  • Easiest (simple) explanation of "prototype" in JavaScript?

    - by alexeypro
Hello, Can somebody give me a resource (or just explanation? :-) of what "prototype" is and how it works in Javascript. May be comparison with something in Java? (not really necessary). But it should be as simple/easy as possible so inexperienced person just learning Javascript would understand (need to explain this to jr designer who is proficient with CSS/HTML, but not with Javascript). Thank you!

  • Dynamically add a field to an object in matlab

    - by Marc
Say I have a MATLAB object defined in a class file classdef foo properties bar end end And I create a foo object myfoo = foo(); Now I want to add another field to foo dynamically. What I want is foo.newfield = 42; but this will throw an error. I know there is a way to dynamically add a field/property to a MATLAB object but I can't remember it or find it easily in the help. Anyone know the syntax?

  • Converting a pointer for a base class into an inherited class

    - by Shawn B
Hey, I'm working on a small roguelike game, and for any object/"thing" that is not a part of the map is based off an XEntity class. There are several classes that depend on it, such as XPlayer, XItem, and XMonster. My problem is, that I want to convert a pointer from XEntity to XItem when I know that an object is in item. The sample code I am using to pick up an item is this, it is when a different entity picks up an item it is standing over. void XEntity::PickupItem() { XEntity *Ent = MapList; // Start of a linked list while(true) { if(Ent == NULL) { break; } if(Ent->Flags & ENT_ITEM) { Ent->RemoveEntity(); // Unlink from the map's linked list XItem *Item = Ent // Problem is here, type-safety // Code to link into inventory is here break; } Ent = Ent->MapList; } } My first thought was to create a method in XEntity that returns itself as an XItem pointer, but it creates circular dependencies that are unresolvable. I'm pretty stumped about this one. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Testing chess game

    - by mousey
There is a software for chess game and we need to test the following method: boolean canMoveTo(int x, int y) x and y are the coordinates of the chess board and it returns true/false whether the piece can move to that position or not. We need to test this method for a pawn piece and you can set up the board any way you like prior to running a test case. Source code is not provided

  • HTML5 Web DB Security

    - by darrenc
Hi all! I'm looking into an offline web app solution using HTML5. The functionality is everything I need BUT the data stored can be directly queried right in the browser and therefore completely unsecure! Is there anyway to encrypt/hide so that the data is secure? Thanks, D.

  • To Wrap or Not to Wrap: Wrapping Data Access in a Service Facade

    - by PureCognition
For a while now, my team and I have been wrapping our data access layer in a web service facade (using WCF) and calling it from the business logic layer. Meanwhile, we could simply use the repository pattern where the business logic layer consumes the data access layer locally through an interface, and at any point in time, we can switch things out for it to hit a service instead (if necessary). The question is: When is it a good time to wrap the data access layer in a service facade and when isn't it? Right now, it seems like the main advantage is that other applications can consume the service, but if they are internal applications written in .NET then they can just consume the .NET assembly instead. Are there other advantages of having the DAL be wrapped in a service that I am unaware of?

  • How to get current date and time from DB using SQLAlchemy

    - by bluish
I need to retrieve what's the current date and time for the database I'm connected with SQLAlchemy (not date and time of the machine where I'm running Python code). I've seen this functions, but they don't seem to do what they say: >>> from sqlalchemy import * >>> print func.current_date() CURRENT_DATE >>> print func.current_timestamp() CURRENT_TIMESTAMP Moreover it seems they don't need to be binded to any SQLAlchemy session or engine. It makes no sense... Thanks!

  • XCode - Copy sqlite DB from simulator and copy onto device for testing

    - by Neal L
Hello, I am working on a Core Data app, and have populated the sqlite file in the iPhone Simulator with all of the fixtures/data that I use to test the app. I would like to use that sqlite file as a standardized set of testing data. The devices that I test the app on all have different data sets, and I would like to standardize on the one in the simulator. Is there a way in XCode (3 or 4) to add a step to the build/install process that will copy the sqlite file from the iPhone Simulator and install it over the file on the phone (if one exists)? Thanks, Neal

  • c# Attribute Question

    - by Petoj
    Well i need some help here i don't know how to solve this problem. the function of the attribute is to determine if the function can be run... So what i need is the following: The consumer of the attribute should be able to determine if it can be executed. The owner of the attribute should be able to tell the consumer that now it can/can't be executed (like a event). It must have a simple syntax. This is what i have so far but it only implements point 1, 3. [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method, AllowMultiple = false)] public class ExecuteMethodAttribute : Attribute { private Func<object, bool> canExecute; public Func<object, bool> CanExecute { get { return canExecute; } } public ExecuteMethodAttribute() { } public ExecuteMethodAttribute(Func<object, bool> canExecute) { this.canExecute = canExecute; } }

