• Best way to force Spring shutdown from a bean?

  My application uses a Spring DefaultMessageListenerContainer to process incoming messages. The main method of the app already registers a shutdown hook. Question is this: what is the best way to force the application context to shut down? If I throw a RuntimeException in the message listener, it is handled by the container, and not passed on. Is calling System.exit acceptable? Do I pass along the ApplicationContext to every class that needs to shut down, so I can call close() on it?

• Want to understand C++ sentry object

  I answered this [question][1] and somebody else had answered as he modern C++ equivalent would be a sentry object: construct it at the beginning of a function, with its constructor implementing call(), and upon return (or abnormal exit), its destructor implements I am not familiar with using sentry objects in C++. • How to know from a bash script if the user abruptly closes ssh session

  I have a bash script that acts as the default shell for a user loging in trough ssh. It provides a menu with several options one of wich is sending a file using netcat. The netcat of the embedded linux I'm using lacks the -w option, so if the user closes the ssh connection without ever sending the file, the netcat command waits forever. I need to know if the user abruptly closes the connection so the script can kill the netcat command and exit gracefully. Things I've tried so far: Trapping the SIGHUP: it is not issued. The only signal issued i could find is SIGCONT, but I don't think it's reliable and portable. Playing with the -t option of the read command to detect a closed stdin: this would work if not for a silly bug in the embedded read command (only times out on the first invocation)

• Why can't I do this from ASP.NET?

  The code below spawns the process and sits forever, never finishing. It doesn't matter what process I run. Also, if I use Shell with Wait it does the same thing. If I set wait to false in either approach it works just fine. It's ASP.NET 2.0 VB.NET DotNetNuke 4.0 on Windows Server 2003. I can't even phathom why this would hang up.   Hi, I'm using gdb to connect to a 2.6.31.13 linux kernel patched with KGDB over Ethernet, and when I try to detach the debugger I get this: (gdb) quit A debugging session is active. Inferior 1 [Remote target] will be killed. Quit anyway? (y or n) y Bogus trace status reply from target: E22 after that the session is still open, I can keep going on and on with ctrl+d, and the debugger doesn't exit. I've searched for that message in google and there are just 5 results (and none of them are useful :-/ ). Any idea of what could it be and how to fix it?

• R problems using rpart with 4000 records and 13 attributes

  I have attempted to email the author of this package without success, just wondering if anybody else has experienced this. I am having an using rpart on 4000 rows of data with 13 attributes. I can run the same test on 300 rows of the same data with no issue. When I run on 4000 rows, Rgui.exe runs consistently at 50% cpu and the UI hangs.... it will stay like this for at least 4-5hours if I let it run, and never exit or become responsive. here is the code I am using both on the 300 and 4000 size subset : train<-read.csv("input.csv",header=T) y<-train[,18] x<-train[,3:17] library(rpart) fit<-rpart(y~.,x) Is this a known limitation of rpart, am I doing something wrong? potential workarounds? any assistance appreciated

• Can I save my app's state at close time in iPhone OS?

  I have an app that functions much like an ebook. I have a bunch of textual information in various languages that is accessible through a number of drill down methods. When a user wants to get into where they were reading last, they currently have to navigate through the section and chapter menus to get back to where they were. An ideal solution for this would be to setup a bookmark system, which I am considering. But if I remember correctly, when iPhone OS 4 was announced, they seemed to make a big deal of the added ability to save the state of an app. Does that mean that someone using my reader app would be able to just exit right out, do whatever, and then when they came back in, it would be the reading screen just as they left it? I don't know much about how to setup a bookmarking system, I suppose it would be worth investigating, but I would probably want to just hold off for iPhone OS 4 if that is indeed what it will be capable of doing. Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated!!

  My understanding is that C++ allows static const members to be defined inside a class so long as it's an integer type. Why, then, does the following code give me a linker error? #include <algorithm> #include <iostream> class test { public: static const int N = 10; }; int main() { std::cout << test::N << "\n"; std::min(9, test::N); } The error I get is: test.cpp:(.text+0x130): undefined reference to `test::N' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Interestingly, if I comment out the call to std::min, the code compiles and links just fine (even though test::N is also referenced on the previous line). Any idea as to what's going on? My compiler is gcc 4.4 on Linux.

