• How can I fix intermittent iSight camera functionality on a Macbook Pro 5,2?

  I have a Macbook Pro 5,2 laptop dual booting OSX and Ubuntu. The built-in iSight video camera works only sporadically. By that I mean that sometimes if I boot and try to use the camera it does not work (most of the time) but other times it does. I don't have good repeatable data regarding when it does vs. when it doesn't other than to say that it always seems to work right after I upgrade to a new Linux kernel with the Update Manager and reboot, but then eventually stops working again until I upgrade the kernel again. That is hard to test repeatably, so it's hard to know for sure that that is the case. This has happened consistently with every version of Ubuntu from 10.10 through 11.10. I can get around this by booting into the OS/X partition, since all of the hardware obviously works perfectly on that side of things, but it would be great if I could remain in Ubuntu and do the same thing. • What language(s) do I need to learn in order to develop an application like this?

  I have an idea for making a web application. Ideally this application would have products which prices are increased each time a Retweet of the product at hand is made. Kind of like bids with tweets. Unfortunately my web development knowledge is very scarce. I know just basic HTML, virtually no CSS and that's it. I'm kindly asking for your insights on what you think would be best for making a web app like this. I have no good idea of where to start or what I need to get going. • Most appropriate diagram for GUI button design?

  What is the most appropriate diagram for GUI button design? Specifically, I have numerous buttons that will be changing color based on state information from operator input and input from various subcomponents and sensors. I would like to use UML or some other type of design diagrams to be able to capture the color transition. Some folks have suggested sequence diagrams, but I haven't been able to find any good examples that show how to incorporate this design artifact. • Expression Engine vs Drupal for Theming

  Ive been using Drupal for years and now with work need to learn Expression Engine. Im interested in the comparison of Drupal and Expression Engine, but purely from a theming point of view (Ive no doubt Drupal is more powerful for development). Does anyone have any insights? It seems EE does give you more control over the exact html outputted, but is this necessary? I design my graphics first and Ive always been able to make exactly what I wanted in Drupal (some theme overrides could be easier, but ive got there in the end). Thanks

• Mouse click firing twice

  I have recently switched to XUbuntu (14.04) and I have noticed that sometimes a mouse click is fired twice. E.g. I CTRL click a link and two tabs with the same content are opened in my browser. It's not behaviour I can reproduce consistently and seems to be random (to me). I also don't know of a good way to inspect the behaviour properly for debugging purposes. I have checked the double click time setting but this doesn't seem to have any impact on this. I also run XUbuntu (13.10) in a VM on my MacBook Air and this behaviour seems to absent there. At this point in time I can't really tell if this is related to the distribution or the fact that it runs in a VM. Any insights greatly appreciated.

  I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will more than likely consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. So my two questions are 1) C# Open Source Social Network SDK 2) C# Open Source Social Netowrk APIs (facebook, linked in, etc) If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

• Modularizing web applications

  Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas?   Hey guys, I have a slight problem... we made a change to our url structure the other day and have broken links all over. What I did was change links from: http://blog.mydomain.com/articles/123 To: http://blog.mydomain.com/articles/this-is-a-smaple Is there anyway to direct any links linking to the pages ID number to the postname???? The old url structure is still being published throughout our RSS feed on facebook. So I am trying to catch those people that are or maybe clicking on our links on our facebook posts and redirect them to that posts postname url? Does that make sense? Thanks and help would do

• Getting HTTP 406 when trying to test facebooker application with cucumber

This happens in the cucumber test environment only and not in the browser(development/production).

• Auto update the content in ASP.NET

  I have to design a website where user can update their status, just like facebook and twitter and other social networking sites. Now my requirement is to refresh the feed with new user updates. Ex: when the new status comes facebook automatically add that on the top of the feed. on the other hand twitter shows the number of updates which is ready to be load. both ways are acceptable to me Now, I have to decide what is the best way to achieve this functionality. I am open to use ASP.NET. So I am confused that regular repeater control with timer and auto refresh or any other way? (I am wondering that if I set repeater for auto update and meanwhile if user is performing some action on any status it will lost). or do I need to change my framework from ASP.NET to ASP.NET MVC (I am little afraid with MVC as I have very less knowledge regarding it and I know it has a learning curve to master ajax/Jquery things) Any suggestion how I can I achieve it in a better and feasible way? EDIT1 I am not looking for a code but I want advice to achieve this. Supporting URL's would be appreciated. EDIT2 I am open to JQuery which can regularly check the database and fill the section. But my concern is this that if user is updating any comment and want to load/feed is automatically generated. his textbox text shouldn't be disappear (just like facebook, twitter or Linkedin) EDIT3 I have seen that on Stack overflow when any other user has modified the question/answer, I got notification like this question/answer is modified. and when I clicked on that notification only that section got reloaded. I am curious to know how to achieve this functionality. So that when user is commenting on a status/post and if meanwhile someone has updated the content then it would show the other user comment. Edit4 Could someone please recommend me an example of ASP.NET MVC 3+ which can do similar kind of activity (i.e. one input box and once user insert an text it will add the item in the list (with JQuery).

