• Precising definition of programming paradigm

  Wikipedia defines programming paradigm thus: a fundamental style of computer programming which is echoed in the descriptive text of the paradigms tag on this site. I find this a disappointing definition. Anyone who knows the words programming and paradigm could do about that well without knowing anything else about it. There are many styles of computer programming at many level of abstraction; within any given programming paradigm, multiple styles are possible. For example, Bob Martin says in Clean Code (13), Consider this book a description of the Object Mentor School of Clean Code. The techniques and teachings within are the way that we practice our art. We are willing to claim that if you follow these teachings, you will enjoy the benefits that we have enjoyed, and you will learn to write code that is clean and professional. But don't make the mistake of thinking that we are somehow "right" in any absolute sense. Thus Bob Martin is not claiming to have the correct style of Object-Oriented programming, even though he, if anyone, might have some claim to doing so. But even within his school of programming, we might have different styles of formatting the code (K&R, etc). There are many styles of programming at many levels. Sp how can we define programming paradigm rigorously, to distinguish it from other categories of programming styles? Fundamental is somewhat helpful, but not specific. How can we define the phrase in a way that will communicate more than the separate meanings of each of the two words—in other words, how can we define it in a way that will provide additional meaning for someone who speaks English but isn't familiar with a variety of paradigms?

• Question about separating game core engine from game graphics engine...

  Suppose I have a SquareObject class, which implements IDrawable, an interface which contains the method void Draw(). I want to separate drawing logic itself from the game core engine. My main idea is to create a static class which is responsible to dispatch actions to the graphic engine. public static class DrawDispatcher<T> { private static Action<T> DrawAction = new Action<T>((ObjectToDraw)=>{}); public static void SetDrawAction(Action<T> action) { DrawAction = action; } public static void Dispatch(this T Obj) { DrawAction(Obj); } } public static class Extensions { public static void DispatchDraw<T>(this object Obj) { DrawDispatcher<T>.DispatchDraw((T)Obj); } } Then, on the core side: public class SquareObject: GameObject, IDrawable { #region Interface public void Draw() { this.DispatchDraw<SquareObject>(); } #endregion } And on the graphics side: public static class SquareRender{ //stuff here public static void Initialize(){ DrawDispatcher<SquareObject>.SetDrawAction((Square)=>{//my square rendering logic}); } } Do this "pattern" follow best practices? And a plus, I could easily change the render scheme of each object by changing the DispatchDraw parameter, as in: public class SuperSquareObject: GameObject, IDrawable { #region Interface public void Draw() { this.DispatchDraw<SquareObject>(); } #endregion } public class RedSquareObject: GameObject, IDrawable { #region Interface public void Draw() { this.DispatchDraw<RedSquareObject>(); } #endregion } RedSquareObject would have its own render method, but SuperSquareObject would render as a normal SquareObject I'm just asking because i do not want to reinvent the wheel, and there may be a design pattern similar (and better) to this that I may be not acknowledged of. • Automate #include refactoring in C++ [on hold]

  I have a big project with hundreds of files. And as it often happens to C++ projects, #include directives are in messed up. I want to refactor them to increase clarity, decrease compilation time and simplify analysis. For each .h file I want to make sure that: It have #include directives only for types it is using But it have only forward declarations of types that are used as T* or T& For each .cpp file I want to make sure that: It have #include directives only for types it is using and not already included by another headers (no indirect includes when possible) I'm looking for a tool which will help me to automate this refactoring. For now I only know of tools that helps to remove redundant includes, they are many: PC-lint include-what-you-use cppclean ProFactor IncludeManager But I know of no tools to help me to move necessary includes in .h files or replace includes with forward declarations. Any ideas? Tools for Windows and Visual Studio are preferred. Update. Considered to be off-topic. • Problem with Ogre::Camera lookAt function when target is directly below.