• m and s keys do not work over vnc connection to ubuntu server

  I'm new at setting a lot of this up, so bear with me. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 server on a 64 bit machine. Then I added vnc so I could manage it while it's racked. I start the server, SSH to it, and run vncserver :1 At this point, all keys work fine. Next I exit out of the SSH session and fire up my client vnc app. I connect via the IP :1, enter my password, and everything seems to be fine. Now when I enter a terminal (through the vnc connection) I cannot type lowercase "s" or "m" (upper case works). I've tried on two different pc's running the vnc client, but it's the same. I also installed the latest updates from Ubuntu as of today. Thanks for any help.

  I've perused the questions on ternary operators vs. if/else structures, and while I understand that under normal circumstances there is no performance loss/gain in using ternary operators over if/else structures, I've not seen any mention of this situation. Language specific to PHP (but any language agnostic details are welcome) does the interpreter reassign values in situations like this: $foo = 'bar' $foo = strlen($foo) > 3 ? substr($foo, 0, 3) : $foo; Since this would evaluate to $foo = $foo; is this inefficient, or does the interpreter simply overlook/discard this evaluation? On a side note, what about: !defined('SECURE') ? exit : null;

• Is there a way to set up a Linux pipe to non-buffering or line-buffering?

  My program is controlling an external application on Linux, passing in input commands via a pipe to the external applications stdin, and reading output result via a pipe from the external applications stdout. The problem is that writes to pipes are buffered by block, and not by line, and therefore delays occur before my app receives data output by the external application. The external application cannot be altered to add explicit fflush() calls. When I set the external application to /bin/cat -n (it echoes back the input, with line numbers added), it works correctly, it seems, cat flushes after each line. The only way to force the external application to flush, is sending exit command to it; as it receives the command, it flushes, and all the answers appears on the stdout, just before exiting. I'm pretty sure, that Unix pipes are appropiate solution for that kind of interprocess communication (pseudo server-client), but maybe I'm wrong. • What to do if exec() fails?

  Let's suppose we have a code doing something like this: int pipes[2]; pipe(pipes); pid_t p = fork(); if(0 == p) { dup2(pipes[1], STDOUT_FILENO); execv("/path/to/my/program", NULL); ... } else { //... parent process stuff } As you can see, it's creating a pipe, forking and using the pipe to read the child's output (I can't use popen here, because I also need the PID of the child process for other purposes). Question is, what should happen if in the above code, execv fails? Should I call exit() or abort()? As far as I know, those functions close the open file descriptors. Since fork-ed process inherits the parent's file descriptors, does it mean that the file descriptors used by the parent process will become unusable?

• Preprocessor not skipping asm directives

  I'm programming to a microprocessor (Coldfire) and I don't have access every day to the microprocessor trainer so I want to be able to execute some of my code on the computer. So I'm trying to skip a part of my code when executing on the computer by defining _TEST_. It doesn't work. It tries to compile the asm code and dies whining about not knowing the registers names (they're defined alright compiling against the Coldfire, not my Intel Core Duo). Any ideas why it's not working? or maybe an alternative way to run the code on the pc without commenting it out?. • Trying to use the "Use Specific Printer" option in Access 2007

  I am trying to set a report to use a specific printer. I go into design mode, click on the page setup ribbon, click the page setup bottun, go into the page tabt, click the option to choose a specific printer, and then click the printer button to choose the printer I want to use. I save the steps and exit out of the report, but it still goes back and prints from the default printer. Why? I had no problems with this feature in 2003, why am I having problems in 2007. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

• Stopping and Starting Apache Using PHP (!)

  Hello all, I have two problems which are related. 1) I have a batch file that contains this: net stop wampapache net start wampapache Which tries to stop and start my wamp server. When I double click the stop.bat file with the above it works successfully.