  • stored procedure for importing txt in sql server db

    - by Iulian
I have to insert new records in a database every day from a text file ( tab delimited). I'm trying to make this into a stored procedure with a parameter for the file to read data from. CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateTable @FilePath BULK INSERT TMP_UPTable FROM @FilePath WITH ( FIRSTROW = 2, MAXERRORS = 0, FIELDTERMINATOR = '\t', ROWTERMINATOR = '\n' ) RETURN Then i would call this stored procedure from my code (C#) specifying the file to insert. This is obviously not working, so how can i do it ?

  • RIA Services for transmitting non DB object-graph

    - by Mike Gates
I have been getting into RIA services because I thought it would simplify dealing with the services layer of web applications I wish to build. I see lots of examples out there showing how to create DomainService classes which expose and consume entities that have some kind of relational database backing, and therefore have foreign-key relationships. However, I would like to know how to expose and consume normal object graphs...objects that contain references to eachother but don't have foreign keys. For example, say I want a service operation called "GetFolderInformation(string pathToFolder)". I want this to return a custom object called "FolderInformation" structured with: - string Name - IEnumerable<FileInformation> Files I cannot get this to work because it seems that RIA wants to deal with entities that have foreign key relationships. Why? Why can't the serializer just see my object references and recreate that in the proxy on the other side? Data exists behind service layers that doesn't necessarily have foreign key relationships...like folder/file for example. EDIT: I realized I hadn't asked my question! My question is, is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

  • Why are alloc and init called separately in Objective-C?

    - by André Hoffmann
Note: I'm relatively new to Objective-C and am coming from Java and PHP. Could someone explain to me why I always have to first allocate and then initialize an instance? Couldn't this be done in the init methods like this: + (MyClass*)init { MyClass *instance = [MyClass alloc]; [instance setFoo:@"bla"]; return instance; } + (MyClass*)initWithString:(NSString*)text { MyClass *instance = [MyClass init]; [instance setFoo:text]; return instance; } ... Is this just a relict from the old C days or is there something that I'm not seeing? I know this isn't a problem as I could as well always call alloc and init, but since it's a bit tedious I'd like to at least know why I'm doing it. I'm liking the expressiveness of the language so far, but this is something that I want to fully understand in order to think the Objective-C way. Thank you!

  • what POIs (Point of Interests) DB can I use for a commercial app

    - by Ellie
Hi, I need a POI database for a startup project I am working on - it will be a free basic version and a premium paid for version in the sense that user will pay a monthly subscription. I would like to use foursquare type checkin to places and plancast type functionality to search for places (one-line search). Ie I need to: - perform a search for POIs around a location - associate users to that POI, with a time stamp - allow users to add own POIs - provide free-text search for POIs (a la google one-line search) Google API allows great search, but I understand there are limits in number of requests that can be done? This would prevent scaling, and may result in application breaking when too many users. Also what does google T&C say about using this in a paid for service? Openstreetmap I understand does not have these contstraints, but do they also provide a good one-line search type API? Or how could I solve this? Many thanks for any advice, Ellie

  • CoreData : store images to DB or not?

    - by Meko
    Hi.I am making an app that it takes photos from web site for some Username and shows it on UITable with username then when clicking user name it shows photos for this user and then clicking to name of photo it shows full screen photo. My question is I am using NSData to get photos from internet.Am I have to save also those data to CoreDAta? I am using like when pressing name of user it again creates NSData and downloads photos from internet and shows them on UTable. And it takes time. What is good approach? and How can save this images to CoreDAta? I am using this method NSData *imageData=[flickr dataForPhotoID:firstPhoto.id fromFarm:firstPhoto.farm onServer:firstPhoto.server withSecret:firstPhoto.secret inFormat: FlickrFetcherPhotoFormatSquare]; and here definition of dataForPtohoID method - (NSData *)dataForPhotoID:(NSString *)photoID fromFarm:(NSString *)farm onServer:(NSString *)server withSecret:(NSString *)secret inFormat:(FlickrFetcherPhotoFormat)format { #if TEST_HIGH_NETWORK_LATENCY sleep(1); #endif NSString *formatString; switch (format) { case FlickrFetcherPhotoFormatSquare: formatString = @"s"; break; case FlickrFetcherPhotoFormatLarge: formatString = @"b"; break; } NSString *photoURLString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://farm%@.static.flickr.com/%@/%@_%@_%@.jpg", farm, server, photoID, secret, formatString]; NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:photoURLString]; return [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:url]; }
