly faster on some machines than others. These are virtual machines on a VMware vSphere cluster. The disk images are stored on a SAN system. I'm trying to find a solution that would use disk space sparingly, while still allowing for easy growing of individual machines. In theory, I would just create big disks for each machine and use thin provisioning. Each disk would grow as needed. However, it seems that a 500 GB ext3 filesystem with only 50 GB of data and quite a low number of writes still easily grows the disk image to eg. 250 GB over time. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong here? (I was surprised how little I found on the subject with Google. BTW, there's even no thin-provisioning tag on serverfault.com.) Currently I'm planning to create big, thin-provisioned disks - but with a small LVM volume on them. For example: a 100 GB volume on a 500 GB disk. That way I could more easily grow the LVM volume and the filesystem size as needed, even online. Now for the actual question: Are there better ways to do this? (that is, to grow data size as needed without downtime.) Possible solutions include: Using a thin-provisioning friendly filesystem that tries to occupy the same spots over and over again, thus not growing the image size. Finding an easy method of reclaiming free space on the partition (re-thinning?) Something else? A bonus question: If I go with my current plan, would you recommend creating partitions on the disks (pvcreate /dev/sdX1 vs pvcreate /dev/sdX)? I think it's against conventions to use raw disks without partitions, but it would make it a bit easier to grow the disks, if that is ever needed. This is all just a matter of taste, right?

  • How the heck is http://to./ a valid domain name?

    - by Chris
Apparently it's a URL shortener. It resolves just fine in Chrome and Firefox. How is this a valid top-level domain? Update: for the people saying it's browser shenanigans, why is it that: http://com./ does not take me to: http://www.com/? And, do browsers ever send you a response from some place other than what's actually up in the address bar? Aside from framesets and things like that, I thought browsers tried really hard to send you content only from the site in the address bar, to help guard against phishing.

  • Should I split my website into different servers

    - by Nyxynyx
I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • Why the VPN Network Shake-Up?

    - by Brent Arias
I can RDP to another machine on my home network, only if I'm not also hooked up to my employer's VPN with the Cisco VPN client. Indeed, I can't even ping the other machine by name in this mode, because ICMP suddenly thinks that ( ping myMachine ) now means ( ping myMachine.myEmployer.com ). Of course there is no machine by that latter name, and so it fails. Even weirder, once I disconnect from the VPN I can again ping myMachine successfully, but ICMP reports the machine by its MAC address instead of its IP address. I don't think I've ever seen ping identify another machine by its MAC address. So two questions: How can I access via RDP/ping the other machine BY NAME on my local network while also connected to the VPN? Why is ping identifying a MAC address for the machine on my home network, instead of an IP address? And how can I change this so that an IP address is reported instead? For question #1, I can indeed access the other machine on my home network by IP address. I suspect if I put the name-IP pair into my HOSTS file, then I would be able to access it even when connected to the VPN. But I wonder if there is another (more elegant) solution?