  I am trying to make a class which controls a camera. It's pretty basic right now, it looks like this: class HoveringCameraController { public: void init(Ogre::Camera & camera, AnimatedBody & target, Ogre::Real height); void update(Ogre::Real time_delta); private: Ogre::Camera * camera_; AnimatedBody * target_; Ogre::Real height_; }; HoveringCameraController.cpp void HoveringCameraController::init(Ogre::Camera & camera, AnimatedBody & target, Ogre::Real height) { camera_ = &camera; target_ = &target; height_ = height; update(0.0); } void HoveringCameraController::update(Ogre::Real time_delta) { auto position = target_->getPosition(); position.y += height_; camera_->setPosition(position); camera_->lookAt(target_->getPosition()); } AnimatedBody is just a class that encapsulates an entity, it's animations and a scene node. The getPosition function is simply forwarded to it's scene node. What I want(for now) is for the camera to simply follow the AnimatedBody overhead at the distance given(the height parameter), and look down at it. It follows the object around, but it doesn't look straight down, it's tilted quite a bit in the positive Z direction. Does anybody have any idea why it would do that? If I change this line: position.y += height_; to this: position.x += height_; or this: position.z += height_; it does exactly what I would expect. It follows the object from the side or front, and looks directly at it.

• Adding sub-entities to existing entities. Should it be done in the Entity and Component classes?

  I'm in a situation where a player can be given the control of small parts of an entity (i.e. Left missile battery). Therefore I started implementing sub entities as follow. Entities are Objects with 3 arrays: pointers to components pointers to sub entities communication subscribers (temporary implementation) Now when an entity is built it has a few components as you might expect and also I can attach sub entities which are handled with some dedicated code in the Entity and Component classes. I noticed sub entities are sharing data in 3 parts: position: the sub entities are using the parent's position and their own as an offset. scrips: sub entities are draining ammo and energy from the parent. physics: sub entities add weight to the parent I made this to quickly go forward, but as I'm slowly fixing current implementations I wonder if this wasn't a mistake. Is my current implementation something commonly done? Will this implementation put me in a corner? I thought it might be a better thing to create some sort of SubEntityComponent where sub entities are attached and handled. But before changing anything I wanted to seek the community's wisdom.

Error: HR_51118_HRPROC_ERR_ON_ASG ASGNO 1115 APP-PAY-51118: Error was encountered when processing assignment 1115 HR_51119_HRPROC_ERR_OCC_ON_ET ETNAME: Garnishment 3 APP-PAY-51119: Error was encountered when processing Element Type Garnishment 3 HR_6881_HRPROC_ORA_ERR SQLERRMC ORA-01403: No data found SQL_NO 520 TABLE_NAME pay_input_values_f APP-PAY-06881:Error ORA-01403: no data found has occured in table pay_input_values_f at location 520 This issue was logged in Bug 14679161 - QUICK PAY ERROR AFTER RUP (2012) AND WAGE ATTACHMENT UPGRADE APP-PAY-06881. The following one off patches have been released to My Oracle Support to resolve this issue*: 11i -  Patch 14679161 12.0 - Patch 14849394:R12.PAY.A 12.1 - Patch 14849394:R12.PAY.B * IMPORTANT:  Depending on when/if customers have run the Wage Attachment upgrade process will determine the appropriate action to take. • Configuring WS-Security with PeopleSoft Web Services

  I was speaking with a customer a few days ago about PeopleSoft Web Services.  The customer created a web service but when they went to deploy it, they had so many problems configuring ws-security, they pulled the service.  They spent several days trying to get it working but never got it working so they've put it on hold until they have time to work through the issues. Having gone through the process of configuring ws-security myself, I understand the complexity.  There is no magic 'easy' button to push.  If you are not familiar with all the moving parts like policies, certificates, public and private keys, credential stores, and so on, it can be a daunting task.  PeopleBooks documentation is good but does not offer a step-by-step example to follow.  Fear not, for those that want more help, there is a place to go. PeopleSoft released a Mobile Inventory Management application over a year ago.  It is a mobile app built with Oracle Fusion Application Development Framework (ADF) that accesses PeopleSoft content through standard web services.  Part of the installation of this app is configuring ws-security for the web services used in the application.  Appendix A of the PeopleSoft FSCM91 Mobile Inventory Management Installation Guide is called Configuring WS-Security for Mobile Inventory Management.  It is a step-by-step guide to configure ws-security between a server running Oracle Web Server Management (OWSM) and PeopleSoft Integration Broker.  Your environment might be different, but the steps will be similar, and on the PeopleSoft side, Integration Broker will remain a constant. You can find the installation guide on Oracle Suport.  Sign in to https://support.us.oracle.com and search for document 1290972.1.  Read through Appendix A for more details about how to set up ws-security with PeopleSoft web services.

