• What is a realistic average time difference between servers in the same LAN?

  Until recently, we had at work a small cluster of about 20 small Windows servers (which have now all been virtualized). They were all configured to synchronize with the local time server. It was on an 1Gb sub-network in our own DC. I never got them to be less than about 100ms away from each other, which I consider to be an incredibly big difference. Is that a normal value? What is a realistic expectation of time difference between machines running on a 1Gb network, and all connected to the same time server, and updating frequently, say every 5 minutes? I would like to know this as setting timeouts and other parameters in a distributed application requires to take that difference into consideration.

• Is there a good way to prevent a server from emailing a specific address (we control both servers/apps)?

  When testing a production app we occasionally need to pull from a live site and perform tests on a development server. There are quite a few email addresses stored in the database that we need to modify every time we restore to the development server. Occasionally someone on my team will miss one and accidentally send an email through the distribution list. The email looks legit because it is coming from a clone, it can cause quite the situation. We have a protocol we follow every time we clone the live app and it has helped a lot but I would feel better if it was impossible for the two servers to communicate. Is there a good way to do this? Can firewall rules block email? Does Plesk have a blacklist?

• Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do. • Network authentication + roaming home directory - which technology should I look into using?

  I'm looking into software which provides a user with a single identity across multiple computers. That is, a user should have the same permissions on each computer, and the user should have access to all of his or her files (roaming home directory) on each computer. There seem to be many solutions for this general idea, but I'm trying to determine the best one for me. Here are some details along with requirements: The network of machines are Amazon EC2 instances running Ubuntu. We access the machines with SSH. Some machines on this LAN may have different uses, but I am only discussing machines for a certain use (running a multi-tenancy platform). The system will not necessarily have a constant amount of machines. We may have to permanently or temporarily alter the amount of machines running. This is the the reason why I'm looking into centralized authentication/storage. The implementation of this effect should be a secure one. We're unsure if users will have direct shell access, but their software will potentially be running (under restricted Linux user names, of course) on our systems, which is as good as direct shell access. Let's assume that their software could potentially be malicious for the sake of security. I have heard of several technologies/combinations to achieve my goal, but I'm unsure of the ramifications of each. An older ServerFault post recommended NFS & NIS, though the combination has security problems according to this old article by Symantec. The article suggests moving to NIS+, but, as it is old, this Wikipedia article has cited statements suggesting a trending away from NIS+ by Sun. The recommended replacement is another thing I have heard of... LDAP. It looks like LDAP can be used to save user information in a centralized location on a network. NFS would still need to be used to cover the 'roaming home folder' requirement, but I see references of them being used together. Since the Symantec article pointed out security problems in both NIS and NFS, is there software to replace NFS, or should I heed that article's suggestions for locking it down? I'm tending toward LDAP because another fundamental piece of our architecture, RabbitMQ, has a authentication/authorization plugin for LDAP. RabbitMQ will be accessible in a restricted manner to users on the system, so I would like to tie the security systems together if possible. Kerberos is another secure authentication protocol that I have heard of. I learned a bit about it some years ago in a cryptography class but don't remember much about it. I have seen suggestions online that it can be combined with LDAP in several ways. Is this necessary? What are the security risks of LDAP without Kerberos? I also remember Kerberos being used in another piece of software developed by Carnegie Mellon University... Andrew File System, or AFS. OpenAFS is available for use, though its setup seems a bit complicated. At my university, AFS provides both requirements... I can log in to any machine, and my "AFS folder" is always available (at least when I acquire an AFS token). Along with suggestions for which path I should look into, does anybody have any guides which were particularly helpful? As the bold text pointed out, LDAP looks to be the best choice, but I'm particularly interested in the implementation details (Keberos? NFS?) with respect to security.

The shares (both built-in and created by me) are there, the security works, but when trying to access the data I get a "The network path was not found" message which is worrying, to say the least. I'd like to know if there is a way to get the data off the disks somehow, as some of the data in the drive (ie, pictures and videos of my 1.5 yrs old son) is hard if not impossible to find otherwise. • Is RAID 0 or JBOD better for home media server?

  I have an external two-bay drive enclosure (the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro) connected to a Mac Mini (my home media server) over FireWire 800. I'm streaming media to other computers in the house over wired gigabit. I have two 1.5 TB drives that I'm using independently right now. The media is on one, and I'm mirroring the files to the other drive at night as a backup. But as I approach filling up the drive I'm wanting to span those two drives together to give me a total of about 3 TB, and then buy another drive for backups. The external enclosure supports both RAID 0 and JBOD, but I'm not clear on which would be better in this situation. Would RAID 0 provide any performance improvements over JBOD for streaming video (possibly several streams at once? How does each affect the MTBF of the drives? In general, should I choose RAID 0, JBOD, or keep them independent?

• Home ZFS based NAS...What processor/chipset to use?

  So, I'm building a home/personal NAS. My plan is to expose both SMB fileshares for sharing files/media between hosts, but also to carve an iSCSI target LUN out of it for use by VMWare as a datastore. I want to use ZFS (software RAID) so that means I'll either be using FreeNAS, Solaris Express, or OpenIndiana. My question is basically: How much horsepower do I need? Obviously I/O is going to be my bottleneck but I want to be sure that I am not limiting my I/O because of a slow processor or chipset. So far the hardware plan is to use an Intel i3 and motherboard with one of the H87, Q87, or Z87 chipsets, a SAS controller (JBOD, no RAID) and if budget allows, I'm also hoping to get an SSD for the ZFS L2ARC and ZIL. Does anyone think I could get away with an Intel Atom or cheaper/less-capable processor/chipset than the i3 and [HQZ]87 listed above?

