• Debian: Firefox or Iceweasel default printer for POS station

  Context Using Debian 6.04 "Squeeze" as POS station. There are two printers installed: Network printer and a receipt printer It absolutely must be able to print by default to the receipt printer on a certain website though the system default is a network printer. In Debian ...it doesn't. Problem I've set up XP, 7, Ubuntu and even Mac OSX this way, so I'm no stranger to setting Firefox up this way ...same Iceweasel/Firefox settings ...complete fail. Always uses system default no matter what the settings, or, which printer you print from. To get this to work on other systems you do this: Print a page in Firefox using desired printer. Ensure print.save_settings is true. Firefox remembers last printer used Set print.always_print_silent = true The end. This works on every OS I've set up ....except Firefox and Iceweasel in Debian. My only recourse seems to be to set the receipt printer as default or go back to bloaty Ubuntu/Mint ...etc.

• Okular (on Ubuntu 9.10) prints multiple pages per sheet (n-up) very small

  I'm trying to print a set of beamer slides with multiple slides per page (4-up or 6-up). When I select 4 pages or 6 pages per sheet in the Okular print dialog, the pages print quite small (perhaps even tiny -- about 1.75" by 1.25") and leave significant white-space on the page. I can get around this behavior by using the pdfnup utility (in the pdfjam package); which will correctly generate a 4- or 6-up pdf file but it's annoying to generate a second pdf file when I should be able to accomplish this task from the print dialog. Details: Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), 64-bit, Color Postscript printer.

• unable to access Internet by wireless but can by cable

  i'M GOING MAD! UNtil last friday I had been successfully using wifi with the supplier as VIRGIN through their Motorola SB 4200 cable Modem and the wireless router being the Linksys WRT 54G router. Supported were three lap tops and an EPSON 510W printer and this had been running with no issue for about 3 years. Back to last friday, we started suffering significant delays and then the network collapsed with no wireless access. I was able to connect a single laptop direct to the cable modem and internet access was restored to just that one device. I thought that the problem was the router so I tried a backup D-Link device with no success. I have subsequently bought another cable modem AND a netgear router plus addidtional ethernet cables but with no success. The best that happens is that the signal appears good but I cannot get access to the internet. A yellow question mark appears on the 'gradient' icon. Each laptop and router works elsewhere so I'm stumped. Mind you I am a real novice so I'm not surprised. Please can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

  We have an application that uses Active Reports documents. You pass a document the UNC of the printer and away it goes. We have a group that runs this application within a Citrix session and the truly networked printers function perfectly but shared printers that work well outside of Citrix become unreachable. Printers do not need to be defined on the machine running the report for the system to work. There is something in the way Critrix passes the information to the destination UNC that I don’t understand.

• 2 Printers 1 Queue

  My issue: When an order is processed, the same document needs to be printed on two printers. My proposed solution: Create a single queue in CUPS with a backend script that spits the job out to the two real printers queues. My problem: Documentation. Maybe I'm looking at every ring around the bullseye, but I can't find anything that lays out the rules for writing a CUPS backend script. In the end, I have several questions: Is there already an option to do this in CUPS that I've missed? The line I use to add my queue is "lpadmin -p MultiPass -E -v multipass -P Generic PostScript Printer". But DeviceURI is bad unless I specify a directory like "-v multipass:/tmp". Why is this? For testing, my script does nothing but capture ARGV and write it out to a text file one line per argument. Problem is, I'm getting nothing. Logs show the job as successful, but I'm pretty sure my meager attempt at a backend isn't even being run. I've tried to keep this question brief, so please ask for more info as I'm sure I've left out the most important part in all this. Honestly, I'm just done chasing my own tail. • LPR on Windows: Can you specify # of copies?

  In Linux, you can use lpr -#5 foo.txt to get 5 copies of a document when sending to an LPD-based print server. The Windows (XP, 2003, 2008) version of LPR supplied by MS doesn't seem to have this option, though. Does anyone know if there's a hidden option to specify the number of copies? Thanks.

  I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

• How to use 2 or more internet connections on the same network?

  Living in a joint family we have 3 internet connections, each floor has one internet connection which is split per floor. Each internet connection is shared between 4-5 computers using a switch per floor. Each of these internet sharing networks are independent of each other. What I want to achieve here is a local network (for local messenger and file sharing) that can combine all the 3 independent networks, problem is that whenever I try to do that the whole network tends to use just one internet connection. I have all the necessary hardware. How do I solve this problem, one approach could be that I could get one PC to act as a server and bridge the internet connections and then the whole network would have to access the internet through this server. Theoretically this could be possible but I have never tried this approach in real life. Also if certain computers need be restricted from internet access how would this be possible on the same network?

  I'm looking for a solution that allows multiple persons to put plan and notify their vacation by putting it in their electronic calendar and invite a dedicated "robot" email. On the other side I should be able to get a quick overview of the vacation for each person and do a print out that allows me to put it on a board. Example: John puts his winter vacation for week 7 into his calendar and invite [email protected]. Ben does the same thing for week 4 and 5 and invites [email protected]. Dilbert host the [email protected] and prints out and overview for the next 3 months. Each person's vacation is either stated by name or/and color on the print out. I would like to do the thing with standard business software like Outlook 2010 without installing too many softwares. But at the same time it should be easy and quick to make the print outs without too much fiddling Am I dreaming ?