Following up on yesterday's post about Oracle VM VirtualBox being selected as the best virtualization solution for 2012 by the readers of Linux Journal, our Friday tip is about that very cool piece of software: Question: How do I move a VM from one machine to another with Oracle VM VirtualBox? Answer by Andy Hall, Product Management Director, Oracle Desktop Virtualization: There are a number of ways to do this, with pros and cons for each. The most reliable approach is to Export and Import virtual machines: From the VirtualBox manager, simply use the File…Export appliance menu and follow the wizard's lead. Move the resulting file(s) to the destination machine; and Import the VM into VirtualBox. This method will take longer and use more disk space than other methods because the configuration files and virtual hard drives are converted into an industry standard format (.ova or .ovf). But an advantage of this approach is that the creator of the virtual appliance can add a license which the importer will see and click-to-accept at import time. This is especially useful for ISVs looking to deliver pre-built, configured and tested appliances to their customers and prospects. Thanks Andy! • Strange spam posts not making sense

  I'm running a web site with a forum where one small part is open for posting from unregistered users. The site uses captcha, but still some spam posts get through every day. Here is the thing. All of the messages follow the same pattern, but all also come from different IP's. That makes me thing this is some sort of automated scripted "attack" from a botnet of some sorts. The strange thing is that all the messages start with six random characters and contains a couple of links. The words have no meaning and the domains in the links does not even exist. Why would anyone use time and resources spreading these things? Below you can see two of these messages: A5Zfs6 exrzvrbspntz, [url=http://nktqoqllnuab.com/]nktqoqllnuab[/url], [link=http://wtrenldadvsy.com/]wtrenldadvsy[/link], [http://rnlrqfgdvdot.com/] O2oLpL nqeffxhryfdk, [url=http://jutyurbpfxow.com/]jutyurbpfxow[/url], [link=http://jpcdtmdalpow.com/]jpcdtmdalpow[/link], [http://qopqwqxwjdjx.com/] Since all the messages come from different IP's I can't see blocking those will help much. For now I'm considering just dropping all messages following this pattern since it's quite easy to match with a regexp. Have anyone else seen these kinds of messages or know the point of posting them?

• How to Install Windows Media Player 11 on Wine

  I am battling to install Windows Media Player 11 on Wine. I have tried the following: Open a Terminal (Applications, Accessories, Terminal) and type "sudo apt-get install wine." This installs Wine Windows Emulator, a free application that allows you to run many Windows programs within Linux. Download Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP (link in Resources) and save it to Ubuntu's desktop. Once downloaded, right-click and select "Open with Wine Windows Emulator." Follow the on-screen prompts for installing it to your system. Go to "Applications" then "Wine," select "Programs" and open "Windows Media Player." Click "File" then "Open" and locate a DRM file you want to play. Select "OK" to load it into Media Player. I installed Wine (Which is step 1). But I am having problems with step 2 (Download Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP (link in Resources) and save it to Ubuntu's desktop). I'm just not finding a way to do it. I may be overlooking the (link in Resources) Can't find it. I am stuck!

• Java ME SDK 3.0.5 Integrated with NetBeans 7.1.1

  NetBeans 7.1.1 now integrates Java ME SDK 3.0.5, so you do not have to download them separately. Java ME SDK was packaged in NetBeans Mobility Pack, a mobile application development toolkit for NetBeans. Therefore, Java ME SDK is no longer a separate menu on NetBeans. For those who have not downloaded Java ME SDK yet, please simply visit NetBeans website and download the latest version. For those who already have Java ME SDK integrated with NetBeans 7.1 or earlier, and want to update NetBeans IDE to 7.1.1, don't worry. They can co-exist. To use NetBeans plug-ins such as Device Selector, profiler, and Internationalization Resource Manager, you have to install "Java ME SDK Tools" from NetBeans. Here is how. 1.  Go to "Tools - Plug-ins" from NetBeans menu. You can find all the plug-ins you can install into NetBeans. Locate "Java ME SDK Tools" from the list. 2. Follow the instruction to install Java ME SDK Plug-ins. 3. Once completed, you will see new menu options. For example, you can find Device Selector under Tools - Java ME. (If you used old version of Java ME, you will notice that there is not 'Java ME' menu any more. This is because all the sub-menus were integrated into appropriate places in NetBeans.) There is one thing to keep in mind; Since NetBeans 7.1.1 already includes Java ME SDK 3.0.5 and Java ME SDK 3.0.5 plug-ins must be installed through NetBeans plug-in menu, you should not download Java ME SDK 3.0.5 separately and try to integrate it with NetBeans. This may cause issues.