I've tried just about everything I can find such as uninstalling all firewalls/antivirus, doing the netsh rss,autotune, and chimney disable, and updating everything but it still continues to happen.   Here’s what I dream of: I install Windows 7 Home on my parents’ PC. They have a regular user account that they use, meaning they can’t install anything. I have an administrator account, meaning I can install things for them. I install some sort of VNC software on their machine that lets me access their computer remotely under the administrator account, so that I can install software for them (or do other administrator tasks, e.g. updates) without actually going to their house. Is there any VNC or VNC-like software that supports the above? (I guess I might be better off buying them Windows 7 Professional, and using Remote Desktop. At some point I’ll give up and get them an iPad, but for now, remote Windows admin is the dream.)

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. How closely can this be achieved?

  Does anyone here know if Active Directory will support the use of both Windows Folder Redirection and Mac OS X's Portable Home Directories for synchronizing a user's files to a remote share? I want to synchronize my user's files with a remote share as a way of backing up their data. This is fairly straightforward if a user has only a Windows computer or only a Mac computer. However, will Active Directory support a situation in which a user has both types of computers or they have a Mac on which they're running Windows within Parallels? If I configure a remote share via Group Policies for their Windows files and then configure a different share for their Mac files via ADUC, when they change a file on either computer, will AD know which computer the file was changed on and synchronize that file with the appropriate remote folder? What I need to do: Manage 3 repos: unstable, testing, stable Self-service functions that let users add/remove/promote packages (promote means moving a package unstable?testing or testing-stable). ACLs that control which users/groups may add/remove/promote packages. Automatically re-sign packages as they move repo to repo (since the GPG key for "stable" should be different than "unstable") Automatically run "createrepo" to update repodata when needed. Suggestions?

• Why is my iPhone WIFI so slow at home?

  When my iPhone is connected to my home wireless network, the internet is unusably slow. I installed the speedtest.net application; here are some results from tonight: Down: 0.0kB/s, Up: 0.0kB/s, ping: 2230ms Down: 2.5kB/s, Up: 40.5kB/s, ping: 2182ms Down: 0.0kB/s, Up: 20.0kB/s, ping: 197ms For comparison, here is the result from my iMac to the same server, which is on the same wireless network (and has no wired connection): Down: 139kB/s, Up: 53.8kB/s, ping: 182ms Neither my iMac nor the Dell laptop also on the network have experienced the wifi problems I get with my iPhone. On the other hand, I tried browsing a website on the wireless network at work with no problems. EDIT: SpeedTest at work gives me 156kB/s down. EDIT2: Girlfriend (owner of the Dell) reports actually the internet is sometimes very slow. Perhaps there is more going on. No problems with my iMac. My router is a ASUS WL-500g Premium V2 running OpenWrt Kamikaze with X-Wrt Extensions 8.09.

• How do I remote desktop to my work's Windows box from my Mac at home through VPN?

  I would like to remote desktop from my Macbook to my Work's laptop from home. I connect to the work's network via Cisco VPN. My Cisco VPN clients connects fine in Mac OS X but I am unable to remote desktop. I am also unable to ping my work laptop. The laptop is powered on and not sleeping. I can access it via LogMeIn. If I were to actually pug into our network at the building. I can remote desktop to my work laptop from my Macbook. If I use a Windows virtual machine and connect using the Windows Cisco VPN client, I am able to RDP and ping my work laptop. What is wrong with my OS X VPN connection?

• Why would the servers network type change from Private to Public?

  Just found a fault with a server, other users have had problems connecting to it. The setting on the network card had changed from Private (domain) network to Public (the other option being Home). The switch to the network interface would have caused the firewall to block a lot of normal functions. I am guessing that since the event log showed no reason for the change that it might be due to a complete shutdown we had recently where someone powered up the machines, however the domain controllers might not have been booted up first. Any confirmation that this might be the case?

• What is the cleanest way to upgrade Fedora and also my individual installs while keeping /home?

  I am a professional programmer, using Fedora 10 (and a host of other packages individually installed). I use my system to telecommute. Every year or so, I go through the ritual dance, usually with a second computer and a KVM switch as I don't have office space for two monitors, to build the next version of Fedora and install all my favorite apps. Is there a better way? At least a nice way to keep track of what I need to 'add on' so that I don't have to manually install my app collection? Also, I keep /home on a separate raid-ed drive set so I can also fall prey to 'old-config-file-itis'.

  Hello, I'm building a little network with 4 computer a plotter, 3 printers an a HP Fax/Scan/Copy/Print machine. The network is connected to the web by a D-Link router/firewall. I would like to add little server to have file sharing (reachable via VPN from outside by a single user-road-warrior), automatic backups. I would like to avoid big electrics bills or, to say It in a green way, I would like to avoid useless power consumption made by a big server with hot-plug, Raid, double PSU because I don't need all this stuff. The server must work 24/7 and the budget is between 400€ and 1000€. I'm evaluating the Asus EEE Box (with XP), a TranquilPC (with XP), a FitPC (again with XP), and an Asus TS Mini (with Windows Home Server). I like the latter but since I'm Europe I don't know where I can buy It. Do you have any suggestion/experience to share with me about: which hardware do I have to buy ? which O.S. ?