• How to set up daisy-chained routers for separate sub-nets?

  This question seems to be similar to others, but I'll take a shot anyway. A client recently switched ISPs from TDS to Comcast Business Class. Before the switch, they had 5 static IP addresses assigned. Now they'll have a single IP address that will change whenever Comcast decides to do so. The issue is that this internet connection will be shared among two companies, both having (and wanting to keep) their own private subnets. Because TDS was supplying multiple IP addresses to the one location, this allowed me to put each router on the switch. Now, with Comcast, they only get one IP address, meaning there has to be a main router before the subnet routers. Luckily, the cable modem has a built-in router, which I would like to connect to each company's router, and still have DHCP enabled on all accounts. Question: What do I need to do to the subnet routers to keep them separate from each other, but still allow internet access from the main router. I would love to say "I tried this", and give you links, but everything I find on the internet only mentions daisy-chaining routers with DCHP disabled.

• very slow internet with Linksys WRT54GL only in wireless mode (wired is OK)

  I bought a new Cisco Linksys WRT54GL router to connect my laptop (running Windows 7) to the internet. I installed Tomato 1.28 firmware on the router. When I connect the laptop to the router via ethernet cable, everything is fine and I get extremely fast up- and download speeds. When I connect wirelesssly however, websites load extremely slow - it takes dozens of seconds to load a website! <-- This is my question, how can I fix the wireless speed issue? Gmail for example is unusable this way. I tried speedtest.net, but this always fails in the upload part of the test so I can't even test the bandwidth (could the fact that it fails in the upload part, not the download part, be an indication what the problem is?!). I have isolated the problem a bit, I am convinced it has to do either with the router itself, the router settings, or the settings of the wireless connection in Win 7. Because previously, I was using another router by Buffalo and I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried to reproduce the settings from the Bufallo router as closely as possible on the Linksys router (same channel, same encryption etc). The download speed problem only occurs with the Linksys router, and only in wireless mode! When I exchange the Linksys router with the Buffalo router I have here for testing, the wireless speed is up to normal again. Also, before I had installed the Tomato firmware I had exactly the same problem, so it has nothing to do with the firmware itself. Notes & things I already tried: Changing the channel: does not seem to affect anything, I am also on the same channel (10) which I was previously on when I had a Buffalo router. QoS is off. Ping to the router itself is OK, ~ 1 ms. Some current settings of the linksys router: WAN / Internet Type: DHCP Wirelesss Mode: Access Point B/G Mode: Mixed Broadcast: check Channel: 10 - 2.457 GHz Security: WPA2 Personal Encryption: AES

• Print from Linux to Windows networked printer

  I want to print from a Debian (Lenny) workstation to a Windows networked printer. I'm not even sure what type of Windows network this is. Our tech-support is friendly but doesn't want to get involved with supporting Linux. I need to use it for a variety of reasons and am completely stumped because I know nothing about Windows networking. They gave me URI smb://msprint.ourorg.edu as the "address" of the printer and further confirmed that the domain is "OURORG" and the share is "PHYS-PRI". I've installed CUPS and made sure that it's running as a daemon, I've clicked on the system-config-printer[1] icon, selected the printer as a Windows printer shared via SAMBA and entered the above URI. Attempting to print a testpage just sees it sit in the queue. I attempted to see if I could access the share using two other methods. Method 1. First I tried the "smbclient" from the CLI: $ smbclient -L //msprint.ourorg.edu -U user23 timeout connecting to 192.168.44.3:445 timeout connecting to 192.168.44.3:139 Connection to msprint.ourorg.edu failed (Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) Method 2. I tried to use the GUI tool Smb4K. This shows me four other toplevel (I'm assuming they're domains?) groupings one of which is the one which our IT department supplied to me. Clicking them shows a bunch of other machines with (what I assume are NetBIOS names?) including my own. I see all sorts of other networked printers belonging to other departments but none within mine. Certainly not the PHYS-PRI one suggested to me by the IT folks. I realize that I'm probably using the wrong terminology for the windows network, but can anyone help me with this? What steps should I be taking in debugging this? Do I need to actually run my machine as a SAMBA server to authenticate to the printer or should I just be able to communicate using CUPS?   OS: Vista and Windows7 I have Microsoft Office Document Imaging installed. .tif and .tiff files association is set to " Microsoft Office Document Imaging" When I open a TIFF file, it opens in " Microsoft Office Document Imaging". Good so far. However, when I right-click on the TIFF file and invoke print, I see a "Print Pictures" dialog, ("How do you want to print your pictures?") I have some applications installed on my machine that print incoming TIFF files on the printer. They work fine on XP. However, on Vista and Windows7, I get this "Print pictures" prompt requiring an user intervention (i.e, click on Print button). How do I get rid of this "Print Pictures" prompt?