• Best Design pattern for social media file transfer

  Our system would like our clients to link their accounts with different social media sites like youtube, vimeo, facebook, myspace and so on. One of the benefits we would like to give to the user is to transfer, update and delete files they have uploaded to our sites and transfer them to the social media sites mentioned above. this files could be videos, images or audio. We started thinking about using a strategy pattern, as all of these sites share a common process ( authentication, connection, use the API to transfer/edit/delete the file ), but we soon realized that it may not work as me may want to use some of the extended functionality that is specific to each service (eg: associate a youtube video with a channel, or upload images to a specific album on facebook, and much, much more...) My question is, what would be the best Structural Design Patter to use for this scenario?

• Web scraping: how to get scraper implementation from text link?

  I'm building a java web media-scraping application for extracting content from a variety of popular websites: youtube, facebook, rapidshare, and so on. The application will include a search capability to find content urls, but should also allow the user to paste a url into the application if they already where the media is. Youtube Downloader already does this for a variety of video sites. When the program is supplied with a URL, it decides which kind of scraper to use to get the content; for example, a youtube watch link returns a YoutubeScraper, a Facebook fanpage link returns a FacebookScraper and so on. Should I use the factory pattern to do this? My idea is that the factory has one public method. It takes a String argument representing a link, and returns a suitable implementation of the Scraper interface. I guess the Factory would hold a list of Scraper implementations, and would match the link against each Scraper until it finds a suitable one. If there is no suitable one, it throws an Exception instead.

  Hello, I am planning to implement a basic recommendation system that uses Facebook Connect or similar social networking site API's to connect a users profile, based on tags do an analyze and by using the results, generate item recommendations on my e-commerce site(works similar to Amazon). I do believe I need to divide parts into such: Fetching social networking data via API's.(Indeed user allows this) Analyze these data and generate tokes. By using information tokens, do item recommendations on my e-commerce site. Ie: I am a fan of "The Strokes" band on my Facebook account, system analyze this and recommending me "The Strokes Live" CD. For any part(fetching data, doing recommendation based on tags...), what algorithm and method would you recommend/ is used ? Thanks

• Error loading Variables stage.loaderInfo - AS3

  I have a Document class that loads variables from Facebook with the use of stage.loaderInfo var connect:FacebookConnectObject = new FacebookConnectObject( facebook, API_KEY, this.stage.loaderInfo ); But when I change the Document class (with another one responsible for the layout of my app), and try call the above from a movieclip that exists in my application with the use: var facebook_class:FacebookAp = new FaceBppkApp addChild(facebook_class) I get error TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. I believe the error comes fro this line this.stage.loaderInfo since I changed the scope... How I am supposed to fix that?

• Showing the ProgressDialog while opening the Website

  I have to open a website say Facebook page, twitter page and You Tube page in order to share my post there. Now when I click to the item Facebook , it gets redirected to FB to share and same for Twitter and YouTube. I have to show them in my WebView and all this is done perfectly. What I want is to show the Progress Dialog after clicking on the Item till it gets redirected to the FB , Twitter or YouTube. I don know how to show the Progress Bar for redirecting to the Main Website. Can anyone Please help me put Here. Thanks, David Brown

• How do you authenticate user generated "apps" for your app?

  I'm think something like Facebook apps here. User generated pieces of code that people can write to interact with my app. I understand how an authenticated API works, but this seems a little more complicated because not only does the APP have to authenticate itself (with a regular api-key) but the USER using the app has to be authenticated somehow too, without giving the app free reign. I've been reading a bit here to see how FB does it: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/How_Facebook_Authenticates_Your_Application And it looks like you have to pass a signature in addition to the api-key along with every call, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how this gets generated and used on the other end (my server). Figure there must be a simple explanation of this out there? Thanks! P.S. I'm building a Rails app if there are any applicable gems/plugins.