• When do domain concepts become application constructs?

  I recently posted a question regarding recovering a DDD architecture that became an anemic domain model into a multitier architecture and this question is a follow-on of sorts. My question is when do domain concepts become application constructs. My application is a local client C# 4/WPF with the following architecture: Presentation Layer Views ViewModels Business Layer ??? Domain Layer Classes that take the POCOs with primitive types and create domain concepts (e.g. image, layer, etc) Sanity checks values (e.g. image width 0) Interfaces for DTOs Interface for a repository that abstracts the filesystem Data Access Layer Classes that parse the proprietary binary files into POCOs with primitive types by explicit knowledge of the file format Implementation of domain DTOs Implementation of domain repository class Local Filesystem Proprietary binary files When does the MyImageType domain class with Int32 width, height, and Int32[] pixels become a System.Windows.Media.ImageDrawing? If I put it in the domain layer, it seems like implemenation details are being leaked (what if I didn't want to use WPF?). If I put it in the presentation layer, it seems like it's doing too much. If I create a business layer, it seems like it would be doing too little since there are few "rules" given the CRUD nature of the application. I think all of my reading has lead to analysis paralysis, so I thought fresh eyes might lend some perspective.

About a year ago, I switched to a very simple process of managing email and have found the ultimate in organization. On the craziest of days with 250+ emails, I keep my inbox empty. Here is how I do it; First, start with the following folders in your mailbox; Inbox    Archive    FollowUp    Hold Of course, all inbound emails will start in the Inbox. As you work throughout the day, follow these steps to keep your inbox empty; Read the email. Are you responsible for any action? If you are and can do it immediately, then do it. As I review the folder, I am constantly reminded that there is something I am waiting on – and can send a simple reminder by forwarding the original email. I sometimes send myself a “todo” email and park it in the FollowUp folder I like to know how many emails are in the folders so I set the “Show total number of items” property on the folder to show the amount of emails.

• Can't start webcam for google video services

  I've got Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit and have installed the google video chat plugin. However webcam doesn't seem to work (black screen -- no video at all). For cheese it works but shows really bad (black and white kinda) image. Following some link I installed guvcview if I start it then image looks neat. Any suggestions on how can it be fixed? If it helps I've tried the solution: $ sudo mv /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old $ sudo gedit /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin and putting following lines in: #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old OR #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old Cause I've both files. Finally $sudo chmod +x /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old I closed and reopened chrome then started gmail tried video call -- black screen :-/ Ok so today finally google+ provided me with trouble shoot link and advised me: The plug-in won't install If you're having trouble installing the plug-in, or are receiving a message asking you to reinstall it, you should check to make sure your configuration is right. To do so simply: Check to make sure the Google Talk Plugin Video Accelerator and Google Talk NPAPI Plugin are enabled. If you're using Chrome you can type about:plugins in your browser to display your plug-ins. Make sure you're not using Internet Explorer 64-bit (this is a browser version that is 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit). Ensure that you don't have any "click to run" extensions enabled. If you're still experiencing this issue after checking your configuration you can follow these steps: Refresh the browser page. Close any running Google Talk plug-in processes. Close all open and running browser processes. Restart your computer. Uninstall and then reinstall the plug-in. Try a different browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. I looked in about:plugins for chrome and firefox: I don't have Google Talk NPAPI Plugin, does that matter? and I thought its installed with google talk plugin or no?