• Intel Ethernet Bottlenecking Internet?

  I'm having trouble with my internet speeds. So I just recent build a pc and everything is fine. I installed the Intel drivers and connected to the internet. It connects but I'm only half the speed I should be getting. My normal speed is 20mbps but speedtest.net is only showing 10. It can't be my ISP (which is TWC if anyone is asking) because my other devices like my laptop and my smartphone are showing 20 down. Heres my system: CPU: i5 4430 HSF: Stock cooler Mobo: Gigabyte Z87MX-D3H GPU: x2 MSI R7950-3GD5/OC BE RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB dual channel PSU: Silencer High Performance Power Supply 750 Watt 80+ (It's a subdivision of OCZ) HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 3TB SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 120 GB Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D Edit: I am using the stock adapter that is on the motherboard. I know for a fact that the cable is good because I used it on my laptop and it ran fine. Its a CAT5E cable. I also ran IPERF and its giving me the same results, 10 mbps.

  I am trying to configure the NICS on the Solaris Sparc server. My problem lies in getting out to the "Internet" from the local network. • Converting DOCX files to PDF via SSH without losing formatting

  I'm struggling to find a solution that will allow me to convert a DOCX file to a PDF without losing or malforming the formatting of the document on CentOS 5.7. I have tried CUPS-PDF but it doesn't work; spool files appear in the /var/spool folder but nothing happens after that. OpenOffice and LibreOffice converted a DOCX to PDF but the formatting was all wrong. However if I print the DOCX to a Windows PDF printer from my Windows 7 workstation, it outputs to PDF absolutely fine. So why can't Linux do the same? I tried to print via CUPS to the Windows PDF printer (shared) but the document appears in the queue as "Remote Downlevel Document" and doesn't print. This only happens when I print from Linux.

• How to delete system default printer forms?

  On Windows there are system default printer forms which can't be deleted from the Print Server Properties dialog. Is there some other way they can be removed? We are never going to use page sizes like Envelope, B5(JIS), US Std Fanfold, etc. and I'd like to save users (and myself!) from having to scroll through a big long list of noise. Our print servers are Windows Server 2003 if that makes any difference. thanks.

• Create a PDF that defaults to flip on short edge when printed double-sided

  We're creating a 2-page PDF brochure with a target audience who will print it on their regular office or home printers. If it is printed on a double-sided printer (common in offices), it'll come out correctly if set manually by the user to "Flip on short edge", but will come out with the second page upside down if default settings are used (flip on long edge). Our target audience aren't very tech-literate, and we've found that even within our own office network there is variation in the location of the 'Flip on short edge' setting - so it isn't realistic to give everyone who downloads the PDF instructions on how to change this setting or to expect everyone to find out how to change the setting off their own backs. So, when creating a PDF (ideally using Adobe InDesign or Acrobat, but if other software or hacking is needed that's fine...), is there a way to configure the PDF file itself so that when printed double-sided with default settings, it flips on the short edge? If possible, it'll be useful supplementary info to know how reliable any such methods are across different PDF readers (e.g. Adobe Reader, Acrobat, Mac Preview, inbuilt browser readers (e.g. chrome), FoxIt, etc). If questions about content creation like this aren't a great fit here, feel free to migrate it to the graphic design stackexchange site - this question seems to fall half way between the two sites

• Print over remote CUPS server, but just show a subset of the printers.

  I'd like to print from my Ubuntu laptop (karmic) to some networked printers. Our organisation uses a CUPS server with several hundred printers. What I know I can do is: CUPS_SERVER=printers.company.com acroread document.pdf and then Adobe Reader shows me all available printers to select from. However, it takes a couple of minutes to display the large list, which is really annoying. (The desktop PCs here suffer from this, too.) The other option is to add a new printer with an address like ipp://printers.company.com/printer/bldg1_hp8150 (to the Ubuntu printer configuration = local CUPS server). However, it asks me for a driver. I don't want to / can't always specify a driver, since some printers don't appear in the list. I'd like to let the remote CUPS server handle the driver part (like it does when i set CUPS_SERVER), and do no more preprocessing/"driver stuff" on my side. The ideal thing would be if I could somehow add the remote printer list to my local cups server, and apply a filter, so that it would just display printers a la bldg1_*. This feature was available in KDE3.?, but I can't find something similar in Ubuntu/Gnome. Any suggestions?

• Could I save printer's ink/toner by changing the font?

  I'm developing a Microsoft Word document that reached more than 200 pages and I want to print it using my Laserjet or my father's Inkjet printer. I can save paper using both sides of each sheet, however I can't save ink/toner using smaller fonts or un-bolding words (I already did it), so I started wondering about the fonts that I was using. For example, the most used fonts, Arial and Times New Roman have specific and relevant differences with regards to ink consumption: has uniform width across all the letters, and is more easily readable and "clean to see". has narrow width on center and an enlargement at the ends. Using Times New Roman will certainly save ink/toner but will also "pollute" the reader vision over time. So, there is some specific font (from more than 100 that I have on Windows) that could save ink and also keep a clean text?