  The one and only thing prohibiting wide adoption of PinkMatter's amazing Flamingo ribbon bar integration for NetBeans Platform applications (watch the YouTube movie here and follow the tutorial here) is... the amount of real estate taken up by the height of the taskpane: I was Skyping with Bruce Schubert about this and he suggested that a first step might me to remove the application menu. OK, once that had been done there was still a lot of height: But then I configured a bit further and now have this, which is pretty squishy but at least shows there are possibilities: How to get to the above point? Get the PinkMatter Flamingo ribbon bar from java.net (http://java.net/projects/nbribbonbar), which is now the official place where it is found, and then look in the "Flaming Integration" module. There you'll find com.pinkmatter.modules.flamingo.LayerRibbonComponentProvider. Do the following: Comment out "addAppMenu(ribbon);" in "createRibbon()". That's the end of the application menu. • I am trying to set up a ubuntu sever 12.04 on my machine

  I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). However here what i try to do I kinda fellow his tutorial http://www.ubuntugeek.com/step-by-step-ubuntu-11-04-natty-lamp-server-setup.html but however the command where not 100% like him not in same order but same idea. Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it. • Should I use the cool, new and awesome stuff [closed]

  I'm in the field of Web Development. I follow a lot of awesome people on Twitter(Paul Irish, Alex Sexton, David Walsh, Rebecca Murphey, etc.) By following these people I'm constantly updated of the new and cool stuff in web development(backbone.js, angular.js, require.js, ember.js, jasmine, etc.) Now I'm creating a web application for a client and because of the different tools, libraries, plugins that I'm aware of I don't even know anymore when do I need to use those or do I even need those, or how do I even implement it in a sane way where I won't have to repeat myself(DRY). What's your advice on what I really need to do in order to become better. Do I really need to use these cool new tools or should I just stick with what I know for now and try to make my code better. Should I unfollow these people in order to not pollute my mind with stuff that I can't really use now because I don't have the necessary experience in order to use it. What sort of things should I really be focusing on for someone like me who has only about 2 years of experience in the field of web development.

• Language redirect affecting pagerank and search listing?

  Preface We have a number of sites that use the same redirect mechanism across the board. We recently transitioned one site from non-localised to localised and detected that the Google+ integration doesn't show up on the search results any more AND the PageRank is gone from 2 to 0. How the redirect works If the UA sends a cookie (e.g. lang=en), redirect the user to /language (e.g. /en) If the UA is a bot (.*bot.*), redirect to /en If the Accept-Language header contains a usable, non-English language, redirect to /language (English is the default on many browsers in non-English regions) If there is a valid GeoIP lookup and the detected region is linked to a supported language, redirect to /language Redirect to /en We do of course on all pages have the proper markup to indicate the alternate language: <link hreflang="de" href="/de" rel="alternate" /> As far as we can tell, we follow all publicly available guidelines from Google, so we are a bit at odds if this is a bug in Google or we have done something wrong. Question Does not having content on the root URL of a domain adversely affect search engine rankings and if yes, how does one implement a proper language redirection?

• Seeking solution for printing-reporting .NET

  I am developing an application that prints in separate threads in extreme cases about 20-25 pages per minute to various thermal printers. Currently templates for these are XAML xps documents. All printers have graphics drivers that support EMF/GDI printing. So GDI-EMF is done by operating system resulting in slower performance. Sending raw text for printing is another good solution but doesnt work always , because some clients have old chinese thermal printer that nobody support thus impossible to change codepage / emulation. So it doesnt work always. Also most computers running my software are low end ATOM CPU. So I am thinking to return to GDI, EMF printing and have both Text-Only reports and EMF reports. Another reason i want EMF is because here receipts are signed by Electronic Fiscal Memory device.Most of these dont do good job extracting text from XPS as they dont follow the standard but how windows convert GDI to XPS.Even with text-only mode some of them dont support all character encodings and are impossible to send paper cut command after the sign. I know that using a reporting engine would solve rendering problem but I dont want to buy one. All I want is to be able to show tabular data and insert an image and replaced text.I know there is StringTemplate that could do the generation of template but the problem is i should parse somehow the template and render it using GDI commands. Is there any other solution/approach for this ? Or is there anything ready ?

• How do I restore the original color scheme, icons, and theme?

  I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries: The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here. Not sure same problem. Similar 'gray and boxy' article here. Desktop forgets theme. I have also tried the unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.
